The Heavy (2009)
Amazed it was financed... didn't anybody read the script?
This is one of those movies you really hope will be good and with a reasonable cast, should have been, i was looking forward to watching it but with a newborn son, struggled to find the time.. when i did find the time it was wasted on one of the worst films i have seen for a while (and i have seen Dear John). I thought that maybe this was one of those movies that might have had a great original script that was then bastardized by rewrites and a different directorial view, but then noticed it was written and directed by the same guy Marcus Warren, so assume he must have been happy with it, Gary Stretch who was promising in Dead Man Shoes, never seemed to go anywhere with his character who seemed to have the morals of a saint one minute and Bill Sykes the next. I have enjoyed some of the Vinnie Jones movies i have seen but always felt that he was being carried by the other cast members.. in this, he does the carrying and did what he could with the terrible dialogue, i should have known as soon as i saw idiot boy Lee Ryan in this sorry excuse of a film, maybe he is a friend of Marcus Warren who must have great friends to get this dross made in the first place!
My Boy Jack (2007)
Made for TV movie thats better than most cinema
My Boy Jack is a made for TV movie starring Daniel Radcliffe as Rudyard Kipling's son Jack as a teenager preparing for "The Great war" (WW1). Shown on Remembrance Day, here in the uk on terrestial TV (ITV1), it is a timely reminder of what people of different classes and backgrounds went through and the very different attitudes compared to today (..and some similar ones). It is well written and acted with a good pace and shows the character's as well rounded. I have never seen any of the Harry Potter movies (not my type of thing) so it was nice to see Radcliffe in action and very good he was too. This movie is a lot better than a lot of films at the cinema and for awhile you can still catch it on ITV.COM for free (Don't know how long it will be there) Definitely worth a watch!
The Castle (1997)
A wonderful film on every level!
I saw a small clip on sky movies advertising "The Castle" showing the family eating dinner, so i sky plussed it (tivo to Americans) thinking this was a movie about poking fun at insular hick Australian's. I didn't watch it for a week or so but when i had a spare few hours, i thought i would give it a go... well, what a fantastic movie! Funny throughout even in poignant moments but done with honesty without interference to the scene. This is one of those rare comedy's that have great character's who you will care about, even with all their misgivings. It has been showing here in the U.K. on sky indie for awhile and i urge you to catch it while you can... A wonderful film on every level!
The Lake House (2006)
Almost so bad its good, but it's just bad
I cannot believe so many people have defended this absolute crap, anyone who thought this movie was any good is an idiot. I can suspend my belief for any movie.... to a point, but this film does not even follow it's own rules and doesn't make sense on any level and if you thought it did... i feel sorry for you (But i bet the Hollywood machine loves you!)The ending was signposted early on and even though it negates the whole film, it fits in with this complete mess. Watch it for yourself and laugh. Anyone who had anything to do with this movie should hang their heads in shame... it's not even so bad it's good it's just bad... very bad!
