Summer School (1987)
hilarious feel good film
This has to be the funniest film I have ever seen - no matter how many times I watch it I still laugh in all the same places. I love all the characters, but especially Freddy who has the right mix of cheese and charm and slobiness with a heart of gold and dashing good looks. And I love his dog too. He's soooo cute. Chainsaw and Dave are inspired, especially the scene where they turn the classroom into a horror scene, and their faces when the exchange student doesn't quite remove her bikini top. The only criticism I have is that at the beginning of summer the class is about twice the size, but mysteriously shinks until the exam at the end, and oh yes, it should have been twice as long. I really hope it gets released on DVD at some point.
Legally Blonde (2001)
wonderful, a really fun cheering-up movie
This is my favourite film in the whole world, and I don't care if that makes me a really sad person, cos I love it. It really is "super-fun". Reese Witherspoon is perfect in the movie. She is a real life Barbie doll and so are all her friends. So dumb you just gotta love them all. I love how everything is pink. Her clothes and all her stuff are just wonderful. I wish I could live in this film. OK so it's not deep and meaningful or anything, but sometimes you just want a film to cheer you up when you're down or bored, and this is the perfect choice. It has a great story line that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. It's predictable in a good way and it has a perfect happy ending. I can really enjoy watching it every time (and believe me, it's been many many times).
The Princess Bride (1987)
a fantastic action adventure romantic comedy
The first time I saw this was on video, and as soon as it finished i had to watch it over again, and again the next night, and again the night after that. In fact I've had to buy so many copies because I carelessly keep losing them. The entire cast is fantastic, and Cary Elwes is the most charming, suave hero with the most perfect English accent. I was pretty gutted when I found out he was actually American I can tell you, but it's all credit to his acting ability. He's brilliant in all his films in fact. The Princess Bride is very very funny and has the best sword fighting scene in any movie in the world ever ever ever. It has a great script and a great story line, which I think is enhanced by it being so unlikely, that just adds to the fairytale, and it's very beautiful too. Everybody should see this film.
Evil Dead II (1987)
One of the most imaginative films ever
I first came accross this film in a documentary on TV, and was desperate to see it. When I finally did I was definitely not disappointed and I have seen it many times since. It never gets boring because it is so eccentric, and I never fail to love watching it. It is both gruesome and hilarious, although it does get pretty painful at times. The special effects are fantastic, and the zombies are so evil and so entertaining, which is unlike most zombie films where they are, frankly, pretty boring. The bit where all the furniture and ornaments start laughing at Ash is probably my favourite bit, because it is so surreal. Bruce Campbell is just wonderful. He has a slightly cartoonish appearance which fits in with the whole feel of the film so perfectly. I believe no film fan should miss this film, whether they normally like horror or not.
Van Helsing (2004)
I've seen worse, but it was pretty bad
This was not the worst film I have ever seen, but I don't think I could sit through it a second time. It was asthetically pleasing most of the way through, the sets and costumes were all very beautiful, as were most of the cast, and of course the special effects were pretty good, but that's about all I can say that was good. It was badly written and badly directed. There was a loose plot but it seemed to have been written with the plan of linking together a bunch of pretty sets and some classic monsters. However, the monsters would have been better left un-linked because it made a mockery of all 3 of them. It was completely implausible throughout and I was completely disappointed. Bring back Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee - Hammer rule.
Secret Window (2004)
Must see for Johnny Depp fans
Being a huge Johnny Depp fan, I saw Secret Window on the day it came out and I am definately going to go back and see it a couple more times. This is a must for any fan of the sexiest man alive. He is on screen virtually all the time and is, as always, brilliant. He once again delivers a witty and humourous performance in the portrayal of his tormented character. I was glued to the screen throughout and I really enjoyed the film, which was both well acted by all parties, and well directed, and despite the fact that I had been led to expect the twist at the end by all the less than rave reviews that I have read, I still didn't expect the ending to be done the way that it was. I was very pleasantly surprised
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)
Most entertaining film ever made
OK, so everything that I could say has all been said in the other reviews already, but I can't stress just how enjoyable this film is. It's a wild ride that keeps you laughing and thrilled from beginning to end. Johnny Depp is incredibly funny and incredibly sexy, and since potc I have become a JD addict, which is costing me a fortune on Ebay. The special effects are perfect - the pirates are very funny and not overdone at all. It is fun for all the family, and I can't think of anybody who isn't a complete kill joy, who wouldn't enjoy this film. It's always worth a watch when you need cheering up. I have seen it around 9 or 10 times and there will be more. Can't wait for the sequel, and praying that they can secure Johnny for part 3 too.
But I'm a Cheerleader (1999)
Brilliant, funny, unique
I just loved this film. I saw it about 4 or 5 times in the end. This was, however, partly because of how pink the film is. It's my favourite colour, and the whole film is so neat and clean. The set reminds me a bit of Edward Scissorhands, although it's obviously not as good a film. It's hilarious though. The campness of some of the gay boys had me in stitches, even after the first couple of viewings, and especially the repressed behaviour and longing glances of the son and the male warden. It is an ironic film but it does say a lot about society's view of homosexuality, not that I'm saying it's a particularly deep film because it's definately a comedy, and a very good one at that. I totally recommend it to anybody, boy, girl, straight or gay
