Steins;Gate (2011)
Masterpiece
Masterpiece is an overused term; however, it doesn't apply to this series. The feel of this series is incredible! Other highly rated anime affect a person on a surface level however this anime is extremely deep in its undertones.
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part IV (2022)
Can't understand low reviews!
First of all, you will never recapture Lightning in a bottle. These shows have at least kept my attention. With the last three films in the theater, I walked out of two and didn't even see the last one. Compared to the last trilogy this has way better writing. Is it perfect? No!
The Walking Dead: Internment (2013)
Best episode ever
Scott Wilson did the best job ever. If there was ever someone to aspire to it would be his character in this episode. I so regret not meeting him at comic con.
The look on Ricks face noticing his son is growing into a man! Best writing ever!!!
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: Truth (2021)
Can't watch a show without getting a political lesson
We get this stuff on the news, online, social media, beginning of sporting events, and video games! I would love to just watch a TV show and have fun and give us a break from the craziness of this world.
The X Files: The Field Where I Died (1996)
Incredible episode
This is one of the best episodes they have ever done! Made me think seriously about reincarnation. Very nostalgic to think about!
The X Files: The Calusari (1995)
Scary as Hell
Very similar to the Exorcist. FREAKY!! Don't watch if you dislike possession films!
The Twilight Zone: King Nine Will Not Return (1960)
Horrible
Worst acting ever! I'm not gonna waste words on this episode!
The Good Doctor: I Love You (2020)
I cried a barrel of tears!!
I have read the other reviews about how this episode is a game changer for the show, and it definitely is; however, wow wow wow! The writers didn't just want you to just cry they wanted to pull your heart out and chuck it out a window and say, "You won't be needing this!!"
This is a bold statement, but I would venture to say this is one of the finest hours of television I have seen in many years. The writers will have their hands full next season to deal with the problems created with this episode; however, just sit back with some tissues and....oh wait.....there are no tissues....stupid virus!! Just use an ol' rag and cry till your heart explodes!!
Star Trek: Picard: Et in Arcadia Ego, Part 2 (2020)
Writers are from the ADHD society of America
I was devastated at the end with Picard and Data. I have never cried that much over a show; however, you can also have sporadic great scenes and overall crappy storyline. Where are the great writers of Star Trek?! Are they dead?! These writers suck so bad it makes me pissed! I so looked forward to this show and was thoroughly disappointed.
You can have the best restaurant with the shine and the glitter and still have a crappy chef! This show's chef sucked ass!!!
The Karate Kid (2010)
Don't pay attention to the average rating score of this film!
In the 80's when "The Karate Kid" came out, I completely loved that film. Being a teenager at the time, I "totally" connected with that movie. However, after seeing the new one, it also stole my heart. Again, the average score on IMDb for this film doesn't represent the heart, depth, and visual images of this film.
I'm a guy, and guys don't cry right? NOT! This film had me choking up in three different parts. Without giving away too much of the film, there is a scene when Dre (Jaden Smith) makes an empassioned plea to his girlfriend's father to remain friends. The lines are heartbreaking. I was trying to read them to my daughter and couldn't get through it all. When I got back into the car with my kids, I asked, "Ok, who cried in the movie?" expecting them to admit to the tenderness of the film. Surprisingly, they both pointed at me! Kids, they'll sell you out in a second! LOL! The cinematography of the film is outstanding. There are shots that take your breath away. The size of mountains that are shown give you a realistic scope of how big they really are. Some shots give the illusion of you floating, and you really wonder if the camera is hovering in mid-air.
My only quibble with the film is Jaden Smith's maturity as an actor. I understand that he is twelve, but compared to other young actors, he has a lot of improvements to make. Some of his line deliveries are wooden. There are scenes where he paces back and forth like an inexperienced actor would do who is full of nervous energy. However, I felt that most of his acting was genuine and heartfelt. Lastly, my daughter wouldn't admit this, only being seven, but I think that Jaden Smith is her first crush on a boy. He's gonna be a heart breaker!
Paranormal Activity (2007)
Does the movie live up to the hype? HELL YES!!
Do yourself a favor. Before seeing this film, go to the theater without knowing anything. Don't read anything or look at spoilers. Just let it be u, the movie, and the dark. Mooooo ha ha!! Ohh sorry! I saw this movie last night with a friend of mine, and to say that it freaked me out is an understatement.
The one lesson that I have learned from watching suspenseful films is our imaginations are more scary to us than being fed scary scenes from a film and told what to think. I will not presume to talk about any scene n this film for it would "spoil" the experience.
Hitchcock said that suspense is a bomb under a table that never explodes. Well n this film there is a bomb that doesn't explode, then does explode, and then does a dance. It is a film that will keep u on the edge of ur seat the entire time. It is rare that u see a film that lives up to the hype, but this $15,000 film delivers and delivers big!! I know that most of what I have said has sounded generic; however, I don't want to say too much because more information other than the trailer could ruin the experience. I will leave this last thought. Something happened at the end of the film that has never happened to me before. When the movie ended, no one moved. People were stuck n their seats and no one was leaving. To me, it seemed as though they were frozen with fear for an entire minute. When a film has that much power, u need to do yourself a favor and see it.
Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas (1977)
Jim Henson taught us to see the beauty in life!
In all of his work, Jim Henson seemed to always concentrate on the quality of the story, and not the frills and thrills that so many movie goers are now addicted to. To me, Jim was a hippie in many ways, and I mean that with the sincerest praise. He seemed to grow up in a time when imagination was blooming and people were breaking the bonds of tradition. In his short life, he allowed himself to explore his imagination as far as he could take it. It is a shame he left us so early.
In this short film, he uses the simple premise of a mother and son's love. It is feelings that most of us can identify with. Emmett and his mother are poor and the things they work for are sometimes only used as a means of getting something else they need to work with. This film touches how those who have been stripped of most of their possessions still find it in themselves to laugh, love, and care for others around them.
I recently bought this for my daughter and was so familiar with the lines that even after 20+ years ago, I could tell what was cut out from the DVD version. There is a simple scene in this film that makes your heart ache, and as I watched it, I was feeling like I was 12 again, having tears in my eyes and a big lump in my throat. Emmett and his mom are thinking about how they are going to get a Christmas present for each other, and both are thinking about the only two truly valuable things left in the home: a washtub and a tool chest. Each are willing to sacrifice these things to get the other a present. It is such a powerful scene, even in a children's movie, you will see the heart of the film shining through.
Jim Henson's spirit lives on and as long as there are great storytellers in the world, his vision for humanity will be seen by those lucky enough to find it.
300 (2006)
"300" is the Definition of Testosterone!!!
Over a year ago, I saw the clip for "300" and showed the actors working out and getting in shape for their roles. I was so pumped about this film (being a history minor and all). It really delivered wonderful fighting scenes and the only thing that was wanting was the script. It was a little weak at times, but still had some good lines. The best part of the film is the transition from normal speed fighting to slow motion. It makes the film. Everyone should know that this is a hugely violent film. It is likely the most violent I have ever seen.
This is a testosterone filled movie. The first half hour is describing how the Spartans came to be and then the last 3/4's of the film is nothing but pure fighting with small breaks in between. Don't be surprised if you walk out of the movie sweating!!!! Exciting and Fun!!
Rocky Balboa (2006)
Stallone goes back to his writing roots
Around ten years ago I remember that Gene Siskel was reviewing a bad movie that Stallone had written (prolly Over the Top), and he made the camera guy focus in on him and he said something to the effect of, "Stallone, I don't know why you choose to write such crap. You have shown that you are a good writer because of the first Rocky. Please don't make us suffer through these kinds of movies any more." It took a long time but he did it. This film is not about the fight or about the training scenes. It's about heart and depth of characters. At sixty years old (which is now considered the new "Middle Age"), you see that he is writing about what he is going through, and what others his age must be facing. Did I do enough in life? Did I accomplish all that I wanted? How will history/family look upon me after my passing? These are questions we all must eventually face, and I hope we all take his powerful words to heart, "Time goes by for everybody. Especially if you're standing still."
After leaving the film, I was so inspired by his example that it made me truly look at my life and I wondered if others got the same out of it.
I think if myself and others are looking at how to enrich our lives from this point on Stallone did his job with his script.
United 93 (2006)
One of the most moving films I have ever seen!
After walking out of the film (excuse me), I walked into the men's bathroom, and there were two men standing against the wall crying. As one of the men looked up at me, tears streaming down his face, I knew what he was going through, and he just shook his head saying, "Wheeew, man that was rough." Never have I seen a film affect people to this degree. Other than seeing "The Passion of Christ," I never saw an audience leave in complete silence. Usually someone speaks, but you could have heard a pin drop.
Paul Greengrass, the director, shows you something true (or as close to true as facts allow). Most films that are fiction and have great stories move us emotionally, but those films that are true and have something we remember involving a devastating event effect us to the core. I think most of us can remember where we were when we first heard the news of 09/11/2001. My mom remembers running down the street at 24 years old telling everyone that Kennedy had been shot. I remember watching the space shuttle explode in the 80's (skipped out of school that day
ha ha), but nothing compared to watching the live television coverage of the World Trade Center disaster.
Greengrass, being English, doesn't just concentrate on the plight of the passengers, but allows the audience to see it from the terrorist's eyes as well.
Spoiler: There is a scene where the primary terrorist is sitting next to a prominent executive in a designer suit and leather shoes. You see him continuing to stare at the shoes as if to be thinking my compatriots and people are dying and starving and this greedy American continues to consume products at will without regard to survival.
As you watch this film, keep in mind that the film is just as long as the actual flight of United 93. Given the circumstances, what would you do? What amount of terror would you be feeling? The passengers had only a short time to react to all the things that were happening, yet they found the time to call their loved ones and tell them bye. Greengrass' film is emotionally draining and powerful. Greengrass takes you on the ride with the passengers and doesn't let you go. I did find myself having an urge to leave the theater because I wanted to get off the plane. Then I reminded myself, "They couldn't get off, so I won't leave them." This film will be the one remembered in years to come as the pivotal film about 09/11.
From Hell (2001)
This movie is the definition of the Hughes brother's style!
After watching this movie for the first time, I thought it was really good, but throughout that next week, images and the look of the film stayed with me. The Hughes Brother's depiction of 19th century England is as I have always imagined; the peasantry and the upper class being so separated, the look of the buildings, people, cobblestone roads, fog, and lastly the Legend of Jack the Ripper. Also, keep an eye out for the Hughes brother's use of the camera.
This is my favorite Johnny Depp role; he is an addict, genius, poet, and is constantly haunted by the visions he receives. Johnny Depp has amazing versatility as an actor. His English accent was very surprising.
I hope any history buff or person that is interested in the Jack the Ripper case watches this film. It is truly wonderful to see.
Hawk the Slayer (1980)
Great B movie
As you watch this film, you will more than likely sit back and say, "This is so silly." Remember this is an 80's film. I remember first watching this film as a teenager and saying it was so cool. Well many moons later, I can see the aweful special effects, and the obvious mistakes made. The interesting things about "B" movies is that if actors know they are in one; it comes through in their acting. With this film, they try to act as seriously as possible, which makes it more believable. For people with a poor budget, they did quite well. The score is still some of the coolest music ever. It sets the tone for the film, and encompasses Hawk's mysterious nature.
As a regular film, it is aweful. As a "B" film, it does quite well. Cult classic.
