Tamara Drewe (2010)
Amusing and entertaining
This is pure escapism and the whole cast clearly enjoyed themselves immensely... OK so it's full of stereotypes, says nothing remotely profound about the human condition and the plot is distinctly predictable, but I was left with a smile on my face and a happy feeling at the end when it all turned out OK.
Gemma Arterton is always worth a watch and its good to see Tamsin Greig getting a decent part as the downtrodden and long suffering wife.
To be honest the excellent ensemble cast never put a foot wrong and the uncredited English countryside with its contradiction of beauty and rural dullness makes a fine back-drop.
I never read the Posy Simmonds originals so I care not a jot whether it is true to the serial or not.... this is a fine and entertaining way to spend an evening.
The two schoolgirls are terrific and really steal the show....
Shame about the dog though......
The King's Speech (2010)
A near perfect cinema experience
Totally immersive and compelling cinema.....
Who needs 3D glasses and CGI when you can watch this ??? I was transported instantly into the bizarre world of royalty in the 1930's and spent two hours in the company of characters who were wonderfully drawn and realised. There is not an ounce of flabbiness or a single wasted line in the script.... acting, even down to the corgis, is without fault and the cinematography is superbly atmospheric.
This is a tragic, funny, heart-warming story, told without the usual Hollywood saccharin and great attention to detail. British Cinema at it's very, very best.
Firth, Rush and Pearce are superb, and Bonham-Carter deserves at the very least an Oscar nomination..... rarely has so much been depicted by the twitch of a lip or raised eyebrow.
If there was any justice it would grab a fistful of Oscars.
Robin Hood (2010)
gladiator it ain't....
well..... I suppose it passed the time.... particularly as it was the directors cut and even longer.
even excluding the factual historical and geographical innaccuracies (which paying a child $10 could have sorted out on wikipedia) the plot is a complete mess.
a low budget made for TV could do better than this....
shame as the first 1/3 was promising before degenerating into stereotypes and outright nonsense.
everywhere you see similarities to gladiator but it is a a poor and very pale imitation of what was a very well crafted and plotted film...
not ridleys finest moment....
