Thir13en Ghosts (2001)
I'll make this short and sweet
With the machineries of `Cube' & `Event Horizon' plus the make-up to which any Clive Barker film pales to; and all the mystery of a good Robert Bloch novel
despite all these similarities, this was a very scary, entertaining film. It scared my two kids!
The Immortals (1995)
Death Throes And Slot Machines
Enter Eric Roberts (American Strays, Purgatory, The Grave) a manager of a mobster owned (Curtis) high-rise hotel and eloquent casino. He arranges eight individuals, all unknown to each other to rob the other four casinos that also belonging to Curtis. Pairing them off, he sends them out with similar masks at the precise time of casino collections. Thus begins ninety minutes bloody shoot outs, humor and an interesting plot that catches the viewer off guard at the end. Chris Rock and Tia Carrere make an interesting team. Forsythe is superb as he lies shot and bleeding profusely and decides, `This is as good as time as any to take that last hit of acid I was saving.' As the plot thickens, they all realize they have more in common than just being robbers. To say anymore would give it away as that movie dude did with `The Crying Game.' And we don't want that, do we? On a scale of One to Five, I would give it three and half stars purely on the fact I think Roberts and Forsythe are great actors. But as the critic I'm not (laugh Barb) I'd probably give it four.
Floating Away (1998)
Bitter Sweet & True
Alcoholism is a lonely road and misery loves company. It's nice when conventional loved one and friends have a scrape goat to put their troubles on.but leaving a baby on a car seat on the back of a car? No.
It was very hard for me to watch this movie through tear soaked eyes. The best line.'Alcohol has no point.' So true. I think movies like this, including.'My Name Is Bill W.' & `Clean And Sober' Give a positive approach to a disease that we, as a nation, are plagued with. Paul Hogan was fantastic.as were all the actors dealing with such a difficult subject.. ****
Love Is a Gun (1994)
Dream x Nightmare= Reality
I like Eric Roberts, even though he plays a moron forensic photographer in this movie. But maybe this is what the scrip called for. The dream sequences and imagery gave one the feeling that this was something David Lynch would write as a teenager but maybe I'm studying too much into it. Truthfully, I rather liked the movie. I found myself laughing right along with `Jack' as he watched his own scenario from the night before; unfold on a TV soap opera, verbatim.at a house of a murder site with the body lying before him. I also wondered where the dream ended and the nightmare began or vise-a-versa and how conveniently reality could be woven into the two. I personally would recommend the movie as I would any Eric Roberts movie. (Even `The Shadow People and `The Immortals.') Ironically when the movie was over, I sat back and exclaimed.what a ****** up movie!'
