Predestination (2014)
An Enjoyable travel to the past
Interesting and captivating with a new twist to the classic formula. Great cinematography and excellent acting contribute to this refreshing Sci-Fi/Time Travel film.
Rising actress Sarah Snook with a stellar performance is backed by solid performances of both Hawke and Taylor.
Such movies usually suffer from failed attempts at originality and complexity boarding on confusion. This movie avoids both by not trying to surprise and shock the viewer but rather act more as a mystery novel - unfolding with precision, letting the viewers participate in the events and discoveries to come. Much like a good old Agatha Christie book would successfully do.
The Spierig brothers keep getting better with each movie and this is a great step forward in what seems to be a promising career.
There is nothing new under the Time Travel sun but the delivery is excellent which makes this movie worth watching - at least twice, as any good Time Travel movie requires.
My Best Friend's Girl (2008)
cute, funny and romantic
no novelty, no surprises, but a very cute and funny movie.
this movie is not annoying and stupid as some say, its the old romantic plot, with fresh jokes and a bit of spunk.
Dane Cook is doing a surprisingly good job as the seemingly idiotic macho man yet in real life a sensitive guy. Kate is just Kate as you've seen her before. and Biggs just can't cut it as the loser, geeky best friend anymore... sorry Biggs, you're way too cute to be the second man again, its time for first. and of course some great Alec Baldwin moments.
if you are up for a romantic yet funny flick, go see...
Wanted (2008)
mediocre, over-done, already seen action movie
flashy action scenes and special effects did not compensate for the ludicrous plot, unreliable characters and feeling that i've already seen parts of it before. Bottom line-this movie is just over doing it!
for me it felt like the movie borrowed something from too many movies: The Matrix, Night Watch(cold, harsh, brutal bloodiness), Equilibrium and many more...
the only amusing event happened after I compared this movie to Night Watch, only to find that it was directed by the same director-Timur Bekmambetov. I'm sorry to say that this time he failed to deliver.
plus side: excellent music
Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008)
will not forget Forgetting Sarah Marshall so soon...
To tell the truth, I went to this movie with doubts. Some comments read this movie as not funny. But it is after all an Apatow production. What's more, I really like Jason Segel from "How I met Your Mother" and was curious as to his abilities as a writer. And with Paul Rudd, Russell Brand, Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and others, this movie seemed to be potentially perfect.
I was not let down, actually I was surprised! This movie IS really good! It's funny in the right ways, its charming to the right point, and its simply pure fun!
I believe what I like in the formula of this line of comedies is the lack of pretentiousness, focusing on our hero who is an antithesis to a hero and using extraordinary events around a really ordinary person. The jokes are not mainly "hit on the head" jokes. I found more depth and intelligence to a lot of them.
In the end what really convinced me was that in our cinema hall people from all ages laughed together, whether they were in their 20th, 30th or even 60th.
I believe this movie is for everyone in the mood for 2 hours of cinema love and fun.
2 Days in Paris (2007)
bla bla, whats the msg again? I forgot...
Went to see the movie after reading some reviews. Thought it would be a romantic flick... WRONG! Well it started kinda good, you could see the movie is basically about the dynamics of the couple. I think that when my mom started to doze off I realized that "too much" is going to be the problem of this movie.
The conversations were endless, sometimes giving me headaches. The subjects discussed were sometimes so POINTLESS that they weren't even funny. Too many words, on too many minor subjects, with too many character mannerisms.
This movie is not stupid or totally pointless, it actually discusses some important subjects related to relationships with depth and intelligence. But sadly it gets a little lost in all the blunder that is the plot of the movie.
In the end, the problems of Marion's character aren't really resolved or even dealt with. It's like saying: this is life, this is me, I'm way too old, accept me cause you wouldn't really find anyone better than me.
Hell, thats a depressing thought...
