good writing
25 October 2000
I am a sci-fi and horror buff, and this one was not bad. A good combo of the two, and a good story line. The cast was interesting as well, the only one I knew was Iggy Pop, what a trip. Anyway this movie is worth seeing if you like horror/sci-fi.

Fitzcarraldo (1982)
10/10
This is a truly amazing film. One of my favorites.
3 December 1999
I have always enjoyed foreign films, despite having to read the subtitles. This movie was no exception, and interestingly enough we are given no subtitles at all for the native Javiros language, and so we are kept in the perspective of the protagonist, (i.e., ignorant of what they are saying). Dialogue and action aside, this movie is full of beautiful images, sceneries, music, and even jungle sounds. The overall theme of the movie to me was the idea that everyday life was just a delusion connected to the realm of dreams. The protagonist is clearly a dreamer. It is also about 'struggle'. One man's determined struggle to make a dream into reality. It reminds me of a famous quote by Winston Churchill, "Success is never final. Failure is never fatal. It's courage that counts."

Urban Legend (1998)
6/10
Classic story in the low budget horror genre.
29 September 1999
Urban Legend is about all those stories that are meant to scare, but no one knows how they originated, or if they even ever happened. I liked this flick, but it did leave a little to be desired. I scored it a 6 out of 10. Good stories, and yes, similar to Scream in the acting. Nice appearance of Robert > Englund though, I have to say that he is the reason I rented the video.

The Matrix (1999)
cool!
28 April 1999
This movie has a good story (very imaginative sci-fi), great special effects, and no shortage of fast paced excitement. If you like action/science-fiction then Matrix will not let you down. If you're not too keen on sci-fi then you might give this one a miss. I predict it will be nominated for an Academy Award for Special Effects (and it could win, but will be up against Star Wars Episode I). I vote it an 8 (really a 7+), but I'm a fan of the genre.

Cube (1997)

overall good flick

Yeah I too was a little upset with what I thought were a few plot inconsistencies. Overall, however, I did like this movie. I watched it a second time with my friend who was equally captivated and intrigued. It was an interesting portrayal of human nature in the face of adversity, and how it manifests itself in different people.

Phantoms (1998)

"Chaos in the flesh..."
29 March 1999
This is a good action/suspense/horror film. It is highlighted by solid performances by Peter O'Toole and the rest of the cast and a well written story/screenplay by Dean Koontz. These highlights are nicely complemented by what I thought was excellent 'spooky' direction, eerie cinematography, and really scary music, sound effects, and special effects. It reminded me of a few of my favorite horror movies. I give Phantoms an A- (8). Check it out

Live Flesh (1997)

If you like Almodóvar, you'll probably like this one.
29 March 1999
Almodóvar seems to be following the rule-"Stick to one thing and do it well." As usual he was able to create great characters and involve good symbolism based on a story which is full of ridiculously impossible coincidences and the sometimes predictable, but always irrational behavior of the characters.

As in some of his other films, the story involves characters who seem to be completely led by fate and always bound to their destinies. Each of the characters goes through a radical transformation in a relatively short period of time. In the end, noone is innocent and all are victims, but there is a romantic hope for a brighter future and a new start at life.

I liked the new set of actors and actresses that were cast, and I would hope to see them cast differently in another film

Take this one or leave it.
29 March 1999
I should've left it. I felt that Campfire Tales was a pitiful attempt to string together a few disconnected horror plots. I liked the first story about the couple in the RV, but the rest of it didn't even capture my attention let alone scare me. And come on! 'the hook'? Take this one or leave it, I gave it a standard 5
