Back in 1967, The Beatles told us, “All You Need Is Love.” Back in 2004, writer Hiroshi Sakurazaka brought the world a novel called All You Need Is Kill, which served as the basis for the 2014 Tom Cruise sci-fi adventure Edge of Tomorrow… and I could understand why the title was changed for the movie, as All You Need Is Kill never sounded quite right to me. A better version would be All You Need Is Death – and that’s the title the makers of an upcoming folk horror movie have decided to use for their film, which is set to receive a VOD and limited theatrical release on April 11th. With that release date just a couple weeks away, a trailer for All You Need Is Death has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.

The month of April for Hulu is jam-packed with TV and film goodies, from Adam Sandler’s 1999 comedy “Big Daddy” to Fox’s hit sitcom “New Girl.”
On top of Hulu’s rollout of a new interface, it’s also adding some major film and TV titles to its platform. Some of the highlights that set off the first day of April include “American Psycho,” “Shrek” and its sequel “Shrek 2,” plus the Tim Story-directed “Think Like a Man.”
Anime series will be all the rage on Hulu with the dubbed version of the new popular series “Chainsaw Man” arriving, along with “Spy x Family” and “Black Clover.” If you’re looking for something a little bit more kid-friendly, the family can al enjoy “Despicable Me” and “Despicable 2,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days” and “Nanny McPhee.” For the lovers and heartless romantics, “Dear John” and “Date Night...

Hulu’s list of new releases for April 2023 don’t feature many blockbusters, but if we dig a little, I’m sure we can find some gems.
Perhaps the most promising items are on the TV side of things. Tiny Beautiful Things premieres on April 7 and stars Kathryn Hahn as “a floundering writer who becomes a revered advice columnist while her own life is falling apart.” That will be followed by comedy Am I Being Unreasonable? on April 11 and two documentaries: high school football story Algiers, America (April 19) and Tupac Shakur piece Dear Mama (April 22).
The best TV candidate this month, however, is probably Saint X on April 26. This series, told via multiple timelines, “explores and upends the girl-gone-missing genre as it explores how a young woman’s mysterious death during an idyllic Caribbean vacation creates a traumatic ripple effect that eventually pulls her surviving sister into a dangerous pursuit of the truth.

Even if you’ve signed up for every streaming service out there, it can feel monumental when a title moves from one to another. In April, Netflix mainstay “New Girl” moves to Hulu; still streaming, but not where fans are used to finding it — like rearranging the furniture in your apartment and waking up surprised every day that the couch is over there now.
But what’s important is that “New Girl” lives on, now joining Hulu’s own TV and movie library and originals from Freeform, FX, National Geographic, and more. Later in the month, Leila Gerstein’s “Saint X” — based on the novel by Alexis Schaitkin — premieres with three episodes, recounting the story of a young girl found dead during a family vacation and the sister piecing it together years later. Alycia Debnam-Carey, Josh Bonzie, West Duchovny, Jayden Elijah, Bre Francis, Kenlee Anaya Townsend, Betsy Brandt, and Michael Park star.

Mrs. Harris Goes To Paris, a kind Cinderella story for older women with a Dior twist, arrives in 978 theaters this weekend with strong reviews and great word of mouth. The film is a known property among that demo given its prime trailer treatment before Focus Features’ fan favorite Downtown Abbey: A New Era — not a bad setup.
Deadline review here. The film by Anthony Fabian with Lesley Manville, Isabelle Huppert and Jason Isaacs has a 92/critics, 94/audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. It shares the pond with a handful of strong studio holdovers and new wide releases Paw Patrol: The Movie and drama Where The Crawdads Sing. Like Crawdads, Mrs. Harris is based on a popular book – the 1958 novel by Paul Gallico – and book clubs are prominent in a large marketing push.
Manville plays Ada Harris, a British housekeeper and widow who dreams of buying her own couture Christian Dior gown.

Set in the Scottish highlands — at the site where women, men and children accused of witchcraft were burned at the stake 300 years ago — director Charlotte Colbert’s “She Will” reflects on this this historic massacre and enables her characters to reveal the truth of their own narratives.
Described as a gothic fairy tale, the feminist horror film follows an aging movie star named Veronica (Alice Krige) and her young nurse, Desi (Kota Eberhardt), as the two voyage to a healing retreat in rural Scotland after Veronica undergoes a double mastectomy. The surgery, paired with the legacy of violence remembered through the retreat’s omnipresent ash, forces Veronica to confront her past traumas as she builds a strong bond with Desi.

The latest is “about preservation,” icy Veronica explains in the film’s opening moments: A recent double mastectomy is the latest twist that has robbed her of yet another piece of her identity. As Colbert’s mystical first feature unfolds, Veronica is surprised by the new identities she can tap into, even if they prove less shocking to the film’s audience.
Intent on healing somewhere without prying eyes, Veronica alights for a solitary retreat in the middle of Scotland with only a young nurse in tow. Desi (Kota Eberhardt) isn’t at all impressed by her employer’s pedigree; she just wants to ensure her new charge takes care of herself, a much bigger ask than she could have possibly anticipated.

While initially thought to be vanity, Veronica Ghent’s (Alice Krige) cold cruelty towards her nurse Desi (Kota Eberhardt) and stubborn defiance about her recovery from a double mastectomy is ultimately revealed as survival. She’s an aging film star who’s worked, since 13, during an era ruled by egomaniacal and abusive men. She’s endured what it means to be a successful woman in the public eye, so she’s ready for when the tabloids write about her surgery and looks while questioning her star viability. Thus, recovery isn’t just about the physical side. It’s very much psychological too. Veronica will deal with the pain of prosthetic breasts despite Desi’s warnings to combat the media scrutiny. She’ll also book a remote Scottish retreat to try eluding the circus of celebrity.

At the age of 81, it’s been quite a year for the Italian maestro of blood, Dario Argento. At the top of 2022, the director premiered his first new feature in a decade, Dark Glasses (our review here), then this spring, Gaspar Noé’s Vortex, which he led, debuted in U.S. theaters.
Now, he’ll be arriving in New York City this weekend for a massive new retrospective at Film at Lincoln Center, featuring 17 brand-new restorations and the North American premiere of his latest film. Then, next month, the psychological horror feature She Will, which he executive produced, will arrive in theaters.

"I'm having dark thoughts." IFC Midnight has revealed an official trailer for an indie horror from the UK titled She Will, arriving in US theaters starting this July in the middle of the summer. This premiered at the 2021 Locarno Film Festival, and also played at the Overlook, Sitges, and London Film Festivals last year. The film explores the story of Veronica Ghent, who after a double mastectomy, goes to a healing retreat in rural Scotland with her young nurse Desi. She discovers that the process of such surgery opens up questions about her very existence, leading her to start to question and confront past traumas. The two develop an unlikely bond as mysterious forces give Veronica the power to enact revenge within her dreams. Described as: "An inventive and provocative directorial debut, with #MeToo resonance, She Will is a timely feminist critique, identifying Charlotte Colbert as one of horror's most exciting new filmmaking voices.

Exclusive: The UK’s National Film and Television School and local production company Popcorn Group have teamed up to launch a new writers prize for “stories with strong identities which look to shape the conversation around social and political issues in a thought-provoking way”.
The inaugural Nfts Popcorn Award has been won by Nfts Screenwriting Ma student Lily Seriki for her “Bridgerton-esque” TV pilot black-comedy Silly Girl, about gender, race and societal expectations in Regency England.
The pilot follows two teenage girls who are meant to be mastering the performance of simpering femininity. But Cecily is an autistic gynecologist with no tolerance for pretense, and Olive is a mixed-race woman with explosive Adhd. Up against a world that seeks to ‘cure’ their minds by controlling their bodies, the best friends learn to love their pathologized identities and fight for a life that’s free, independent, and defiantly insane.

Out of the many interesting titles at Fantastic Fest 2021, She Will is absolutely a standout film. For me at least. It’s beautiful and haunting and affecting in subtle and meaningful ways, and it left me feeling both powerful and at peace. It’s one of those films that sneaks up and gets you in unexpected ways. The beautiful imagery and powerful story are brought to life by a fantastic cast, and everything comes together in a way that is just breathtaking.

Wounds, both physical and psychological, become scars with time. But whether those scars are to be hidden or worn as badges of honor — evidence less of past trauma than of subsequent strength and healing — becomes the surprisingly resonant dilemma at the heart of Charlotte Colbert’s witty, weird horror-drama debut, which scooped the First Feature award in Locarno. “She Will” may not be particularly terrifying, except perhaps to abusers, rapists and anyone who’s ever used the phrase “it was a different time” to excuse the sins of their past without reckoning with them, but as a superbly crafted, thematically rich fable, it administers a potent dose of #MeToo vengeance, all while wearing its nasty sense of humor like a red-lipstick grin applied to a perfectly masklike face.

Given that, after its shuttered 2020 edition, the 74th Locarno Film Festival’s ident features a prowling, growling, resurgent leopard and the distinctly tumescent tagline “Cinema is Back” it’s somewhat ironic that the festival’s top prize should go to a film about erectile dysfunction.
In other ways, however, Indonesian director Edwin’s fabulously if nonsensically titled “Vengeance is Mine, All Others Pay Cash” is perhaps the ideal Golden Leopard winner, in what is a strange year for the world, and a strange year for the Swiss festival, which is finding its footing under the new artistic direction of Giona A. Nazzaro.
As an admixture of several distinctly populist genres that still, as Variety critic Jay Weissberg noted, uses impotence as a metaphor “to make a broader critique of a toxic culture that puts so much emphasis on virility,” the film is among the best exemplars of Nazzaro’s avowed...

She Wants Revenge: Colbert Commingles Traumas for a Witchy Saga
Director Charlotte Colbert delivers a moody character portrait mired in the mysteriousness of folk horror with debut She Will, centered on the formidably magnetic Alice Krige. A sinister, isolated retreat in the Scottish Highlands sets the tone, but Colbert winds through this tale of vengeance and retribution with unexpected beats, melding body horror, and historical psychogenesis. Subtly drawing upon a yonic allegiance with the past and present, it’s a strange allegory on the power of female alliance to combat the entrenched and unyielding heteropatriarchy. Although the material gains for the central women of Colbert’s story are negligible, it’s a moody tale of spiritual fulfillment funneled through the earthy, age-old powers of witchery.…...

Charlotte Colbert has often explored physical and psychological trauma in her artwork.
It’s perhaps little surprise, then, that her feature debut “She Will” centers Veronica (Alice Krige), a former child star who has just had a double mastectomy and who is repressing mental wounds under a caustic British exterior.
Described as a psychological horror title, the film sees Veronica and her nurse Desi (Kota Eberhardt) head to a rural Scottish retreat in search of healing. Once there, Veronica starts having strange dreams in which she’s able to seek revenge against those who have wronged her.
Colbert shot the film outside Glasgow in a location which she says “had all sorts of mysticism,” and which provided the perfect, mist-carpeted backdrop for some witch-y goings on.
“Kota and one of our gaffers both saw a ghost. Even among the crew and the actors there were these visions, this cult-like aspect,...

With Academy Award-winning “Roma” and “Gravity” director Alfonso Cuarón already a fan, Charlotte Colbert’s feature debut “She Will” will no doubt similarly impress audiences when it premieres at the Locarno Film Festival this week.
A psychological horror, the film stars Alice Krige (“Star Trek: First Contact”) as Veronica, a double mastectomy patient seeking respite at a rural Scottish healing retreat who soon finds herself able to mete out revenge via her dreams.
“’She Will’ sits in the tradition of great psychological horror films,” Cuarón said of the work. “The images, symbolism and layers within the story slowly convey a metaphysical ecstasy which leaves one questioning long after the film is finished. Charlotte Colbert has crafted a powerful debut.”
Krige is joined on-screen by Kota Eberhardt (“X-Men: Dark Phoenix”), Malcolm McDowell (“Bombshell”) and Rupert Everett (“My Best Friend’s Wedding”).
