- Trivia"Clouds and Rain" is a Chinese euphemism for sex. "The Bringer of Clouds and Rain" is a lady of the night, a prostitute. Clouds are thought to be the blending of the male and female, the sky and the earth, and the rain, the climax of the union. It comes from an old Chinese creation story in which heaven or sky, the Great Father, and earth, the Great Mother, are thought of as a conjugal couple engaged in sexual congress which is never ending.
- Quotes
Vasco Rodrigues: Ahoy, Ingés!
[chuckles]
Vasco Rodrigues: Still alive I see!
John Blackthorne: How's your leg?
Vasco Rodrigues: Fine. How's your mother?
John Blackthorne: Dead!
Vasco Rodrigues: Aww...
- Crazy creditsThe opening credit sequence is a modified version of a zen garden. This style of garden is often referred to as karesansui, which means "not using water."The two main elements of a Zen or karesansui (pronounced "kah-ray-sahn-soo-ee") garden are rocks to represent mountains (or islands) and sand to represent water. The sand used in Zen gardens is not beach sand; it is actually crushed or decomposed granite, small pebbles, or fine gravel. The particles of crushed granite are angular rather than round, so they can be more easily raked into patterns. Moreover, ripples in the sand or gravel represent flowing water or ripples in the ocean.

more action, deepening plot
I remember enough of the 80s version of Shogun to recognize a lot of the events happening, but they're so much sharper and more engaging in this version.
The visuals are vastly better. This feels like an immersive trip to feudal Japan, putting you right in the middle of the action, with arrows whizzing past your ears and the salty smell of the sea in your nostrils.
Blackthorne is more believable here than the Chamberlain version, who was far too gentlemanly. Somebody in Blackthorne's profession, an adventurer with few qualms about piracy and mayhem, would have been more like the crude but basically heroic guy depicted here.
Lady Mariko is a stronger presence as well but the real star is Toranaga. Love this series!
