Famed Argentine director Daniel Burman’s new feature “Transmitzvah,” his first in nearly eight years, will receive a Cinéma de la Plage world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Burman first broke out internationally with a double Berlin Silver Bear win in 2004 for his fourth feature, “Lost Embrace,” and became one of Latin America’s most exportable box office draws in the following years. However, founding Oficina Burman, which was incorporated into The Mediapro Studio, his attention has shifted to creating and producing series for the past seven years, most notably Prime Video’s “Yosi, the Regretful Spy,” reckoned by many as the best title playing Berlinale Series in 2022.
“For 20 years, I made films. In my twenties, thirties, forties, I made a film every two years,” he recalled in a recent conversation with Variety. “Now, I went seven years only making series. When I went back to the...

Madrid-based Begin Again Films has picked up Spanish distribution and international sales rights to Juan Gautier’s psychological thriller “El aspirante” (“The Aspirant”), about initiation into a masculine universe revolving around hazing of a university residence.
“El aspirante” plays at this year’s Málaga Work in Progress’ Wip España sidebar, an industry centerpiece at the Málaga Film Festival, now in its 27th edition.
The film toplines Jorge Motos, star of 2021’s “Lucas,” a film which earned him a Málaga Silver Biznaga for best actor and a Goya best new actor nomination; Lucas Nabor (“All the Names of God”), Eduardo Rosa (“La casa de las flores”) and Catalina Sopelana (“Sky Rojo”) complete the main cast.
“The Aspirant” is set on the Day Zero of hazing at the Tolentino university residence. Carlos and Dani accept the 24-hour challenge to fit in. But they will have to face the worst of themselves before everything turns into a tragedy.

Oscar winner Jeremy Irons has joined the cast of Palme d’Or-winning director Bille August’s prestige limited series “The Count of Monte Cristo,” which also stars Sam Claflin.
A sprawling adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel, the English-language series is produced by Mediawan’s banner Palomar, the leading Italian company behind “That Dirty Black Bag” and “The Name of the Rose,” in collaboration with another Mediawan label, France’s Demd Productions. The series’ five-month shoot will wrap in Malta in December, after having lensed in France and Italy.
The show underscores Mediawan’s strategy to pursue prestige scripted projects with strong international potential under its €100 million co-investment agreement signed earlier this year with private equity film Entourage Ventures.

Variety’s Global Locations Panel Conversations kicked off Saturday with a focus on Spain in which Juan-Manuel Guimeráns, Spain Film Commission general secretary, posited a new further reason for shooting in Spain.
Much is made of the country’s Omg locations, highlighted in “Game of Thrones,” its talent and technical prowess, and now extraordinary incentives. Now, as big international companies seek cost control and to promote sustainability, increasing attention will be paid to the Spanish industry’s ability to produce quality, cost-effective film and TV content very largely shot on a limited number of soundstages. Variety’s John Hopewell, in conversation with Guimeráns, pointed to the example of milestone series from Spain, such as “Grand Hotel,” “Velvet” and the first two parts of “Money Heist” (“La Casa de Papel”). In the final stretches of the conversation, Guimeráns drilled down on some of key projects and recently opened studio facilities in Spain.

Set and shot north of Barcelona in Manresa, “You Would Do It Too,” from David Victori, is a lightning-fast eight-part half-hour thriller following a bus heist gone awry. Written and directed by Victori, it is also the first Spanish production resulting from an alliance struck between Legendary Television and Spain’s Espotlight Media.
Victori will travel to Miami and speak at the New Talent Modela panel at Content Americas on Jan. 25 as Legendary Television, who hold worldwide rights, aim to close a deal for Latin America off the Miami conference.
Also created by Victori, the series will debut exclusively on Disney+ in Spain. Anne Thomopoulos (Legendary) and Anxo Rodríguez (Espotlight) co-produce the series, which is a natural next step for a director who has been building a canon of thrillers through the years.

Sky Rojo is a thriller series created by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato starring Verónica Sánchez, Lali Espósito and Yany Prado.
Sky Rojo re-does itslef in this third, last and almost melancholic season in a story that wishes to be redone as it finishes and manages to do so with the force and personality of a series which you will either love or hate precisely because of its force, provocation and characters at their edgiest.
Sky Rojo is an attractive combination of a thriller that is full of thugs and a road movie, also tough about some girls who escape from a bordello and leave behind an endless series of bodies, persecutions and situations that are embarrassing, hot, romantic and mad… a combination that has delighted many and, because of its humor which sometimes crosses a line between correctness, has not become popular with the more “family style” audience.

2023 has arrived, and to kick off the new year Netflix has a number of new additions hitting the streaming service in January. New Year’s Day marks the launch of the new original limited series “Kaleidoscope,” with episodes presented to subscribers in random order leading up to the big finale. The show chronicles the events before, during and after a major heist, with Giancarlo Esposito leading the cast, and is designed to be watched (and enjoyed) in any order.
Another high-profile Netflix original in January is “You People,” a new comedy film co-written by Jonah Hill and Kenya Barris, with Hill starring opposite Eddie Murphy in a premise that evokes “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” as he vies for the approval of his girlfriend’s father so he can marry her. Barris directed the comedy film, which arrives on Jan. 27.

2022 represented Netflix’s 25th (!!) year of operations as a company. Unfortunately, the streamer celebrated its 25th birthday with some earnings losses, massive cancelations, and a whole host of bad press. What will year 26 hold for the little Blockbuster killer that could? We now have a good idea thanks to Netflix’s list of new releases for January 2023.
Netflix is kicking off 2023 with some muscular original series…and in one instance we mean literally muscular. Vikings: Valhalla season 2 will premiere on Jan. 13, bringing some much needed Norse mayhem back to television. Other titles of note include Ginny & Georgia season 2 (Jan. 5), and That ’90s Show (Jan. 19). The most intriguing option, however, might be what Netflix is choosing to open its year with. Kaleidoscope premieres on Jan. 1 and will present a heist story that will be told in a random order for each Netflix viewer.
Meanwhile, the true crime machine continues apace for Netflix in 2023. Jan.

Álex Pina is going underground for his next Netflix project.
The streamer announced Monday that the “Money Heist” creator is developing a series based on a Spanish newspaper article published last year about an increase in the number of bunkers purchased post-pandemic.
Of the article, Pina said:
Some of the new shelters that were being built were luxury homes in the subsoil. Up to 15 floors down, with exclusive services such as cinema, pool, spa, gym and common gardens. With water and food to survive more than five years. An underground community for 75 people. And then we thought about what life would be like there. Social, family and romantic relationships, in an underground shelter to which they had hastily and exclusively fled.
The series, which is still untitled, will be Pina’s fourth with Netflix. His previous projects are “Sky Rojo,” “White Lines,” and “Money Heist” (known in Spain as “La Casa de Papel...

Money Heist creator Álex Pina has renewed his creative partnership with Netflix and already is working on his next series.
The Spanish auteur already has made three seasons of the hit heist thriller along with the likes of Sky Rojo, White Lines and a Money Heist spinoff centered on Pedro Alonso’s Berlin character, which is due for release in 2023.
His untitled next Netflix project was inspired by a Spanish newspaper article about the increase of purchasing bunkers after the pandemic.
Pina said Netflix has allowed him to produce “risky and different projects, which have been written with total freedom.”
“This new stage is an extension of trust as we stand alongside some of the most important creators of contemporary fiction and bridge the gaps that have existed until very recently between North America and the rest of the world,” he added.

Photo: 'Sky Rojo'/Netflix 'Sky Rojo' chases, quite literally, the lives of three completely different women who, because of a cruel twist of fate, end up working as prostitutes in a Spanish brothel. After a failed attempt at killing their pimp, the three women flee the scene and fight courageously to survive between the hands of hitmen and nasty men. 'Sky Rojo' encourages anger and revenge in the best of ways. As the episodes pass, the show conducts you into a high-rise of red emotions, where fuming anger is the main sentiment towards almost all male characters. The Spanish-speaking series keeps its audience intrigued by putting in the forefront the ongoing question of morality. Entertaining its viewers while showcasing its characters struggle and wrestle against the ancient query “do the ends justify the means?” Related article: ‘In the Heights’ – Behind the Scenes and Full...

Netflix Spain has dropped a trailer for the highly anticipated second season of its high-octane Spanish thriller series “Sky Rojo,” coming to the platform worldwide on July 23.
Shifting from the Spanish noir aesthetics of “Money Heist,” “Sky Rojo” opts for a brightly colored, neon palette to mix several genres into something its creators Álex Pina and Esther Martínez have dubbed “Latin Pulp.” In another shift, the duo has also cut each of the season’s eight episodes to a punchy 25-minute runtime.
In “Sky Rojo” season one, three exotic dancers are forced into prostitution after becoming victims of a human trafficking scheme. After a confrontation with club-owner-turned-pimp Romeo turned violent, the three broke from their chains of bondage and fled across the Spanish Canary Island of Tenerife. Spanish actor Verónica Sanchez (“Gordos”), Argentine singer-actor Lali Espósito (“That’s Not Cheating”) and Cuban up-and-comer Yany Prado (“Tres Milagros”) play the three lead roles in the series.

Netflix Spain’s most ambitious series release of 2021, “Sky Rojo,” the new original from “Money Heist” creators Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, will launch in nine days time, premiering worldwide on the platform March 19.
Shifting from the dark, almost noir aesthetics of “Money Heist,” the new series utilizes a brightly colored, grindhouse aesthetic for the new series in a mix of genres its creators have dubbed “Latin Pulp.” The series is also a departure in format for the two, who trade in the hour-long episodes of “Money Heist” for eight punchy, 25-minute episodes, to be copied in the series’ already-confirmed second season.
“Sky Rojo” is headlined by the international trio of Spain’s Verónica Sanchez (“Gordos”), Argentine superstar actor-singer-songwriter Lali Espósito (“That’s Not Cheating”) and Cuban standout Yany Prado (“Tres Milagros”). The three play exotic dancers-turned-prostitutes trapped in the world of sex trafficking, each with a dagger hanging over their head.

March brings breezes loud and shrill/stirs the dancing daffodil. Bit of poetry for you there. What Sara Coleridge fails to mention is that March also brings season seven of Brooklyn Nine-Nine to Netflix UK, more weekly episodes of Riverdale season five, a brand new sci-fi series from the creators of Misfits, a new film directed by Amy Poehler and a host of cool animated series.
The One (pictured above) is an eight-part British series created by Howard Overman about a near-future world in which a DNA test can track down your perfect partner. It’s adapted from John Marrs’ novel of the same name, and yes, has a strikingly similar premise to US anthology sci-fi Soulmates. Another fun new UK addition is The Irregulars, a period supernatural fantasy set in the Sherlock Holmes universe in which a bunch of ragtag kids not only have to save the world from darkness,...

Netflix Spain’s most highly-anticipated series release of 2021, “Sky Rojo,” the new original from “Money Heist” creators Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, will launch worldwide on March 19.
