For some reason, there has yet to be a mainstream Hollywood feature film about Donald Trump dramatizing any aspect of Trump's life, with an actor portraying him.
There have been countless documentaries about Trump, both for him and against him, and various comedians have portrayed him, including Alec Baldwin and later James Austin Johnson on Saturday Night Live.
The Comey Rule, a 2020 Showtime miniseries based on the memoirs of former FBI director James Comey, starred Brendan Gleeson as the 45th president, opposite Jeff Daniels as Comey.
At the same time, quite a few feature films, like The Oath in 2018 and Irresistible and The Hunt in 2020, have attempted to make dramatic hay out of the political controversies of the Trump years.
However, those who have not featured a Trump-based character have not referenced him directly.
However, what the movies have avoided is a direct dramatization of any part of Trump's life,...

For as much as Rod Serling's landmark anthology series "The Twilight Zone" reinvented the genre of science fiction storytelling, many of its best episodes also deal in the world of the fantastical, whether through witches, time-traveling radios, or just plain inexplicable phenomena. What kept "The Twilight Zone" consistent through it all is its focus on human nature and irony, the idea of following desire ultimately leading to one's downfall. You can see that in many of the classic episodes of the show, no matter what the genre is.
That focus on human drama is what keeps "Jess-Belle," a most unusual episode of "The Twilight Zone," in the running for the show's top tier. For one, "Jess-Belle" came out of the show's difficult fourth season, during which CBS had contracted hour-long episodes, twice as long as the episodes' usual length, per Marc Scott Zicree's indispensable "Twilight Zone Companion." It’s the last full weekend of the shorter month of February, and it’s hard to think that anything will do well enough to have any sort of impact on a month that barely recovered from January with a better-than-expected Presidents Day weekend. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
What we get this weekend as far as new wide releases is an anime project, a faith-based drama and a quirky indie of sorts from an Oscar-winning filmmaker, which should all enter the Top 10 interspersed with returning movies.
Crunchyroll is releasing “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Hashira Training” into 1,962 theaters. It’s a similar theatrical release as what’s been done with “The Chosen,” in that it’s actually made up of two episodes from the popular Crunchyroll anime series, the conclusion of the “Swordsmith Village Arc” and the first episode of the “Hashira Training Arc,...

August isn't especially famous for its great movies. As months go, the eighth one on the calendar has often been a bit of a wasteland for Hollywood, as blockbusters peter off, kids have a lot less free time and money, and studio executives need to find somewhere to dump their proverbial dead bodies.
If you want a good example, you can pretty much throw a dart at any year after "Jaws" popularized the concept of summer blockbuster season. For example, let's take a look at 1993. 30 years ago, August was a month for dreck comedies like "Son of the Pink Panther," family film misfires like "Father Hood" and "Surf Ninjas," and the weird-ass "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday."
But then again, there are exceptions to every rule. There were also a few excellent motion pictures in August 1993. The increasingly timeless classic "The Fugitive" came out that month, along with...

A show like “Skull Island” usually gets bogged down by demands and expectations. The new animated Netflix series isn’t about King Kong, but the big fella definitely makes his presence known.
Given that this eight-episode season exists within a broader umbrella that also encompasses kaiju of all kinds, you’d expect that series creator and showrunner Brian Duffield would have to wade through an ocean of demands and limitations. Instead, writing “Skull Island” became a chance to focus on a new batch of explorers who find themselves on Kong’s home island and discover otherworldly creatures dotting its beaches and forests.
Duffield said that his experience on “Skull Island” wasn’t hampered by the usual meddling and franchise maintenance preciousness that we’ve come to associate with high-profile shows that have become brand extensions, regardless of what medium they’re presented. The biggest “Skull Island” sticking point was the...

Cannes Review: About Dry Grasses is a Luminous Summation of Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Soul-Stirring Cinema
The pastures in Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s luminous new film are only dry at the very end. Save for that brief summery coda, the landscape in About Dry Grasses remains a snowcapped immensity where prairies are ringed by belittling peaks, people stand out as calligraphic silhouettes, and snow falls so heavy as to blot out everything. It’s as if it fell “to make oblivion possible,” observes art teacher Samet (Deniz Celiloglu), and in a film populated with wanderers trying to start anew, those words echo like a prayer. Geographically and thematically close to the rest of Ceylan’s oeuvre, the film finds him working once again in a remote corner of Eastern Anatolia and revisiting leitmotifs in his preferred mode: long, talky symposiums that pit characters against each other in games of verbal fencing. But none of it feels like a retreading. If anything, About Dry Grasses is both...

South Korean executive Jeongin Hong never planned to become a movie mogul. After studying economics at Princeton and putting in distinguished stints in private equity at Boston Consulting and Goldman Sachs (“I’m a science and economics guy,” he says), he was lured back to the family business in 2015. His family’s firm happens to be JoongAng Group, arguably Korea’s largest media conglomerate. Founded by Hong’s grandfather, Hong Jin-ki, the company publishes Korea’s most widely read newspapers, owns a university and a skyscraper, and controls major broadcaster Jtbc, among many other business lines. Hong was initially pulled back into the patrilineal corporate fold to help with corporate strategy; but in 2017 he proposed to his elder brother, JoongAng Group’s current CEO, Jeongdo Hong, that the time was right to further capitalize on the Korean content wave still sweeping the globe by restructuring their conglomerate’s collection of...

Leonardo DiCaprio could be invited to join the cast of Netflix’s Emmy-winning global smash hit ‘Squid Game’ in a future season, series writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk has said, reports ‘Variety’.
At a congratulatory press conference in Seoul on Friday, when asked if any known Hollywood actor would star in ‘Squid Game’ Season 2, Hwang said, according to ‘Variety’: “There will be no known Hollywood actor in Season 2. That’s not in the plan and if the stage changes, maybe in Season 3 — but for Season 2, it is still set in Korea. Leonardo DiCaprio did say he’s a big fan of ‘Squid Game’, so maybe if time, or chances, allow, we can ask him to join the games.”
The second season of ‘Squid Game’, Hwang confirmed, will commence shooting in 2023 and release in 2024. “We will start shooting Season 2 next year and it’ll be released the following year,” the series writer-director said.

Emma Roberts has jumped on board Madame Web, the Sony spinoff centered on the Spider-Man character, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
S.J. Clarkson is set to direct the feature, which is part of Sony’s growing stable of films based on Marvel characters. Roberts, a regular on FX’s American Horror Story anthology, also appeared in The Hunt and Netflix’s feature Holidate. Her credits also include Fox’s Scream Queens and UglyDolls.
Introduced in the 1980 comic The Amazing Spider-Man #210, Madame Web is a clairvoyant mutant who specializes in predicting the future of Spider-themed superheroes, having mentored not only Peter Parker’s alter ego, but also multiple generations of heroes calling themselves Spider-Woman.
Traditionally depicted as a blind, paralyzed old woman, she is surrounded by a web-like machine necessary to keep her alive, meaning that she stays away from direct conflict, and rather sends others on missions.

"If you believe in a God, gentlemen, start praying to him." Mill Creek Ent. has revealed an official trailer for The Most Dangerous, which looks like a made-for-tv knock off remake of the classic short story of the same name. Erzulie is a Haitian voodoo goddess and a protector of women and children. It’s also the title of the debut feature from director Christine Chen and her co-writer Camille Gladney which places the goddess in a Louisianna swamp with some vacationing women who are going to need some protection.
Wendy, Zoe, Violet, and Allison (Haley Raines; His Stretch of Texas Ground) are getting together for a much-needed vacation. The city has shut down Wendy’s project and fired her and Zoe is getting over an abusive relationship.

Four films, “Decision to Leave,” “Broker,” “The Hunt” and “No Return” selected for this year’s Cannes Film Festival shed rays of hope for a positive uptake in the Korean film industry, severely damaged due to the Covid pandemic. Juxtaposed against a fruitful run in 2019, the year Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” won the Palme d’Or, the massive slow down of the industry saw box office sales plummeting, sizable shrinking of the business, theater closures and a backlog of unreleased films
At last year’s Busan Film Festival’s Asian Contents & Film Market veteran film director Park Chan Wook said the release date for “Decision to Leave” was uncertain and as no one is rushing, the team is constantly retouching parts of the film. Now with a paradigm shift in consumer habits, what does the road to recovery look like?

Cannes 2022 unfolds in an atmosphere of uncertainty as the war in Ukraine grinds on, the global film industry sputters back from the pandemic, and diversity and gender parity issues continue to confront festival director Thierry Fremaux. That also goes for his competition jury, who along with Fremaux gave respective press conferences ahead of Tuesday night’s opening night screening of “The Artist” Oscar-winner Michel Hazanavicius’ “Final Cut,” an enjoyable comedic French remake of the Japanese zombie movie “One Cut of the Dead,” and starring Romain Duris and Berenice Bejo.
“This year, everyone wanted to come to Cannes and meet together again,” said Fremaux, who greeted opening night attendees at the top of the Palais tapis rouge. They were friendlier than the interlocutors at his Monday press conference, who grilled him about everything from gender parity to the festival’s glitchy ticketing system and new partner Tiktok. “They didn’t want to talk about cinema,...

The latest in our series of writers highlighting lesser-known films available to stream is a recommendation for a tough Mads Mikkelsen survival thriller
I’d happily watch Mads Mikkelsen sit in silence for an hour and a half. Whether he’s playing a weepy-eyed Bond villain, an alcoholic teacher, or the bloke who designed the Death Star, the Danish actor imbues all of his performances with a sort of brooding intensity that often transcends the need for any form of dialogue. That’s exactly why he’s the perfect casting for Arctic, an icy survival drama in which his deserted protagonist has no one to speak to, aside from himself, a barely conscious helicopter co-pilot and a very angry polar bear.
Directed by Joe Penna, a former YouTuber making his feature debut, Arctic was initially screened at Cannes in 2018, but later went under the radar thanks to a limited theatrical release.

Damon Lindelof and Tara Hernandez's mysterious new TV show has landed its lead: Betty Gilpin is set to star in Peacock's "Mrs. Davis," according to Variety.
The "Glow" star will reportedly play a nun who goes up against "an all-powerful A.I" in the series, which is being billed as "an exploration of faith vs. technology." None of this comes as a surprise from Lindelof, whose expansive and heartfelt work often tackles lofty themes of faith juxtaposed against earthbound struggles.

Betty Gilpin (Glow) and Damon Lindelof are reuniting for one of Peacock’s most highly-anticipated dramas. Gilpin will star in the leading role in Mrs. Davis, which comes from Tara Hernandez (Young Sheldon) and Lindelof and Warner Bros. Television, where the executive producers are under overall deals. Gilpin and Lindelof previously worked together on the subversive satirical thriller The Hunt. Plot details are being kept under wraps. What we do know is that according to the streaming service, Mrs. Davis “is an exploration of faith versus technology — an epic battle of biblical and binary proportions.” Furthermore, we know that Gilpin’s character is “a nun who goes to battle against an all-powerful Artificial Intelligence.” In addition to her work on Glow (for which she was nominated for three Primetime Emmys), Gilpin’s TV credits include Elementary, Masters of Sex, and Nurse Jackie. It’s certainly a hope that the rich wouldn’t start thinking that they could hunt the poor for sport, but Surviving the Game isn’t the only movie that’s depicted rich socialites doing exactly that. The other movie that comes to mind is The Hunt, but that movie has more of a political lean to it since the ‘woke’ hunters are going after those that don’t have the same beliefs as they do. In Surviving the Game, Mason, played by Ice T, is a homeless man that is surly and definitely aggressive but still shows compassion and a willingness to contribute to

Feel a movement in the force? That sense may come from new rumors about a development in the Star Wars universe. According to Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider, Damon Lindelof may be working on a Star Wars movie for Lucasfilm. Now, Sneider is quick to clarify that this is very much speculation at this point, as no rep has yet confirmed or denied the rumor. But in his newsletter The Ankler, Sneider lays out a compelling case for considering Lindelof as a potential writer, linking to a 2020 Fandom interview in which the writer admits that he’d like to try a Disney tentpole. As those who follow Lindelof on Instagram may already know: he is quite the Star Wars fan already.
Whether this news counts as a great disturbance or a new hope for Star Wars fans is a matter of debate. No one doubts Lindelof’s commitment to science fiction,...

When the Gotham Award nominations were announced this week, Reed Birney was the sole member of the “Mass” ensemble recognized for his work in the searing drama about two couples grappling with the aftershocks of a school shooting. Some prognosticators were surprised that Birney and not Ann Dowd or Martha Plimpton, who have more emotional, galvanic moments in the film, made the cut for his pared down and minimal performance. But then they may have failed to recognize the shadings that Birney gives his character, Richard, and the moments of intense feeling that break through his facade as he grapples with the fact that his son was a mass murderer. It’s a master class in repression that is devastating to watch and a tribute to Birney’s talent that he’s able to make the audience care for the brisk and business-like father of a killer.

Valdimar Jóhannsson’s Icelandic-Swedish-Polish drama “Lamb,” starring Noomi Rapace was awarded best film and actress for Rapace at the 54th edition of Sitges’ International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia, which wrapped Sunday.
The prizes add to an Originality Prize which the film received when competing at July’s Cannes Un Certain Regard.
