Sting is the new film from Australian writer/director Kiah Roache-Turner, the man behind the Mad Max meets Dawn of the Dead films Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead and its sequel Wyrmwood: Apocalypse as well as the over-the-top ghost hunting film Nekrotronic. All three of them were fun films that made good use of a small budget, so a big bug movie seemed like a good fit for his skills.
This time out, he’s traded his apocalyptic scenarios for the goings-on in the apartment building where an alien spider egg comes to rest after a trip through Earth’s atmosphere. It hatches, and its occupant is found by Charlotte, who dubs the creature Sting,

Plot: A 12-year-old girl decides to keep a spider as a pet, not aware that the eight-legged creature is not of this world. The more it eats, the more it grows, and soon a giant space arachnid is running loose in an apartment building, snacking on the residents.
Review: Filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner is best known for his wild and crazy zombie movies Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead and Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, which blended inspiration from Mad Max and Dawn of the Dead to tell the story of a unique zombie outbreak where the living dead have flammable blood and exhale methane. I enjoyed both of those movies, and though I haven’t seen Roache-Turner’s action comedy Nekrotronic yet, it sounds like it’s pretty much in line with the tone of the Wyrmwood flicks, as it tells the story of “a man who discovers that he is part of a...

Another shark movie is set to join the already bloody waters of the American Film Market, this time from Brit banner Cornerstone.
The company has reteamed with genre writer and director Kiah Roache-Turner (Sting, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, Nekrotronic) on his upcoming survival action thriller Beast of War, in which a band of soldiers stranded in the open ocean must face a heart-pounding battle for survival against the ultimate apex predator — a great white shark. Cornerstone will handle worldwide sales and distribution and will launch the project at the upcoming AFM.
Set in 1942, Beast of War follows a warship carrying hundreds of Australian soldiers across the Timor Sea to the frontline of WWII. Suddenly, Japanese fighter jets scream out of the sky, and within minutes the ocean becomes a hell of steel, fire, oil and blood. With the vessel destroyed, a handful of soldiers build a makeshift raft from floating debris as they cling to their lives.

Richard Kadrey, author of the fantasy book series “Sandman Slim,” has written an original screenplay called “Dark West” that will be adapted into a movie by “Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead” writer-director Kiah Roache-Turner.
Chris Goldberg’s Winterlight Pictures has optioned “Dark West” and set Roache-Turner to write the next draft of the script. Roache-Turner is eyeing to direct the film in his native Australia. Kadrey is also working on turning “Dark West” into a graphic novel.
“Dark West” is a vampire revenge thriller set on the highways of Texas that follows two car thieves who accidentally T-bone a pair of vampires in the middle of the night. The story is in the vein of the classic ’80s horror films “The Hitcher” and Kathryn Bigelow’s “Near Dark.”

“Have you learned nothing from video games?” asks one character during a momentary lull from noisy mayhem in “Guns Akimbo.” It’s the wrong question for this movie, whose makers have clearly learned from little else. Those wanting to kiss a few brain cells goodbye may enjoy this bombastic, crassly jokey action cartoon with Daniel Radcliffe as a dweeb who finds himself unpleasantly designated a new player in the unsimulated kill-or-die game he’s been watching online.
Jason Lei Howden’s Kiwi-German co-production should do a bit better than last year’s vaguely similar Tiff-premiering enterprise “Nekrotronic,” but it still seems primarily a streaming item.
Radcliffe’s Miles is a stereotypical 21st-century nerd living alone in an action-figure-crammed flat, whose only girlfriend is the ex he’s still stuck on (Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Nova), and who’s bullied by a frat-bro boss at his job working for a company...

‘Top End Wedding’, ‘Hearts and Bones’ and ‘The King’ are among the 34 longlisted films.
Some 34 feature films will compete for nominations for this year’s Aacta Awards, and the longlist covers a diverse range of titles, from box office earners like Top End Wedding and Storm Boy, through to critically lauded films like The Nightingale and micro budget indies such as Suburban Wildlife.
However, perhaps the most notable inclusion in the longlist is David Michôd’s Netflix Original The King, which premiered at Venice Film Festival last week to an eight-minute standing ovation.
Typically, to be eligible for Aacta Awards, a film – even when made for a streaming platform – must have paid cinema screenings in Australia or local festival play.

‘Nekrotronic.’
Kiah Roache-Turner’s Nekrotronic opened in the Us last weekend as a multi-platform release.

The eOne-owned distributor did not share box office figures, which are typically modest for day-and-date releases. The benefit of the theatrical exposure is that the reviews and publicity give the film a profile which pays off in ancillary revenues.

Coming from writer and director Kiah Roache-Turner, I was very much looking forward to new Australian horror comedy Nekrotronic. His previous movie Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead was a fantastic all action kick up the ass that the zombie genre needed, so a new movie from him about demons sounded even more intriguing. And we’ve had to wait five long years for it!
It would be too simple to say this is a movie about ghosts. Even if you opened that up a little and said it was a ‘supernatural’ movie, that would be too simple. Because this involves demons, the Internet, zombies (kind of), possession and yes, ghosts.

From Guerrila Films and Hopscotch Features, directed by Kiah Roache-Turner, debuted in 2018 Canada during the Toronto International Film Festival.
This is a B movie by even the most generous standards, but like it’s predecessor, Wyrmwood, it’s a great one, depending upon how much you like these kinds of movies. While Wyrmwood took on the zombie apocalypse, Nekrotronic takes on demons, demonic possession, and the dangers of cell phone life. Movies out of Australia always seem to have a better sense of humor about these things than the stock American films (with Zombieland being a notable exception). The cast handles their roles with appropriate amounts of gravity and incredulity. The plot, in a nutshell, is about Howard North, a sewage maintenance worker who by chance finds out his true identity in the middle of an attempt by demons to gain dominion over the world by...

As the calendar creeps closer towards the Halloween season, we have a brand new month of VOD and Digital releases coming our way throughout the month of August. Things kick off on the 2nd with the latest installment of Blumhouse’s Into the Dark series, School Spirit, and the directorial debut of Jason Mewes, Method in the Madness, also hits various platforms the same day.
August 6th is a very busy day for digital releases, as we have 10 different films coming out that day, including Brightburn, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, The Night Sitter, and Perception. Nekrotronic, featuring Monica Bellucci, arrives on the 9th, and just a few days later, The Banana Splits Movie hits digital on the 13th, and I’m still not sure what to make of it, but I will definitely be watching that night to see just what on earth they’ve done with these classic TV characters.

Wayne Blair and Miranda Tapsell on the set of ‘Top End Wedding’.
Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding has edged past Shawn Seet’s Storm Boy to rank as the highest grossing Australian film this year.
At the half way mark of the year, the Australian films and feature docs released in cinemas, plus holdovers, have racked up a modest $15.6 million, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
That’s a long way below the $40 million generated in the same period last year, led by Peter Rabbit’s $26.6 million, Breath’s $4.4 million (finishing with $4.6 million) and Sweet Country’s $2 million.
So can the industry surpass or match the 2018 calendar year total of $57.4 million? That was the third biggest year ever behind 2001’s $63.1 million and the all-time record of 2015’s $88.1 million, the year of Mad Max: Fury Road, The Dressmaker and Oddball.
Exhibitors are optimistic about the outlook for the rest of the year,...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: What better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? This week, […]

Following its crowd-pleasing premiere at Tiff last year, the supernatural cyber-centric horror thriller Nekrotronic will be unleashed this August from Momentum Pictures, and ahead of its release, the film's official trailer teases plenty of high-tech, demonic carnage in the latest movie from Kiah Roache-Turner (Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead).
"Howard North, a down on his luck sewage worker, gets dragged into a global conflict between the Nekromancers, a family of badass demon hunters, and Finnegan (Monica Bellucci) - an evil demon who absorbs people's souls to increase her power. When Howard finds out the truth behind Finnegan's past and her dark plans for the future, he teams up with his new friends to discover he is the ultimate Nekromancer, the only one with the power to defeat her and save the world."

"Suck on this!" Momentum Pictures has debuted an official trailer for the indie action horror comedy film Nekrotronic, made by Australian filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner (Wyrmwood). This wacky, trippy, neon-filled demon hunter film is about a man who discovers that he is part of a secret sect of magical beings who hunt down and destroy demons in the internet. Ben O'Toole plays Howard 'Howie' North, a down-on-his-luck sewage worker dragged into a global conflict. Monica Bellucci plays the villain, an evil demon who absorbs people's souls to gain more power. The full cast includes David Wenham, Caroline Ford, Tess Haubrich, Benedict Hardie, and Epine Bob Savea. This reminds of all these amazing films I'd find in the back corner of my local VHS rental store, totally weird & badass & so fun. This actually looks mega cool. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Kiah Roache-Turner's Nekrotronic, direct from YouTube: Howard 'Howie'...

Ben O’Toole.
After graduating from Waapa in 2011, Ben O’Toole played policeman Pete for three seasons of Love Child, had supporting roles in The Water Diviner and Hacksaw Ridge and co-starred in the Us movies Detroit and 12 Strong.
The Brisbane-born actor plays the leads in Alister Grierson’s comedic thriller Bloody Hell and in Kiah Roache-Turner’s horror-comedy Nekrotronic, yet he is far from satisfied with where he is at in his career.
“I still have a lot more to learn; I have much further to go,” says O’Toole, who has bases in Sydney and Los Angeles, the latter with actor-director housemate Kick Gurry.
Working with Mel Gibson on Hacksaw Ridge and with Chris Hemsworth on 12 Strong were great learning experiences.
“Mel was incredible and very powerful in communicating what he wanted us to do, and he encouraged Vince Vaughn and me to improvise,” he says.

Tess Haubrich in ‘Bad Mothers.’
Tess Haubrich is making her Us TV series debut in Treadstone, a CIA drama commissioned by the USA Network.
The Bad Mothers, Nekrotronic, Pine Gap and Wolf Creek star has a recurring role in the Universal Cable Productions’ series which is shooting in Budapest.
Created by Tim Kring (Heroes) and Ben Smith, a producer of the Bourne franchise, the show explores the origins and present-day adventures of a CIA black ops program known as Operation Treadstone — a covert program that uses behaviour-modification protocol to turn recruits into nearly superhuman assassins.
The first season follows sleeper agents across the globe as they’re mysteriously “awakened” to resume their deadly missions.
The cast includes The Killing’s Michelle Forbes, Almost Famous’ Patrick Fugit, The Leftovers’ Michael Gaston and Bollywood star Shruti Haasan in her English-language debut.

‘Nekrotronic.’
Kiah Roache-Turner’s sci-fi horror comedy Nekrotronic will be released in the Us in select cinemas and on VOD and digital HD on August 9 by Momentum Pictures.
“I’m really excited: I think day-and-date is the future for most independent films in the Us,” Kiah tells If. “Some say it is the end of cinema but it’s not: it’s a different way of delivering films to eyeballs.”
One advantage of the day-and-date strategy is limiting the potential for piracy. The Roache-Turner brothers’ Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead was available on iTunes in the Us before the Australian release. “Piracy killed us,” he says.
Produced by Andrew Mason and Troy Lum for Hopscotch Features and Tristan Roache-Turner for Guerrilla Films, Nekrotronic stars Monica Bellucci as Finnegan, CEO of the sinister Daemokon corporation, who is determined to feast on every human soul on the planet via a new smartphone app.

‘Top End Wedding’.
It’s been a quiet start for the year for Australian films at the national box office, particularly compared to last year when Peter Rabbit and Sweet Country were drawing crowds.
However exhibitors are very optimistic about the outlook for the rest of the year, including Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding which opened yesterday, Rachel Ward’s Palm Beach and Kriv Stenders’ Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan (both August 8) and Rachel Griffiths’ Ride Like a Girl (September 26).
Ten new releases plus holdovers collectively racked up $9.06 million through April 30, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
That’s way below the first four months of 2018, which generated $32 million, with Will Gluck’s Peter Rabbit making $25.4 million en route to a final total of $26.7 million and Warwick Thornton’s Sweet Country $2 million.

The disappearance of eOne from the theatrical distribution landscape in Australia/New Zealand is being lamented by exhibitors, producers, former staffers and even rival distributors.
The demise of the distributor known for its sharp commercial tastes marks the end of an era dating back to 2002 with the founding of Hopscotch Films by Troy Lum, Frank Cox and Sandie Don.
Despite the parent company’s assurances, eOne’s exit almost certainly means there is one less avenue for Australian producers seeking finance and distribution.

“From the days of Hopscotch to transforming into eOne, Sandie Don, Troy Lum and their incredible team have bought passion and intelligence to the distribution landscape,” she tells If.

In a further sign of consolidation in the independent film sector, Universal Pictures International will take over the theatrical marketing and distribution of Entertainment One (eOne) releases in Australia and New Zealand.
The new arrangement takes effect in April and will include Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding (which opens on May 2), Rachel Ward’s Palm Beach, Shannon Murphy’s Babyteeth and the Roache-Turner brothers’ Nekrotronic.
There was no immediate indication of layoffs among the eOne team headed by MD Sandie Don. Formerly head of distribution, Don was elevated to MD in November 2017 after Troy Lum stepped up to become executive vice president of international productions.
Lum departed eOne in November to focus on Hopscotch Features, his joint venture with writer John Collee and producer Andrew Mason, and was not replaced.

The good news for Australian cinema: Last year ranks as the third biggest ever for Oz films and feature docs released theatrically in the home market.
Another encouraging trend: Eight of the top 30 grossing titles were feature docs, led by Paul Damien Williams’ Gurrumul, Mark Joffe’s Jimmy Barnes: Working Class Boy, Ray Argall’s Midnight Oil 1984, Naina Sen’s The Song Keepers and Catherine Scott’s Backtrack Boys.
The not-so-good news: The top two films, Will Gluck’s Peter Rabbit and Bruce Beresford’s Ladies in Black accounted for nearly 70 per cent of total revenues, while 39 of the 61 new releases each made less than $100,000.
Collectively, local titles including holdovers racked up $57.4 million in 2018, trailing the 2001 total of $63.1 million, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia (Mpdaa)

Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner have parlayed their 2015 cult hit Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead into a digitally animated, interactive virtual reality experience and are developing a TV series spin-off and a video game.

The Australian titles released in cinemas this year including holdovers will overtake the calendar 2017 total in the next week or so, boosted by Bruce Beresford’s Ladies in Black.
Through the end of September the Oz films and feature docs had grossed $47.8 million, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia (Mpdaa), within spitting distance of last year’s $49.4 million.

Among the other September debutantes, Mark Grentell’s The Merger collected $405,000 and Benjamin Gilmour...

Horror-action-comedy hash “Nekrotronic” has mankind menaced by soul-sucking demons who’ve invaded the internet. A little bit “Tron” meets “Blade,” with a whole lot of other stuff thrown in, this cartoonish Aussie fanboy missive from the brothers Roache-Turner mashes together high energy, lowbrow humor, and a barrage of visual effects to enjoyable but rather numbing effect. Villainness Monica Bellucci may give a lift in some offshore quarters to a hybrid genre exercise whose lack of other star wattage — and excess of every other shiny or explosive thing — suggests target-audience access will be primarily via home formats.
A surfeit of doo-doo jokes start things off unpromisingly as average dude Howie (Ben O’Toole) and space-case sidekick Rangi (Epine Bob Savea) attend the former’s family business of sewage removal, their slogan being “We Take Your Shit.” But it turns out this is both our first and last glimpse of open-air calm...

‘Nekrotronic.’
Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner’s sci-fi horror-comedy Nekrotronic seems to have nearly as many detractors as ardent admirers judging by the reviews after the world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
The pro-camp lauded the film, one of 10 titles which screened in the Midnight Madness section, as insane fun with fantastical story elements and tongue-in-cheek humour. The naysayers derided the plot as over-the-top, silly and formulaic.
Produced by Andrew Mason and Troy Lum for Hopscotch Features and Tristan Roache-Turner for Guerrilla Films, the film stars Monica Bellucci as Finnegan, CEO of the sinister Daemokon corporation, who is determined to feast on every human soul on the planet via a new smartphone app.
Ben O’Toole and Epine Bob Savea play waste disposal workers who find themselves caught up in the conflict between Finnegan and a trio of Nekromancers: Luther (David Wenham) and his daughters Molly (Caroline Ford) and...

Appearing most recently in Amazon’s comedic drama Mozart in the Jungle and David Lynch’s Twin Peaks—in which she played herself—Monica Bellucci delighted in the opportunity to play a “real baddie” for the first time in her career, in Tiff-premiering genre-bender Nekrotronic. The second feature from Australia’s Kiah Roache-Turner—co-written by the director’s brother, Tristan—the sci-fi/horror pic stars Bellucci, Tess Haubrich, Caroline Ford and Ben O’Toole, following the Italian actress’s queen of the underworld and the band of demon-hunting Nekromancers out to bring her down.
Conjured up by artists with an interest in worldbuilding and genre films with a strong, specific voice, Nekromancer is indebted to the classics—Ghostbusters, Blade Runner, Evil Dead and Pulp Fiction, to name just a few. “This is kind of our homage to all of that,” Kiah explained, sitting down at Deadline’s Toronto Studio this morning with his brother,...

Shane’s Black’s “The Predator,” David Gordon Green’s “Halloween” reboot and Michael Moore’s “Fahrenheit 11/9” will all have world premieres at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival.
The titles were unveiled Thursday as part of the slates for the genre-centric Midnight Madness program and the Tiff Docs section.
“This year’s Midnight Madness slate promises another idiosyncratic confluence of established and emerging genre filmmakers,” said Peter Kuplowsky, Midnight Madness programmer. “To complement some of the buzziest provocations on the festival circuit, I have sought to curate an eccentric array of world premieres that demonstrate the dexterity of genre cinema as a canvas for both sublime satisfaction and stunning subversion. That includes the section’s two much-anticipated sequels, ‘The Predator’ and ‘Halloween,’ each of which boldly and brilliantly builds upon its mythic iconography to thrilling and surprising effect.”

Exclusive: Australia’s Hopscotch Features has optioned rights to hot debut novel The Ruin from Dervla McTiernan with plans to adapt it for the screen. The crime thriller by the Irish author has been a bestseller in Oz where she now lives. The project was brought to Hopscotch by Head of Production, Maeva Gatineau, and adds to the company’s expanding slate of both Australian and international titles.
Set in Galway, The Ruin follows detective Cormac Reilly as he is thrown back into a case from 20 years ago involving two children whose mother died of an overdose. It’s a twisting tale that delves into the dark heart of Ireland, examining police corruption and the abuses of the church through the eyes of Reilly — the kind of cop you’d trust with your life, and follow to hell and back.
