- After returning to the criminal underworld to repay a debt, John Wick discovers that a large bounty has been put on his life.
- Bound by an inescapable blood debt to the Italian crime lord, Santino D'Antonio, and with his precious 1969 Mustang stolen, John Wick--the taciturn and pitiless assassin who thirsts for seclusion--is forced to visit Italy to honour his promise. But, soon, the Bogeyman will find himself dragged into an impossible task in the heart of Rome's secret criminal society, as every killer in the business dreams of cornering the legendary Wick who now has an enormous price on his head. Drenched in blood and mercilessly hunted down, John Wick can surely forget a peaceful retirement as no one can make it out in one piece.—Nick Riganas
- About four days after the events of the first film, former assassin John Wick (Keanu Reeves) tracks down his stolen 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 at a chop shop owned by Abram Tarasov (Peter Stormare), brother of Viggo and uncle of Iosef (who shot John's dog).
Tarasov knew that Iosef made a mistake by killing John's dog and stealing his mustang (which was now in Tarasov's inventory) and was already in the process of loading all his assets and liquidating his business. He knew that eventually John Wick will come for him. Tarasov knows that John Wick already killed Viggo, Iosef and a dozen of his men over his car and a puppy. John once killed 3 men in a bar with a pencil. Before Tarasov can complete his evacuation, John arrives and announces his attack to Tarasov with a phone call. John dispatches Tarasov's men in a violent fight that heavily damages his car. He then spares Tarasov under the auspices of peace and returns home in his battered Mustang. The car is special to John as it has memories associated with his family.
Aurelio (John Leguizamo) (another chop shop owner) takes John's Mustang for repairs and John once more buries the tools of his violent past in his basement, indicating his retirement. John is visited by Italian crime lord Santino D'Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio). It is revealed that to complete his "impossible task", which allowed him to retire and marry Helen (Bridget Moynahan), John asked D'Antonio for help. It is also indicated that Helen has now passed away.
As a form of contract, D'Antonio swore John to a "Marker", an unbreakable promise symbolized by a "blood oath" medallion. D'Antonio presents the medallion to demand services from John, but John refuses, claiming that he is "retired". In retaliation, D'Antonio destroys John's house with a grenade launcher. John only survives as the first grenade throws John out of the house and into his back garden.
John walks all the way to the Continental Hotel in New York. Charon (Lance Reddick) is the concierge at the hotel. Winston (Ian McShane), the owner of the Continental hotel in New York City, reminds John that if he rejects the Marker, he will be violating one of the two unbreakable rules of the underworld: no killing on Continental grounds, and Markers must be honored. Winston says that Santino was within his rights to retaliate when John's marker to him was refused. The rules of the high table will lead to John being declared Ex-Communicado and he will be marked for elimination. Winston reminds John that he can retaliate against Santino, once he is free, but until then he has no option but to repay the marker.
John accepts his commitment and meets with D'Antonio, who tasks him with assassinating his sister Gianna D'Antonio (Claudia Gerini) so he can claim her seat on the "High Table", a council of high-level crime lords. There are 12 seats at the High Table, one for each family. When Santino's father died, he willed the seat to Santino's sister, who represents Camora family at the High Table. John visits his locker to retrieve his work suit, a smaller stash of gold coins and his gun.
D'Antonio sends Ares (Ruby Rose), his personal bodyguard, to follow and keep an eye on John. John checks into the Continental Hotel in Rome, owned and managed by Julius (Franco Nero). There he activates all his old contacts to get a new suit (ready for close combat with a cutting edge body armor), new weapons, and the map of the ancient monuments of Rome including the temple and the catacombs where Gianna will be Coronated underneath.
In Rome, John infiltrates Gianna's celebratory party by using the catacombs below the ancient temple structure. John is able to confront Gianna when she is completely alone, as she had come into a private area of temple to freshen up. Gianna realizes that John was sent by Santino. Faced with certain death, Gianna chooses to commit suicide. While retreating, John dispatches most of Gianna's security. John enters the catacombs again, where he is ambushed by Santino D'Antonio's men led by Ares, who intend to "tie up loose ends" by killing him. After killing most of them (John manages to exit the catacombs before he can be intercepted by Ares), John is pursued by Gianna's bodyguard Cassian (Common). Their brutal fight is halted when they crash into the reception area of the Rome Continental, which - like the New York Continental - prohibits any "business" on its grounds. As the two reluctantly share a drink, Cassian vows revenge for Gianna's death.
After John returns to New York City, Santino D'Antonio opens a $7 million contract for John's death under the guise of avenging his sister, leading numerous assassins to attack him (unsuccessfully). Cassian confronts John once again in the subway. John wins the ensuing fight but leaves Cassian alive out of professional respect. Injured and desperate, John seeks help from the underground crime lord The Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne), whose subordinates treat his injuries and guide him to D'Antonio's location. John kills D'Antonio's bodyguards and wounds Ares, but D'Antonio is able to escape to the Continental. A supremely self-assured D'Antonio allows John to find him, then smugly makes it clear that he intends to remain there indefinitely, protected by the rules. Despite Winston's warnings, John then shoots and kills D'Antonio in the Continental dining room.
The next day, Winston sends for John and explains that, per the High Table, the contract on Wick has been doubled and offered globally. John is "Ex-Communicado" from the Continental and loses all access and privileges to underworld resources. Winston delays announcing John's Ex-Communication and post of the bounty on him globally by one hour to give him a head start. Winston also provides him with a Marker for future use. Before leaving, John advises Winston to send a message that he will kill anyone who comes after him. Suspicious of everyone as hit-men all across New York set their eyes on him, Wick then flees on foot with his faithful dog alongside him.
