It would make me happy, or at least relieved, to report that Ken Burns, Lynn Novick and Sarah Botstein’s new PBS documentary The U.S. and the Holocaust was inessential viewing — that this six-hour cautionary tale about what happens when the United States fails to live up to its humanitarian ideals both domestically and on a global stage just didn’t have anything fresh or relevant to say.
Unfortunately, at a moment at which “America First” rhetoric and anti-immigrant, anti-refugee sentiment remain fervent, as one state after another uses coded language to outlaw the teaching of any piece of our history that dares to deviate from a discernibly false narrative of American exceptionalism, The U.S. and the Holocaust stands as one of the most vital projects in Burns’ five-decade relationship with PBS.

As Gold Derby predicted, Barack Obama was just awarded the Best Narrator prize at the 2022 Creative Arts Emmys for the Netflix documentary series “Our Great National Parks.” The former U.S. president was, understandably, not in attendance to accept his first TV Academy honor. He is now halfway to Egot status, having already nabbed two Grammys for Best Spoken Word Album.
Obama fended off quite a formidable challenger in three-time Best Narrator Emmy winner David Attenborough, who was recognized this year for “The Mating Game.” The other three contenders in the lineup were returning nominees Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (“Black Patriots: Heroes of the Civil War”) and Lupita Nyong’o (“Serengeti II”) and category first-timer W. Kamau Bell (“We Need to Talk About Cosby”).

Premiere Entertainment has acquired the international rights to family faith-based film “The Girl Who Believes in Miracles” after the film’s solid performance at the U.S. box office over Easter.
The Oklahoma-shot feature was written and directed by “Hannah Montana” co-creator Richard Correll and stars Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino (“The Mighty Aphrodite”); Austyn Johnson (“The Greatest Showman”) and celebrated voice actor Pete Coyote (“The Roosevelts: An Intimate History”).
The feature, co-written by G.M. Mercier, focuses on a child called Sara (Johnson) who achieves overnight fame when her prayers appear to start healing local townsfolk.
These miracles come at a cost however, as the toll of fame and the girl’s deteriorating physical condition force those close to her to take action.
Produced by Trailmaker Productions and Gerson Productions in association with film investors Stephen Hays and Peter Graham’s 120dB Films, the title was released via Atlas Distribution to a total of 1,333 U.

The latest Ken Burns opus for PBS brought strong viewership for the public broadcaster.
The eight-part Country Music drew the biggest audience for a Burns project since The Roosevelts: An Intimate History in 2014. Across all platforms, the series averaged 6.8 million viewers per episode, beating the average for the last four Burns films.
"We couldn't be happier with the audience we reached with Country Music," said Burns. "We were fortunate to travel across the country to towns large and small to discuss this film and this history, and in each, we were met with new stories about ...

Though an instantly recognizable face from films such as “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial,” “A Walk to Remember” and “Erin Brockovich,” it is Peter Coyote’s voice — a coolly authoritative baritone with a Zen master’s holy roll — that has endeared him to documentary lovers and makers. Alrhough director-writer Alex Gibney used Coyote’s wisened narration for “Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room,” and “The Pacific Century,” it is Ken Burns’ work where Coyote’s tones are most welcomed. In a collaboration that started with the 1992 documentary “The West,” Coyote has gone on to narrate 11 of Burns’ PBS film series, becoming almost a DeNiro to the documentarian’s Scorsese.
Being a musician and musical collector since his adolescence made Coyote an apt choice to narrate Burns’ epic new “Country Music” series. But it is the actor-writer’s activist past in the 1960s, cofounding the Diggers — the anarchist communal group that sought...

It takes a special acting project to get Peter Coyote to leave his home in California, located about one and a half hours north of San Francisco.
“I'm quasi-retired,” said Coyote, 77, in a recent phone interview with TV Fanatic. “I have a pension from my union, and I don't have to work if I don't want to. Unless a project is compelling, I'm just not going to do it because I'd rather be home.”
Coyote's first TV role since a 2015 episode of Blue Bloods is on The Disappearance, a six-hour miniseries that debuts at 10/9c Tuesday, July 9, on Wgn America.
The series' titular incident is the disappearance on Anthony (played by Michael Riendeau), a precocious, curious boy who vanishes without a trace on his 10th birthday.
Coyote plays Henry Sullivan, Anthony's grandfather. Rounding out the cast are Aden Young (Rectify) as Anthony's father Luke, Camille Sullivan as Anthony's mother Helen,...

When "The Roosevelts: An Intimate History," from director Ken Burns and writer Geoffrey C. Ward, debuted on PBS last fall, a familiar political dynasty seemed suddenly fresh. Tracing the lives of Theodore, Franklin, and Eleanor over the course of nearly a century, the 14-hour epic breathed new life into its subjects by switching deftly between world-historical events and and the peculiarities of the Roosevelts' personalities—and Teddy, advocate of "the strenuous life," was the documentary's surprising star. More than a century after he became the 26th President of the United States, it turned out to be Tr's breakout role. With the news that Showtime is developing a limited series about the man behind the "Square Deal," the Progressive Party, and "Big Stick" diplomacy, written by David McKenna ("American History X"), Roosevelt is in the midst of what you might call a post-career resurgence. Along with the Showtime project...

One thing was pretty certain going into Friday night's Ace Eddie Awards ceremony honoring the best in editing: "Boyhood" was an odds-on lock to win the drama prize, and is, as ever, the frontrunner to win the Oscar in the category. So that happened. With "Birdman" tearing up the guild circuit, though, certainly plenty of us had an eye on it coming out on top in the comedy field, despite a lacking Oscar nod. Alas, that didn't happen. "The Grand Budapest Hotel," which was nominated for a film editing Oscar, came out on top. Cue more "what does it all mean" dialogue. It doesn't mean that much, though. There used to be a stat some folks would cling to re: Ace's place in the Best Picture build, but "12 Years a Slave" (nor "Gravity," for that matter) didn't win there. "The King's Speech" didn't win there. "No Country for Old Men,...

‘Boyhood’, ‘Grand Budapest’, ‘Lego Movie’ Score Big At 65th Ace Eddie Awards — Complete Winners List
Boyhood and The Grand Budapest Hotel took the respective top prizes for drama and comedy tonight at the 65th American Cinema Editors Awards. Complaints about the sound mix on Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar” clearly didn’t have much influence on the members of the Cinema Audio Society, who on Tuesday made the film one of the five nominees for the best feature-film sound mix of 2014.

Nominations have been announced for the 51st annual Cinema Audio Society Awards, and as ever with this group lately, there are a few surprises. For instance, "Unbroken" made the cut despite being mostly ignored by the guilds and industry groups so far, and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" showed up as well. The biggest jaw-dropper might just be that after months of being the poster child for sound complaints, somehow, some way, "Interstellar" ended up in the mix (no pun intended). There are always one or two that drop out, however. Last year, for example, another Marvel movie — "Iron Man 3" — was chalked up here. But it fell out in favor of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" with the Academy. I find myself wondering if "The Battle of the Five Armies" could make the cut this year as it's even more of an action/sound film than the last.

Movies made by women directors were snubbed by the Producers Guild of America when they announced the nominees today! Both "Selma" by Ava DuVernay and "Unbroken" by Angelina Jolie were left in the dust. I agree with not nominating the latter movie (sorry Ms. Jolie but "Unbroken" is too earnest for my taste) but "Selma" deserved a nod! It's a profound movie aided by DuVernay's skilled directing and David Oyelowo's fine performance as Martin Luther King Jr.
You know who I'm blaming for this? Paramount! The studio did not send screeners to Academy voters. Heck, they did not sent one to us, the Broadcast Film Critics Association. But after begging, they did send a link so I could watch "Selma" in time for our Critics' Choice Movie Award nominations.
"Selma" is a "late to the party" entry that is gaining momentum dashed by the PGA! If you remember, Clint Eastwood...

Richard Linklater‘s personal indie “Boyhood” and David Fincher’s dark blockbuster “Gone Girl” are among the nominees for the Producers Guild of America’s top film award, the PGA announced on Monday morning.
Other nominees for the PGA honor, which tends to be a reliable indicator of Oscar potential, are Clint Eastwood‘s “American Sniper,” the adventurous comic story “Birdman,” British biopics “The Imitation Game” and “The Theory of Everything,” Wes Anderson‘s stylish “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” the driving indie “Whiplash,” Bennett Miller’s subtle “Foxcatcher” and Dan Gilroy’s dark and creepy “Nightcrawler.”

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) added to the industry mix Monday morning with a list of 10 nominees to keep the awards season grist mill churning. "Gone Girl" popped up again, and it shouldn't be a surprise. It's one of the year's biggest hits. And speaking of hits, I had a hunch "Nightcrawler" would find a place after becoming such a well-liked, profitable success. There it sits. The question for both of these films is whether this on-going industry/guild love ends up translating to Oscar recognition. After the "Dragon Tattoo" rush a few years ago, I'm pretty much wait-and-see on stuff like this. Absent from the list was anything out of the Marvel Studios comic book factory, notable as both "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" were both on the top tier of box office earners in 2014. The former currently maintains the throne, though it...

The Producers Guild of America (PGA) have announced their film and television nominations for the 26th Annual Producers Guild Awards, with winners set to be announced on January 24 and they couldn't have come at a better time... for me at least. I have been spending the last couple of days working on my 2015 Oscar predictions, finally adding predictions for the categories I had not yet set live and putting final touches on those I've had live since March of last year. The Oscar nomination ballots close this coming Thursday, January 8 and you better believe I'm looking at this list to get a better idea of what the industry is thinking. Overall, there aren't any real surprises, though one film continues to make a strong big for a nomination, that being Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler, which has continued to perform well in the precursor nominations. We also see a nomination for...

The Producers Guild of America announced Monday its list of film and television nominees for its 2014 awards, and the list is as notable for its omissions as it is for its selections.
Among the films in the running for the top prize -- known formally as the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures -- are "American Sniper," "Birdman," "Boyhood," "Foxcatcher," "Gone Girl," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Imitation Game," "Nightcrawler," "The Theory of Everything," and "Whiplash."
But it's the films that were left off the list that had awards season prognosticators in a tizzy Monday. "Selma," "Unbroken," and "Into the Woods" all failed to score nominations, leading some to wonder if those movies' Oscar chances have dimmed significantly.
On the television front, "American Horror Story: Freak Show," "Fargo," "The Normal Heart," "The Roosevelts: An Intimate History," and "Sherlock" all scored nominations in the long-form television category.

The American Cinema Editors have taken the time when most of us are still enjoying a little bit of downtime before truly getting back into the swing of things this new year to announce the film and television nominees for the 65th Annual Ace Eddie Awards. Among the nominees are a couple of personal favorites in Whiplash (Tom Cross) and The Imitation Game (William Goldbenbrrg). I also think something must be said for Boyhood, though editing a film over the course of 12 years doesn't really leave much wiggle room. You're essentially editing 12 short films because once you're a year removed... you're a year removed. There are six nominees in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category as a result of a tie providing for one additional nominee for the second time ever. Among the comedy/musical nominees I would like to believe The Grand Budapest Hotel (Barney Pilling) would be the front-runner,...

If you were looking for things to be shaken up a little bit in this year's Oscar race, the American Cinema Editors (Ace) offered a slight jolt Friday with the organization's 65th annual list of nominees for film editing. And if you were wondering if "Nightcrawler" might make a serious play on the circuit, well… I will say I was wondering that. So much so that I had a piece prepped focusing on its potential before today's announcement, which included the film in a dramatic feature category that featured a tie for the first time ever. (The animated field saw a tie yielding four nominees in 2012, while "Babel" and "The Departed" actually tied for the dramatic win in 2006, but there hasn't been a tie leading to an extra nominee in the dramatic or comedy/musical categories before.) Powerhouse Oscar players "Boyhood" and "The Imitation Game" unsurprisingly joined the party, and ditto Sundance hit "Whiplash.

The son of Edward Herrmann says the "Gilmore Girls" star and Tony Award-winner has died.
Rory Herrmann said that his father died Wednesday in a New York City hospital where he was being treated for brain cancer. Edward Herrmann was 71.
The towering, 6-foot-5 actor with the melodious voice made his mark on stage, on screen and as the narrator of a number of documentaries.
He also provided the voice for Franklin D. Roosevelt in Ken Burns' documentary series "The Roosevelts: An Intimate History," which aired on PBS earlier this year, and also played Roosevelt in 1982's Annie.

Edward Herrmann, an Emmy-winning character actor best known for his seven-season run on Gilmore Girls and his long run as the voice of the History Channel, died today at a New York hospital where he was being treated for brain cancer. He was 71. The actor’s manager, Robbie Kass, told Deadline Herrmann died a year after being diagnosed with a Stage 4 glioblastoma brain tumor. “Besides being an accomplished actor, Ed was also a true gentleman and a scholar, as well as being an incredibly kind and decent man,” Kass said. “He will be sorely missed.”
Herrmann worked in TV and films for more than 40 years, racking up more than 120 credits. The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

On the night of Sept. 14, some Americans expressed their patriotism by cheering as the Chicago Bears mauled the San Francisco 49ers. More refined types took in the first episode of Ken Burns’ The Roosevelts: An Intimate History on PBS. The classiest nationalists of all forewent TV entirely, choosing instead to read the Constitution by candlelight while listening to the collected works of John Philip Sousa and supping on a freshly roasted bald eagle.
But those of us who really know what these United States are all about spent the evening watching the unique ridiculosity that is the Miss America pageant on ABC.

“It’s Shakespeare,” historian George Will says in the opening minutes of The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, “to have a single family in which human flaws and virtues are on such vivid display—and the constant struggle between those vices and those virtues to try to do good and fulfill one’s duty.”
In his new PBS series, Ken Burns doesn’t need to embellish history to evoke Shakespeare—only poetically document it. The Roosevelts, then, is not just a fascinating account of one of the most sociopolitically influential families in U.S. history—but a testament to the truth...

It is no small irony that a new film by Ken Burns, the director who has done more than any other to infuse life into the past, gets treated, by some, like an already-ossified product upon release. Whereas so much buzz surrounds the latest film festival darling — I haven’t seen it yet, but I’m hearing (and believing) that Joshua Oppenheimer’s "The Look of Silence" may be the greatest documentary ever — many of us give the latest work by Burns the same attention as the year’s edition of the Old Farmer’s Almanac. Nothing could be more wrong. And it has to stop, starting with his new seven-part series, "The Roosevelts: An Intimate History," which premieres this month. Not that any tears need be shed for Burns. He’s been able to make more films his way, to a wider audience, about his chosen subjects than any other documentary director.
