The 10 Things I Hate About You cast probably didn’t know it then, but the actors in the 1999 teen rom-com would get their breakout role. In the 25 years since its release, 10 Things I Hate About You has become a cult classic and a career highlight for its actors.
On the surface, 10 Things I Hate About You doesn’t sound like a recipe for success. A William Shakespeare play reworked into a teen comedy featuring a cast of mostly unknown actors? Critics didn’t fall head over heels for it in 1999, but the movie’s appeal has grown over time and attracted new generations of fans (even if sequel plans failed). And if the 10 Things I Hate About You cast was unknown then, now there is no mistaking the talent of stars like Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Exclusive: Annette Bening, who just received her fifth Oscar nomination last week for her portrayal of champion swimmer Diana Nyad in Nyad, has been named as the inaugural recipient of the Santa Barbara Film Festival’s Arlington Award.
The Arlington represents the first new award the festival has created in more than two decades and is named for the historic venue where all the fest’s annual tributes timed to Oscar season take place. It will be presented on Friday, February 16, 2024 at the theater, preceded by an in-person conversation I will be moderating covering her entire career.
“This is the first award added to our slate in 20 years. It is made to honor an artist who is greatly admired and who has demonstrated an incomparable commitment to film and its craft. Ms. Bening has not only displayed all of those qualities, but is considered by us to be a friend of the film festival.

Heather Graham is looking back on her own Hollywood legacy. The “Suitable Flesh” star recently told IndieWire that 1999 meta comedy “Bowfinger” is one of the films she’s “proudest” of starring in. “That’s one of the movies I’m proudest about being in,” Graham said. “I’m so proud and so grateful to be in that movie.”
Graham’s co-star Steve Martin wrote the film, which follows an indie film producer (played by Martin himself) who is looking to helm his big break. Graham portrays an aspiring actress who uses her sexuality to ascend Hollywood’s male-dominated power structures; Eddie Murphy and Christine Baranski co-star. Frank Oz directed.
“Bowfinger” came out two years after Graham’s breakout “Boogie Nights” role. The “Chosen Family” writer-director additionally told IndieWire that the sexist themes parodied by “Bowfinger” are still present in Hollywood today.

Heather Graham may have a legendary decades-long career in Hollywood, but she’s never done horror…or rather, never shed her skin completely for a project quite like “Suitable Flesh.”
In the film, Graham plays psychiatrist Elizabeth Derby, who becomes obsessed with a handsome younger patient (Judah Lewis) who is suffering from extreme personality disorder. Yet Elizabeth soon realizes there is a dark occult danger within his presence, and after consummating their relationship, she too becomes possessed by an otherworldly spirit.
Turns out, Elizabeth Derby was in fact originally written as a man, and it was director Joe Lynch’s decision to flip the gender of the lead star.
“Just to get to play sort of like that powerful male role as a woman, you never usually get to play one where you’re like the ultimate villain that can’t die. It’s just like a something I’ve...

Verdi Productions, run by Chad A. Verdi, Paul Luba, Chad Verdi, Jr.
and Michelle Verdi, plans to release three films in 2024 that were previously put on hold since actors were unable to promote work during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
“Workers in the film industry are getting financially destroyed by these strikes, whether it’s actors, writers, directors or crew. Most of these individuals were already working multiple jobs to get by,” Verdi said in a statement. “This widespread production shutdown didn’t hurt the top 1% in the industry but ruined many people who work week-to-week and paycheck-to-paycheck. It’s very unfortunate to see. Let’s get our union members a fair deal so that they can get back to doing what they love.”
In partnership with Vmi Worldwide, Verdi Productions will release “Junction” in January. The film follows the modern-day opioid crisis through three different viewpoints: the CEO of a pharmaceutical company,...
