Alyla Browne may only be 14 years old, but in the short time she’s been acting she’s somehow managed to assemble one of the most ridiculously star-studded on-screen family trees.
In Hulu’s “Nine Perfect Strangers,” she played Nicole Kidman’s daughter. In Amazon Studio’s “The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart,” she was Sigourney Weaver’s granddaughter. Meanwhile, in George’s Miller’s fantasy “Three Thousand Years of Longing,” she appeared as a young Tilda Swinton.
But the fast-rising Australian is about to top all of that. In “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” she plays the Imperator Furiosa as a child, meaning she’s not just the young Anya Taylor-Joy, but the young Charlize Theron as well.
“It’s absolutely insane,” notes the teen, now juggling her studies with her first trip to Cannes for the world premiere of the one of the year’s most highly anticipated films.

A scene from ‘Sting’ (Photo Courtesy of Well Go USA Entertainment)
From Arachnophobia to Itsy Bitsy, from Tarantula to Abyssal Spider, killer spider movies have always been in style. But there’s something special about the newest eight-legged offering, Sting. Sting is everything that’s amazing about creature features.
Sting is about a young girl named Charlotte (Alyla Browne from the unfortunate Children of the Corn remake) who spends her time drawing comics and creeping into her neighbors’ apartments by crawling through the apartment building’s air ducts. One day while doing the latter, she comes across a cute little spider which she takes home and names Sting – not after the rock star or the wrestler, but after the short sword in The Hobbit. Yes, Charlotte is a dork.
But Sting isn’t a normal, run-of-the-mill spider. It’s an alien spider that crashed on Earth in a meteorite. First,...

Sting is the new film from Australian writer/director Kiah Roache-Turner, the man behind the Mad Max meets Dawn of the Dead films Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead and its sequel Wyrmwood: Apocalypse as well as the over-the-top ghost hunting film Nekrotronic. Plot: A 12-year-old girl decides to keep a spider as a pet, not aware that the eight-legged creature is not of this world. The more it eats, the more it grows, and soon a giant space arachnid is running loose in an apartment building, snacking on the residents.
Review: Filmmaker Kiah Roache-Turner is best known for his wild and crazy zombie movies Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead and Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, which blended inspiration from Mad Max and Dawn of the Dead to tell the story of a unique zombie outbreak where the living dead have flammable blood and exhale methane. I enjoyed both of those movies, and though I haven’t seen Roache-Turner’s action comedy Nekrotronic yet, it sounds like it’s pretty much in line with the tone of the Wyrmwood flicks, as it tells the story of “a man who discovers that he is part of a...

Kiah Roache-Turner is slowly making his way through the food chain, folks. Moving on from all manner of undead creatures (Two Wyrmwood films and Nekrotronic) one of our favorite Australian directors has moved into the natural world. Their latest creature horror, the crap-your-pants-scary spider movie Sting, is due out from Well Go USA in April. I know from quick messaging with Kiah recently about Sting that he's been working on pre-production for his next film, Beast of War, a WWII Shark Thriller (two thirds of the way through what I'm now calling their Australian Food Chain Trilogy). Today Variety has word that it has pre-sold to Signature Entertainment for the U.K. and Ireland, and Well Go again for North America. Well Go knows...

Kiah Roache Turner came to our attention with the bloody good Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead (2014), then got really wild with Nekrotronic (2018), as well as the sequel Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, now turns his dastardly attention to a humble family pet. As you might imagine, however, Sting is not just about any family pet, as the official synopsis reveals: "Sting spins a web of thrilling terror when 12-year-old Charlotte's pet spider rapidly transforms into a giant flesh-eating monster, forcing the young girl to fight for her family's survival." Ryan Corr, Alyla Browne, Penelope Mitchell, Robyn Nevin, Noni Hazelhurst, Silvia Colloca, Danny Kim, and Jermaine Fowler star. Two weeks ago, it was announced that Wyrmwood Road of the Dead and Wyrmwood: Apocalypse director Kiah Roache-Turner is gearing up to make a World War II-set shark thriller called Beast of War. Roache-Turner is reuniting with Cornerstone, the company that’s handling worldwide sales and distribution for his spider-themed horror film Sting, on this new project, and Cornerstone is currently presenting Beast of War to potential buyers at the upcoming American Film Market. While the market is going on, Roache-Turner took a moment to talk to The Hollywood Reporter about the “unashamedly fun” shark film he’s gearing up to make.
The script has the following synopsis: 1942. A warship carries hundreds of Australian soldiers across the Timor Sea to the frontline of WW2. Suddenly, Japanese fighter jets scream out of the sky, and within minutes the ocean becomes a hell of steel, fire, oil, and blood. With the vessel destroyed,...

Just weeks before he passed away, the legendary George A. Romero let it be known that he was seeking funding for a project called George A. Romero Presents: Road of the Dead, a film that would be directed by stunt coordinator Matt Birman, who served as second unit director on Romero’s Land of the Dead, Diary of the Dead, and Survival of the Dead. Five years have gone by and this project still hasn’t gotten off the ground, as Romero’s passing understandably halted any momentum it had. With the new episode of our video series Wtf Happened to This Unmade Horror Movie (formerly known as The Horror Movie That Almost Was), we’re looking into what might have been if Road of the Dead had been made. Hopefully it will be made someday.

It’s been a little over seven years since Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead was unleashed onto the world, and now co-writer/director Kiah Roache-Turner is back with a follow-up, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, that expands on all the zombie-fueled (quite literally in this case) madness from the first movie, and delivers up even more carnage and chaos in the sequel as well. For Apocalypse, Roache-Turner reteamed with three of the co-stars from Road of the Dead—Bianca Bradey, Luke McKenzie and Jay Gallagher—and explores the post-apocalyptic world where zombies still pose a huge threat to humanity, but also can be helpful all the same.
But does the usefulness of the zombies come with a hefty price tag attached? There’s only one way to find out—check out Wyrmwood: Apocalypse for yourself once it arrives on digital platforms this Thursday, April 14th, courtesy of XYZ Films.

Rhys lives in the zombie-infested wasteland. His job is to capture civilians and deliver them to what's left of the military. When Rhys captures a half-zombie-half-human named Grace, he comes to believe she is the key to ending the apocalypse. Well, howdy, this came out of nowhere. A while ago we had a look at Wyrmwood: Apocalypse, the sequel to the breakout zombie hit Wyrmwood from from Kiah Roache-Turner and Tristan Roache-Turner. Then we said things like, holy shit, they did it again, or, it is possible to make something that tops the original. Honestly it was a while ago and we may have been a little drunk on the power of early access at the time. Wyrmwood: Apocalypse went on to have...

I was a huge fan of 2014s Australian zombie gorefest Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead and so I have spent the intervening years awaiting the long-gestating sequel with bated breath… and now, finally, it’s here. Was it worth the wait?
Er… F*ck yes!
Picking up just after where the first film left off, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse shows us what happens to Brooke when she goes full-on zombie. At the same time starting a new story which follows Rhys ((Luke McKenzie), the twin of one the characters from the original film, whose running a weird zombie experiment “camp” where he captures and runs tests on the undead – using them to power his facility, to practice boxing with, you know, the usual; all the while looking for signs of a cure.

2014’s Wyrmwood: Road Of The Dead was one of those quirky little comedy horror movies which could easily have gone horribly wrong but which just happened to go horribly right thanks to the chemistry between its cast-members and its anarchic sense of fun. This long-awaited sequel does its best to use the same formula, but in its efforts to recapture past glory it loses the spontaneity which was vital to making that formula work.
Jay Gallagher is back as beleaguered hero Barry, who now lives alone in a nicely designed little compound whose electricity is supplied by zombie farts. The living dead cluster all around his wire fence, moaning and uselessly trying to get inside it, which provides him with a seemingly unlimited resource. Every now and then he captures one and trades it to his local mad scientist, who is supposedly working on a cure. He’s not exactly living the.

With Greater Sydney facing another two weeks in lockdown, the growing Covid-19 threat has led to mixed reactions regarding productions in the state as movements become more constricted.
More than 900 people have been infected in Nsw since the Bondi cluster was discovered last month.
The outbreak has led Victoria – which is due to begin a snap five-day lockdown of its own from midnight on Thursday – to close its border with Nsw and Act as of this week, with Queensland also extended border restrictions to all of Greater Sydney, including the Central Coast, Blue Mountains, Wollongong, and Shellharbour.
Meanwhile, Western Australia has reinstated border restrictions with Queensland and Nsw, while South Australia has closed its border with Nsw, the Act, and some parts of Queensland. Tasmania remains closed to people from greater Sydney.
The rise of the Delta strain is another blow to productions that have already had to navigate the unpredictable nature of the pandemic.

Richard Kadrey, author of the fantasy book series “Sandman Slim,” has written an original screenplay called “Dark West” that will be adapted into a movie by “Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead” writer-director Kiah Roache-Turner.
Chris Goldberg’s Winterlight Pictures has optioned “Dark West” and set Roache-Turner to write the next draft of the script. Roache-Turner is eyeing to direct the film in his native Australia. Kadrey is also working on turning “Dark West” into a graphic novel.
“Dark West” is a vampire revenge thriller set on the highways of Texas that follows two car thieves who accidentally T-bone a pair of vampires in the middle of the night. The story is in the vein of the classic ’80s horror films “The Hitcher” and Kathryn Bigelow’s “Near Dark.”
The idea for “Dark West” came about after Kadrey’s “Sandman Slim” book series was optioned by Goldberg in his role as...
