Update to a Classic
Accurate, if brief, history of the holiday. This special is an update of 1997-2009 special, The Haunted History of Halloween (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0325530/combined). The primary changes in this new version include contemporary graphics/special effects, as well as the loss of History Channel Holiday Narrator, Harry Smith. The Real Story of Halloween differs from its predecessor by detailing the evolution of the holiday since the release of The Haunted History of Halloween in 1997, specifically the premium costume/prop industry and the tendency of "GenX" parents to include themselves in festivities formally reserved for children. Special attention is given to the modern notion that neighborhood trick-or-treating is no longer safe, as well as the overabundance of sexy women's costumes on the market.
All-in-all, a fun update to the original special, though some of the twenty first century additions to the holiday make me nostalgic for the "innocence" of 1997. Fortunately, I own The Haunted History of Halloween on DVD.
