When Doug Liman's sci-fi actioner "Edge of Tomorrow" was released in 2014, it opened to a mere $28.7 million at the domestic box office. This was considered a minor scandal at the time, as the film was roundly praised by critics for its slick wartime combat sequences, clever time-loop premise, and charismatic leading performances from stars Emily Blunt and Tom Cruise. Many also saw "Edge of Tomorrow" as an antidote to the ascendant tide of Marvel movies that had, by then, completely infiltrated the cinema marketplace. Recall that 2014 was the year of "Guardians of the Galaxy" and "Captain America: The Winter Solider," two wildly popular films that, perhaps because of their popularity, invited early invitations of the phrase "Marvel fatigue."
"Edge of Tomorrow" was often touted as proof that great, original films — that is: not driven by marketable I.P. — were still being made. Its paltry opening was held up as...

Fans have certainly been treated to a generous dose of Glen Powell on screen in recent years. However, unlike his co-star Sydney Sweeney, Powell seems to maintain a discerning approach despite his frequent film appearances. Notably, he deliberately avoids superhero films, as hinted at in a recent interview.

This article contains spoilers for Hit Man.
“People are disappointed when they learn that hit men don’t really exist,” explains Gary Johnson. That might be a surprising statement given that it occurs early on in a movie called Hit Man. Throughout the film, Gary (Glen Powell) dons different disguises to meet with people who want to pay him money (or video games or boats) to kill people. But then again, it’s all a ruse, a police sting operation that mild-mannered teacher Gary does as a side gig.
As Gary explains, his job is to become the type of hitman that potential criminals imagine exists, so that he can embody that look and lure them into a state of safety. As smart as Gary certainly is, he doesn’t create these identities out of nothing. Rather he’s riffing on hired killers from pop culture history, which gives Powell...

Just last month, we learned that Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Ed Harris (The Truman Show) had signed on to star in the revenge thriller Huntington for A24 and writer/director John Patton Ford. Now Huntington has gone into production, and Deadline has revealed that the cast also includes Jessica Henwick (Glass Onion), Topher Grace (That 70s Show), Zach Woods (Silicon Valley), and Raff Law (Masters of the Air). Details on the characters they’ll be playing have not been revealed.
Drawing inspiration from the 1949 crime comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets, Huntington will see Powell taking on the role of Becket Redfellow, the heir to a multi-billion-dollar fortune who will stop at nothing to get what he deserves… Or what he thinks he deserves. One of the most talked-about action flicks of this year, Richard Linklater’s Hit Man, deserves all the hype it’s getting. Loosely based on a 2001 article by Skip Hollandsworth, the film is about Gary Johnson, a Texas man who was famous for his undercover persona as a fake hitman. Linklater’s latest movie proves that he’s much more than the Before trilogy, and this movie is also a wake-up call for Hollywood in many ways. It’s not necessary to play it safe when you’ve got a solid script on your hands, and that’s what makes a movie click with the audience. In this article, we’re talking about the ensemble cast and the characters they play in this Netflix movie.

Bad Boys: Ride or Die is a film about retribution and redemption. Not just on screen, but in execution. After their last attempt at a blockbuster was shelved in the name of a tax loophole, directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah seem intent on unleashing all their pent-up energy, whether they’re selling us Batgirls or Bad Boys. Even if it bears the baggage of a meta redemption arc for its star, Ride or Die brings enough stylistic gusto to its action in the absence of Michael Bay but has a hard time justifying most other decisions, which adopt the tedium rampant in modern blockbuster filmmaking.
The infusion of Fast & Furious DNA into Bad Boys seemed inevitable by the third entry. Who could blame a long-dormant action franchise for taking its cues from one of the most prevalent (and successful) film series in the intervening 17 years? In the case of Ride or Die,...

One major complaint against Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds, who are currently some of the biggest names in Hollywood, is they play it too safe with their movies. Despite having starred in dramas early in their career, since their rise to fame in Hollywood, both actors have limited themselves in a bubble and are known for playing themselves in most movies.
But things couldn’t be more different with Tom Cruise, arguably the biggest movie star on the planet, and one of the major recipes behind it is the actor’s willingness to learn.

If you weren’t on board the Glen Powell train after Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, his latest film Hit Man is sure to get you on board. Loosely based on the real-life of Gary Johnson, the Netflix film follows the story of a part-time professor and a part-time pretend hit man for the police, but his life completely changes when a beautiful woman comes to him to have her husband killed.
Don’t make assumptions about the film’s genre based on its name because Hit Man isn’t an action or a crime film, but it is much more of a romantic comedy than a crime thriller. Directed by Richard Linklater, who also co-wrote the screenplay with star Powell, Hit Man has a way of making its deeply problematic romantic relationship seem charming and sexy, and while the brilliant performances by Powell and...

The movie, which is an all-time action classic, introduced us to a number of characters destined to become fan-favorites. Actor Glen Powell was propelled to new heights of stardom when he starred as Hangman in Top Gun: Maverick. The Tom Cruise-starrer was the highest-grossing film of 2022 and was even nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars. Powell’s role as an arrogant yet principled Navy pilot received positive responses from fans and critics alike.
Though Powell portrayed Hangman to perfection, that was not the first role he auditioned for. The actor reportedly first hoped to star as Rooster, the role that eventually went to Miles Teller. However, after being rejected from the role and not being impressed with Hangman on the page, Powell was convinced by Cruise to take the character.

This peaceful nature film contemplates the creatures and critters that live in and around a 200-year-old oak, including some Top Gun-esque aerial cinematography
Entirely devoid of dialogue (unless a bit of Dean Martin on the soundtrack counts), this pleasant nature film observes the seasons passing for 18 months on, around and even underneath a 210-year-old oak tree in Sologne in central France. Technically, some would argue this is not exactly a documentary because some of the sequences are staged or composed of shots taken at totally different times, but scientific accuracy and cinematic authenticity aren’t really the point; this isn’t didactic film-making in the David Attenborough or even March of the Penguins tradition, crafted to drop a bit of natural history knowledge on the viewer. That said, if you sit through the end credits, you’ll at least learn some of the featured creatures’ Latin and French names,...
