Veteran director Christopher Nolan is known for his iconic films like Interstellar, Inception, and, Oppenheimer. With some iconic ideas and mind-bending scripts that make the twisted world of time, space, and, people, Nolan is one of a kind director for the world.

Filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, and Christopher Nolan are known for pushing the boundaries in blockbuster filmmaking as they bring in original ideas and mount them on a large scale. While the directors have grown to be critical favorites, they also seem to have won the box office race with their original films.
Among these legends, Christopher Nolan seems to have gained the top spot in one category. With four of his original films grossing over $500 million at the box office, Nolan beat Spielberg and Roland Emmerich to gain the top spot. The Oscar-winner is the only filmmaker to have achieved this feat with movies that are not comic adaptations, reboots, or sequels.

Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis garnered a well-deserved standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival. Now, IMAX has pledged its support to the film for exclusive screening, irrespective of the distributor it aligns with. This announcement stands as monumental news within the industry, signaling a major boost for cinematic ventures.

Paramount Global may be a direct competitor, but NBCUniversal Studio group chairman and chief content officer Donna Langley will be disappointed if the media giant goes away.
“It’s sad,” Langley said at the Kering Women in Motion talk at the Cannes Film Festival, noting that a sale of Paramount means there will be fewer Hollywood studios. “These companies have been great and I’m a big believer in this competitive landscape — kind of ‘all boats will rise. There’s enough to go around.’ I like having healthy competitors; it’s much more fun and interesting and it’s just best for the business.”
Paramount has been entertaining offers in recent months, with companies like Skydance and Sony circling the studio. Langley is hopeful that the deal will be finished by the end of the year. “It’s enough already reading about this,” she said. “No one really knows what’s happening.

Watching movies on the big screen is an indulgence these days. Everyone prefers sitting in their homes, opening Netflix or Prime or any other streaming site, and watching whatever they feel like. But seems like viewers will have to indulge a little more than usual if they want to experience movies and not just watch them. Just ask Christopher Nolan, and he can tell you all about the IMAX experience.

And now, others are looking to emulate the same in their movie-making. In their 2025 slate, IMAX will be releasing no less than 14 movies in their “filmed for IMAX” format. My favorite scene in the hilarious new film “The Fall Guy” is the one where Emily Blunt (recent Best Supporting Actress Oscar nominee for “Oppenheimer”) belts out the Phil Collins classic “Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now)” as Ryan Gosling (recent Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominee for “Barbie”) finds himself in a particularly dramatic — and dangerous — sequence of events.
As Blunt sang with all her heart, I couldn’t help but think of how perfect the timing was.
Forty years ago this very month, the famous power ballad had just completed a three-week reign on top of the Billboard Hot 100. “Against All Odds” was the title song from the romantic thriller starring Jeff Bridges, Rachel Ward and James Woods. The Taylor Hackford-directed movie was met with solid reviews and healthy ticket sales. But its most notable success was Collins’s song, which quickly took the Billboard chart by storm.

“Jaws” in 1975 is remembered as the movie that birthed the summer global blockbuster; its many children include “Star Wars,” Raiders of the Lost Ark,” “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial,” “Top Gun,” “Ghostbusters,” “Ghost,” “Twister,” “The Lion King,” “Independence Day,” “Speed,” and “Men in Black.” Today, that bloodline is threatened with extinction.
On the surface, that seems ridiculous — summer box office is still defined by blockbusters — but today that means sequels. It’s become exceedingly rare for studios to invest over $100 million in a summer movie with an original screenplay that’s not already part of a franchise. That’s what makes Paramount Pictures’ $110 million “If” such an outlier.
Still, being that exception also hands writer-director John Krasinski a double-edged sword. Those original blockbusters — all released between 1975-1999 — ended up with domestic gross totals, in 2024 ticket price terms, of over $400 million. Consensus on opening weekend for “If” has been around $40 million,...

It's not that theaters are in danger of going away in the immediate future, but the movie business is in a bit of a crisis. Thanks to the pandemic, the box office has struggled to get back to the level of ticket sales the industry had become accustomed to. The SAG and WGA strikes last year have put us in a situation where the 2024 box office is in rough shape thus far, with the summer now burdened by unreasonable expectations. So, what can be done? One Hollywood executive believes he has the answer: Make the experience of going to the movies cheaper.
Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman recently sat down to speak with Deadline. As the head of one of Hollywood's biggest studios -- one that doesn't have a streaming service and is very reliant on box office -- he has a good vantage point to comment on these matters.

Before "Oppenheimer" fever swept the globe, what was actor Cillian Murphy's best and most recognizable role? Some would point to the ever-popular "Peaky Blinders" and his delightfully Brummie performance as Tommy Shelby. Anyone who offered up his casting as a space-faring physicist in Danny Boyle's "Sunshine" or even his villainous turn in Wes Craven's "Red Eye" would earn my eternal respect. But for many of us, the quintessential zombie flick "28 Days Later" best showed off what Murphy had to offer back in 2002. With plans already in motion for a return visit to that post-apocalyptic world in the sequel "28 Years Later," we've waited with bated breath to see if Murphy himself would reprise his role.
That wait is now over. The talented actor is officially coming back for "28 Years Later," as confirmed by Sony Motion Pictures Group head honcho Tom Rothman in an interview with Deadline.

IMAX reveals a sizeable list of films coming to the format in 2025: here’s what to expect and when to expect it.
When it was reported around this time last year that Tom Cruise was engaged in a rather ‘spirited’ series of conversations with studio executives regarding Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning's IMAX allocation, it ushered into the foreground a fact that had steadily been emerging over the last few years.
The IMAX technology (and ticket price uplift that accompanies it) has established itself as something of a kingmaker in Hollywood. Studios that can secure the longest IMAX runs for their films can gain a much-needed commercial edge over their rivals.
Such was the case with Dead Reckoning, as the film’s brief IMAX window was surely a factor in it being beaten at the box office by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, a movie mostly featuring people in rooms talking.

While 3D cinema had come and gone in popularity, one premium screen that was made popular by Christopher Nolan’s attempt to use the technology is IMAX. Originally, the special cameras and format were meant for nature & science documentaries. The picture quality was unlike any that was seen before in order to capture the immense detail in every facet of the natural life on Earth. Then, Nolan had taken to using it for his blockbuster sequel, The Dark Knight, and crews of camera operators and projectionists would have to learn to utilize the practice for general audience movies.
The format has since taken off and has become a more luxurious and immersive way to watch a movie. This is especially if the film were a special effects-laden narrative that aims to take you on a journey onto a bigger plane. The practice has become more and more common in Hollywood with their big movies,...

Following the global success of Oppenheimer and Dune: Part Two, Imax is looking forward to its biggest ever “filmed for Imax” slate in 2025, including at least 14 titles currently shooting with Imax film or Imax-certified digital cameras, which are due for release next year.
The company said today that the 2025 slate more than doubles any previous year in its history, as Hollywood and overseas filmmakers and studios increasingly create for its platform. (Scroll down for the full 2025 roster.)
The increase in Imax-focused production follows a run of historic box office success for films shot with its proprietary cameras despite its nearly 1,700 commercial locations accounting for less than 1% of total screens worldwide.
Recent highlights include over 20% of the global box office ($190M+) on Universal’s Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan shot the Oscar winner entirely with Imax film cameras. It’s the fifth highest grossing Imax movie of all time.

One Cannes ritual is IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond’s annual press lunch. IMAX is thriving in the global marketplace, with more than 1,700 screens in 90 countries, as audiences continue to recognize and embrace the global brand for giant film and digital cameras and big-screen formats. Helfand announced the company’s upcoming 2025 filmed for IMAX slate (below) while at Cannes, which he believes will break records for the company. Thanks to IMAX believer Chris Nolan‘s global blockbuster “Oppenheimer,” IMAX performed at peak capacity with over $1 billion in revenue in 2023, matching the company’s 2019 pre-pandemic record.
IMAX delivered 20% of the global box office for “Oppenheimer” — shot entirely with IMAX film cameras — and more than $190 million worldwide, making it the fifth highest grossing IMAX film of all time. IMAX also delivered 21% of the global box office for “Dune: Part Two” — shot entirely with IMAX-certified digital cameras — and over $145 million worldwide, making it the seventh highest.

Emily Blunt doesn’t want any mathematical equation to dictate what films get made.
The “Fall Guy” actress said during an interview with Vanity Fair Italy that she hates the “fucking word” algorithm because it does not encompass the “art” form of cinema.
“Some new things frustrate me: algorithms, for example,” Blunt said. “I hate that fucking word, excuse the expletive! How can it be associated with art and content? How can we let it determine what will be successful and what will not?”
Blunt pointed to Best Picture winner “Oppenheimer” as a film that on paper wouldn’t seem like a box office blockbuster.
“Let me explain with an example,” she said. “I was in a three-hour film about a physicist, which had the that impact it had – the algorithms probably wouldn’t have grasped it. My hope is that ‘Oppenheimer’ and similar projects are not considered anomalies, that...

We've been hearing for years about the death of DVD and Blu-ray. The physical media market is not what it once was, with hardcore collectors driving new business and impressive new 4K releases of classics and new movies aimed at a small but loyal section of consumers. Sales of DVD and Blu-ray discs were down 25% in 2023, even though home entertainment -- driven in large part by VOD -- was up 16.8% to $43 billion. Heck, even Disney is shutting down the Disney Movie Club this year while handing its physical media business to Sony. But the death of DVD has been greatly exaggerated, at least according to Oscar-winning "Dances With Wolves" director Kevin Costner.

Nearly a decade ago, Oscar-winning cinematographer Greig Fraser was hanging out at one of Roger and James Deakins’ famous barbecues when he was introduced to a French-Canadian man he didn’t immediately recognize. But as soon as he put a face to the name “Denis Villeneuve,” he instantly called to mind two of the filmmaker’s critically acclaimed Canadian films, Polytechnique (2009) and Incendies (2010), as well as his American debut, Prisoners (2013), that he shot with the co-host of that day’s festivities, Roger Deakins. So Fraser and Villeneuve got to know each other that day, before going their separate ways for a few years.
During the intervening time period, Fraser photographed a handful of projects including the first Star Wars spinoff film, Rogue One (2016), as well as the first live-action Star Wars series in The Mandalorian. He’s twisted time. He’s reinvented Batman. He’s conquered the box office multiple times over. And he’s always done it entirely his own way. There’s nobody out there like Christopher Nolan – a game-changing filmmaker who makes masterpieces like nobody’s business, deploying cerebral cinematic craft to create big-impact blockbusters. Over the last 25 years, he’s proven himself as one of the all-time greats – and so, in the wake of his landmark Oscar wins for Oppenheimer, Empire presents the ultimate tribute: a one-off collector’s edition dedicated to a director like no other.

Bradley Cooper is one of the most snubbed actors in the history of Oscars, and even though he has been nominated for twelve Academy Awards, the win always seems to slip through his fingers. His recent work, Maestro, earned three nominations, but the actor still went home empty-handed.
Bradley Cooper in Maestro
After the awarding event, Cooper made a surprise cameo in ABC’s Abbott Elementary as himself. The news is that his two-minute appearance in the show has been submitted for Emmy’s consideration.
Bradley Cooper’s Cameo In Abbott Elementary Vies For Emmy Awards
Fans will never forget how Bradley Cooper roasted himself in his cameo appearance in Abbott Elementary. The actor opened the scene with the line, “Whenever I’m in Philly, you know the deli across the street? That’s my first stop. My dad used to always take me there. They have the best hoagies in the city.

It feels like you can’t spend more than two minutes on the internet without coming across some form of the dreaded “sex scene discourse.”
For those blissfully unfamiliar with the concept, it’s basically the debate over whether there’s too much sex in TV and movies these days. The discourse — which largely lives online and tends to skew younger — spans everything from the supposedly gratuitous amount of “unnecessary” sex scenes in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer (there are just two) to the recycled “Euphoria should have been set in college” take that goes viral on Twitter every other month to teens unintentionally advocating for the reinstatement of the Hays Code.

When prosthetic makeup designer Vincent Van Dyke first met with Robert Downey Jr., the two men somewhat immediately hit it off. And good thing, too, since just a couple of days later, Van Dyke heard from the producers of the HBO limited series “The Sympathizer” with the hope of signing him onto the ambitious project.
“Luckily we had that earlier meeting because we had to hit the ground running,” Van Dyke tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. “It was a quick turnaround to start creating and designing these looks, and get them in front of everyone’s eyes.”

Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was an astounding success last year in the box office and this year during the awards season. The story was gripping, with some absolutely brilliant performances, and an equally fitting director who left no stone unturned to make a cinematic masterpiece.
Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer
World War movies are sometimes a hit and miss, but this one completely knocked it out of the park. Oppenheimer was praised for its story, as well as execution, and has been a fan favorite for a while. And it looks like we will have another World War II drama in our hands soon.
Nuremberg Is a Oppenheimer and Man of Steel Crossover
Director James Vanderbilt is bringing the story of the Nuremberg trials to life, with a brilliant cast attached to the project. The movie is based on yet another book, this one being The Nazi and the Psychiatrist, Nuremberg by Jack El-Hai.

John Krasinski went from playing Jim in The Office to becoming one of the most successful actor-writer-director of this generation. After finding success with A Quiet Place franchise, which he wrote and directed himself, now Krasinski is back with the movie If. If or Imaginary Friend, is the latest movie from his bag of brilliance, which, again, the 44-year-old wrote and directed himself.
Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming in a still from If | Paramount Pictures
The movie has all the who’s who from the industry, starring Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Krasinski himself, alongside his wife, Emily Blunt, and so many others. Cailey Fleming is at the center of the story, who goes on a magical adventure to reconnect people with their imaginary friend who they have lost on their way. The movie recently released its final trailer before premier, and it is a crossover we did not know we needed.

Long before he confused the heck out of all of us with "Tenet," Christopher Nolan was producing scripts so perplexing that even veterans like Leonardo DiCaprio and Guy Pearce didn't understand them. Tom Hardy has admitted to taking a leap on the script for "Inception," which he claimed was a "bit complicated," and Nolan even confused himself by including a famous line in "The Dark Knight" that he didn't understand.
So, even if you're a Nolan fan, you're likely used to being befuddled by the director's efforts. But the man basically announced his arrival in Hollywood as a filmmaker with a penchant for the perplexing. After self-financing his first film, "Following," which contained several Nolan trademarks including a non-linear narrative, the director found himself with a modest budget for his studio debut, "Memento." Rather than dispose of any complex filmmaking techniques for this film, however, Nolan refused to dumb things down,...

Godzilla Minus One was truly a spectacle. The film has been regarded as one of the most successful films of the Godzilla film series, and its director, Takashi Yamazaki, can be thanked for it. The film has received a lot of critical acclaim for many different reasons. One of its most prominent assets is its visual effects, impressively winning the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

The film also made a lot of money during its box office release, almost going above $116 million worldwide. Despite all its success, it would seem that Toho Studios made a huge mistake less than a year after the film’s release that will certainly affect its profit.

In an unusual move, NBCUniversal used its upfront presentation to ad buyers in New York on Monday to debut a four-minute extended first look at its forthcoming film version of Wicked.
The preview of Universal’s Thanksgiving release, which will go online later this week, elicited a warm response from the audience at Radio City Music Hall. It showed off the extensive visual effects of director Jon Chu’s adaptation of the Wizard of Oz story, including the newly conceived version of Oz, as well as the emotional interplay between the witches portrayed by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. Production began on the film at the end of 2022 but was paused last year due to the actors strike. It is set for release on November 27.

In 2002, Christopher Nolan directed a film set in a small town in Alaska where the sun doesn’t go down for days at a time. The film starred the great Al Pacino as a once again decorated but tortured Detective at full Heat level intensity, squaring off against the legendary Robin Williams in an against-type role as a creepy, cerebral murderer of a teenage girl. Danny Boyle’s new 28 Years Later movie is filming imminently, and Sony has confirmed a summer 2025 release date for the film too.
No messing around where the franchise-restarting 28 Years Later is concerned. That’d be director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, and with 28 Years Later they’re looking to start a brand new trilogy of movies.

Exclusive: A longtime passion project imagined by the late Steve McQueen has been revived.
Two decades after the iconic actor’s son Chad McQueen and family friend/Warner Bros exec Lance Sloan began development on the film Yucatan, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer has been set as the screenwriter of the project that is now in early development at Netflix, we understand. Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey remain attached as producers under their Team Downey banner.
Both Netflix and Team Downey declined to comment.
McQueen’s vision involved a story about a renegade salvage expert’s search for Mayan treasure in the Yucatan Peninsula with him taking the lead. Details regarding where Dunnet-Alcocer will take the story are under wraps. Mexican writer Dunnet-Alcocer is working fresh with McQueen’s script, which was discovered years after his 1980 death as part of a collection of notebooks he left behind in a pair of trunks.

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is a more typical summer movie season-starter than last week’s disappointing “The Fall Guy” (Universal). It’s a franchise film and it’s from Disney (which usually starts things off with a Marvel film).
It’s expected to open to over $50 million this weekend and become the first to gross over $100 million domestic. Industry sources suggest that over the summer, at least eight other releases (extending to early September) will reach this mark. A week ago, that guess would gave been 10.
The same sources pegged “The Fall Guy” as likely to gross over $125 million in the U.S./Canada. This weekend will clarify its fate, but the current trajectory suggests around $80 million. That’s a disappointment for theaters as well as Universal, which spent around $140 million to make the film before marketing.
“Apes” is one of several titles now projected in the $125-$150 million range.

Stunts have been at the forefront of cinema since the beginning. Some of the earliest directors, actors, and writers were the very best stunt performers. Think Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin, and Harold Lloyd. Their influence can be seen across the history of cinema, from bridge jumps in Smokey and the Bandit, to lorry flips in The Dark Knight, shopping centre jumps in Police Story, to jumping off cliffs in the latest Mission Impossible. Stunts are in every action movie and ingrained in the very fabric of the art form – why it’s not yet recognised by the academy is a mystery, but David Leitch and his talented cast and crew look set on solving the mystery by putting a spotlight on those stunt performers.

Marvel Studios and the Marvel Cinematic Universe isn’t what it used to be anymore. From failing movies to cringe scenes (just look at Thor: Love and Thunder), the MCU is suffering through the effects of post-Endgame clarity.

After a decade and change playing superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe sandbox, Robert Downey Jr. wants to remind everyone there's more to him than Tony Stark. In the years since permanently (?) retiring his MCU alter ego in "Avengers: Endgame," the actor has lined up an ambitious slate of projects. Between getting an Oscar for his supporting role in Christopher Nolan's Best Picture-winning "Oppenheimer" and pulling a Peter Sellers by tackling multiple colorful characters in Park Chan-wook and Don McKellar's "The Sympathizer" miniseries, it's fair to say Rdj the character actor is officially back.
As chance would have it, we're now 10 years removed from the last time Downey tried (but failed) to renew his acting bonafides with "The Judge." Directed by David Dobkin, the 2014 drama stars Downey as Hank Palmer, a big-shot lawyer from Chicago who returns to his podunk hometown in Indiana to attend his mother's funeral.

If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Emily Blunt got candid during a recent appearance on “The Howard Stern Show” (via People) about how she’s had to fake chemistry over the years with certain co-stars she just struggled to connect with on set. Blunt has acted opposite many high-profile leading men throughout her career, from Matt Damon (“The Adjustment Bureau”) to Tom Cruise (“Edge of Tomorrow”), Dwayne Johnson (“Jungle Cruise”), Ryan Gosling (“The Fall Guy”) and Cillian Murphy (“Oppenheimer”).
“Have you wanted to throw up?” Stern asked Blunt about kissing some of her male co-stars during filming. The Oscar-nominated actor responded: “Absolutely. Absolutely.”
“I wouldn’t say it’s sort of extreme loathing, but I’ve definitely not enjoyed some of it,” Blunt added.
Blunt declined to name any co-star she couldn’t generate chemistry with, but she did say: “I have had chemistry with people who… I have not had a good time working with them.
