Jeannette Charles, the Queen Elizabeth II look-alike who played the British monarch for laughs in National Lampoon’s European Vacation, in the first Naked Gun movie and in the last Austin Powers film, has died. She was 96.
Charles died Sunday at a hospice facility in Great Baddow, Essex, England, her daughter, Carol Christophi, announced. “Mum was a real character and a force of nature. She had an amazing life,” she said. “She was always respectful of the queen and adored the royal family.”
Queen Elizabeth II died in September 2022, also at age 96.
Charles spent more than four decades doubling for the head of state before she wound down her career in 2014.
“I think the first time I was recognized [as the queen] was on a trip [in 1971] to Capri in Italy, with my Italian pen friend Florence,” she recalled in a 2012 interview. “Someone shouted ‘Princess Elizabeth’ in Italian, my friend explained her majesty had...

We’ve only just got Easter out of the way, and here comes the most immersive Christmas movie of the year, an abstract but very much controlled study based in and around a festive party thrown by a very large family from Long Island, New York. Despite the specificity of the setting, however, Tyler Taormina’s third feature film is a surprisingly relatable experience, part anthropological study, part nostalgia kick, lit up (literally) like a Christmas tree in a yuletide riot of red, white and green.
It begins in a car ferrying members of the Balsano family — mother and father, brother and sister — to the home of the family’s matriarch, where four generations of Balsanos have gathered for their annual get-together. This is about as much of a set-up as you’re going to get,...

Jersey Shore viewers blasted multiple cast members after witnessing how they treated Angelina Pivarnick’s fiance, Vinny Tortorella.
Dubbed “Vinny 2.0” in the episodes and by fans, Angelina’s fiance joined her at the latest Family Vacation spot in Tucson, Arizona.
However, Angelina was already feuding with her castmate, Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola, which made things uncomfortable.
During one scene, Angelina was getting ready to join the cast for an outing, so Vinny went to hang out with her castmates, including Sammi, Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, Deena Cortese, and Paul “Pauly D” DelVecchio.
As Vinny entered the room, Sammi told her castmates she would “say something” to him about Angelina.
During a tense scene, Sammi and Jenni “JWoww” Farley made interesting comments toward their castmate’s fiance, increasing the drama.
Angelina’s fiance said he was ‘caught off guard’ by the cast’s remarks on Family Vacation

I have enjoyed watching Charlie Day in movies like Horrible Bosses and its sequel, Fist Fight, Vacation, and others. I like his screen presence and find his comedic performances to be very amusing… and yet I still haven’t gotten around to watching a single episode of his sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which is currently sixteen seasons deep. I’m going to check that show out one of these days. In the meantime, Deadline reports that Day is set to star in a murder mystery called Kill Me, and he’s being joined in the cast by Allison Williams of Get Out, M3GAN, and Girls.
Written and directed by Peter Warren (The Auteur), Kill Me will see Day taking on the role of Jimmy, who wakes up in a bathtub after having tried to kill himself. Or, at least, that’s what it looks like to his friends and family.

1985’s Fletch was directed by Michael Ritchie and written by Andrew Bergman. The film is an adaptation of the popular novels written by Gregory McDonald and brings a more comedic and dry approach to its titular character, Fletch, played by Chevy Chase. Fletch is an investigative journalist working the undercover beat as a homeless beach junkie as he tries to uncover the truth behind a kingpin-level drug ring that is looming over greater L.A. While undercover, Fletch is propositioned by a rich man called Alan Stanwick who claims to be dying of bone cancer to kill the man in his upper-class home so that his family can reap the benefits of his life insurance. In exchange, Fletch will receive $50,000 cash and a ticket out of the country.
When this movie was made, Chevy Chase was arguably at the height of his career. While he’d opened the decade with a few horrible flops,...

This article contains spoilers for Fargo season 5 episode 4.
Something festive, something spooky, something downright oogie boogie has been lurking around Fargo season 5 since its very first scene.
Flash back, if you will, to the opening moments of episode 1 “The Tragedy of the Commons.” The viewer is immediately thrust into chaos. Punches are being thrown at a meeting of the Fall Festival Planning Committee in Scandia Middle School. Look past the melee of writhing white Midwesterners towards to stage and what do you see? That’s right: crude plywood renderings of the iconic landscapes from the 1993 animated film The Nightmare Before Christmas. Later on, as Dorothy Lyon (Juno Temple) is being escorted out of the school, we see two Nightmare Before Christmas posters, confirming it as Scandia Middle School’s fall show.
Now, at the beginning of episode 4 “Insolubilia,” Fargo season 5 kicks its Nightmare Before Christmas appreciation up a notch. Not...

Family trip to Norway that falls prey to a killer gremlin isn’t silly or scary enough to provide much entertainment
You’re in Norway now. Nothing bad ever happens.” That’s an American dad reassuring his two kids, not long after they move to the Norwegian countryside to a farm he’s inherited. The plan is to convert the barn out back into a snug Airbnb rental. Trouble is, there’s a foul tempered nisse – or elf – living in the barn. So, yes, essentially this is a movie about killer garden gnomes. It’s a silly horror that’s not as good, or as bad, as you’d hoped: neither funny enough nor ever properly scary. That said, there are some cheerfully gory bits and a smattering of decent culture clash gags.

Typically, I’m not the type of comic book nerd who sits there and says, “The actors in the films must look like the comics! Waaaaahhhhhh!” But holy shit, when a filmmaker nails a casting on seemingly all fronts, like what James Gunn has done for Jimmy Olsen in “Superman: Legacy,” he deserves a commendation.

According to THR, James Gunn has brought on Skyler Gisondo to star as Jimmy Olsen in the forthcoming “Superman: Legacy.” You probably know Gisondo from roles in films such as “Booksmart” and “Vacation.” He’s also part of “The Righteous Gemstones.” He is one of the best young actors working today, who can play that “awe-shucks” kid and come off as sincere.

As the resident curmudgeonly racist, Pierce Hawthorne was an almost perfect counterpart to the rest of the gang at Greendale Community College. But as for Community itself, Chevy Chase says he was far better than the material in front of him.
In a recent interview with Marc Maron on his Wtf podcast, Chevy Chase insisted that NBC’s Community had plenty of strong components to it but the show itself was far below him. “Honestly, I felt the show wasn’t funny enough for me, ultimately…I felt a little bit constrained a bit…Everyone had their bits and stuff, I thought they were all good, but it just wasn’t hard-hitting enough for me.” He even suggested that it was such a minor point in his career, saying he “kinda [forgets] about that.”

The NCIS cast is in mourning following the tragic news of David McCallum's death at 90.
Deadline reported that the Scottish actor died Monday morning of natural causes surrounded by family at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
"For over 20 years, David McCallum endeared himself to audiences around the world playing the wise, quirky, and sometimes enigmatic Dr. Donald 'Ducky' Mallard," said current NCIS exec producers Seven D. Binder and David North in a statement.
"But as much as his fans may have loved him, those who worked side by side with David loved him that much more."
"He was a scholar and a gentleman, always gracious, a consummate professional, and never one to pass up a joke."
"From day one, it was an honor to work with him, and he never let us down," the statement adds.
"He was, quite simply, a legend. He was also family and will be deeply missed.

As the decades flew by, he was at the helm of some of the most beloved sci-fi and horror pictures of all time, whilst also composing the music for most of them, including the iconic scores for Halloween and Escape from New York.
Today, we’re ranking the director’s output, from Dark Star in 1974 to The Ward in 2010, but we should note that we haven’t included TV movies like Elvis or Someone’s Watching Me here, as we...

Can’t see the lines, can ya, Russ? It wasn’t just Chevy Chase and his video camera that wanted a glimpse of Beverly D’Angelo in the shower in National Lampoon’s Vacation, but also her onscreen son, Anthony Michael Hall, who recently fessed up to trying to sneak a peek while she filmed her brief nude scene.
Attending Fan Expo Chicago (via EW) with fellow castmates D’Angelo, Randy Quaid (Cousin Eddie), Dana Barron (Audrey Griswold), and Christie Brinkley (the unforgettable Girl in Red Ferrari), Hall – who was just 14 while filming National Lampoon’s Vacation – was called out by his onscreen sister for once trying to spy on D’Angelo. Hall cut her off, saying, “So, I got busted because I tried to sneak onto the set when Beverly was doing the shower scene.” D’Angelo seems to take it all in stride, though, saying, “I get a lot of guys who...

How do you solve a problem like Chevy Chase? Throughout his lengthy career, the actor has had a long, troubled history of acting like a jerk to nearly everyone he's worked with, from the infamous backstage fight he had with Bill Murray upon leaving Saturday Night Live to his much-publicized feud with showrunner Dan Harmon while co-starring on the beloved NBC sitcom "Community." By many accounts, the star is, at best, annoying to work with, and, at worst, an insufferable jerk.
That behavior would seem to be the end-all, be-all explanation for why Chase's film career eventually floundered despite having a pretty strong start. Yet, like most things, that isn't the whole story: for one, Chase is an incredibly talented actor and comedian, despite his personal shortcomings. For another, his persona being what it is — this is the man who made a splash announcing himself on SNL as "I'm Chevy Chase,...

The band is back together on Jersey Shore Family Vacation as Sammi “Sweetheart” Giancola returns to the franchise. Yes, the “sweetest b*tch you’ll ever meet” makes her return after 11 years in the back half of season 6. If that wasn’t enough, fellow Og cast member and Sammi’s ex Ronnie comes back after he stepped away from the show to deal with legal and personal issues. Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino couldn’t be happier to have a truly full house, which also includes Paul “Pauly D” DelVeccho, Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi, Ronnie Ortiz-Magro, JWoww” Farley, Vinny Guadagnino, Deena Nicole Cortese and Angelina Pivarnick. “This season is like no other,” Mike teases to TV Insider. “Sam is back. Angelina is unpredictable. I try to be the voice of reason. Sometimes it doesn’t work. The fans and viewers get to see how we navigate all that.” Here “Big Daddy SItch...

Marvel star Chris Hemsworth joined another team of heroes when he was cast in the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot starring Kristen Wiig. But the 2016 supernatural feature had a surprising affect on the actor’s future Marvel performance.

Hemsworth spoke very highly of his time on the set of the newly rebooted Ghostbusters. The movie was a remake of the classic 1984 Bill Murray picture of the same name. But 2016’s Ghostbusters featured a group of women defending Earth from ghosts and other supernatural delinquents directed by Paul Feig. Hemsworth joined the cast as a receptionist recruited by the ghost-hunting group. Although he was somewhat hesitant to join the new Ghostbusters, Hemsworth couldn’t have enjoyed the experience more.
Ghostbusters also offered a bit more flexible acting than Hemsworth was used to, allowing him to go off script.

Max’s first full month without ‘HBO’ in its rebranded title has a selection that kicks off summer 2023 in fine fashion. Three of the four iterations of “A Star Is Born,” including the most recent remake starring Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga, are streaming on Max in June. The 1954 and 1976 films land June 1, while the 2018 version arrives June 8.
To prepare for Margot Robbie’s performance in “Barbie” come July, one could watch one of her more intense roles as Tonya Harding in “I, Tonya” (2017). For some lighter summer watches, viewers might consider “Dolphin Tale” (2010), “Grease” (1978), “Hairspray” (2007) or “Tooth Fairy” (2010).
“Magic Mike’s Last Dance” (2023) starring Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek Pinault lands at Max after its theatrical release in February this year. Another major theatrical release from 2022, “Avatar: The Way of Water” (2022), swims onto the streamer starting June 7.

The Amityville Curse seemed to bear a couple of its own curses. It’s an Amityville knockoff and after Amityville Cult, Amityville Thanksgiving, Amityville in the Hood, and so many more, it’s pretty much a guarantee of mediocrity. Secondly, it’s a Tubi Original, which usually carries a very similar guarantee.
But there were a couple of reasons to be hopeful as well. Director Éric Tessier may not be well known outside of Quebec but his adaptions of two of Patrick Senécal’s novels, 5150 Elm’s Way and more importantly, Sur le Seuil aka Evil Words, are both excellent. Dennis Heaton wrote the film, based on the novel by the late Hans Holzer. Heaton you may recall wrote the Billy Connolly zom-com Fido.

HBO Max is no more. In its place are…HBO and Max. Warner Bros. Discovery’s big change to its premier streaming service was simply to take the “HBO” off of the name “HBO Max,” leaving just “Max.” But in announcing its list of new releases for Max in June 2023, Warner is highlighting all of the HBO content anyway. So here is everything you can expect to find on Max (including every new HBO show) this month.
Even though June 2023 is the first full month of Max’s existence without the helpful “HBO” modifier in front of it, literally all of its major original offerings are thanks to the pay cable network. June 4 sees the premiere of The Idol, the controversial TV project starring The Weeknd and written by Euphoria‘s Sam Levinson. After that, season 3 of Danny McBride evangelical comedy The Righteous Gemstones premieres on June 18. That will be...

Fresh Christmas horror is on the way with the upcoming Norwegian holiday horror romp There’s Something in the Barn, which comes courtesy of director Magnus Martens.
Described as “Gremlins meets Home Alone meets National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” the film features Martin Starr (Intruders) and Amrita Acharia (Game of Thrones, The Serpent Queen), who previously starred together in zombie movie Dead Snow 2.
“It follows a typical American family who inherits a farm in the Norwegian mountains and crosses paths with a tricky creature from Nordic folklore, the Barn Elf.
“The family must avoid incurring the wrath of this gnome-like Santa by eschewing all bright lights and loud noises and making sure to leave a bowl of porridge on Christmas Eve.”
The film has been described as “an ambitious artistic bridge between American classics and Norwegian mythology,” as well as “one of those fun rides you rarely come across.”

Christina Applegate turned down the role of Elle Woods in 'Legally Blonde''. The 51-year-old actress had not long finished playing Kelly Bundy in the long-running sitcom 'Married... with Children' when she was approached to play the sorority girl-turned-lawyer in the now-classic comedy and joked that saying no to the part was a "big f****** mistake" because she is now not as wealthy as the movie's eventual star Reese Witherspoon, who has a reported net worth of $400 million. She told Variety: "I wouldn’t toy with the idea of 'Legally Blonde' because it felt too fresh getting out of 'Married…With Children'. It was very similar on paper. I started to read it and I remember calling them and going, ‘Oh, it’s too similar. Can’t do it.’ Um, big f****** mistake. I’d have Witherspoon money! No, just kidding!"However, the 'Vacation' star...

With its built in fanbase and $45 million budget (roughly $77 million in 2023 dollars) it seemed like a safe bet that it could at least recoup its budget simply by bringing in the fans of the game. That film would open to just $7.2 million on its way to a horrible $33.8 million worldwide take and would quickly be forgotten (ee dedicated a recent Wtf episode to it). Well, 23 years later it appears that ship has been righted as Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves has come in slightly above expectations with an estimated $38.5 million opening weekend take. I guess it makes sense that one of the original Freaks & Geeks is half responsible for making the first successful D&d film. Indeed, John Francis Daley...

[Editor’s note: The following story contains spoilers for “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.”]
A good “Dungeons & Dragons” session always features some memorable NPCs (that’s a “non-playable character” for you newbies) and supporting characters for the central party to encounter. In the new film “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves,” our heroes come across plenty of allies and enemies, but none make quite as immediate an impression as Marlomen, the ex-lover of barbarian Holga (Michelle Rodriguez) who is played in an unexpected one-scene cameo by Mr. Jackson Maine himself: Bradley Cooper.
The scene is a delightful surprise for many reasons, starting with the fact that Marlomen is a diminutive halfling, only reaching the ripped Holga’s belly button. Then there’s a fact that he’s pretty clearly patterned off of the Hobbits from “Lord of the Rings,” living in a cottage that brings The Shire immediately to mind.
But, while there’s definitely a kick from...

In the latest episode of Crew Call, we talk to Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves directors, scribes and EPs John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein about the vision they sold to Paramount to make the dark and dingy world of the role playing game, not just fun, but funnier. And even more so, a broad film that appealed to the die-hards and non-die hards alike. That take seems to be working after a rapturous SXSW world premiere and critical and audience scores well over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Per box office sources right now, the Paramount & eOne movie is headed to a $40M weekend start, at the top end of where tracking saw it, after a $16M Friday (that includes $5.6M previews). Meanwhile, the second weekend of Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4 is eyeing $8.2M, and a $30M take, -59% for a running cume of $124.6M.

If you’re in the mood for an action movie, there’s the superb “John Wick: Chapter 4” in theaters. If you’re only looking for a Netflix streaming whodunit, there’s “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” just a click away. Or, it’s late or you’re hungover or doing laundry or just in need of background noise. Enter: the perfect movie, “Murder Mystery 2.”
Four years after the first blandly titled (dare we say meta?) take on Agatha Christie meets the “Vacation” movies, the sequel is back with plenty of “my wife” jokes and outlandish locations for an unassuming American couple to ruin. But damn if that couple isn’t charming.
Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston are back as Nick and Audrey Spitz, who have now started a private investigator agency in Brooklyn. The only problem? Their cases are dwindling and — so is the steaminess in their marriage.

Juliette Lewis got all choked up on Wednesday’s episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show” – and it wasn’t from discussing the trauma her character endures as a stranded survivor of a plane crash on Showtime’s “Yellowjackets.”
Instead, Kelly Clarkson asked the longtime actor about one of her earliest timeless classics, “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.”
“I know that you’ve talked about this a billion times, but my family will actually kill me if I don’t bring it up, so you’re welcome,” Clarkson began, explaining that she watches “Christmas Vacation” with her family every year.
“How could I be mad at that?” Lewis said, genuinely warmed by the thought.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein have been to the SXSW Film Festival twice before — for 2013’s “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone,” which they wrote, and 2019’s “Stuber,” which they produced. But when the pair debut the action-comedy “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” as the opening film of the annual Austin event this Friday, it will be the first time they’ve done so as directors. They couldn’t be more excited.
“It’s the perfect setting for this movie,” Goldstein says, sitting in the Paramount lot office he shares with Daley, for an interview with Variety about the release of their latest movie.
“It feels like the quintessential South By film,” Daley adds. “It’s big and all-encompassing but there’s also something a little bit subversive about it.”
If it wasn’t for a Chicago Cubs game and a lightning-fast superhero, however, it may have never happened.
