The creators of Castlevania: Nocturne shocked the entire fanbase last year when they introduced Alucard into the story. Alucard was one of the main characters of the prequel Castlevania story, as he helped Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades defeat his father, Dracula, and later on, fight death itself.

Many believed that, just like Trevor and Sypha, Alucard’s story was also concluded with Castlevania, but his entry in Castlevania: Nocturne has certainly opened ways for new narratives and storylines to be introduced into the story. However, there was one problem with his character design that needed to be changed.
The director of the series once revealed that he was frustrated with one aspect of Alucard’s design, and if they had not changed it, this particular aspect would have only gotten worse with time. The aspect that frustrated the director was Alucard’s hair,...

Castlevania: Nocturne introduces a series of characters who go on from the original series and games to create their own captivating stories. The characters of Richter Belmont and Annette play the central roles in the series and it is their journey that is followed throughout it. Born to play the Damsel in Distress, Annette can be viewed as someone who needs rescuing time and again, waiting for her perfect prince to save her. However, the series changes her route, making her not a damsel but a seeker.

During an interview with Gizmodo, Castlevania: Nocturne writer Clive Bradley talked about how the changes in Annette’s character started a ripple effect.

Netflix isn't just known for cancellations, especially in recent years.
It's also the reigning champion of spontaneous cancellations, catching fans off-guard and delivering some real gut punches.
Some refer to it as a cancellation loop, and it's making viewers wary of investing their time and subscription money on new and exciting shows.
Netflix is dealing with the self-inflicted wounds that come with popular shows, forcing them into an endless loop that's not based on reality but perception.
It's also changing successful, tried-and-true storytelling formulas and driving creators to other streaming platforms so their product stands a chance at longevity.
To be fair, this is not unique to Netflix, especially as other streaming platforms continue to grow.
But Netflix is the Og with the most shows and brand recognition.
Because of that, the damage to the brand from especially infamous cancellations feels more extensive to fans.

There are very few anime series adapted from video games that are able to compete with other anime series, and Castlevania is one of them. Considered the best video game adaptation, Castlevania portrayed the dark fantasy narrative of the Konami video game, which had over thirty different variations and spanned over three decades.

Maintaining a chokehold on the streaming business as the one with the largest subscriber base, Netflix has long taken steps to update its vast catalog of content. Investing a significant amount of its fortunes in creating original pieces and adapting media from various other formats, the streamer has attained pitch-perfect success with its Castlevania outing.
Famed as a beloved adult dark fantasy animation, the series has built a strong following thanks to the creative decisions taken by its executives.

One of the biggest hurdles every project relying on an adaptation faces is at its beginning. A similar situation lay in front of the showrunners for the Netflix original animation. Several paths lay in front of them as well as the risks of stereotyping the characters. However, a set of decisions regarding its visual flair and story approach gave the franchise the status that it boasts today.

Castlevania, Netflix’s animated series inspired by Konami’s video game, has received steady attention over the years. After four seasons, the saga of Alucard concluded in 2021.
Another sequel series, Castlevania: Nocturne, debuted in 2023 focusing on Richter Belmont, a descendant of Trevor and Sypha. It is one of the few series that have performed well despite being adapted from a game, and in an interview, Kevin Kolde, the executive producer behind the series, discussed the ups and downs of the franchise.

The video game curse is a common term that refers to the phenomena of series or movies adapted from video games that end up performing horribly. Many of these adaptations have poor writing as well as visuals and incorporate too many original elements. This makes people distance it from the original game, and the media ends up failing.

The Netflix animated series Castlevania ended its four-season run in 2021. Based on the popular video games from the Japanese company Konami, the show adapted the third game in the series for two seasons before moving on to other stories in the third and fourth. The show’s final two seasons received polarizing responses.
While the show has impressed fans in most instances, it has also been notorious for not listening to fans’ demands. The final season sees Dracula survive the showdown between him and protagonist Trevor Belmont and introduces Death into the lore of the show. When asked if the fans’ demands were part of the decision, producer Kevin Kolde mentioned that they do not listen to the fans all the time.

When Netflix released its first-ever Engagement Report — a revealing look into what (and how much) people are watching within the streamer’s film and TV catalog — live-action adult and young adult series like Ginny and Georgia, The Night Agent and Fubar were among those that topped nearly a billion hours watched.
But between January and June 2023, seasons of animated originals Sonic Prime, Gabby’s Dollhouse, Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse, My Dad the Bounty Hunter and The Creature Cases also ranked among the 500 most-viewed series (out of 18,000), as did acquisitions like Paw Patrol, CoComelon, Pj Masks and Peppa Pig.
And while much of the streamer’s most popular animated content came from its kids and family programming, the report reveals new and previously released seasons of adult animation and anime entries like Castlevania, Love, Death & Robots, Bee and Puppycat, Disenchantment, Big Mouth, and Skull Island were among the top 22 percent of watched titles.

Despite both games having 8 nominations, Larian Studios’ RPG snagged five wins, including the coveted Game of the Year. Baldur’s Gate III also won the awards for Best Community Support, Best RPG, Best Multiplayer, and the Player’s Voice.
Fortunately, Alan Wake 2 didn’t walk away empty-handed. Remedy’s return to Bright Falls won the awards for Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, and Best Art Direction. Capcom’s remake of Resident Evil 4, however, was not so fortunate. The remake was shut out of all of its nominations, while Resident Evil Village won its only nomination in the Best VR/Ar Game category.

Shadow And Bone, Glamorous and Agent Elvis are among the five shows Netflix is cancelling, it’s been announced.
Netflix has announced that it’s cancelling a handful of its original TV shows in the wake of the recent Hollywood strikes. The shows affected are, in no particular order, Glamorous, Agent Elvis, Farzar, Captain Fall and Shadow And Bone.
Of these, Shadow And Bone is perhaps the most high-profile; a fantasy series based on the books by Leigh Bardugo, it was headed up by Oscar-winning screenwriter Eric Heisserer (he wrote the script for Arrival). Featuring a sprawling ensemble cast which included Jessie Mei, Kit Young and Zoe Wanamaker, Shadow And Bone ran for two seasons and was generally well received, with Netflix – which is usually secretive about viewing figures – saying that the first season had been watched by 55m households worldwide.

When the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes got underway earlier this year, many Netflix shows were left with fates up in the air.
Now that the strikes are over and Hollywood is getting back to normal, the series won't be making the cut for additional seasons are being revealed.
Deadline revealed Wednesday that Shadow & Bone, Glamorous, Agent Elvis, Farzar, and Captain Fall will not be returning.
Shadow & Bone is the highest profile of the five shows, having made it to a second season.
Despite the freshman season garnering considerable buzz, Shadow & Bone Season 2 launched earlier this year to little fanfare.
Based on the Grishaverse books by Leigh Bardugo, Shadow and Bone Season 2 follows Alina Starkov, who is now on the run.
The series stars Jessie Mei Li (Alina Starkov), Archie Renaux (Malyen Oretsev), Freddy Carter (Kaz Brekker), Amita Suman (Inej Ghafa), Kit Young (Jesper Fahey), Danielle Galligan (Nina Zenik...

Netflix has canceled five original series in the aftermath of the Hollywood double strike. The streamer decided not to renew live-action dramas “Shadow and Bone” and the Kim Cattrall-led “Glamorous,” along with animated series “Agent Elvis,” “Farzar” and “Captain Fall.”
The news comes as the streamer evaluates the impact of the long work stoppage related to the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes. There have been cancellations and un-renewals across the industry related to the production halt, with many freshman series particularly vulnerable since it would take too long for them to turn around new episodes and stay in the cultural conversation.
Exceptions include hit series like “The Night Agent” and “One Piece,” who’s impressive debuts guaranteed them quick renewals even during the strikes.
“Shadow and Bone” is the only sophomore series in the bunch. A hit in its first season, the show is inspired by the Grishaverse novels by Leigh Bardugo.

“Shadow and Bone” and “Glamorous,” along with adult animated series “Agent Elvis,” “Farzaar,” and “Captain Fall” will not be returning for new seasons at Netflix, Variety has confirmed.
The announcement comes as Hollywood streamers and broadcasters continue to assess the impact left by the work stoppages due to the months-long WGA and SAG-Aftra strikes. Sources say Netflix’s decision to cancel stemmed from various reasons including performance and impact from the strike — as the industry evaluates production schedules, scheduling shifts, etc.
As Netflix has said about previous cancellations, the streamer continues to look at viewing versus cost as it evaluates shows. In the case of series like “Agent Elvis,” “Glamorous,” “Farzaar,” and “Captain Fall,” each show only ran for one season before its cancellation. While “Shadow and Bone” received a cancellation after running its second season, which arrived on the streamer in March.

‘Shadow And Bone’, ‘Glamorous’ & ‘Agent Elvis’ Among 5 Series Canceled By Netflix Amid Strike Impact
Exclusive: Netflix will not be going forward with more seasons of live-action series Shadow and Bone and Glamorous and adult animated comedies Agent Elvis, Farzar and Captain Fall.
The decision was made a week after the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike and a month and a half after the end of the WGA work stoppage as networks and platforms continue to evaluate the impact from the strike-related seven-month production shutdown.
While there had been a slew of series cancellations and un-renewals by linear networks and streamers during and immediately after the strikes, Netflix had largely refrained from making cancellation decisions during the past 6½ months while announcing a number of renewals, including One Piece (S2), Ginny & Georgia (S3 and S4); The Lincoln Lawyer (S3), Xo, Kitty (S2), Heartstopper (S2 and S3), The Night Agent (S2 picked up on the eve of the WGA strike), The Diplomat (S2), Fubar (S2), Sweet Magnolias...

Gaming’s biggest awards night returns on December 7 with The Game Awards 2023, and the nominees are in across more than 30 categories. As expected, it’s crowded at the top for nominations, with Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate III and Alan Wake II leading the way with 8 nominations each.
The big question (as with most years) is the Game of the Year Award. This year, Baldur’s Gate III and Alan Wake II are up for the award, but Nintendo has an edge with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is also nominated, as is Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 remake, which has three nominations in total.
Aside from Resident Evil 4 and Alan Wake II, horror gaming is represented by Lies of P (Best Art Direction and Best RPG), Dead Space (Best Audio), Diablo IV (Best Multiplayer and Innovation in...

The Game Awards 2023 panel has revealed the full list of nominees who will be eligible to win at this year’s show. While many of the nominees are relatively unsurprising, there are certainly a few games that did (and didn’t) get nominated that will get people talking.
Here’s everything you need to know about The Game Awards 2023’s nominees and voting process.
The Game Awards 2023: How Voting Works
According to the Game Awards website, Game Awards winners are determined by a “blended vote” that accounts for jury votes and fan votes. The jury votes account for 90% of the voting weight while the fan votes make up the remaining 10%.
Though an example of that formula is not provided, it’s basically best to think of the system like a 10-person voting jury. Nine of the jurors would represent voting individuals of the group, and the 10th person would...

David Beckham scored a goal with his latest Netflix docuseries.
Beckham took the top spot among the streamer’s English-language series in its debut week, securing 12.4M views.
That means that Sex Education Season 4 was knocked down a peg, but it still managed to hold onto No. 2 with 6.6M views — which is quite a drop from the 13.4M views it secured the week prior. It must have been a slow week for streaming though, because that was nearly twice the amount of views as Love Is Blind Season 5, which came in at No. 3 with 3.7M.
One Piece remains on the list for its sixth week in a row at No. 4, this time taking home an additional 2.5M views. Season 5 of Virgin River logged its fifth week on the list, taking sixth place with 2M views.

“Beckham” is leading Netflix’s Top 10 English language TV list after a clip from the docuseries went viral over the weekend.
The aforementioned clip shows David Beckham questioning his wife, Victoria Beckham, over her claims she grew up working class. Not only has the clip made a sizable impression on social media, but it seems as though the show it’s from has been popular as well. The docuseries topped Netflix’s English language list with 12.4 million views during its first week.
The four-episode limited series was then followed by Season 4 of “Sex Education,” which accounted for 6.6 million views, and Season 5 of “Love Is Blind,” which brought in 3.7 million views. “One Piece” also appeared on the list for its sixth week in a row, nabbing the fourth spot as well as 2.5 million views.

Castlevania: Nocturne debuted on September 28, picking up 300 years after the events of the original Castlevania series. Nocturne unfurls its leathery wings on the streamer after four successful seasons of the original series inspired by the beloved Konami video game franchise.
Set in 1792, during the French Revolution, Castlevania: Nocturne focuses on Maria Renard and Richter Belmont, a descendant of Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades. While the first series drew inspiration from Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse and Castlevania: Curse of Darkness, Nocturne is primarily based on the 1993 video game Castlevania: Rondo of Blood and its 1997 sequel Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
Here’s the synopsis for the first season of Castlevania: Nocturne:

Before “The Last of Us” and “Arcane,” it was Netflix’s and Powerhouse Animation’s “Castlevania” (now in its fourth season) that broke the video game adaptation curse with a highly stylized, anime-inspired horror-action show based on the Konami video game series. Now, the spinoff series “Castlevania: Nocturne” moves the action forward 300 years to the time of the French Revolution. With the new time period comes new themes, an expanded worldview, and a big change to the show’s visual style. Unsurprisingly, the biggest change was in the action, all thanks to one invention: Firearms.
“We had guns,” director Sam Deats told IndieWire. “A rifle-axe was my favorite thing, inspired by a trip to a New York museum that had a whole display of different weapons mixed with guns, and I just wanted to incorporate some of that in the show.”

This Castlevania review contains spoilers.
When Netflix’s Castlevania animated series first released in 2017, it was nothing short of a miracle: at last fans had a video game adaptation that was not only worthy of its beloved source material but was also a hell of a lot of fun to watch in its own right, especially in its early, Dracula-focused seasons. Netflix got the formula very right back then and its sequel, Castlevania: Nocturne, largely nails it too, even if its 8-episode first season sometimes drags in the middle.
Set in 1792, about 300 years after the adventures of Trevor Belmont, the events of Nocturne unfold during the chaos of the French Revolution, a very suitable backdrop for all the gruesome violence that ensues at the crack of a Belmont whip. Returning directors Sam and Adam Deats go for broke with action sequences that extract every last ounce of blood, guts,...

Netflix’s Castlevania animated series helped break barriers for not only its medium, but also the longstanding stigma that video game adaptations were doomed to fail. Castlevania gracefully bowed out after telling a complete story over the course of four seasons. However, it was revealed that the franchise would continue, albeit with new Castlevania series within the same universe, almost in a style that’s akin to JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure.
Castlevania: Nocturne is the first of these new Castlevania series and it follows Richter Belmont, Maria Renard, and a team of intrepid monster hunters in an apocalyptic struggle that’s set against the French Revolution. Castlevania: Nocturne builds upon its predecessor’s strong foundation and finds a careful balance that will appease both fans of the original and newcomers alike. As an adaptation of one of the most popular action RPG franchises, Netflix’s Castlevania series hit the ball out of the park with refreshing, relatable characterization. The morally gray characters blurred the line between the conventional binary of good and evil, an aspect that made iconic characters like Dracula, Alucard, Trevor, and Sypha not only relatable but also kept their core essence intact, which resulted in a surge in the franchise’s fanbase at the same time. Even side characters like Isaac and Hector from the original series were given distinctive personalities and character arcs, the likes of which can rarely be seen in other adaptations of similar kinds.
Respecting the legacy of the original series, the spin-off Castlevania: Nocturne presents an interesting set of characters in its first season. Being set in the transitional period of the late 18th century, the series draws inspiration from the then-global political...

One major factor that made Netflix’s Castlevania animated series click among audiences was the detailed world-building centered on gothic trappings that replicated the original game series’ scope and settings perfectly. Through four seasons, viewers got to familiarize themselves with the expansive world, explore a number of character arcs, and indulge in speculation, as the series opened such a vista of phantasmagoria that even after ending, it left numerous possible waypoints for further exploration.
The follow-up series titled Castlevania: Nocturne, which is streaming on Netflix, takes the lore into the late eighteenth century, during the late phases of the Age of Enlightenment. An era marked by extreme antithetical aspects as, on the one hand, reason and revolution prevailed over the western world, but at the same time, the horrors of colonization were getting into full swing as well. An era marked by extreme antithetical aspects as, on the one hand, reason and revolution prevailed over the western world, but at the same time, the horrors of colonization were getting into full swing as well. Centered in such a tumultuous period, Castlevania: Nocturne introduces viewers to the...

With Netflix’s Castlevania: Nocturne looking like it will continue the success of the previous animated series, it’s probably not a coincidence that its inspiration, 1993’s Castlevania: Rondo of Blood, is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. Long considered one of the best, if not the best, entry in the series, Rondo of Blood paved the way for greater things for the series after its release. Even today, the game still remains an enjoyable romp, and is far more accessible now than it was back when it was released.
Set in 1792, Dracula has once again been resurrected. With the help of the dark priest Shaft, Dracula kidnaps four women on behalf of Dracula. One of those women is Annette, the beloved of 19-year-old Richter Belmont, a descendent of Simon Belmont. Richter sets out with his family’s Vampire Killer whip to rescue the four women, but also to destroy Dracula once again.

Castlevania: Nocturne quickly finds a fast-paced, blood-soaked rhythm in this satisfying sequel to the Netflix animated horror series.
“Warriors in arms. Family in hearts.”
Castlevania: Nocturne becomes another prolonged pursuit between skilled and sullen vampire hunters and the dark creatures that go bump in the night. This basic plot may not be groundbreaking and if anything it leans into the predictable premise of each Castlevania game. That being said, the first scene–an extended cold open that runs for a third of the episode–is really the perfect distillation of why Castlevania: Nocturne is worth watching. A stunning battle between Julia Belmont and Orlox, a 250-year-old vampire, plays out while multiple forms of magic release supernatural spectacles as the two battle to the bitter end. In a single scene, Richter Belmont’s entire purpose gets crystalized and sets him–and the series–off on a strong, confident note. Castlevania: Nocturne...

Death, darkness, decay, and damnation return with the ornate, mystifying and gothic trappings of Netflix’s original animated series Castlevania: Nocturne. Created by Konami, the renowned action/horror RPG game franchise of the same name dominated the game arena for over two decades up to the mid-2010s and got its due revival with Netflix’s original animated series consisting of four seasons. Arguably the strongest entry in Netflix’s original animation content, the series paved the way for a more accurate adaptation of game-oriented narratives, as well as instilling contemporary sensibilities with the creation.
Majorly revolving around the rivalry between the vampire hunter Belmont family legacy and Dracula himself, the Castlevania series has inspired a number of classic narratives dealing with gothic horror and similar themes. The recently released Castlevania: Nocturne acts as a follow-up to the original animated series. The narrative of the animated series has been adapted...

Load Ebony and Ivory with bullets, radio Nico to bring the van around, and prepare to lay waste to hordes of demons because Netflix’s Devil May Cry anime series announcement is here! The eight-episode series comes from Adi Shankar, who created Netflix’s Castlevania. Studio Mir is handling the animation, with plenty of blood, bullets, and mayhem yet to come!
Netflix’s Devil May Cry anime series tease is part of the streamer’s Drop 01 event, focusing on its lineup of animated projects. In addition to Devil May Cry, Netflix teased looks at Castlevania: Nocturne, Masters of the Universe: Revolution, Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, Blue Eye Samurai, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, and Sonic Prime.
“I’m honored that Netflix and Capcom have entrusted me to shepherd the Devil May Cry franchise,” said Shankar. “[Writer] Alex Larsen and I love these characters.

It’s been a long time coming, but Capcom’s Devil May Cry is finally coming to Netflix in a new anime adaptation. Adi Shankar (the Executive Producer of Netflix’s Castlevania series) is involved, with the show being animated by South Korean animation studio Studio Mir. Netflix dropped a new teaser for the show earlier this afternoon.
This isn’t the first Devil May Cry anime adapation. Longtime fans will remember the 12-episode Ova (which Michael covered a few years back). There hasn’t been any info as of yet regarding the new series, nor is there an official release date. However, the teaser by Netflix lists Devil May Cry as “coming soon.”
Netflix wasn’t done there, as they also revealed the first look at Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft, which is being produced by Legendary with Crystal Dynamics, with Tasha Huo as the showrunner on the series.
