Dan Stevens is a busy man. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire landed in theaters at the end of March, where Stevens played charming leading man Trapper, then anarchic horror Abigail arrived hot on its heels in April. Next up, August brings strange horror/sci-fi Cuckoo, which sees Stevens playing a deranged scientist. Between press tours, festivals, and new projects, he’s got a lot going on. And we get the sense he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Describing himself as an “experience hound,” Stevens is a man who thrives on challenges. He began his career in theater, made it big as tragic heartthrob Matthew Crawley in British drama Downton Abbey, and has genre-hopped ever since, from action-thriller The Guest, to playing Sir Lancelot in family fun Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb. He sang and danced on stilts for Beauty and the Beast, played Charles Dickens...

The MonsterVerse has, somewhat quietly, become one of the most reliable franchises going in Hollywood at the moment. For a full decade dating back to 2014's "Godzilla" right up through this year's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," these films have built up a loyal audience with no signs of fatigue on the part of the viewers. While Warner Bros. and Legendary are quickly looking to get a new installment going, they will need a new director, as we recently learned that Adam Wingard will not be returning to the helm. So, who should take his place?
Wingard is the only filmmaker to direct two MonsterVerse installments, having helmed 2021's "Godzilla vs. Kong" as well as "The New Empire," which now ranks as the highest-grossing "Godzilla" movie ever. So sure, the studio would probably have liked him to return, but he's busy with other projects. Besides, that just opens the...

With the release of “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” on May 10, this year’s Best Visual Effects Oscar race just got a lot more interesting. That’s because we’re almost guaranteed to get three, possibly even four, movies in the race that are follow-ups to previous Visual Effects nominees. “Apes” is likely to be the fourth movie in its franchise nominated for the innovative performance capture used to help create the film’s photo-realistic apes. Three previous films, starring Andy Serkis, were nominated for Oscars in the category in 2011, 2014, and 2017, but none of them won.
The work done by director Wes Ball and his team has made “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” a serious contender in multiple below-the-line categories, not just visual effects. Its production design and sound are equally impressive. But the academy branch that’s most likely to be impressed will be the...

It was recently announced that Warner Bros./Legendary are officially moving forward with a follow-up to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, with writer Dave Callaham enlisted to pen the script for the untitled movie.
There was no mention of a potential director at the time, but it seems Adam Wingard, who helmed The New Empire and its predecessor Godzilla vs. Kong, was set to return.
Was being the operative word.
According to THR, Wingard is no longer in line to direct the project. Though the report stresses that he didn't have a deal in place, anyway, it sounds like he was tentatively attached prior to a parting of ways, which is described as "amicable and stemming from timing issues," with the door remaining "open for a future return."

It looks like the third film for the Godzilla x Kong franchise won’t be happening soon after director Adam Wingard exits the project. The latest installment, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, has proved to be a tremendous success for Legendary Pictures.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire / Legendary Pictures
Wingard co-wrote and helmed The New Empire with the intention of telling more stories from the famed MonsterVerse. He also revealed he’s working on another project which may have caused the delay of another Godzilla movie.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was released a couple of months ago as the most recent installment in the MonsterVerse franchise. And while the movie received mixed reviews from critics and is one of the installments with the lowest score, the fans loved it and the movie became one of the biggest titles on the box office this year, earning a lot of money. The movie was directed by Adam Wingard and it was actually expected that the director would remain with the franchise, as per our earlier reports. But, sad news comes from Hollywood, as it has been confirmed that Wingard quit the franchise (for now), so he won’t be the director of the planned Godzilla x Kong 3 movie.

There are roughly two types of Adam Wingard fans. There are the folks that know him from the MonsterVerse franchise, where he’s made films such as “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.” Then there are people who know him from his earlier films like his breakout “You’re Next” and the incredible “The Guest.” The former is going to be a bit bummed by the latest Wingard news while the latter are going to be psyched.

Who's ready to start their midweek, Hump Day grind on a bit of a mixed note? The good news is that I'll never again use the phrase "Hump Day grind" because, frankly, that just sounds unbearably filthy. Okay, the real good news is that Warner Bros. Discovery and Legendary Pictures continue to be in the business of making money and remain intent on keeping their kaiju-sized MonsterVerse movies going. The bad news, unfortunately, is that the next installment will have to do so without the involvement of director and writer Adam Wingard.
For those who've enjoyed the franchise's pivot towards rampant silliness throughout both "Godzilla vs Kong" in 2021 and its sequel, "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," it appears that the MonsterVerse must change course once again. Adam Wingard will not return to direct the “Godzilla x Kong” sequel, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
The filmmaker behind Legendary’s last two MonsterVerse hits — 2021’s “Godzilla vs. Kong” and 2024’s “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” — won’t return for a third installment. However, the door remains open for Wingard to return in the future.
The filmmaker didn’t have a deal in place to return, and will next direct “Onslaught” for A24 with Lyrical Media and Ryder Picture Company. Filming is scheduled to begin this fall. Wingard will direct from a script that he wrote with frequent collaborator Simon Barrett.
Wingard also has a “ThunderCats” movie in development at Warner Bros. centered on the 1985-1990 animated TV show about feline humanoids fighting to survive on a desolate planet against incredible odds.

The site reports that Adam Wingard, who directed both Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong, will Not be returning to direct the upcoming follow-up to Godzilla x Kong.
THR notes, “The parting of ways is described as amicable and stemming from timing issues. The door remains open for a future return, per insiders.”
Wingard is instead returning to his roots with the upcoming Onslaught, an action-thriller for A24 that’s said to be more in the vein of his earlier movies You’re Next and The Guest.

THR reports that Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire director Adam Wingard will not return for the sequel. According to insiders, the split is amicable and was due to scheduling issues, but the door remains open for Wingard to come back to the franchise down the line.
The studio had been keen on Wingard returning for the Godzilla x Kong sequel, but no deal was in place for him to do so. The director had been open to returning, previously saying, “There’s always the seduction of making a trilogy out of it, and I think that there’s some untapped areas to go into. There’s also ways to continue to innovate the stylized approach to the MonsterVerse, and what’s great about the MonsterVerse is that it’s allowed so many different directors to approach it with their unique style and color palette.” However, Wingard is set to direct Onslaught later this fall,...

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” (Warner Bros.), the year’s second-biggest grossing film so far (after the same studio’s “Dune: Part Two”). The $19.99 rental was an immediate #1 on both the iTunes (transaction counting) and Fandango (revenue) VOD charts.
The release comes 46 days after its theatrical opening, a fairly standard delay if not a bit longer. Meanwhile, “Godzilla Minus One” (Toho), the sleeper Japanese success and Oscar Visual Effects winner, has now passed the five-week mark since its domestic release with no home viewing options in sight.
The timing is tied to agreements between Legendary Films (the domestic “Godzilla” licensee) and the franchise’s Japanese owner to not directly compete with each other. As the Warners film advances in its home availability ($5.99 rentals and Max streaming still to come), it remains to be seen when Toho’s film will be permitted.

Newcomer If managed to unseat Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes by just $9.0 million to claim the top spot of the box-office weekend.
In its first weekend of release, Paramount Pictures’ If took in $35.0 million, which was enough to wrestle the number one slot away from Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which brought in $26.0 million over the weekend. Disney and 20th Century’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” conquered the international box office again with $40.6 million in its second weekend of release.
So far, the fourth chapter in the “Apes” reboot franchise has generated $136 million overseas and $237 million globally. It currently stands as the fourth-highest grossing movie of the year, behind “Kung Fu Panda 4” ($533 million), “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($561 million) and “Dune: Part Two” ($710 million).
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” cost $160 million to produce, so it needs to keep swinging at the box office to justify its price tag. International ticket sales will be key in turning a profit in its theatrical run. Top overseas markets include China with $20.4 million, France with $13.8 million, Mexico with $12 million and the U.K. with $10 million.
In a distant second place, Paramount and director John Krasinski‘s “If,” a fantasy-comedy aimed at young kids, collected $20 million from 58 markets.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, directed by Wes Ball, was released earlier this month and is having a splendid time at the box office as well as among critics. The Planet of the Apes franchise has moved forward in time with some new characters. But at the same time, it has managed to keep the nostalgia of the spirit from its previous iterations.

Franchise alums like Matt Reeves and Andy Serkis also gave it their stamp of approval with overwhelmingly positive reviews. And talks of a sequel to this new storyline are already making the rounds.

“If” (Paramount) may have fallen short of its anticipated $40 million opening, but the glass is at least half-full. Preview and initial numbers suggested it could end up around $28 million; instead, its initial estimate is $35 million.
That improvement, along with its A Cinemascore, suggests a film that could stick around. It would be a real boost for the cause of original non-franchise production. Domestic on “If” is better than foreign, which stands at $24 million, $20 million from this weekend. That puts it at $59 million worldwide.
The full weekend is projected to hit $99 million. If that becomes $100 million, it would mark the first time since Easter. By comparison, 2023 saw every weekend from April 7 through mid-August hit that level. In 2019, with significantly lower ticket prices, that was the case from post-Super Bowl through Labor Day.

The summer box office is supposed to be the time of year when popular movies can flourish, but this May has not been an ideal start to the season, with another highly anticipated film falling below expectations. Read on for the weekend box office report.
With the general lack of family films in theaters — allowing movies like “Kung Fu Panda 4” and even “Godzilla x Kong” to do very well — Paramount Pictures had very high hopes for John Krasinski‘s “If,” opening it in 4,041 theaters nationwide. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Cailey Fleming (with Krasinski in a small role as the latter’s father), the movie received poor to mixed reviews with just 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics not having been swayed by the film’s sweet family-friendly sentimentality.

Yesterday, it looked like John Krasinski’s If would fall wildly short of industry exceptions, with the film initially tracking for a $40 million opening. While the final $35 million start marks a significant shortfall, the weekend matinees have been stronger than expected for this poorly reviewed family film. It did about $5 million more this weekend than I predicted. Many will undoubtedly view this as a poor start for a pretty expensive ($110 million) studio film, but there’s reason to be optimistic that the movie will have legs. The film has scored a superb A CinemaScore rating, which means that even if critics (such as myself) hated it, paying audiences like it. The star-studded flick includes Ryan Reynolds and Krasinski himself in front of the camera, while Steve Carell, Phoebe Waller Bride, Emily Blunt and more play the voices of the titular IFs (imaginary friends).

The best thing the MonsterVerse has done is to unite two icons of cinema, Godzilla and Kong. Sure, 2014's "Godzilla" and "Kong Skull Island" may have ranked higher on our list of the best MonsterVerse movies, but it was with "Godzilla vs. Kong" that the franchise found its secret weapon — a big ape and a big lizard begrudgingly teaming up. Since then, the MonsterVerse has given us grand entertainment that only an IP-obsessed Hollywood could provide, while also fitting right in with the weirdness and silliness of the Showa era of monster movies.
Alongside its stakes, the MonsterVerse has also grown in mythology, as it introduced the concept of Hollow Earth, a whole unique world with its own lore, locations, and characters. That being said, these movies aren't exactly what you should watch if you want immediate answers to questions about lore of backstories — especially not about the Titans. After all,...

“Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” directed by Adam Wingard and starring Rebecca Hall, Kaylee Hottle, Dan Stevens, and Brian Tyree Henry, is a monstrous treat for both young and old. With Kong back in action, this new installment offers a thrilling experience filled with natural disasters—or perhaps not—as our favorite ape wreaks havoc on Earth’s surface, leaving no wonder of nature untouched.
Plot Summary
The storyline takes us to Hollow Earth, where a new threat looms: a King obsessed with reaching the surface who enslaves a Titan. But hope is not lost; Kong returns with his ally Godzilla and new characters, turning both realms into a colossal battleground.

One of 2024’s most electric hits is our top pick among this weekend’s streaming releases, but there’s something for everyone, including a searing documentary, an oddball indie, and a couple of middling blockbusters.
The contender to watch this week: “Challengers“
Luca Guadagnino‘s box-office backspin became one of spring’s moviegoing success stories, and we’re all the luckier for it. Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist‘s love-triangle tennis lark is still playing in plenty of theaters across the country, but if you want another serve, it’s available to rent for $19.99 on VOD. It’s not impossible to imagine a “Challengers” resurgence in the fall: Guadagnino is already an Oscar darling thanks to “Call Me by Your Name,” and Zendaya seems especially poised for top-tier accolades. If nothing else, maybe Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross‘ banger of a score can net the duo’s third trophy.

Call of Duty has entered a new phase where the traditional first-person shooter game is opening its doors to collaborate with other franchises. The gaming community has thrown a few ideas but there is one that could appeal to a larger audience and Activision could make it happen.

L to r) Godzilla and Kong in Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ action adventure “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release. Copyright: © 2024 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved. What a difference a few years has made for Adam Wingard — when he was tapped to direct 2021’s Godzilla vs. Kong, he was stepping into a franchise that had been around for decades. Even in terms of the modern-day MonsterVerse, he was the fourth director in as many movies to take on the challenge. Now, he’s the first MonsterVerse director to return for a second film, and Wingard said that getting the chance to pick up where he left off with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire gave him a sense of authorship and gave the movie a better sense of continuity. Bad Boys: Ride or Die is about to enter theaters and the only question in my mind is if Will Smith‘s Oscar 2022 controversy will end the long-running Bad Boys franchise.
It has been more than two years since Smith caused one of the biggest controversies in Hollywood. If you don’t remember let’s recap a bit, on the night of Oscar 2022 popular comedian Chris Rock came out to present an award and made a throwaway and truthfully harmless joke about Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett-Smith and that’s when Smith got up on the stage and slapped him. If that wasn’t bizarre enough, Smith went on to win the Best Actor award and the night went on like nothing had happened.
The whole internet was outraged by Smith’s action and he even attempted to apologize to the comedian and his fans but the damage had already been done.

2024 has been a great year for movies so far, and it only seems to be getting better. From A24 making history with the Civil War to Wes Ball succeeding in crafting a worthy continuation to the Planet of the Apes trilogy, now it seems, George Miller is too joining in on the fun.
Notable for making one of the greatest action films of all time, his upcoming addition to the Mad Max franchise is set to debut next week. Although Miller set the bar extremely high with Fury Road, following Furiosa‘s score on the Tomatometer, things are looking promising for the prequel.
Furiosa Surpasses Four Major Releases of 2024 on the Tomatometer

While not as high as Fury Road, which is sitting at 97% on the Tomatometer, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has opened to 86% on the review aggregator site.

Ryan Gosling’s The Fall Guy came with a lot of expectations. The film was one of the first to bring stunt people, who are some of the hardest workers in Hollywood, to the forefront. It also came with an exceptional cast of actors and was directed by one of the most predominant filmmakers and stuntmen in Hollywood, David Leitch. The same was the case for Henry Cavill’s Argylle, which was set to earn impressive figures.
Ryan Gosling as stuntman Colt Seavers in The Fall Guy
However, when both of these movies were released, the reactions of the audience were not what the creators expected. While both of these movies earned a considerable amount during their box-office run, they seemed to have failed to top this year’s charts. Although the year is not yet complete, these numbers are quite telling.

George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga will have some good commercial news at its back as it roars into its much-anticipated Cannes Film Festival premiere Wednesday night.
The Warner Bros. action tentpole has received censorship approval from Beijing regulators to get released in China, a source with knowledge of the decision tells The Hollywood Reporter. It will be the first film in the 45-year-old Mad Max movie franchise to open theatrically in the country, which is home to the world’s second-largest box office. Warner Bros. has applied for a June 7 release date for Furiosa, but the studio is still waiting for the final dating decision from China’s film regulators, according to THR‘s source.
Since the pandemic, Hollywood hits have been earning far less in China than they once did, as the country’s moviegoing youth have undergone a generational shift in taste towards domestic fare.

Jerry Seinfeld’s highly touted (and largely panned) feature directorial debut, “Unfrosted,” spent four days leading Netflix’s top 10 movie chart before another Netflix original, “Mother of the Bride” starring Brooke Shields, took the slot before the thematically appropriate weekend holiday.
“Unfrosted” led for just four days, with “Shrek” from 2001 leading midweek before the debut of “Bride.” The Dreamworks animated classic is still in second place, while Seinfeld’s Pop-Tarts comedy dropped to fourth.
“Bride” comes from director Mark Waters. Perhaps best known for his “Freaky Friday” remake and the original “Mean Girls,” Waters went on to direct “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” “Vampire Academy,” and “Bad Santa 2.” In the new rom-com, Shields is a mom who realizes the father of her future son-in-law broke her heart decades ago.

Even though chatter has died down quite a bit since the movie opened in early April, A24's "Civil War" has managed to do pretty well for itself at the box office. Director Alex Garland's politically-charged view of a future America divided by war has found an audience even as bigger movies like "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," "The Fall Guy," and now "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes" have entered the marketplace. So much so that it now ranks as A24's second-biggest movie of all time at the global box office, and only the company's second title to cross the $100 million mark.
In its fifth weekend of release, "Civil War" added $1.8 million domestically to its growing total. It stayed in the top ten, coming in just above the re-release of "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace" ($1.5 million) and just below "Kung Fu Panda 4" ($1.82 million). That...

Talking apes managed to wrestle away the top spot of the box-office weekend from a stuntman as Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes finished just $6.8 million ahead of The Fall Guy
Debuting in first place to claim the box-office weekend crown was Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes with $56.5 million for 20th Century Studios. Finishing just behind that was last weekend’s top film, The Fall Guy with $13.7 million. This gives the Universal product a two-week tally of $49.7 million. Meanwhile, Challengers held onto third place with $4.7 million earned over its third weekend in release, giving the United Artists Releasing film a grand total of $38.1 million to date. Also holding steady was the Screen Gems release Tarot which took in $3.5 million over the weekend to retain the fourth spot of the top ten and bring its two-week total to $12.0 million. “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” (Disney) opened to $56.5 million, slightly above pre-opening projections, which is encouraging after “The Fall Guy” (Universal) last week. That’s a relief to theaters that hope summer releases meet their potential and buffer what is expected to be a major drop in revenues versus last year.
20th Century Fox released “Planet of the Apes” in 1968. For an old franchise, this is one that still has plenty of life: The “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opening matched the last “Planet of the Apes” installment in 2017 (albeit when tickets cost 15 percent less). Speaking of old franchises, it also beat the $55 million opening of the 2021 Bond entry “No Time to Die.” Disappointing B Cinemascore aside, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” seems poised for a solid run.

The mighty Planet of the Apes franchise ruled again at the box office, with the movie earning a mighty $56.5 million domestically (according to ComScore), which puts it right in line with the previous openings of Rise of the Planet of the Apes ($54.8 million) and War for the Planet of the Apes ($56.2 million). Dawn of the Planet of the Apes made a lot more at $72 million, but times have changed, and now a $50 million-plus opening is cause for celebration at the House of Mouse, with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes the first solid box office win for Disney (who are releasing through 20th Century Films) in a while. This is much more than the $40 million we predicted earlier this week.
However, there is one potential cloud on the horizon for the film. According to Deadline, the CinemaScore for the film has only garnered a B rating, which is low...

Updated: Primates ruled over the North American box office, as “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” collected $58.5 million in its first weekend of release.
That’s ahead of Sunday’s estimates of $56.8 million and enough to score the third-best opening of the year behind “Dune: Part Two” ($82 million) and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($80 million).
Inaugural sales for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” landed above early projections of $50 million to $55 million and towered over the nonexistent competition. “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” opened roughly even with two of the three prior installments in the rebooted franchise, landing behind only 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” (a series-best $72 million) and ahead of 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes” ($56.2 million) and 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” ($54.8 million).

“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” isn’t monkeying around.
The latest “Apes” entry from 20th Century Studios earned $22.2 million from 4,075 theaters on its opening day, a figure that includes $6.6 million in previews. “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” is estimated to make between $52 million and $56 million in its debut, which about the same as the last three installments.

Director Wes Ball (“The Maze Runner” trilogy) helms “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” which is tipped to kick off a new trilogy of films.

If traffic holds up, Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will succeed in opening to a solid $52 million to $56 million domestically for a first-place finish. Friday’s haul was $22.2 million, including $6.6 million in previews.
The Planet of the Apes franchise has always been a big player overseas, and the latest installment is opening around the globe timed to its North American release. Hopes are for an $80 million international launch.
The 20th Century and Disney movie is the second event pic of summer 2024 after Universal’s The Fall Guy, which left nerves frayed across Hollywood after opening to a disappointing $27.7 million over the May 5-7 frame. Tracking had suggested the action comedy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, would at least start off in the $32 million to $35 million range, which was already a subdued number.

This year's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire wasn't exactly a monster hit, but it did manage to take in close to $555 million worldwide on a reported $135 million budget. Now, we have word that a sequel is officially in development, and Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have enlisted a writer to pen the script.
According to THR, Dave Callaham has signed on to write the untitled movie. No plot details have been disclosed, but it's assumed that both the King of the Monsters and the mighty Monarch of Skull Island will return to face a new, potentially world-ending threat.

The Monsterverse will continue! THR reports that Dave Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) has been tapped to pen the sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire has proven to be a big success. The film is still in theaters, but it’s already grossed $548 million worldwide, making it one of the more profitable movies in the Monsterverse franchise, as it reportedly had a budget of just $135 million. Dave Callaham is no stranger to the Monsterverse, as he wrote the early drafts of the film that started the franchise: Godzilla.
Although the studio would like Godzilla x Kong director Adam Wingard to return for the sequel, there is no deal for him to do so. Wingard is set to direct Onslaught later this fall, which is said to be in the same vein as his previous cult classic movies, The Guest and You’re Next.
