At one time Jack Walker was the biggest action star in the world. Well, the biggest action star in Germany. But those days are long gone, and even the Dtv film offers have dried up. With the bills piling up he has no choice but to take a role in an uber low-budget film he feels is beneath him.
His feelings seem to be confirmed when Steve (Ben Plunkett-Reynolds; Jack and Ralph Plan a Murder), the director, and his assistant Piet (Bartholomäus Kowalski; Ultimate Justice) are having issues and the stunts keep going wrong. The presence of co-star Sylvia Meadows (Kathrin Höhne; The Hitman Agency) keeps Jack in a good mood though.

Ip Man: Kung Fu Master is the latest film to portray the legendary grandmaster of Wing Chun Kung Fu, Ip Man, the real life teacher of Bruce Lee who lived from 1983 to 1972. All the films have been heavily fictionalized, and the Ip Man film franchise is far from unified. There have been multiple actors, directors and filmmakers featuring Ip Man, and this new film is independent from all of those, although confusingly enough, it’s very connected.
The most prominent Ip Man franchise stars Donnie Yen. It began in 2008 with Ip Man and retained the same core team for four installments: directed by Wilson Yip, produced by Raymond Wong, and written by Edmond Wong.
Yip and Yen collaborated in some previous critically acclaimed martial arts films like Kill Zone (aka Spl: Sha Po Lang), Dragon Tiger Gate, and Flashpoint – all of which were well regarded for their high octane...

Flat-footed storytelling meets fleet-footed choreography and sumptuous production values in the untaxingly fun “Ip Man 4: The Finale,” the last installment of director Wilson Yip and producer-star Donnie Yen’s glossy mythmaking tetralogy about the famous Wing Chun master.
The insistent subtitle is there for a reason: everyone, Yen included, thought that “Ip Man 3” would be his last time donning Ip Man’s priestlike tunic. Then again, after “Ip Man 2,” still the best in the franchise, Yen was also reportedly reluctant to return. A little like the great, wise, noble sifu (“master-father”) he so convincingly embodies, Yen apparently only re-enters the fray when circumstances (read: box office) leave him no other option.
The problem, then, is how to sustain a story that had largely run out of arc by the bruising climax of the last film? The solution the regular team of screenwriters — Edmond Wong, Chan Tai-lee, Jil Leung,...

China’s internet is thrilled by news that Marvel appears to be insisting on casting an ethnic Chinese actor as Shang-Chi in the master of kung fu’s own spinoff film and has begun scouting out candidates for the role.
Variety reporter Justin Kroll tweeted Sunday that Marvel is apparently “putting out test offers for a group of men in their 20s” for its “Shang-Chi” movie. He added that the studio has “been adamant to reps offering up their clients for the role” that candidates “have to be of Chinese ancestry,” with no other Asian ancestry accepted.
Twitter is blocked on China’s highly censored internet, but that hasn’t stopped the tweet from going viral in the mainland. Users have screen-grabbed it and spread it on China’s parallel Weibo platform, where the hashtag “Shang-Chi casting” has since been viewed 100 million times, and the hashtag “Marvel’s first Chinese...

And now we’re coming to a close with the Ip Man trilogy as I finally revisit Ip Man 3. If you want, catch up on my write ups of Ip Man and Ip Man 2. Let’s also pretend Master Z and Ip Man 4 don’t exist for the time being ;) Ip Man 3 definitely washes out that bad taste of the prior film despite also having more boxing in it. I’m wondering if the film makers responded to the complaints from that movie and tried to fix them in this one? Let’s find out. Ip Man 3 opens up with a pandering cameo from a now older Bruce Lee who wants to study under the wing chun master. In an origin story that someone...

I remember going to see Ip Man 2 at the New York Asian Film festival when it was the opening night film. Samo Hung and Simon Yam were going to be doing an introduction so I was extremely excited to hear them speak. When the actors finally came out, they expressed that they had just flown in from an extremely long flight and were very exhausted. They spoke very briefly about the film before leaving and I remember being kind of disappointed but understood that yes, it is a Long flight to get here. Was this perhaps a bad omen? After the movie finished and the credits started rolling, I remember the guy who was sitting next to me, leaned over to his friend, and...

Disney’s live-action version of the classic Disney tale comes on the heels of various revival projects like “The Jungle Book” and “Beauty and the Beast,” both of which grossed over $1 billion worldwide. “Beauty and the Beast” grossed $174.8 million its opening weekend alone. A remake of “The Lion King” is one of many upcoming live-action projects.
The animated “Mulan,” released in 1998, was based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan and was directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook. It grossed $304.3 million worldwide after earning $22.7 million its opening weekend.
Yen was the martial arts choreographer for 2000’s “Highlander: Endgame” and 2002’s “Blade II,” appearing in both of those films as an actor, as well. He also starred opposite Jackie Chan in 2003’s “Shanghai Knights.”

Yen made his movie debut in the 1984 Hong Kong film “Drunken Tai Chi” and came to wider attention with his portrayal of Nap-lan Yun-seut in 1992’s “Once Upon a Time in China II.” His international breakthrough came playing the title character in 2008’s “Ip Man,” based on Wing Chun grandmaster — and Bruce Lee’s teacher — Yip Man. He reprised that role in 2010’s “Ip Man 2” and last year’s “Ip Man 3,” where Yen starred opposite boxing legend Mike Tyson – and accidentally broke the champ’s finger during a fight scene.
Yen is repped by CAA, Bullet Films, and Bloom Hergott.

The film was directed by Wilson Yip and Sammo Hung, produced by Raymond Wong, written by Edmond Wong, and stars martial arts legend, Donnie Yen, who reprises the leading role.

Still under the direction of Wilson Yip, the newest installment trades Sammo Hung for Yuen Wo-ping as action choreographer, ensuring that the extended fight sequences remain the focal points for the narrative. Structurally, Ip Man 3 is closer to Ip Man (2008) than Ip Man 2 (2010), in that it's more easily divided into multiple chapters in the life of the titular character. Rather than the first film's wartime tragedies, however, the focus narrows to an even more personal story, in that Ip Man's loyal and supportive wife Wing Sing (Lynn Xiong) must deal with a life-changing illness. In the first two films, Wing Sing remained dutifully in...

Plot: Master Ip Man (Donnie Yen) – trying to live a quiet live with his wife and son in 1959 Hong Kong – is drawn into a Triad land scheme run by a nefarious westerner (Mike Tyson). Meanwhile, he has to contend with a skilled rival (Zhang Jin) who challenges him to a public fight. The tale of Wing Chun grandmaster Yip Man continues in IP Man 3, with Donnie Yen returning to fill the hard-hitting fists of the man who taught Bruce Lee. Although Yen had previously said that IP Man 2 was going to be his final appearance as the grandmaster, it seems as though he couldn't resist returning to complete the story for one final film in director Wilson Yip's IP Man trilogy. If... Read More...

Dynamic, relentless and funnier than its predecessor, Ip Man 2 is the flashier, hipper and better looking of the first two films about the life of the Wing Chun grandmaster Yip Man. That said, the original Ip Man is in my opinion the better film and one of my favourite martial arts movies of all time. Now the question is, how will Ip Man 3 do?
Donnie Yen and Mike Tyson square off in the first teaser trailer for Ip Man 3, the third and possibly final chapter in the story of the legendary wing chun practitioner. Tyson’s character is reportedly based on an American property tycoon that Ip Man did once fight. Unfortunately, most of the footage in this trailer comes from the first two movies, which is a shame since it lasts only 40 seconds. Talk about a short tease.

The news broke last night that Donnie Yen’s final installment of the Ip man series will be released in theatres this Christmas in Asia. The news will have fans around the world very excited to see their idol back on the big screen showcasing his excellent wing chun skills as Ip man for one last time.
The trailer for Ip man 3 will also be released at the end of September and we will certainly post that when the time comes. After the second movie, Donnie Yen said he would not make a third “Because Ip Man 2 will incontrovertibly become a classic, bettering the first. I believe it’s best to end something when it’s at perfection, and leave behind a good memory”.

When it comes to making features like this one, i love the idea of coming up with my own personal “100 Great Kung Fu Movies” of all time. It is tough choosing just 100 because you know there are many more great Kung Fu movies that are not on the list.
I have decided that to make the list, a movie must have a few hand to hand moments during fight scenes in the movies chosen. If for example its mainly sword play with one fight scene hand to hand it won’t make the list. Its old school “style” Kung Fu movies, not modern day settings.
I understand everyone will have their own personal favorites and some may not agree with my list and that’s fine because it’s nice to have different opinions on this genre which keeps it fresh and alive when having good debates.
Anyway, thank you...

When you're in the mood for an action movie, Netflix has plenty to stream. Great, except that so many of their action titles are no-name, forgettable schlock. So we've done some of the heavy lifting by highlighting the best of the best currently available in the genre. Who do you want to see duke it out? Take your pick, from gangsters to gladiators, robots to ninjas, schoolkids to superheroes.
Cue that suiting-up pre-battle montage and start streaming, because here are some of the best action movies Netflix has to offer. (Availability subject to change.)

From director Takashi Miike ("Audition," "Ichi the Killer") comes this action-packed, samurai spectacular about 13 assassins on a suicide mission. Dig that 45-minute battle scene!

Wilson Yip’s IP Man, a biopic based on the life story Bruce Lee’s first martial arts teacher, won best film at yesterdays Hong Kong film awards. No luck for Donnie Yen to make it a double for the flick, as he failed to scoop the best actor accolade. That honour went to Nick Cheung for his performance in Dante Lam's gritty action cop drama ‘The beast stalker.’ Perhaps Donnie will have better luck next time around. “Ip Man 2” is already scheduled to start production in June, with principal photography expected to last until October. It's rare that a sequel surpasses the original, but a recent casting announcement concerning the follow-up to Ip Man (see Reed's review here [1]) seems to indicate that director Wilson Yip is gearing up to do just that. Legendary action star Sammo Hung has signed on as Donnie Yen's opponent in the film, playing a macho master of Hung Gar who takes exception to Ip Man's introduction of Wing Chun to the streets of Hong Kong, a style dismissed as being too feminine. I'm a great admirer of Sammo Hung, having spent the past few months going over some of his early work, so this is quite possibly the best movie news I've heard so far this year. It's amazing to see movies of this sort making a comeback. Aspects of traditional martial arts have been used to great effect in enhancing modern action movies, but the pure spectacle...

Okay. Time for some real news from me today and this news warms my heart oh so much.
Though he was behind the scenes in the first Ip Man film Hk martial arts acting legend Sammo Hung will be stepping in front of the camera for the sequel. Oh hell yes. The sequel takes place in 1949 after Yip Man arrives in Hong Kong and begins to teach Wing Chun. Sammo Hung plays a Hung Gar master. Hung Gar is a southern Chinese martial art whose most famous practitioner was Chinese folk hero Wong Fei Hung. Another famous practitioner of this martial art is another Hk martial arts film legend Lau Kar-leung [Drunken Master 2, The Spiritual Boxer, Eight Diagram Pole Fighter]. Ooh. I don’t know who to root for.
Above all, martial arts choreographer Sammo Hung… will be playing a Hung Gar master in the sequel, and will again be going toe to toe - or rather, finger to...

So, Filmart has come to an end and I’m sitting in the airport lounge awaiting my flight home as I type this. This was my first Filmart doing some business beyond simply festival scouting, which was a very different experience but also a rather productive one and hopefully I’ll be able to announce a few things soon. But first, a couple items I don’t want to slip through the cracks ...
First up, Korean giant pig movie Chaw. While the effects - dominantly CGI - in the promo being shown here didn’t appear to be quite finished this thing looked like a whole lot of fun. Basically someone in Korea has been watching Razorback and decided to run with it, only this time using a pig at least five times larger. Seriously, this thing is huge. I’ve had smaller apartments. Lots of action, good bit of gore,...
