Legendary producer and director Roger Corman, who died recently at age 98, had an immeasurable impact on American cinema as we know it. The number of actors, writers, and directors who learned their craft on a Corman production is staggering, and he was known for giving people chances to prove themselves on the low-budget pictures he either produced or directed himself. Tons of notable names went through the so-called "Corman school," including James Cameron, Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, Peter Bogdanovich, Jonathan Demme, Ron Howard, and Joe Dante, just to name a few.
Three-time Oscar-winning actor Jack Nicholson is another significant alumnus of the Corman school of filmmaking — in fact, his very first movie, "The Cry Baby Killer," was a Corman production, and it provided Nicholson the first of many starring roles across his incredible career. The film follows a young man who thinks he's committed murder outside of a local hang-out restaurant,...

Jack Nicholson has been in retirement for a while now. Taking a cue from the title of the last movie he appeared in, 2010’s “How Do You Know,” how do we know? When I talked to Nicholson for this reunion with director James L. Brooks – an unfortunate flop – I asked him why he waited three years to do another movie after his hit, “The Bucket List.” His response: “I’ve been reading scripts. Yes, they are all very similar. You just keep getting these stories about retirement, or the wife dying on you or going to Vegas. I’m definitely at the stage where I just don’t want to make another movie.”
Let’s then applaud this Oscar kingpin, who still holds the record among men for the most nominations and shares most wins (three) for a male actor with Daniel Day-Lewis and Walter Brennan. His victories were for...

A New Orleans native who was raised in Tennessee, Reese Witherspoon is the very definition of good things coming in petite 5-foot-1 packages. She made her film debut at age 14 in 1991’s “The Man in the Moon,” a bittersweet Southern coming-of-age tale of first love and loss. From then on, she was pegged as a young actress to watch. She would soon gravitate towards edgier fare such as the underwhelming 1994 comedy “S.F.W.” and 1996’s “Freeway,” a rancid take on a Little Red Riding Hood on the run. She then scored a signature role as the rabidly ruthless high-school over-achiever Tracy Flick in 1999’s political satire “Election.” That was followed by her first major box-office hit, 2001’s “Legally Blonde,” as a perky Harvard student with a penchant for pink, feathered pens and cute Chihuahuas.

Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining is a classic horror flick that really gets under your skin. It’s all about this guy named Jack Torrance, played by Jack Nicholson, who goes totally off the deep end. The 86-year-old’s performance is unforgettable, as he nails the whole tormented, crazy thing. But here’s the kicker: he never got an Oscar for it. Can you believe that?
Jack Nicholson in How Do You Know
Despite all the creepy vibes and stellar acting, the Academy just looked the other way. It’s a real head-scratcher and one of those moments where you wonder what they were thinking.

Most of the central cast in "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" were young when they appeared in Miloš Forman's 1975 movie. But with Danny DeVito, Christopher Lloyd, and the inimitable Jack Nicholson (to name just a few of the film's stars), Forman was going to have to try really hard to mess up his adaptation of Ken Kesey's 1962 novel. Luckily, the Czech director actually did a standout job of it, delivering a film often cited as one of the 20th century's finest. After a decade of delays, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" made it to the big screen, and while Forman's direction was excellent, the movie perhaps wouldn't occupy as vaunted a position as it does without that top-notch cast.

Jack Nicholson Isn’t Retired Yet, Says Director James L. Brooks: ‘I Don’t Buy’ That He’s Done Acting
Thirteen years after last appearing onscreen, and Jack Nicholson might still be open to working.
The Oscar winner most recently starred in 2010 rom-com “How Do You Know,” directed by his “Terms of Endearment” helmer James L. Brooks decades after first collaborating on the 1983 drama. Brooks told The Wrap that despite rumors, Nicholson is not retired.
“I don’t think he’s retired,” Brooks said. “I don’t buy that he’s retired.”
He continued, “I remember there was once a friend of mine who one of these raging, alcoholic-driven arguments [with me] about who was the greatest actor at the time. This was at Dustin Hoffman’s height and everything like that. I’m saying Jack Nicholson. He’s saying Dustin Hoffman. I went with [Nicholson] because I said Jack could play either in ‘The Odd Couple.'”

Jack Nicholson hasn’t acted since James L. Brooks’ 2010 feature “How Do You Know,” but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of people who would love to see him on the big or small screen again. Jack Nicholson technically hasn’t announced his formal retirement from the film biz, but it sure sounds like he’s still enjoying his time off. On a recent episode of Wtf with Marc Maron, the actor’s longtime record producer pal Lou Adler said he’s still turning down acting jobs in favor of other more leisurely activities like, say, sitting under a tree and reading a book.
The interview was just to wrap up when host Maron had to ask Adler how Nicholson was doing. “He’s doing whatever he wants to do,” Adler responded, reminiscing on the Lakers games the two octogenarians would often attend together. “He wants to be quiet. He wants to eat what he wants. He wants to live the life he wants.”

An actor so iconic, he’s sometimes referred to simply as “Jack.” With many classic movies and classic performances under his belt, plus an impression that people like to do, Jack Nicholson has been sealed in film history as one of the boldest actors in history. Jack’s career spans decades with some of the most notable movies in cinema, including The Shining, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Batman, Wolf, As Good As It Gets and The Departed. Jack’s been out of the game for a while, and for someone so famous, even the paparazzi rarely catch him anywhere, except at Los Angeles Lakers games as a notorious fan.

It’s been 13 years since Jack Nicholson appeared in “How Do You Know,” a dud of a romantic comedy starring Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson.
While the supporting role wasn’t the high point of Nicholson’s career — and brought the Hollywood legend to nearly 80 total acting credits — it did little to diminish a legacy that features a formidable if not unmatchable roll call of cinema classics that includes “The Departed” (2006), “The Shining” (1980), “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975) and “Chinatown” (1974), among others.
And though he never announced his retirement, the film by all accounts will be his last. One of those accounts surfaced in the “Wtf With Marc Maron” podcast this week, during a wide-ranging interview with famed record producer, Sunset Strip impresario and longtime Nicholson friend Lou Adler.

The LA Lakers game on April 28 brought out lots of stars, including actor Jack Nicholson. The longtime Lakers fan has limited his public appearances in recent years, but seeing his favorite team face off against the Memphis Grizzlies in playoff Game 6 led to him returning to the stadium. His appearance marked his first time at a game since October 2021, as reported by journalist Rachel Nichols.

Jack’s back! Oscar winner, Hollywood bad boy and Lakers superfan Jack Nicholson stepped out and took his rightful place courtside during Friday night’s playoff game. While the Lakers wiped the boards with the Memphis Grizzlies, the real draw was the appearance of Nicholson, who hasn’t been to a game since 2021.

To get the chance to make a movie of Judy Blume’s “Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,” producer James L. Brooks and writer and director Kelly Fremon Craig made the pilgrimage to the beloved author’s home in Key West, Fla.

I see where some tabloid published photos of Jack Nicholson looking 'disheveled.' It's almost as if the man is, you, know Eighty-five Years Old. He gave us iconic performances for 40 years. He's retired. Leave him the f*** alone.

Jack Nicholson’s fans are defending him on social media after the first sighting of the actor in 18 months.
In January, there had been reports that Nicholson’s friends were concerned for the actor’s wellbeing after he wasn’t seen in public for more than a year.
On Thursday (13 April), unflattering pictures of Nicholson, 85, were published in a British tabloid, showing him wearing an orange T-shirt and looking sleepy on the balcony of his Beverly Hills home.
“When you’re Jack Nicholson, 85, you can look however the f*** you want to look,” one fan tweeted.
“He’s 85. Why not leave Jack Nicholson alone?” added another.
A third posted: “Leave Jack Nicholson alone. He’s 85.”
“I looked like this when I woke up this morning… I’m 37,” wrote a fourth, while a fifth added: “Jack Nicholson is still alive. He’s 85. I identify with this look. This look is my spirit animal.

Reese Witherspoon once did an elevator pitch on a plane…literally.
The rom-com queen explained the entire plot of 2010 film “How Do You Know” to her fellow passengers after the in-flight movie player stalled.
“Back when they used to have one movie that played on airplanes, it was like a five-hour flight and I walk in and they’re like, ‘And the movie today is going to be “How Do You Know” starring Reese Witherspoon,'” she explained during “Late Night With Seth Meyers.”
“I was like, ‘Oh my God. I have nowhere to hide. This is so embarrassing,'” Witherspoon said, before revealing one perk. “Probably, maybe 10 minutes into the inflight movie, it cut out, and the clip broke. So I went to the front of the plane and I got on the microphone…I was like, ‘Hi, guys. I don’t think the movie’s coming back, so...

Reese Witherspoon once recapped the plot of her 2010 movie How Do You Know on a plane after the in-flight movie stopped working.
The actress and producer told Seth Meyers on Tuesday’s Late Night that she was once on a five-hour flight, during the time when there was one in-flight movie for the entire plane, and the film turned out to be How Do You Know.
After being embarrassed that her movie was being screened, she went on to embrace it when the film stopped playing shortly after it began.
“Probably, maybe 10 minutes into the in-flight movie, it cut out, and the clip broke or the tape broke or something,” Witherspoon recalled, saying that everyone on the plane appeared to be looking at her and whispering that she was on board.
So she went up to the front of the plane and asked the flight attendant if she could borrow the microphone.

It feels just like last month we were complimenting Hulu on its true crime offerings. Well, with its list of new releases for February 2023, Hulu is staying in the true crime lane. Suppose that’ll happen when you push back the release date of a series or two.
February sees the arrival of three notable true crime series on Hulu. Taiwan Crime Stories premieres on Feb. 1 and presents four true tales from Taiwan’s criminal “dark underbelly.” That will be followed by ABC News Studios’ Killing County on Feb. 3. That three-episode series ponders the question “what happens when police kill?” The most interesting true crime offering premieres on Feb. 9. That’s when Stolen Youth: Inside the Cult at Sarah Lawrence College shares its four-episode saga of Larry Ray and the young college students he victimized.

February can be a weird month. It’s too late to wish anyone “Happy New Year,” late enough to abandon resolutions, and too early to leave the house if you want to avoid getting caught in nasty weather (even in Los Angeles).
This month also marks the third and final season of Hulu’s widely acclaimed “Wu-Tang: An American Saga,” which charts the rise of the Wu-Tang clan over time. Season 3 catches up with the Wu-Tang members after their first album, facing divergent paths in the years that follow. As with any group navigating the challenging lure of fame and money, it’s a treacherous road — but an indelible journey. “Wu-Tang: An American Saga” Season 3 premieres February 15 on Hulu.
Here’s everything coming to Hulu in February 2023.

Jack Nicholson is missing in action. The star's last acting role was the 2010 rom com "How Do You Know," and aside from showing up in news stories about his personal life, he's seemingly done with the whole acting thing.
Since his last role, he's been heard to remark that his apparent retirement is down to the fact that he only wants to do "films that move people," and that he has a feeling that "maybe people in their twenties and thirties don't actually want to be moved anymore." In the age of the MCU and the general franchizification of movies, Nicholson seems to think that people want to see "more bombs" and "more explosions" and he's made clear he'll "never do that type of movie."
That all seems slightly at odds with his general reputation as a roguish trickster who can go from playing the murderous Jack in "The Shining,...

If you need any proof of the faulty decision-making exemplified by the Oscars, consider that they failed to give Amy Adams an Academy Award for her sterling work in the 2007 Disney fantasy "Enchanted." Adams' performance in "Enchanted," in which she delivered a true breakout-star turn as an animated princess brought into the real world who was forced to learn about how our world is a bit different than hers, is a genuine force of nature. Though Adams was not a true ingenue at that point, she revealed her immense depth in screwball comedy, romance, and drama in her role as Giselle of Andalasia. But as remarkable as the performance was, revisiting the role that made her an A-List star 15 years down the line is a true risk. Yet it's a delightful surprise that the Disney+ sequel, "Disenchanted," in spite of having a thudder of a title, is a moderately charming affair bolstered,...

This may sound a little strange, but I think we may underrate Jack Nicholson as an actor. Yes, he is obviously one of the most beloved actors in the history of cinema and has won three Academy Awards, but I feel like when we think about Jack Nicholson these days, we boil him down to one thing: He's the devilish scamp you do not want to be on the bad side of. He'll take on a role in "Batman" or "The Departed," and a lot of people would describe the performance as "Jack being Jack." While there's certainly an utterly unique energy present in all of his performances, his range of characters and tones sometimes gets overlooked or even forgotten by modern audiences.
For example, take the film for which he won his second Oscar: "Terms of Endearment." If you were to ask anyone to list Nicholson's signature performances, very few,...

This June on HBO and HBO Max will play host to a new season of “Westworld,” a new adaptation of “Father of the Bride” and much more.
The big new Warner Bros. release on HBO and HBO Max this month is “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore,” which actually debuted on the HBO Max streaming service on May 30. With its list of new releases for June 2022, HBO Max is joining in what should be a TV summer to remember.
Not content to let Netflix’s Stranger Things or Prime Video’s The Boys to dominate the summer TV landscape, HBO is coming through with a new season of one of its big hits. Westworld season 4 is set to premiere June 26 on both HBO and HBO Max. What will this season of the increasingly confusing sci-fi drama be about? Per HBO’s synopsis it will be “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” So you know, only that.
Irma Vep is the only other Max Original of note this month. Based on a 1996 cult classic of the same name, this limited series stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned movie star looking to remake the early 20th century French silent film serial Les Vampires.

Apple TV+ doesn’t lack for star-studded programming, but the streaming service is nonetheless raising the bar with its upcoming limited series, “The Shrink Next Door.” Apple unveiled the full series trailer, which stars Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Kathryn Hahn, and Casey Wilson, on Tuesday.

Jack Nicholson has had a long career playing brooding rebels, crazed villains and sneering charmers on screen. For his 80th birthday, we aimed to rank all of Jack’s major, already iconic roles, from worst to best.
“Man Trouble” (1992)
“Man Trouble” is a ridiculous screwball crime comedy in which Nicholson and Ellen Barkin get upstaged by horny dogs. It seems impossible the same guy who did “Five Easy Pieces” made this.
“A Safe Place” (1971)
This bizarre, formless ’70s relic based on a play stars Tuesday Weld and Orson Welles opposite Nicholson about a girl living a fantasy in which she never grows up.
“The Terror” (1963)
Nicholson gives a stiff performance in this Roger Corman picture opposite Boris Karloff, but he gets to kiss a woman who transforms into a corpse.

A new year means a new start. But in its list of new year releases for January 2021, Hulu is sending a message of…eh, we’ll get the year started in February. Not to be overly rude to the usually sturdy streaming service, but there’s not much going on for Hulu in 2021’s first month.
Perhaps the biggest release of note is something that already enjoyed a successful release for ITV in the U.K. The Sister is the lates thriller from Neil Cross (Luther) and it makes its U.S. debut on Hulu on Jan. 22. 2020 comedies Save Yourselves and Like a Boss both arrive on Jan. 1. Hulu is kicking off the new year in style next month, with January set to deliver a ton of fresh titles to the Disney-owned streaming service. There’s a bunch of original content landing throughout the first few weeks of 2021, but probably the highlight is the incredible number of classic movies that are going up on the site on New Year’s Day. Whether you’re in the mood for iconic comedies, dramas, animated efforts or sci-fi flicks, there’s something for you on the way.
There are well over 100 films being added to Hulu’s library on January 1st, so let’s just pick out a few notable titles. The full Austin Powers trilogy is among them, and if you can’t get enough of Mike Myers, the first Shrek likewise becomes available. For dramas, there’s Robert Downey Jr. biopic Chaplin, Johnny Depp vehicle Donnie Brasco and Jim Carrey’s The Truman Show.

Designed as a co-viewing experience for children and families, the special will stream on HBO Max and PBS Kids starting Thursday, October 15, and debut on PBS stations the same day (check local listings). The special will also re-air throughout October and November on PBS stations and the PBS Kids 24/7 channel (check local listings).
“Sesame Street has the ability to entertain children while explaining complex issues like no other program and equips families and caregivers with the support they need to have empathetic conversations,” said Kay Wilson Stallings, Executive Vice President of Creative and Production at Sesame Workshop. “We believe that this moment calls for a direct discussion about racism to help children...

Reese Witherspoon has sent her fans into a frenzy after sharing a throwback selfie of herself with Paul Rudd.
The 44-year-old actress took to her Instagram, where she shared a snap, from 1996, showing the two fresh-faced stars looking remarkably similar to their 2020 selves.
Reese Witherspoon appears to be in her 20s when the picture was taken as she stared into the camera while wearing bright red lipstick.
Rudd, 51, on the other hand would have been around 27 at the time of the photograph as he flashed a smile while leaning his head against Witherspoon’s.
“Wait a second… did #PaulRudd and I take the ‘Selfie’ in 1996?” she captioned her photo.

July was a big month for Netflix. Between new originals like The Old Guard, Fatal Affair, Desperados and more, not to mention classic films like Cloud Atlas, Total Recall and Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, to name just a few, there was lots for subscribers to get stuck into when it came to movies.
But what were the most-watched films on Netflix for the month? That’s a good question, and as it turns out, the most-watched title – when it comes to movies in the United States, at least – wasn’t even one of the ones mentioned above. No, it was actually an animated children’s flick from 2012 called The Lorax. And it wasn’t the only animated effort to make a strong showing, as Despicable Me placed in number 7.

Netflix‘s most-watched list has never been seen as a barometer of quality, but more of a snapshot of what subscribers are getting their kicks from at any given time. The streaming giant may be on a hot streak of acclaimed original projects that are racking up huge viewing numbers, but that doesn’t mean that they’re all going to be great movies.
For inexplicable reasons, Adam Sandler has remained one of Netflix’s most popular stars ever since he first signed an exclusive deal to churn out his unique brand of lowbrow comedy, with literally billions of hours spent watching his output. The Last Days of American Crime and 365 Dni recently found themselves nestled towards the top of the charts as well despite both holding a 0% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while Fatal Affair is the newest in-house movie to dominate the platform even though it was received with critical apathy.

When it comes to Netflix, the most talked about film right now has got to be The Old Guard. The action flick starring Charlize Theron is already a big hit for the streaming site and generating tons of buzz. But it’s not the only thing that’s got people tuning in.
Indeed, Netflix’s Top 10 movies list is currently being occupied by a whole bunch of different titles from all sorts of genres. And one of them happens to be a forgotten – and also somewhat underrated – Paul Rudd film. We’re talking about 2010’s How Do You Know, which is currently the 8th most popular movie on Netflix.
The romantic comedy sees Reese Witherspoon star as a softball player trying to make it onto the national team. She soon finds herself falling for two different men though – played by Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson – and is forced to choose between them.

Last week brought a huge haul of new titles to Netflix, what with it being the first week of a new month. As we head into the second week of July, then, the days aren’t bringing quite as much of an influx of fresh content, but today does see four new movies arrive on the streaming service, which are all hugely different from each other and so should cater to a wide variety of tastes.
First up, 2019’s The Kid From Coney Island has been added to Netflix’s library. The documentary explores the life and career of former NBA player Stephon Marbury, following his youth in – you guessed it – Coney Island to the fulfillment of his dreams of becoming a professional basketball player.

If you’re a Netflix subscriber, it’s highly unlikely you’re without content to watch, as the service has been pumping out excellent stuff for months. June saw the release of the fourth and final season of 13 Reasons Why, classics films like E.T. the Extraterrestrial and The Silence of the Lambs, and Spike Lee’s well-received Da 5 Bloods, among many, many others. July has been off to a wonderful start, too, as highlights include the epic Cloud Atlas finally making its way to the platform alongside horror favorites like Paranormal Activity and the very underrated Splice. But if that’s not enough, next week is bringing with it even more big titles to add to your list.
