In the decades following his early superstardom from his run on “Happy Days,” Henry Winkler carved out a niche for himself as a skilled character actor on irreverent comedies like “Arrested Development” and “Childrens Hospital.” But his acclaimed role as disgraced acting teacher Gene Cousineau on “Barry” brought him the biggest mainstream success of the second act of his career.
In a new interview on “Sunday Today with Willie Geist,” Winkler reflected on the success that he enjoyed during “Barry,” which won him a Primetime Emmy in 2018 followed by a nomination for each of the show’s three subsequent seasons. He explained that his decision to work with a psychiatrist before the show began helped him access the depths of emotion that he needed for the role.

Now that Quibi ended up lasting, well, a Quibi, the Emmy Awards’ short form categories seem further destined to become more of a curiosity than a major part of the competition. Roku picked up Quibi’s scraps, but doesn’t appear interested in launching new originals in the short-form space. And elsewhere, outlets including YouTube are bulking up in unscripted, but are less keen on adding more scripted, short form or not, to an already crowded marketplace.
The Television Academy first expanded the short form categories in 2016, buoyed by the promise of original fare from Maker Studios, Fullscreen, AwesomenessTV, YouTube Red, Adult Swim and others. Maker and Fullscreen basically don’t exist anymore, and the excitement of the short form races has perhaps further cooled after the Quibi debacle.
But although the Quibi business model was questionable, its programming wasn’t. The service premiered quite a bit of quality fare in its short life,...

When Liz Meriwether launched “New Girl” on Fox in 2011, she didn’t think anyone would still be talking about the show a decade later. But 10 years after “New Girl” premiered and only three years after it concluded its run, it is seeing a lucrative second life thanks to streaming deals. The renewed interest in the show, coupled with its special anniversary, resulted in a reunion panel during Variety’s Virtual TV Fest.
“The central friendship and central love stories do hold up, at least for now, and I think that’s what people are responding to,” Meriwether says of the audience that has found the show via streaming.
“New Girl” premiered to big ratings (almost 10.3 million total live viewers) but then dropped week to week, which meant Meriwether “never felt satisfaction with the numbers,” she admits now. “Every week we would get our ratings for the week and hear feedback and,...

Before the world changed and Americans were asked to stay at home to “flatten the curve” and prevent the spread of the coronavirus pandemic, “Medical Police” co-creator Rob Corddry and star Rob Huebel shared some of their TV picks — both high- and low-brow — for Variety.
For the second episode of Variety’s “My Guilty Pleasure,” Corddry and Huebel sat down with senior editor Michael Schneider to reveal their (1) TV guilty pleasure; (2) the “deep cut” show you probably haven’t heard of but they recommend; and (3) their “show-mate” — in other words, the TV series neither of them could live without.
“Medical Police,” now streaming on Netflix, is the successor to beloved medical drama parody “Childrens Hospital.” This time, the show is inadvertently timely: it’s a medical cop spy drama set amid the spread of a potentially world-threatening virus.

I've always had a soft spot for half-hour comedies. Whether it's Seinfeld or Schitt's Creek, there's something intensely comforting about watching a group of characters crack jokes and overcome challenges in a tight 22 minutes. Now that we find ourselves universally in need of something warm and fuzzy, I have a recommendation for a show that's gone painfully under the radar for too long: Bless This Mess on ABC. If you just came here looking for a recommendation, there it is. Go watch it on Hulu now. If you need more convincing, read on.
Bless This Mess kicked off on ABC during the Spring TV season last year, meaning it didn't get the mega-marketing push that is granted to a lot of Fall TV releases. It's a fish-out-of-water story starring Dax Shepard and Lake Bell as Mike and Rio, two New Yorkers who move to Nebraska to take over the farm once managed by Mike's family.

Oliver Hudson and Malin Akerman have been cast in two of the lead roles in the CBS comedy pilot “The Three of Us,” Variety has learned.
The multi-camera comedy follows adult siblings who are children of divorce who must circle the wagons when their sister’s husband unexpectedly announces he wants to call it quits on their marriage.
Hudson will star as Will. Described as the worrier in the family, Will has always been protective of his little brother (not yet cast) and sister, Ally (Malin Akerman). Clever and perceptive, Will has a problematic need to help “father” everyone around him, so when his sister’s husband dumps her, his instincts kick in and moves her into his house.
Akerman’s Ally is said to be smart and resilient. She is the middle sibling to two brothers. She is thought of as the most “normal” and sensible one in the family,...

ABC has given a pilot order to Home Economics, a single-camera family comedy from writers Michael Colton and John Aboud (Penguins Of Madagascar), Lionsgate TV and Eric and Kim Tannenbaum’s studio-based Tannenbaum Company.
Written by Colton and Aboud, Home Economics is about three adult siblings: one in the 1 percent, one middle-class, and one barely holding on.
The project, inspired by Colton’s family, was originally set up at Fox last development season with a script commitment plus penalty. ABC bought the comedy on spec, with ABC Studios coming on board to co-produce alongside Lionsgate. (Fox Entertainment likely retains a small piece.) Colton and Aboud executive produce with Kim and Eric Tannenbaum of The Tannenbaum Company, whose Jason Wang is co-executive producer. Lionsgate Television’s Maxfield Elins will oversee the series on behalf of the studio.
At ABC, Home Economics joins single-camera comedy pilots Work Wife and Prospect and multi-camera My Village.

Colton and Aboud executive produce with Kim and Eric Tannenbaum of The Tannenbaum Company, whose Jason Wang is co-executive producer. Lionsgate Television’s Maxfield Elins will oversee the series on behalf of the studio.
At ABC, Home Economics joins single-camera comedy pilots Work Wife and Prospect and multi-camera My Village.

Normally, describing a show by saying that it flings everything it can against the wall is not a compliment. With “Medical Police,” it’s some of the highest praise you can give it. The latest comedy series from the braintrust behind the long-running “Childrens Hospital,” this new venture takes a pair of that show’s mainstays and thrusts them into the world of high-stakes international infectiology.
When a deadly virus is unleashed in various major metropolitan areas around the world, doctors Lola Spratt (Erinn Hayes) and Owen Maestro (Rob Huebel) become the only two people with the knowledge, skills, and disregard for conventions of storytelling to be able to thwart this evil plan.
That’s about as tenuous a setup as a show like this really needs. When they’re not sticking to the CBS procedural-adjacent throughline of the series, “Medical Police” has free license to indulge in as many...

We chat with Erinn Hayes and Rub Huebel, the stars of Netflix’s bonkers Childrens Hospital spin-off, Medical Police.
Adult Swim has been the home for many influential pieces of alternative comedy, but Childrens Hospital is a series that helped the fledgling network establish their brand. The Dadaist comedy helped bring live-action to the programming block as well as an enviable cast and crew of comedic talent.
Childrens Hospital was a jewel in Adult Swim’s line-up for the seven seasons that it ran. However, the series has decided to gloriously return in the form of a police procedural parody series on Netflix, Medical Police. Medical Police retains the absurdity of Childrens Hospital, but gives it a glossy action makeover and makes Drs. Owen Maestro (Rob Huebel) and Lola Spratt (Erinn Hayes) the series’ driving forces. “We’re American doctors.”
“And apparently also now cops.”
“It’s a big concept we’re still wrapping our heads around.”
We live in an age of reboots, remakes, legacy sequels, and a time where the price of nostalgia has never been higher. Medical Police, a Netflix spinoff to Adult Swim’s Childrens Hospital technically subscribes to that trend, but it’s more concerned with having fun and making you laugh than it is in reviving a dormant franchise. If you liked Childrens Hospital, then you’ll love Medical Police. This series may be the continuation of a cult comedy that perhaps wasn’t being asked for, but it’s still extremely worthwhile and just so much fun to have...

No stars, no problem — that may not be the official tagline for “Little America,” but it’s certainly the ethos guiding Lee Eisenberg, Kumail Nanjiani, and Emily Gordon’s new series to success. Absent the big names and stripped of the grand scale tied to every Apple launch title, these eight standalone episodes are inspired by true stories of individual immigrants and their accomplishments in America. Every episode has a new cast, writer, and director; every episode offers a new point of view; not every episode is capital-g “Great!” but they’re all at least, “Pretty good!” Together, they make for a heartwarming, engaging, and informative season — all by focusing on story first, rather than famous faces or bottom lines.
Though episodes tell their own stories, the creative trio listed above serve as the roadmap through “Little America,” plus Sian Heder, who’s an E.P. and co-showrunner with Eisenberg.

Last month Netflix released the official trailer for the Childrens Hospital “spin-off”, titled Medical Police. Fans need not worry, the twisted comedy looks to be just as outlandish as the original series. We even catch a glimpse of Rob Corddry in his clown makeup as Dr. Blake Downs. The new installment catches up with Dr. Lola Splatt and Dr. Owen Maestro, who are now down in Brazil and find themselves embroiled in a thrilling adventure of hysterical proportions. With this new adventure, comes a new score by Childrens Hospital composer Matt Novack. Having worked with these creators and characters for

The trailer for Netflix’s new series “Medical Police” is out, and it stars Erinn Hayes and Rob Huebel as a couple of “cool, crime-fighting doctors.” At least that’s what Jason Schwartzman calls them in the trailer, which also features lots of gun-slinging and awkward moments. Watch the video above.

Netflix has set the premiere date for its “Childrens Hospital” spinoff series “Medical Police,” a show about cops who are doctors — at the same time. Impressive, right?
The comedy — which comes from the creators of the cult Adult Swim series and is “building on the legacy of its predecessor” while tripling “as an action-packed thriller, a mystery-wrapped love story and, ultimately, a globetrotting comedy series” — will launch on the streaming service Jan. 10.

Another month, another smattering of new Netflix titles to sift through. And it seems the online streamer is kicking off 2020 with a host of juicy horror movies and TV shows.
First thing’s first: there’s a number of big-name titles leaving the service next month, including Panic Room, Grease, American Pyscho, and the Spartacus series. That’s disappointing, to be sure, but among the January 2020 titles are news installments of Grace and Frankie and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, along with all three Lord of the Rings movies and the Kill Bill films. And it doesn’t stop there.
We’ve compiled the full list below, but a special mention must go to two particularly exciting horror additions: Sam Raimi classic The Evil Dead and Tremors.

Ghost Stories (Netflix Film): Short films from Indian directors behind “Bombay Talkies” and “Lust Stories.”

Best known as Rhoda, Valerie Harper started as a dancer and never left the stage behind.
Valerie Harper, whose Rhoda Morgenstern character is an icon of television, died on Friday August 30, eight days after her 80th birthday.
"My dad has asked me to pass on this message," Harper’s daughter Cristina Cacciotti, confirmed on Twitter. “'My beautiful caring wife of nearly 40 years has passed away at 10:06 a.m., after years of fighting cancer. She will never, ever be forgotten. Rest In Peace, mia Valeria. -Anthony.'”
The Emmy winning actor was battling lung and brain cancer, according to Variety. When her brain cancer was first diagnosed in January 2013, Harper was told she had three months to live. Valerie Harper was a fighter, and that may ultimately be her Hollywood legacy. That was true with her career, and also in her 10-year battle with lung cancer. Harper will forever be best known for playing Rhoda Morgenstern, her “Mary Tyler Moore Show” character that earned the actress four Emmys and was later spun off into an entirely separate series, “Rhoda.”
But just like Rhoda, the spunky, wise-cracking best friend of Moore’s Mary Richards, Harper didn’t back down from a fight. In Hollywood, Harper will perhaps be most remembered for standing her ground on the NBC sitcom “Valerie.”
The comedy, which starred Harper as the matriarch of a nuclear family living in Illinois, and grappling with typical life problems, launched in 1986 and eventually became a hit for the Peacock network. But that harmony was short-lived: Harper was fired from the show after its second season, however, following her salary dispute with Lorimar,...

Netflix has put in an eight-episode order of “Brews Brothers,” a comedy series from creative sibling team Greg Schaffer and Jeff Schaffer.
The show follows estranged brothers Wilhelm and Adam Rodman, who wind up running a brewery together. According to Netflix, each is a “beer genius … but they couldn’t be more different in their beer-making techniques and personalities. A lot of times in a show you see two people who complete each other. These two don’t even make a full person.”
Alan Aisenberg and Mike Castle will play Wilhelm and Adam, respectively. Carmen Flood has been tapped to play Sarah, while Marques Ray will play Chuy.
Greg Schaffer of “That 70’s Show,” “Notes From the Underbelly” and “Lab Rats” will serve as showrunner, executive producer and writer.

As the TV landscape continues to expand across various cable and streaming services, filmmakers are finding a wide variety of ways to tell stories — sometimes multiple times in a single season. Such is the case for Stephen Frears, who this year is an Emmy contender for a long form series (“A Very English Scandal”) and a short form series (SundanceTV’s “State of the Union”).
Frears is best known for his work on the big screen, where he has directed films including “Dangerous Liaisons” (1988), “High Fidelity” (2000), “Philomena” (2013) and “Florence Foster Jenkins” (2016). He earned Oscar nominations for directing “The Grifters” (1990) and “The Queen” (2006). But he’s no stranger to TV, having won two BAFTAs out of seven nominations for his work on the small screen.

“The Daily Show” has exploded the careers of its correspondents over the years. Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee, John Oliver, Wyatt Cenac, Hasan Minhaj and more became stars thanks in large part to their work as fake newsmen and newswomen on the series. But they have never been recognized for their work on-screen. That could change this year because “The Daily Show” has finally entered its correspondents for consideration — as guest actors.
Two women are in the running for Best Comedy Guest Actress for the show: Desi Lydic and Dulce Sloan. And four men are up for consideration for Best Comedy Guest Actor: Ronny Chieng, Michael Kosta, Roy Wood Jr. and Jaboukie Young-White. The chief requirement to be considered as guest actors at the Emmys is to appear in less than 50% of all eligible episodes. “The Daily Show” airs four nights a week, so even though its correspondents probably...
