A new era of the B-movie was born in the 1950s. While the term originally referred to the second film in a double feature that defined much of the moviegoing experience during the Golden Age of Hollywood, a 1948 landmark Supreme Court antitrust ruling against major studios’ monopolistic practices upended the way films were distributed. While the traditional double feature waned, the demands of the burgeoning drive-in theater market gave way to the rise in independent genre films.
Two such low-budget B-movies made a mark in 1959: The Giant Gila Monster and The Killer Shrews. Produced by radio broadcasting magnate Gordon McLendon and future Gunsmoke actor Ken Curtis, the sci-fi horror movies were shot back-to-back in under three months with much of the same crew before being distributed together.
Both films are directed by Ray Kellogg, who had no prior directing experience, but his visual effects work on the likes of...

The musician and visual artist Jean Dawson is consistently viral — clips of his wide-ranging and somewhat existential interviews have a way of multiplying on social feeds — and yet remains a genuine enigma. Growing up, the 26-year-old artist split his time between Tijuana and San Diego near the border. His mother is of Mexican descent and his father is Black, and he says he drew early inspiration both from hip-hop and Latin music. Generally, though, Dawson prefers to eschew simple categorization. Recently, he stopped by Rolling Stone’s offices ahead of...

This generation of filmgoers mostly probably thinks of Irish actor-director Kenneth Branagh as Agatha Christie’s mustachioed detective Hercule Poirot in Murder on the Orient Express (2017), Death on the Nile (2022) and the upcoming A Haunting in Venice.
But there is so much more to Branagh’s career. As a director, he’s dabbled in multiple genres, including fantasy, action, science fiction, thriller, comedy and superhero.
Branaghs career as an actor has been equally as diverse. He’s acted in legal thrillers, Westerns, romantic thrillers, animation, fantasy pics and dramedies.
And then there’s Shakespeare. There’s always Shakespeare. Branagh has a self-professed love of the Bard. He’s acted in and directed...

January Jones took aim at virtual auditions on Saturday, writing on her Instagram story, “Note to Hollywood: It’s time for casting directors to come back into the office like everyone else. To audition actors in person.”
The “Mad Men” star continued, “And if anyone asks for a Fee to audition please know that this is criminal and Pathetic. I personally have had to self tape several times since the pandemic began and there is zero benefit to it for anyone involved. It’s time consuming, expensive, and a drag to whomever you have to drag in to read with you (sorry Mom), and is often done with zero direction/notes.”
Since the pandemic, self-tapes have remained a common way for actors to audition for roles, rather than auditioning live in front of casting directors.

When the 2003 Christmas classic Love Actually entered the world, it was like a stuffed stocking, filled to the brim with some of Britain’s greatest actors.
From Hugh Grant and Emma Thompson to Alan Rickman, it attracted some of the best performers of the era.
The film also launched the careers of Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Olivia Olson, who were children when they starred in the romcom.
It’s been almost 20 years since Richard Curtis’s film was released, and they’ve all been very busy since then.
Some of the stars of the movie have gone on to work with Curtis again, while others have had huge franchise roles or become synonymous with certain characters, like Martin Freeman’s Dr John Watson in Sherlock.
Here’s a rundown on the Love Actually cast’s varied careers, from 2003 to now…

After years of development, “The Sandman” has arrived. Neil Gaiman’s beloved graphic novel series now exists as a Netflix series, with Gaiman serving as co-creator and executive producer on the show. Many fans weren’t sure if this day would ever come given how difficult Gaiman’s books are to adapt, with “The Sandman” at one point planned as a movie to be directed by and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt.
Tom Sturridge fills the titular role in this iteration of the story, which finds Dream imprisoned for a century and busting out to find his kingdom in ruins. He then sets out on a journey that puts him in contact with friends and foes alike, learning to better understand humanity in the process.
With a stacked ensemble cast, here’s your complete “The Sandman” cast and character guide. The series is now streaming on Netflix.

Picturehouse Entertainment has launched a teaser trailer for the upcoming feature film from Reggie Yates, ‘Pirates.’
Set in London at the turn of the millennium, Pirates will take audiences on a hilarious journey back to New Year’s Eve 1999, reviving memories from the 90’s garage scene and Moschino fashion for pure nostalgic cinematic joy.
Written and directed by Reggie Yates, the film stars relative newcomers Elliot Edusah, Jordan Peters and Reda Elazouar (Outside the Wire) in the leading roles as three best mates, Cappo, Two Tonne and Kidda, trying to break into the music scene through Pirate radio. The film follows the boys as they drive through London in their tiny Peugeot pumping a live garage set from the stereo and arguing about their Avirex jackets and Naf Naf imports. As the eighteen-year-olds step into adulthood, they know their lives and friendships are on the brink of change. Determined to...

"To change the world, you've got to risk a little." Netflix has unveiled an official trailer for an indie Italian film titled Rose Island, from filmmaker Sydney Sibilia (of the I Can Quit Whenever I Want series). This reminds me of the UK film Pirate Radio about the ship broadcasting in international waters, or about the party-on-a-homemade-raft experiment examined in the doc The Raft. An idealistic engineer builds his own island off the Italian coast and declares it a nation, drawing the world's attention. Values are tested when the Italian government declares him an enemy, but to change the world risks must be taken. This has a more light-hearted, comedic tone to it in addition to its let's-take-on-the-Italian-government boldness. Starring Elio Germano as Giorgio Rosa, Fabrizio Bentivoglio, Tom Wlaschiha, Luca Zingaretti, François Cluzet, Matilda De Angelis, & Ascanio Balbo. This looks like a good story and a fun film! Take a look.

Seen at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival. Who doesn't love The Beatles? Wait – don't answer that question. But seriously - The Beatles are the best and their music will live on forever because it's so brilliant. Danny Boyle's latest film Yesterday, featuring a screenplay written by Richard Curtis, presents a crazy concept: what if suddenly The Beatles didn't exist, no one know who they were, except for one guy. And that guy then played all their songs like they were his own and became famous because they're still brilliant songs. That's the setup for Yesterday, except, this is a Richard Curtis film – which means that, not only is it actually more of a sweet love story, but it's really all about life itself and focusing on what matters rather than giving it up chasing fame and fortune and glory. Just not worth it. Boyle's Yesterday is an immensely awkward film.

Here’s a phrase I do not recall from Kingsman: The Secret Service: “independent intelligence agency.” This is uttered in Kingsman: The Golden Circle in connection with the American counterpart to Kingsman: Statesman, to which we are introduced here. I have a vague recollection of Secret Service mentioning something about Kingsman being funded by the crown heads of Europe, which at least offers a veneer of governmental authority and fealty to law and order — though of course there...

Preacher is one of my favorite series currently running on TV and it's going to be released on Blu-ray and DVD October 4.
The first season takes a while to get going, mostly because of character development but it really gets going. Lots of gore and is damned hilarious in spots. Very interesting characters as well. Can't wait for season 2. Read more about the upcoming release below.
From the Press Release
Based on the popular 1990s cult comic book series of the same name, the critically-acclaimed Preacher: Season One arrives on Blu-ray™ and DVD October 4 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The darkly comedic, hard-hitting, supernatural thrill-ride follows Texas preacher Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper, TV’s “Agent Carter,” Captain America: The First Avenger) who, after a supernatural event at his church, is thrust into a crazy world populated by a cast of characters from Heaven, Hell and everywhere in between.

British crowdfunded films that sound brilliant, including a Ghostbusters documentary and loads of horror...
It's not easy to get an indie film made these days. Especially not through studios and traditional financial methods. That's why, all around the globe, crowdfunding websites like Kickstarter are becoming more and more popular among first-time/early career filmmakers.
We perused crowdfunding websites, and found loads of in-development British films that sound really interesting. Aiming to shed some light on these films that don't have the might of a major studio's marketing team behind them, here's our list of 25 upcoming British movies that have been crowdfunded, and could turn out to be brilliant...

Looks like the main cast of AMC's upcoming Preacher pilot just got a little bigger. British talent Tom Brooke has nabbed a series regular role on the show as 'Fiore', one of two Adelphi angels tasked with watching the half-demon, half-angelic creature named 'Genesis'. The show, currently being developed for TV by This Is The End duo Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, is based on Garth Ennis & Steve Dillion's 90s comic book series of the same name. Brooke joins a cast that so far includes Agent Carter's Dominic Cooper in the lead as 'Jesse Custer', Ruth Negga (Agents Of Shield) as his ex 'Tulip' and Joseph Gilgun (Misfits) as an Irish vampire named 'Cassidy'. A relative unknown, Brooke may seem familiar to Game Of Thrones fans, having portrayed one of Walder Frey's spawn back in Season 3. He has also guest starred on Sherlock, and in British comedy, The Boat That Rocked.

Tom Brooke – seen in Sherlock and Game Of Thrones – has landed an angelic role in AMC’s adaptation of the Preacher comic book…
With the pilot episode of Preacher currently shooting, we’re assuming this is news that AMC has known for a while, but has only just chosen to announce. Regardless, it’s still nice to report that Tom Brooke is joining the show.
Mr Brooke is an English actor, who made a big impression as Bill ‘Wiggie’ Wiggins (Sherlock’s drug-loving sidekick, with an eye for his own deductions) in 2014 Sherlock episode His Last Vow.
That was hardly his first rodeo, though, he also played Lothar Frey in season 3 of Game Of Thrones. He’s also appeared in pretty much every British crime-based show going, including Ripper Street, Lewis, Foyle’s War, Hustle and Thieves Like Us. He also appeared in cinematic comedies Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason...

Ridiculously romantic in all the best ways, and more modern, more progressive, and even just plain more grownup that half the movies thrown at us today. I’m “biast” (pro): love the cast; desperate for stories about women
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
I have read the source material (but not since high school and have no strong memory of it)

This is not an gentlemanly movie.
Now, most movies are not very gentlemanly, and this isn’t necessarily a problem — except, perhaps, to those of us who lament the passing of true gentlemanliness as a thing a dude might aspire to. But it’s a honking huge problem forKingsman: The Secret Service. Oscar winning composer Steven Price (Gravity) scores Columbia Pictures’ World War II epic Fury, in theaters October 17th, 2014. The film will be closing the 58th BFI London Film Festival this year.
Directed by David Ayer, Fury stars Brad Pitt as “Wardaddy,” a Sherman tank commander who must guide his men into the heart of Nazi Germany during the last month of World War II. The film features a star-studded cast, including Shia LeBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña and Jon Bernthal. Fresh off of his Oscar win for Gravity’s high-energy, out-of-this-world score, Price strikes a musical balance with an emotionally resonant, action-packed score for Fury.
The Fury Original Motion Picture Soundtrack will be available on Varèse Sarabande Records October 14th, 2014.
Steven Price was drawn to Fury in the script stages, sensing the power of the characters and their plight, and how it portrays the heroism of World War II veterans.

Judi Dench is set to play Cecily, Duchess of York opposite Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role of The BBC's upcoming TV adaptation of Shakespeare's "Richard III".
The telemovie will be part of the second series of "The Hollow Crown," following on from 2012's successful four telemovie adaptations of Shakespeare's historical plays. That series, starring the likes of Jeremy Irons, Tom Hiddleston and Ben Whishaw, adapted "Richard II," "Henry IV Part 1," "Henry IV Part 2" and "Henry V".
"The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses" will adapt the other famed historical tetralogy of Shakespeare - the three parts of "Henry VI" and "Richard III". One difference this time out is that the telemovies will be trilogy with "Henry VI" being shrunk from a three-part play into a two-part telemovie.
Tom Sturridge ("On the Road," "The Boat That Rocked") has been cast as Henry VI in both parts of that production.

It’s been nearly six months since Philip Seymour Hoffman died of a heroin overdose, and yet his presence is still heavily felt throughout Hollywood. In addition to a lengthy and acclaimed filmography, the Academy Award winner kept up a busy work schedule until the time of his death. He had three films slated for 2014 release: John Slattery‘s directorial debut, God’s Pocket, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1, and A Most Wanted Man. With the latter hitting theaters today, we thought we’d give you a look every Psh film currently available for your streaming pleasure. Whether as cynical music writer Lester Bangs in Almost Famous or hopelessly lonely boom mic operator Scott J. in Boogie Nights, Hoffman managed to steal the scene in each one of his films. If you have a Netflix account, log in and get caught up on some of the greatest performances in the last 20 years.

The 3rd July 2013 saw the release of Disney's The Lone Ranger, its larger-than-life western starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer. Its theatrical debut marked the end of a lengthy and difficult production, stories from which had been hungrily served up by the media - the previous summer was dominated by news stories of its spiralling budget, which was thought to have crossed $250m. Nevertheless, the 2013 blockbuster season should, in theory, have marked a fresh start for Disney, as it spent a reported $150m on marketing The Lone Ranger. But the House of Mouse hadn't counted on the popularity of another film launched on that exact same day in July: Universal's animated sequel, Despicable Me 2.

Ahead of the home entertainment release of Cuban Fury this week, HeyUGuys sat down with its star Nick Frost – who also came up with the idea for the film – about any memorable reactions, mementos from the set, improvised scenes and more…
The film has obviously been out for a while now. Has there been any reaction that has been particularly memorable?
I think people had lots and lots of Twitter traffic from people saying that dancing had broken out in screenings and people saying that there’d been a flash mob of salsa dancers! Is there a deeper meaning about aesthetic beauty in the film? Maybe, but essentially the film is about love and dancing. If even a thousand people came out of that cinema feeling happy, it’s a win.

Fox is taking a risk with a unique teen based show, Red Band Society. The show will follow a group of teen who live at the pediatric ward of Ocean Park Hospital. It will follow their laughter and struggles, along with the staff who work with the kids. The show will certainly hold laughter and tears, but should hit all of the right notes for everyone. You can check out the trailer for the series that premiers this fall down below. Here is the official description for the series.
What if a hospital was your high school, boarding school and summer camp rolled into one? What if it was the place where you fell in love for the first time and made friendships that lasted a lifetime? And what if it was all weirdly hilarious and the most fun you ever had in your entire life? This is the world of Red Band Society.

The idea for About Time came from a conversation that director Richard Curtis (Pirate Radio, Love Actually) had with a friend about what they would do if they were told that they had only 24 hours left to live. … Continue reading →

Actor and director who could imbue the many wretches, prigs and braggarts he played with a wrenching humanity
Philip Seymour Hoffman, who has died aged 46 of a suspected drugs overdose, had three names and 3,000 ways of expressing anxiety. He was a prolific and old-fashioned character actor, which is not a euphemism for "odd" – it means he could nail a part in one punch, summoning the richness of an entire life in the smallest gesture. And, yes, he could also look splendidly odd, with his windbeaten thatch of sandy hair, porcine eyes and a freckled face that would glow puce and glossy with rage. His acting style was immune to the temptations of caricature. His rise in the 1990s coincided with the emergence of a new wave of American film-makers, and his versatile, volatile talent became integral to some of the most original Us cinema of the past 20 years.

★★★☆☆Touted as the final film in British filmmaker Richard Curtis' sparse directorial career, About Time (2013) is his third and perhaps most considered feature: a sci-fi-inflected romantic comedy that very much slots into - but arguably attempts to depart from - the storytelling techniques Curtis has become known for. Typically schmaltzy, optimistic and sincere, this third outing bypasses the near-total worthlessness of sophomore feature The Boat That Rocked (2009) and returns to the relentlessness of Love Actually (2003), where life's simplicities were easily ironed out and romance was romanticised all out of proportion.

When People asked Twitter and Facebook users what their favorite Philip Seymour Hoffman movie was, the result was pretty unequivocal: Twister. That gave us pause, but then we started thinking about some of the actor's less-valued films. Even when the film might not have been great, Hoffman always was. Twister (1996) Someone so loved Hoffman's Dusty from this film that they created a tribute video to him. Would it be a stretch to call his performance the best thing about Twister? Probably not. Pirate Radio (2009) A heavily fictionalized account of the "pirate radio" ships broadcasting then-banned rock and roll to England in the 1960s,...

It’s with a very heavy heart that we begin this week’s Movie News Cheat Sheet with the news that Philip Seymour Hoffman has died of an apparent drug overdose. As reported by the New York Times, Hoffman was found in his West Village apartment at about 11:30am with a syringe in his arm. He was clean for 23 years, but just last year did admit to “falling off the wagon.” Hoffman’s got an Academy Award and a slew of unforgettable titles to his name, but personally, the standouts will always be “Twister” and “Pirate Radio,” “Twister” having been a film I grew up with and still watch repeatedly and “Pirate [ Read More ]
