If you know anything about K-dramas, you've seen Crash Landing on You. The 2019 show, which focuses on a love story between a South Korean heiress and a North Korean officer, broke all ratings records and became the highest-rated Tvn series based on the national index.
It has remained at the top of the charts for years, but has now succumbed to the latest K-drama with a premise that is much more relatable to many people. After the finale of Queen of Tears, no one doubted that this drama would go down in the history of the industry with so much praise and recognition.

Long gone are the days of K-dramas being an obscure guilty pleasure. Shows coming out of South Korea have become a phenomenon of their own, attracting legions of loyal fans who eagerly anticipate their next watch — in fact, more than 60% of all Netflix members watched Korean titles last year.
If you’ve already dipped your toes in the world of K-dramas, you’d probably know this, but if you haven’t, word to the wise: Once you watch one, you can’t stop. You know that Squid Game and Kingdom are must-watches, and maybe your romance-obsessed friend also recommended Crash Landing on You, but if you’re looking for more, we’ve got you covered.
Whether you need a good laugh, a good cry, or a bite-sized offering for a sleepless night, K-dramas have it all. With new Korean series continually being added to Netflix’s lineup, there’s plenty to choose from.

Sometimes the romances that are the most narratively interesting follow the creative path less traveled. While there’s a reason certain romantic tropes exist in Korean dramas — rivals-turned-lovers, fake relationships, and tension-filled love triangles are just a few of the go-tos — there’s a certain satisfaction that comes with watching characters fall in love in unexpected ways or under unique circumstances.
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with going the traditional K-romance route, especially for Valentine’s Day. Swoonworthy dramas like King the Land, Crash Landing on You, and Business Proposal are worthy of binge viewing if you’re in the mood for the classics. But if you’re looking for heart-fluttering love stories that venture outside the box, are a little left of center or feature leads that challenge norms, there’s plenty for you too.

It's not the first time that internationally acclaimed maestro Hirokazu Koreeda put his effort on a serial drama. In 2019 he directed the first episode and coordinated the collective show “A Day-Off of Kasumi Arimura” and before that, in 2012, he directed the lovely (a personal favourite) “Going My Home”, starring Hiroshi Abe as a clumsy father struggling with his roles as son and as father too. However, his recent “The Makanai: Cooking for the Maiko House” has been propelled to global audience by the intervention of giant platform Netflix. The show is co-written, co-produced and co-directed by Koreeda, alongside a handful of Japanese filmmakers and is based on a famous manga of the same title that has sold more than 1.8 million copies in Japan.

Netflix just gave entertainment analysts an early Christmas present. For the first time, the streamer has shared a program-by-program breakdown of its traffic. The What We Watched report lists the viewership received by more than 18,000 shows and movies during the first half of 2023.
What We Watched represents a major reversal for Netflix, which was previously tight-lipped when it came to specific viewership figures. Instead of sticking to that policy, the entertainment innovator is providing the public with the same data it uses to evaluate its programming.
The advent of the What We Watched report can be partially attributed to the recent WGA and SAG strikes, which turned streamers like Netflix into Hollywood boogeymen. Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos told Variety that viewership data was a prominent topic of discussion during the entertainment industry negotiations, but the strikes were not the “main factor” leading to the release of What We Watched.

The successful distribution of Korean media around the world has led to the celebration of brilliant filmmakers like Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho. However, if you ask an American cinephile or film critic to name one Korean woman director they would likely not be able to come up with an answer.
With its ongoing series “A New Wave of K-Cinema: Korean Women Directors,” The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is hoping to change that. Across the month of June, the Los Angeles museum is showing 10 contemporary Korean films made by women that “explore the complexities of diverse conditions, including the trauma of domestic violence, investigations into gender and class politics, humanity’s relation to nature and the environment, and love and friendship.”

Is it time for South Korea’s TV drama series to move over and make way for Korean unscripted entertainment — namely game shows and reality shows?
While 2003 drama series “Jewel in the Palace,” or the more recent “Crash Landing on You,” “Memories of the Alhambra,” “Mr. Queen,” “Love (ft. Marriage and Divorce)” and “Descendants of the Sun” have for years successfully tugged at emotional heartstrings across Asia, the unscripted category has equally long been a staple of Korean domestic TV.
Korean variety shows have been a catch-all with multi-generational appeal. Talent contests have worked well in the home market, but often were too quirky — too much dialogue, or distracting titles flashing across the screen — which meant that they were best exported as formats rather than finished shows.
Examples of those include Mbc’s 2015 hit “King of Mask Singer,” which became “The Masked Singer” for Fox in the U.S. (and...

Netflix has developed more than a list of riveting and well-received K-dramas over the years. But one K-drama that has fans and professionals still raving is Alchemy of Souls. Helmed by the Hong Sisters, the fantasy K-drama interweaved magic, destiny, friendship, treacherous danger, and a fated love story. Disney+ is boosting its growing K-drama slate with Han River Police, an action comedy series starring Kwon Sang-woo (Stairway to Heaven, Curtain Call) and Kim Hee-won (Netflix’s Unlocked).
Kwon will star as Han Dujin, the hot-tempered sergeant of the Han River Police Force who holds back for nobody, while Kim plays Lee Chunseok, a laid-back lieutenant with the exact opposite personality. Stuck together on patrol of Seoul’s Han River, the two officers are faced with emergency situations ranging from terrorism to everyday accidents and other incidents requiring emergency assistance — a premise that suggests all of the action, humor and offbeat crime-solving of the classic buddy cop genre.
Disney hasn’t released additional casting info for the show, but local news outlet Korea JoongAng Daily reports that Shin Hyeon-seung (So Not Worth It), Lee Sang-yi (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha) and Bae Da-bin (Gangnam Beauty) will co-star as other cops on the Han River Police force.

Cj Enm and Scott Sternberg Productions have agreed a deal under which popular Korean lifestyle show “Get it Beauty” will be adapted for the U.S. market.
The move dials into a growing wave of international success for Korean unscripted TV shows, following on from earlier success for Korean scripted dramas such as “Squid Game” and “Crash Landing on You.” It also amplifies the growing reach of Korean beauty standards and the cosmetic brands that support them.
“Get it Beauty” has run for 18 seasons in Korea since launching in 2006. It is hosted by three beauty icons, who invite beauty specialists such as physical trainers, hairdressers, and make-up artists into the studio to demonstrate their expertise to a live studio audience who actively participate in the tutorials. It has made stars of some of the specialists and catapulted some products to commercial success – it awards a mark of commendation to products coming top in its tests.

“Broker,” the unconventional family drama which appeared in competition at last month’s Cannes Film Festival, topped the box office in South Korea on Wednesday, its opening day.
“Broker” grossed 1.10 million, enough to depose crime actioner “The Roundup” from the top spot that it had enjoyed for the past three weeks and which had made it the highest performing film this year.
According to data from the Kobis tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council, “Broker” played on 1,590 screens and sold 145,000 tickets for Wednesday screenings. Its cumulative total of 1.15 million includes some 44,000 of previews earned on 14 screens.
The feat by a local art-house film gives further support to the notion that cinema attendance is rebounding in Korea. The country was formerly the world’s fourth biggest theatrical market, thanks to high per-capita rates of attendance.

The Korean actress, singer and songwriter—popularly known as Iu—has a legion of fans, including 26 million followers on Instagram, and has been described as a national treasure at home. She may now be well poised for crossover success with her first commercial film.

Almost two years since “Parasite” won a handful of Oscars, the impact of Covid has meant that the Korean theatrical sector has been largely unable to capitalize on the trickle-down effect of those wins.
Its current malaise stands in contrast to the pandemic windfalls enjoyed by other parts of the Korean entertainment biz — think BTS, Blackpink, “Squid Game” and the latest streaming phenomenon “All of Us Are Dead.”
