Exclusive: Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins (Freud’s Last Session) has signed on to star in Bruno Penguin and the Staten Island Princess, the latest film from director Nick Cassavetes. Billed as the first-ever major Hollywood production to shoot in Antarctica, the film also has Shia Labeouf (Padre Pio) in talks to star and will enter production in November.
Scripted by Daniel Barnz and Ned Zeman, Bruno Penguin is based on a Vanity Fair article from the latter which tells the true story of adventurous Swiss photographer Bruno Zehnder, a superb artist who spent the last 20 years of his life in Antarctica photographing Emperor penguins. He was obsessed by them – their kindness, the way they lived, their deep levels of affection for one another. Bruno spent his life trying to learn how to communicate with them and over time, the colonies grew to know him and return his fondness.

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.

It’s my understanding that the tampons were handmade.
Unfortunately, I was unable to hunt down the contact information for “Excision” writer/director Richard Bates Jr. to confirm that fact in time for this column’s ceremonial 11:59pm publication. In 2022, Netflix released a live-action series based on the "Resident Evil" video games, just a few months removed from the "Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness" anime series for the streamer. Not to mention, Johannes Roberts' cinematic reboot, "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City." That film came just four years after the end of Paul W.S. Anderson's mega-blockbuster film series starring Milla Jovovich, which ran concurrently with a series of unrelated animated films and many installments of the video game. This is all to say that "Resident Evil," as a property, has grown beyond just the games, and that the fandom has splintered off into a variety of directions and mediums. Trying to appease the whole of the "Resident Evil" community with an adaptation is at this point, impossible. Too many people want too many different things, and those differences are often in direct opposition to one another.

The filmography of Nick Cassavetes is an interesting subject to dissect. You have a crime thriller like “John Q” followed by the gold standard for modern romantic dramas, “The Notebook.” Then there’s “Alpha Dog” and “My Sister’s Keeper.” And his most recent film is 2014’s rom-com “The Other Woman.” All this to say, the writer-director is known for keeping film fans on their toes.

This look at the ethics of transplantation, starring Grammer as a surgeon, doesn’t wind up as tough-minded as it first appears
There’s something about organ-transplant movies that encourages sentimentality and wishy-washy melodrama; looking back to movies such as Return to Me or Seven Pounds or My Sister’s Keeper. But this one promises a more hard-edged look at the ethics, the compromises and the difficult choices. “The heart is just a muscle,” grunts top surgeon Andre Boxer, played by Kelsey Grammer. Boxer is a gruff, cheerless workaholic who smokes like a chimney and often looks terrible. It’s a bravely unflattering and un-Frasier-like role, though somewhat improbably, Boxer is sleeping with a colleague played by Julia Stiles, a good 25 years his junior.
The crux of the story is an urgent debate over who should receive a heart that has unexpectedly become available. Alongside Grammer and Stiles on the transplant...

It’s August 2020 and that can only mean one thing: HBO Max is about to enter Lovecraft Country.
Over the years HBO (and by the transitive property its new HBO Max streaming offshoot) has grown accustomed to debuting a buzzworthy new TV show or limited series every couple of months. In the 12 months leading up to June 2008, she had earned roughly $50 million, according to Forbes, thanks to being a star of the four-part Shrek franchise, plus live-action turns in the comedy What Happens in Vegas and the tear-jerker My Sister's Keeper, which came out the following year.
