Call “Sight” a stealth faith-based movie and you won’t be far off the mark. For the most part, it’s a respectful but unremarkable biopic about Dr. Ming Wang, a Chinese-born, Nashville-based eye surgeon whose innovative use of amniotic membrane contact lenses has helped restore the eyesight of millions of patients, many of them children. But the end, which contains a Qr code much like distributor Angel Studios’ summer blockbuster “Sound of Freedom” did last year, features the real Dr. Wang — one of the film’s executive producers — in a sequence where he credits his success as having been possible “only with God’s grace,” after he was able to “open myself to God.”
Judging from the time-tripping scenario cobbled together by writers John Duigan, Buzz McLaughlin and director Andrew Hyatt, Wang’s road to Damascus was a rugged one. The decades-spanning story covers his traumatic childhood in Hangzhou,...

Film festivals in North America have launched some of the greatest movies ever – whether nonfiction or fiction. Telluride premiered Free Solo, Slumdog Millionaire, and Argo; Sundance debuted sex, lies and videotape, Napoleon Dynamite, An Inconvenient Truth, and this year’s Oscar winning documentary 20 Days in Mariupol; the Toronto International Film Festival premiered I Am Not Your Negro and Ray.
The importance of festivals to the industry is beyond question, but many of the most celebrated ones on this continent are facing a moment of crisis. Post-pandemic financial struggles are plaguing Sundance, TIFF, and Hot Docs among others, and the situation with the latter festival is serious enough that it may have to fold.
Deadline’s Doc Talk podcast digs into the precarious state of film festivals in our latest episode, examining that vital question with guests steeped in the field: Ken Jacobson, executive director of the Hot Springs Documentary...

For this edition, we’re looking at India – but no, not Bollywood. India’s regional film industries are thriving, especially those in its Southern region. Today’s pick, The Goat Life (Aadujeevitham), is currently the third highest-grossing Malayalam language film of all time and one of the highest-grossing Indian films of the year. As his dazzling debut, Shallow Grave, gets a 30th anniversary rerelease, here’s to an extraordinary career that ranges from Trainspotting to Slumdog Millionaire and that unforgettable London 2012 Olympic opening ceremony
Lancashire-born film-maker Danny Boyle holds a special place in the nation’s heart, having been responsible for not one but three defining moments in our recent pop-culture history. In 1996, his daringly inventive adaptation of Irvine Welsh’s Trainspotting changed the face of young British cinema, with star-making performances from the likes of Ewan McGregor, Kelly Macdonald and Robert Carlyle, and a magpie soundtrack that out-hipped Pulp Fiction. I was co-hosting Radio 1’s film programme when Trainspotting hit UK cinemas, and Mary Anne Hobbs and I immediately ditched our opening station jingles in favour of the thumping drum intro to Lust for Life, which remained the show’s theme tune in perpetuity.

“I’ve felt that being called ‘niche’ is a compliment, actually,” Monkey Man star Sobhita Dhulipala tells Deadline.
It is nighttime in India when we catch up with the star, and we are discussing a recent profile that dubbed her a “niche Indian actress.”
“In India, there’s the conventional idea of a mainstream commercial film star where they love you because you entertain and give them escape, but you’re not really accountable as an actor to stand for anything,” she explains. “I guess my expectation from a different kind of actor who does films that reach my heart and travel with me would be somehow more personal, and that is a bit of a niche.”
Dhulipala’s choice of roles has reflected this mentality. Born in the South Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, she followed the career pipeline that takes a person from beauty pageants to acting, a path trodden by Priyanka Chopra,...

Exclusive: Charithra Chandran, who broke out playing Edwina Sharma in Netflix’s smash regal series Bridgerton, has spoken out against an entertainment industry mentality that she feels pits people of color against each other.

The times are changing across Indian cinema and Katrina Kaif, one of the top stars of the country, is changing with them.
The top 10 Indian films in the post-pandemic year 2023 were all star-driven blockbusters and Kaif was in the mix with Bollywood action extravaganza “Tiger 3,” the latest in Yash Raj Films’ spy universe, where she starred alongside Salman Khan. 2024 has seen a paradigm shift in that, with five of the top 10 films being what are known locally as “content films,” where a strong storyline takes precedence over spectacle.
The Hindi-language Bollywood may be India’s most visible film industry globally and the term is often used internationally as shorthand for the country’s other film industries, much to their chagrin. To put matters in context, of the 1,796 Indian films released in 2023, 317 were in the Telugu language, 271 in Tamil and 241 in Kannada, with Bollywood in joint fourth place with Malayalam,...

Yesterday, all their troubles seemed so far away.
In 2022, Peter Rosza and Conor Woulfe sued Universal Pictures after they rented the 2019 movie “Yesterday” on Amazon Prime Video and subsequently felt they had been bamboozled by the trailer. The film, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis, is a zany musical fantasy in which Himesh Patel, a struggling musician, is bonked on the head and wakes up in a world in which The Beatles Never Happened. As such, he starts playing their songs as if they are his own and the movie follows the expected Preston Sturges-like tropes you might expect.
The trailer for the movie featured quite a few glimpses of the alluring Cuban-born actress Ana de Armas, later Oscar-nominated for her leading turn in “Blonde,” who ended up not being in the movie at all. An early cut included her character, but that storyline was shaved down after the movie tested poorly.

As a movie lover, one of the most wonderful pleasures of this passion is discovering new filmmakers with their own identity, style, and message. There’s almost always something special about a feature film debut from an unknown director, but when it’s from a highly popular actor with an overwhelmingly positive public opinion, the expectations surrounding the movie inevitably change. Dev Patel directs, writes – along with Paul Angunawela and John Collee (Hotel Mumbai) – produces, and stars in Monkey Man, whose story described as “John Wick in Mumbai” was deemed too heavy for the Indian audience by Netflix, prompting Jordan Peele (Get Out) to watch it, buy it, and give it a theatrical release window, so impressed he was.

The British actor’s directorial debut is a visceral love letter to global action cinema that’s an exhilarating, if messy, ride
With his directorial debut Monkey Man, which he also co-wrote and stars in, Dev Patel cements himself both as an action star with A-list ambitions and a competent, resourceful B-movie director. This extravagantly violent and exuberantly messy revenge flick is set in a contemporary India (in a fictional city called Yatana) in which there seems to be a neon-drenched, sleaze-sodden brothel to suit every budget. It’s a place where power and money pollute, and where the poor are not just invisible, they are regarded as being less than human and little more than animals.
Patel takes this idea and runs with it, by incorporating the Indian caste system and class divisions into the story and drawing from the Hindu legend of the monkey-faced demigod Hanuman. When we...

History may not look more favorably upon many directorial debuts than Dev Patel’s inaugural feature Monkey Man. The film is both a wholly entertaining action film and an emotional, rewarding tale of revenge and dramatic character growth and development.
The story of Monkey Man concerns itself with the legend of something called Hanuman – which is the embodiment of strength and courage – that is supposed to serve as a vessel of retribution for those unable to achieve so themselves. At this point, the character of Kid (Patel) is introduced as a young man trying to earn a living participating in an illegal fight club wearing a gorilla mask. Through a series of flashbacks, it is revealed that Kid has been scarred by some rather brutal childhood traumas. The result of these incidents initiates and fuels his methodical quest for revenge against the men who destroyed the idyllic life he once enjoyed.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on April 4th, 2024, reviewing “Monkey Man,” a new film by co-writer, director and lead actor Dev Patel (“Slumdog Millionaire”). In theaters on April 5th.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Patel portrays Kat, a mysterious man who wrestles in the underground pits of Yatana (a fictional Mumbai). His wrestling character is based on the Hindu god Hanuman, a half monkey/half man protector. His weird persona is not without a plan, as he uses his underground contacts to infiltrate the VIP room in a private club, where he seeks revenge on the corrupt lawman who aided a religious leader in a takeover of his childhood home, brutally killing his mother. Kat continues to train as the Monkey Man to exact a specific revenge.
“Monkey Man” is in theaters on April 5th. Featuring Dev Patel, Pitobash, Sharito Copley, Vipin Sharma and Sikander Kherr.

Ever since it was announced in 2018, Monkey Man had a difficult journey to its release. Dev Patel’s directorial debut received setbacks due to covid restrictions, budgetary issues, and a broken hand of the writer/director/star (this last issue resulted in a change of choreography to ensure Patel could deliver fight scenes one-handed.)
Netflix acquired the film for worldwide distribution, a move which would have buried the film courtesy of a dreadful algorithm, yet that scenario was avoided courtesy of filmmaker Jordan Peele. The Get Out director acquired this film under his Monkeypaw Productions banner, intending to release the film into cinemas as part of his distribution deal with Universal Pictures. Dev Patel’s much-awaited directorial debut, Monkey Man, has hit silver screens worldwide except for India. Fans are disappointed and left in disarray, without confirmation of a certain release date.
Bollywood actors Sobhita Dhulipala and Sikander Kher join Patel in this Action-thriller, which the acclaimed Academy Award winner and filmmaker Jordan Peele produced.
Patel, who garnered fame and acknowledgment for Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, has continued to deliver exceptional performances in projects like The Newsroom, Chappie, the Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, and The Second-best Exotic Marigold Hotel and Lion. He received nominations for Oscars and Baftas for his roles in Slumdog Millionaire and Lion, and won a BAFTA for his role in Lion.

Oscar nominee Dev Patel poured his heart and soul into Monkey Man, and his unwavering commitment resulted in a film that masterfully blends adrenaline-pumping action with thought-provoking social commentary. Patel’s feature film directorial debut hits an occasional rough patch, but when it’s firing on all cylinders, it’s incredibly entertaining.
It’s hard to believe that the same Dev Patel who made his breakthrough in Slumdog Millionaire has now become a badass action star. The opening scenes introduce his character, Kid, as a brawler wearing a gorilla mask, his hidden face serving as a punching bag in an underground fight club. Winning isn’t his goal; earning cash is why he is in the ring. The more blood that flows from his beaten body, the higher the payment he receives from the club’s owner,...

Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut Monkey Man leads the new films at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, starting in 592 cinemas through Universal.
Directed, produced, from a story by and starring Patel, Monkey Man follows an anonymous young man who unleashes a campaign of violence against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother, and continue to systematically victimise the poor and powerless.
Filmed in early 2021, Netflix originally bought worldwide rights to Monkey Man. After Jordan Peele boarded the title as producer through his Monkeypaw Productions, Universal acquired it from Netflix earlier this year. It debuted at SXSW last month.

Monkey Man was originally expected to stream on Netflix. But Jordan Peele gave Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut a different fate, and sent it to the big screen.
The Slumdog Millionaire actor was aglow about Peele at the Los Angeles premiere of Monkey Man on Wednesday night at the Tcl Chinese Theatre.
“He took us from this thing that was brushed under the carpet to putting us on top of the mantel piece,” Patel told Deadline.
How did Monkey Man go from a $30 million Netflix pickup to the big screen? Sources tell us the streamer, after buying the movie, found it too gritty for the Indian market, and quietly shopped it around. Then Monkey Man‘s co-financier Bron Studios was hit with bankruptcy, which held up the movie from finding a home until Peele rescued it.

British actor Dev Patel is back to winning hearts through his onscreen performances with his most recent masterpiece, Monkey Man. Based in India (though shot in Indonesia), the film not only marks his directorial feature debut but also stars him in a never-seen-before role: A young man named ‘Kid’, who finally gets to settle the score with the people who took everything from him.
Monkey Man.
While the film is a masterwork in itself, multiple themes and elements have led to it being compared to the renowned John Wick saga. But what many don’t seem to realize is that this movie that Patel has co-written, directed, and starred in is already a step ahead of Chad Stahelski’s iconic action-thirsty saga with a lot of things that would inevitably further win the hearts of many.

Dev Patel's buzzy feature directorial debut "Monkey Man" is hitting theaters this weekend following its rapturous premiere at SXSW last month. Patel, known for his roles in movies like "Slumdog Millionaire" and "The Green Knight," is making a turn as both a filmmaker and action star with this one, which is being released theatrically by Universal Pictures and Jordan Peele's Monkeypaw Productions. It also turns out that the studio managed to acquire the film for relative chump change after Netflix let the rights go.
According to Deadline, Universal acquired the rights to "Monkey Man" for less than $10 million. That is, in a word, shocking. Way back in early 2021, Netflix bought most of the global rights to Patel's action flick for a whopping $30 million. Yet, the film sat on a shelf collecting dust until very recently when it was revealed that Peele managed to rescue the film from said shelf.

The world is heating up out there, but the gusts and erratic temperature swings of early Spring can often be deceiving. One minute it looks sunny and warm, the next you’re stranded on a long walk in just basketball shorts when a sudden chill descends. Or it looks nasty, and all of a sudden you’re overdressed in 80-degree heat. It might be best to stay safely within the confines of your local art house or home theater with some Don’t-Miss Indies instead.

Easter is behind us, we’re into a new month, and we’re fully into spring … and yet, the box office might be hitting another lull. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
There aren’t many scenarios where “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” doesn’t win its second weekend at #1. Even with a steep drop from its Easter opening, it should still be able to bring in another $30 million this coming weekend, which will be hard to beat.
It might be a coin flip on which of the other two new wide releases might do better, but I have to give a slight edge to “The First Omen,” 20th Century’s prequel to a horror franchise that began all the way back in 1976 with the horror film, “The Omen,” directed by Richard Donner pre-“Superman.” That led to two sequels in 1978 and 1981, even though the original...

Dev Patel’s Monkey Man has raised a lot of chatter worldwide for its hardcore action sequences. The film is set to be deep-rooted in Indian culture and take action to the next level. The film had to go through an intense production process before it was picked up by Jordan Peele. Patel admitted that felt like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman when his brainchild was picked up by the Get Out fame.

Actor Dev Patel, who became a household name with his portrayal of Jamal Malik in Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire, is now looking forward to his directorial debut, Monkey Man. The actor stars alongside Sharlto Copley, Sobhita Dhulipala, Sikandar Kher, and more, in the action-thriller. He not only directed the movie but has co-written the script with Paul Angunawela and John Collee.
Monkey Man premiered at South by Southwest on March 11, 2024, and opened to a positive response from the critics and the audience. The ones who managed to watch the movie have praised the actor’s hard work and dedication toward the project. The year 2024 may be one of those years when the film industry is offering us some of the most hyped and exciting films in a while. But the upcoming Monkey Man, which stars Oscar Award-nominated actor Dev Patel, has been by far one of the most highly-anticipated films of the year.
In fact, since the trailer of the star’s upcoming directorial debut dropped, fans have been comparing the movie to that of films from the John Wick franchise, which in itself is a huge achievement.

But reaching this milestone was not an easy task by a very long shot, especially when the film was on the brink of being thrown into the trashcan. Recently, Patel revealed that the producers of the film were almost pulling out at the last second, which made him improvise and use crew members as extras while reusing several props on set.

Dev Patel has been a well-known, majorly respected actor in Hollywood for years dating back to his star-making performance in "Slumdog Millionaire." Now, more than 15 years later, Patel is stepping behind the camera for his feature directorial debut "Monkey Man," a movie that also sees him taking an action star turn. While "Monkey Man" was originally going to go directly to Netflix, Universal Pictures and "Get Out" director Jordan Peele rescued it and will be giving it a major theatrical release. Can this film become the next big original breakout action hit?
"Monkey Man" hits theaters next weekend and is currently eyeing an opening between $16 and $25 million, per Box Office Pro. That's an encouraging start given that Netflix originally spent around $30 million on the production. Those teen drama TV series are not to be taken lightly. Because they could produce the most promising Oscar-nominated or winning actors. For example, consider Skins, created by Jamie Brittain and Bryan Elsley.
Every episode usually centers on a specific character or group of characters and the challenges they encounter in their daily lives. Themes of mental illness, dysfunctional families, bullying, and s*icide were also covered in greater detail. Not only did Skins receive positive reviews and good box office results, but it also gained a cult following. Of course, this is due to the stellar cast.

After years of suppressing his rage,...
