James Cameron has seldom been more vocal about his appreciation for an artist than when he was completely bowled over by Bernard Hill’s role in Titanic. For a director as esteemed as Cameron, there must be very few things that can still hold that effect on him, however, Titanic still manages to churn out such rare and treasured moments at a steady pace.

Despite playing only a minor role in the film, the subtlety of Bernard Hill’s powerhouse performance in the iconic Leonardo DiCaprio film held the capacity to move the director of the $2.26 billion romantic tragedy. As such, it was only right that Cameron expressed his gratitude and privilege after witnessing the understated actor’s process at work.

The Listener has had a long and winding journey to its late March 2024 release. The movie, opening in theaters and available on video-on-demand tomorrow, is genuinely moving. Much of that credit should go to the director and actor, who seem in sync in tone and highlight an exploration of compassion and empathy.
Tessa Thompson delivers a terrific performance in The Listener, taking the viewer on a journey that’s fulfilling. Director Steve Buscemi coaxes out a cinematic experience that seems to aim to build a therapeutic rapport with its audience. This results in a “bottle” film with only one cast member, whom you can’t pull your eyes away from.

One of the world’s great true-life train heist stories is set to return to the big screen in China. Filmmaker DaMing Chen and veteran producer Chris Lee have partnered to develop a feature adaptation of James Zimmerman’s acclaimed nonfiction book, The Peking Express: The Bandits Who Stole a Train, Stunned the West, and Broke the Republic of China.
The new film, like the book, will recount the improbable saga of a 1923 incident once known as the “Lincheng Outrage,” which was sparked when Chinese bandits raided a luxury express train bound for Beijing and took over 300 international hostages — captivating the world and stirring up a six-week geopolitical showdown. A subject of popular fascination a century ago, the event inspired no less than Josef von Sternberg’s 1932 romance/adventure classic Shanghai Express, starring Marlene Dietrich and Anna May Wong, as well as two later Paramount Pictures remakes.

A decade before Knight and Day was released, a movie like it would have killed with audiences: Come on, it starred Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz and looked to perfectly mash humor and action in a way that so few male/female-led action-comedies had for years. Yet, it didn’t connect. But why? There are a lot of reasons, really, and not just, as Roy Miller would say, “one of those things.” Through lousy marketing, hokey promotion, poorly timed sneak previews, and even Katie Holmes, Knight and Day fizzled, less “beautiful dress” than beautiful mess…But it did at least inspire a Bollywood remake, so suck on that, Vanilla Sky! Let’s find out: What Happened to this Movie?!

Following many years of dominance as an action star, Tom Cruise is reportedly taking a dramatic role in Quentin Tarantino’s The Movie Critic.
A couple of weeks ago, a story was floating around which suggested Tom Cruise was keen to secure a role in The Movie Critic, Quentin Tarantino’s final film. Following a decade in which he has largely stuck to action movies, Cruise’s recent deal with Warner Bros came alongside suggestions that he was keen to launch a new period in his career where he would return to the kind of dramatic roles that he has largely neglected for the last ten years or so.
Hollywood scooper Jeff Sneider first reported that Cruise was looking to reshape his career by securing a role in Tarantino’s final film. That was a couple of weeks ago, and now Variety has confirmed the story, adding that Cruise’s...

Tom Hollander and Tom Holland may share 95% of a name, but what they don’t share is a massive Marvel paycheque.
While appearing on Late Night With Seth Meyers, Tom Hollander revealed that he was once mistakenly sent a box-office bonus meant for Tom Holland. “People in the account’s department of my agency got confused. We were with the same agents briefly. And it was a terrible moment,” Hollander said. “I went to see my friend who was doing theater in England. I sat smugly in the audience just having done a BBC show for $30,000 … the interval came and I checked my email and I got one from the agency saying, ‘Payment slip for first box office bonus for ‘The Avengers.’”
Hollander was curious, but upon opening the email, he was left shaken by just how much it was. “It was an astonishing amount of money,” Hollander said. “It was not his salary.

Despite a union with SAG-AFTRA and increasing attention paid to the very best voice acting performances in the industry, it’s still easy to take those performances for granted. It’s part and parcel of a medium that still struggles with being recognized as an art form, and one where those union protections don’t yet protect the most vulnerable performers.
Voice acting is often the key to whether a story-heavy game sinks or swims. Granted, it is possible for a game’s voice acting to become iconic, even with a crappy dub. The original Resident Evil is still a meme for B-movie lines like the Jill Sandwich, and Shenmue’s English voice acting, respectfully, flat-out sucks. But a truly remarkable job, like the whole of Final Fantasy Xii or Nolan North’s various appearances as Nathan Drake, reminds us why it’s important to remember our roots, appreciate the creators,...

Zorro and Expats are the big shows coming to Prime Video in January. The former is what Amazon are calling a “bold reinterpretation” of the classic hero El Zorro for 2024. Starring Miguel Bernardeau as Diego de la Vega and Renata Notni as Lolita Marquez, it’s definitely an intriguing-sounding action-adventure series, with a ten-episode first season based on the iconic character originally created by Johnston McCulley all the way back in 1919.
Meanwhile, upcoming drama series Expats is based on the bestselling 2016 novel The Expatriates by Janice Y. K. Lee, and follows “the vibrant lives of a close-knit expatriate community” in Hong Kong. Nicole Kidman has been known for picking the right kind of shows to lead in the past, so let’s hope this is another banger for the actress, who is also on board as an executive producer here.
Here’s everything coming to Amazon Prime Video and Freevee this month.

Matthias Schweighöfer is one of the most popular and successful German actors in Hollywood today. Although cast in a minor role as Lieutenant Franz Herber in the Tom Cruise-led cast film Valkyrie (2008), the film’s success helped Schweighöfer breakthrough into Hollywood. However, Schweighöfer’s acting career began over a decade earlier, in 1994. As a son of veteran German actress Gitta Schweighöfer and actor Michael Schweighöfer, Matthias Schweighöfer has had a fascinating interest in acting and filmmaking from a young age. With an unmissable on-screen presence, Matthias Schweighöfer is often recognized for his uncanny resemblance to HBO’s Game of Thrones cast...

At the time of its 1978 release, "Superman" was one of the most expensive films ever made, boasting a $55 million budget. To tell the story of the famous Man of Steel — an out-of-this-world superhero of immense strength that stood for American values — director Richard Donner's film had to be larger-than-life. The colors were vivid, the airborne special effects were (at the time) groundbreaking, and it had an outstanding cast that truly brought these beloved comic book characters to life and treated them as dynamic individuals.
Christopher Reeve, especially, gives a spectacular performance in the lead role. What he does best is clearly mark the differences and tension between his naive, dweeby alter ego Clark Kent and the formidable Superman. Here’s something we don’t see often: opening projections plummeting for a Marvel Studios movie.
Its latest sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel, The Marvels, which is also an extension of the Disney+ series WandaVision and Ms. Marvel, has seen its weekend forecast collapse from $75M-$80M three weeks ago to around $60M stateside. Some tracking services, such as Quorum, have lowered their estimates to $50M+. The Marvels opens this Friday.
A domestic opening that low would put the $200M production in the neighborhood of 2015’s Ant-Man ($57.2M) and lower than Marvel’s November 2021 misfire Eternals ($71.2M).
Overseas projection for the sequel sit at $80M, putting the global start at $140M, which is lower than the worldwide debuts of Eternals ($160M) and the theatrical-day-and-date-impacted Black Widow ($148M). We’re cautious that international could come in lower.
Presales for The Marvels sit just north of $5M, which is on par with...

Marvel’s next movie, “The Marvels,” hits theaters this Friday. But the film’s final trailer, which you can watch at the top of the page now, might as well be an “Avengers” retrospective.
No really. The first 25 seconds of this 2-minute trailer consists of clips from various “Avengers” movies, including Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Captain America (Chris Evans) saying “whatever it takes.” And it’s overlaid with Samuel L. Jackson’s “Heroes. It’s an old fashioned notion” speech from “Endgame.”
This is followed by clips from “The Marvels,” which appears to be about an interdimensional threat of… some kind, that somehow brings Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) together to fight it. Cue thrilling fight scenes — and the unexpected reveal that Tess Thompson will be appearing as Valkyrie. (More on that momentarily).

It might be safe to say that, of the biggest stars in Hollywood, nobody cares more about the movie industry than Tom Cruise. And, really, without his dedication to put butts in seats (whether it’s his name on the marquee or not), one wonders how different the cinema would be. According to a number of his Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One collaborators, quite.
In a new piece published by The Times, director Christopher McQuarrie recalled first meeting with Tom Cruise, in which he told the director, “I make mass entertainment.” He added, “There is an outsized importance placed on Oscars…Films that not many people are going to see. A wedge has been driven into the industry. Are you an artist or an entertainer? Tom doesn’t see them as mutually exclusive.”

Beginning 15 years ago with Valkyrie, a WWII action-thriller centered on the ill-fated, real-life attempt to assassinate Hitler by senior military officers, Academy Award-winning writer-director Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects) has been in the Tom Cruise business and business, as everyone knows by now, has been very good, not just for Cruise but for McQuarrie too. Since that first team-up, McQuarrie contributed a series-saving, uncredited rewrite of 2011’s Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol for director Brad Bird before turning his screenwriting talents to several Cruise-led projects, including Jack Reacher, Edge of Tomorrow, and The Mummy (a rare commercial misfire). More recently, the duo collaborated on Top Gun: Maverick, the record-breaking sequel to director Tony Scott’s 1986 hit film, Top Gun....

Bryan Singer is planning a documentary feature that would address the sexual misconduct allegations against him and also chronicle his attempt to make a filmmaking comeback years after a career implosion. Documentary sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the project has been floated in the nonfiction world, with Variety reporting that the disgraced director is self-financing the endeavor.
Singer has remained out of the Hollywood spotlight following a 2019 exposé in The Atlantic. The piece included claims by four Singer accusers detailing sexual encounters, including one allegation of rape, with teenage boys. (In 2019, Singer settled a 2017 suit filed by Cesar Sanchez-Guzman, who alleged the director sexually assaulted him during a 2003 party in Seattle. Singer has denied all allegations of abuse and misconduct.)
Prior to the exposé in The Atlantic, Singer was attached to direct the remake of ’80s action film Red Sonja but was dropped from the project following the publishing of the report.

With its list of new releases for April 2023, HBO Max is premiering the final episodes of two major shows.
First up is the continuation of Titans season 4 on April 13. Returning after a four month hiatus, these next six episodes will be the last go around for HBO Max’s gritty live-action DC series. Barry (Bill Hader), a hitman who stumbles into acting, explores the dark, often comedic underbelly of both LA gangsters and Hollywood. Henry Winkler stars as Cousineau, Barry’s acting teacher and the man forced to confront the reality of his former student.

Another crime story will come to HBO Max in April, although this one is based on a true story. “Love & Death” revolves around the murder of Betty Gore (played by Lily Rabe) in a small Texas town in 1980. Her husband Alan (Jesse Plemons) has an affair with Candy (Elizabeth Olsen), who attends their church. Suddenly, the thrills turn deadly. Candy picks up an ax, whacks her rival over 40 times, and then claims self-defense. The new...

The following article contains spoilers for "Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania."
"Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania" has been out for a few days now. We've had some time to digest the adventures of the buggy superheroes in the Quantum Realm and draw some parallels to other Marvel Cinematic Universe adventures. In the film, Scott Lang (Paul Rudd), Cassie Lang (Kathryn Newton), Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly), Janet van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer), and Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) are sucked into the world beneath ours. While there, they meet a band of refugees who are fighting against the despotic ruler of the place, Kang the Conqueror (Jonathan Majors). They band together to take him out, setting Scott (and the rest of the multiverse) on the path to their next chapter.
"Quantumania" has a whole lot in common with another uprising film in the MCU — "Thor: Ragnarok." Whatever you felt about both titles,...

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise were one of the defining power couples of the 2000s. The reasons weren’t all positive, however. As with all of Cruise’s marriages, his time with the former Dawson’s Creek actor was something of a strange public spectacle thanks to his involvement with the Church of Scientology.
Holmes was distressingly quiet about her situation while married to the Top Gun star. Eventually, she had a dramatic split with both Cruise, and the clutches of the notoriously possessive Scientology leadership. While not all the details are public knowledge, there are a few shocking details out there about how Holmes got away from Scientology and her superstar ex-husband.

The "Mission: Impossible" franchise is a revolving door. Countless characters appear in one movie and then vanish without a trace, let alone a name-drop, from the next one. The only anchors from the beginning to the present are Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt and Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell.
These hi-and-byes happened behind the camera too. From the first 1996 "Mission: Impossible" up to 2015's "Mission: Impossible -- Rogue Nation," each film had a different director. This was what kept the franchise fresh even though the scripts were formulaic (Ethan's framed for treason by the real mole in every other movie). Each director had a different style and so told the story in a different way.
Brian De Palma's original "Mission: Impossible" had the most low-key set pieces but still had his usual boiling suspense; take the scene where Ethan is accused of being a mole by his handler Kittridge...

“Gun on set! Gun on set! Everyone, gun on set!”
It’s April, 2022 and we’re in Mmc Studios in Cologne for the shooting of European conspiracy thriller Operation Napoleon. It’s 5,000 miles and six months distant from the events of Oct. 2021 on the New Mexico set of Rust, when Alec Baldwin, discharged a live round from a revolver used as a prop gun killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. But the warning still chills.
Not that anyone here seems bothered.
Director Óskar Þór Axelsson is too busy setting up what will be the climax of Operation Napoleon: as a team of investigators prepare to board an old German World War II plane that has recently emerged from one of Iceland’s largest glaciers. The plane is at the center of the film, and the best-selling novel it’s based on, by Icelandic writer Arnaldur Indriðason.
