Scooby Doo and Mummy Too
The Scooby Doo franchise proved before that it could do mysteries centered around mummies very well. It did it absolutely brilliantly in one of the best episodes of 'Scooby Doo Where are You' with "Scooby Doo and Mummy Too". "Mummy Scares Best" already sounds so promising reading the synopsis, and the fact that it was set in Egypt added to the appeal. Really loved it when the franchise started to vary the locations by having episodes set abroad and became more exotic from Season 3 of 'The Scooby Doo Show'.
"Mummy Scares Best" does this and it is a brilliant episode. Personally think that it is not just one of the best episodes of Season 2 (which had a lot of ups but a few downs) but also one of my favourites of 'What's New Scooby Doo'. Would go as far to say that it is even better than "Scooby Doo and Mummy Too", thanks to the more elaborate and authentic setting, the more surprising ending and that it is even creepier, which takes some doing.
"Mummy Scares Best" is one of the best looking episodes of Season 2. The very exotic location helps and Egypt is up there with the most exotic countries in the world. The colours and the inside of the pyramid were especially well done and likewise with the character animation on the Mummy. The music is as ever true to the style of the show while having a lot of atmosphere, really liked that there was a little flavour of the location.
The writing is always entertaining, courtesy of primarily the ever endearingly goofy Shaggy and Scooby (such as Scooby dressed as a female dancer), and also makes one interested in learning more about mummies and Egyptology. The chase scene is visually imaginative and one of the more exciting set pieces of an already action packed episode. "Mummy Scares Best" is never dull, in fact it is one of the most energetic episodes of the show pace wise.
It is also very creepy, the "join us" cry scared me when younger and still unsettles. The ending is the cleverest one since "Toy Scary Boo" and one of the most shocking of the show. Melbourne O'Reilly makes a welcome and far from squandered return, he is so cool when in action. The mummy is up there with the shows most frightening villains, then again mummies in general have always given me the creeps. The voice acting is very good, Casey Kasem is a joy as Shaggy and Steve Blum expertly makes O'Reilly charming and swaggering.
All in all, one of my favourite episodes of the show no doubt. 10/10.
