Emmett's ego
Amalgamated Dynamics sends Emmett a letter interested in a patent he created in 1932. Patent Counsel T.J. Fowler (Bill Quinn, "Archie Bunker's Place") will be coming to Mayberry to speak to him. Meanwhile, Emmett struggles to find which invention the company is interested in. He determines it to be a screw that won't allow a phonograph to be cranked too tightly. Howard feels it can help the space industry, further inflating Emmett's ego. Howard also plans a big newspaper story over it. Mr. Fowler arrives to inform Emmett that they will be using a more sophisticated device created by their own people. They merely want to buy the rights for $400, as it somewhat resembles his existing patent. Mr. Fowler bluntly states it as one of their "nuisance" deals. Emmett shields the truth from his friends, but is pressured by Howard. Emmett is so embarrassed by the situation that he feels his only choice is to pack up and move. Sam goes to Mr. Fowler in hopes of finding a resolution.
