Warning: Spoilers
"Adam-12" Executive Producer Jack Webb didn't just want to entertain the viewing audience, he also hoped to teach and inspire. In this episode's opening segment, Malloy and Reed are dispatched to a home with a possible gas leak. Turns out the elderly owner of the home had intentionally turned her kitchen stove's gas on and then departed the house. The purpose was to put her pet cats and birds "to sleep". A relative was moving her to a retirement home which did not allow pets. Not knowing what else to do with her pets, she chose to send them to Heaven.

With this single segment, the show was perhaps teaching potential viewers facing such a predicament, that there are real world solutions to be considered. Malloy tells the woman that her cats can go to a rescue where some kid will surely find them and love them. Strangely, Reed suggests bringing the caged birds with to the retirement home and then set them free to fly with the wild birds which are sure to live in the area. These birds, being life-long pets, would now be forever dependent on humans to feed and care for them. So Reeds idea isn't so great.

The next segment shows Malloy doing some figuring and detecting. Another elderly individual, this time a gentleman who once served in the Queen of England's military, has been beaten in his home and robbed of a retirement check. Malloy realizes that the man is one of honor, but that his story doesn't gel. Nice to see the partners silently putting 2 and 2 together.

Next, it's off to hear little actress Jodie Foster in one of her very first acting jobs, tell what she knows - or perhaps only what she claims to know - about a classmate who is missing from her school bus ride home. The missing classmate's worried Mother and little Jodie join Malloy and Reed for a drive back to the school. The classmate is located in a most unusual place, but it's a location of her own choosing. Oddly, the Officers are never shown contacting Jodie's parents to inform them that Jodie is with them. Wouldn't they be wondering why their own child hasn't gotten home from school yet? Ah well, everything turns out just fine.

Next it's off to an apartment building where there's a dead man, a parked car which has been broken into, a large, tight-lipped crowd and a very frightened and worried married couple. Malloy, along with Sergeant MacDonald, convinces the couple that the law is on the side of those who are victimized and tell the truth. Acting upon her faith - in God, Malloy and the law - the woman brings forth her son. He's the owner of the car which has been broken into. Seems the thief balked in the young man's face when confronted and then went on the attack. Unfortunately for the bad guy, the young man had his father's registered gun with him.

Another lesson aimed - with apparent hope - at the viewing audience. Hope that any viewers who might find themselves in a similar situation, will also have faith and trust in the law. Add one more fine episode to the long list for "Adam-12".

The Law Will Protect You

(*Officer Malloy to Patricia Fillmore quote*) - "Do you realize you could have blown this place up!?"

For starters - Officers Reed and Malloy take care of a gas leak in the home of an elderly woman.

Following this incident there's so much to deal with, from an auto burglary shooting, to a fight over a stolen check, to a missing child from the Clifton Webb School.

All-in-all - It's a very busy shift for Officers Reed and Malloy.
