History stands as a testament that reboots, spin-offs, or adaptations fail the moment makers decide to give their own twist to the mythos. From The Witcher to Eragon, there have been several series and movies that ended up being ridiculed and sneered by fans and critics. And Amazon’s Rings of Power too can be found among such projects.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power
Based on the famous J. R. R. Tolkien books, the series provided its own spin on the tale by being set thousands of years before the events in the books. Needless to say, the series was not as well received. And even Lord of the Rings star, the late Bernard Hill had some deeply insulting words to say about the series.

Young adult literary franchises have a rough track record on cinema screens. Sure, “Harry Potter” is a (now tarnished) cultural touchstone. But the “Twilight” books became famously bad (albeit iconic) films, and that’s to say nothing of the absolute graveyard of sputtered, failed, or forgotten YA adaptations that Hollywood populated during the late ’00s and early 2010s. Did you know that they made three “Maze Runner” films? That the “Divergent” films were supposed to end with a TV show that never happened? That two “Percy Jackson” movies were made before the upcoming TV show? That “Eragon” even exists? If you do remember, you’ve likely been trying hard to forget.
Which makes the general high quality of “The Hunger Games” films all the more impressive. It helps that the Lionsgate franchise has always had better material to mine than most of the other dystopian disasters that attempted to capitalize on its runaway success.

Rick Riordan's middle-grade book series "Percy Jackson and the Olympians," and its larger universe of ancient mythology-based books, is arguably one of the few franchises that could legitimately be considered the heir to the "Harry Potter" phenomenon — but with way fewer scandals. Like the magical teenage boy, Percy Jackson also got a big-budget theatrical film adaptation (one directed by "Harry Potter" alum Chris Columbus and starring Logan Lerman and Alexandra Daddario). It made decent money but was so horrendous the author still talks trash about the two movies today.
The story follows a tween boy who discovers he is the son of the actual Greek god Poseidon and a human woman and is tasked with going on a road trip across the United States to find Zeus' stolen lightning bolt or risk a war on Olympus. Now, fans of the books will get a second chance at seeing the story play out on screen.

We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

Even though "Yellowjackets" fans are always hungry for more, the Showtime series' sophomore season has come to an end. Season 3 has already been confirmed, but it'll be a while before it airs; for what it's worth, the gap between seasons 1 and 2 was 16 months, the former beginning on November 14, 2021, and the latter on March 24, 2023.
Fear not, antler queens, because there's a movie out there perfect to tide you over. "Ravenous," directed by the late Antonia Bird. Released in 1999, the film's genre is just as hard to pin down as that of "Yellowjackets" — "Ravenous" oscillates from horror to bemused comedy, sometimes in the same scene. What the two works do have in common is that they're both stories about people on the edge of civilization, goaded by supernatural forces to devour their fellow man.

Writing for New Scientist magazine (paywalled), Christopher Paolini – author of 2002 fantasy novel Eragon, which was adapted for the big screen by 20th Century Fox in 2006 – cites Babylon 5 as a major influence on his new science fiction novel, Fractal Noise.
Fractal Noise is a prequel to Paolini’s first Sf novel, To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, which was published in 2020. It is the third book in his Fractalverse series.
Paolini told New Scientist:
Although the CGI is pretty janky, as a result of a number of unfortunate studio choices over the years, the writing and storytelling of this series remain incredibly solid. One of the first TV shows to tackle multi-season arcs… and to make them work. Babylon 5 has some of the greatest characters found in science fiction, and some of the most moving and epic moments.
Can’t argue with that. Paolini has always been open about his influences,...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Star Trek: Picard episode ‘Disengage’. Proceed with caution.
England-born actor Ed Speleers is no stranger to fantastical action-adventure roles — his big cinematic breakout came as the title role of the 2006 adaptation of high-fantasy epic Eragon. Since then, he’s worked steadily both in and out of genre work, including a stint as Jimmy Kent on Downton Abbey and roles in Outlander and Alice Through the Looking Glass.
But 2023 has been a big year for Speleers: Not only does he have a prominent role in the fourth season of Netflix’s You, but he’s also been inaugurated into the annals of Star Trek royalty in the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard. As we learned in the second episode of the season, which premiered this week, Speleers’ mysterious character isn’t just the wry, laconic son of Gates McFadden’s Beverly Crusher...

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses plot points on Season 3, Episode 2 of “Star Trek: Picard” (currently streaming on Paramount+) as well as the first half of the fourth season of “You” (currently streaming on Netflix).
When Ed Speleers was growing up in the UK, he remembers coming home from school, turning on BBC Two, and tuning into “Star Trek: The Next Generation” at 6:30pm — but he never quite considered himself a Trekkie. So when “Star Trek: Picard” showrunner Terry Matalas cast Speleers for the third season of the Paramount+ series, he told the actor he needed to go to “Star Trek University.”
“He gave me this long list of ‘Tng’ episodes that he felt were pertinent, and of films going right from ‘Wrath of Khan’ all the way to ‘First Contact,'” Speleers tells Variety via Zoom. “I devoured them. I’d spend three or four hours a day working...

In Netflix's "You," Penn Badgley's bookish killer lives a very unstable life. Not only is it exhausting work to stalk his way into the hearts of unsuspecting ladies, it also never ends well for anyone involved. So, at the end of each and every season, Joe finds himself starting over in a new place, completely alone (if you don't count whichever unlucky woman is about to be courted into an early grave). Thankfully, despite his grating personality and penchant for murder, Joe has a pretty good track record when it comes to making friends. In the fourth season of the hit series, Joe manages to forge one of his most intriguing friendships yet, with a famous author on the verge of launching a political career.

Epic fantasy has been a popular genre in the movies for nearly a century. Classics like "The Wizard of Oz," "Jason and the Argonauts," and "Snow White and the Seven Dwarves" attracted hordes of moviegoers; they also won awards and drew rave reviews from critics. But not every fantasy film gets two thumbs up. For every "The Lord of the Rings," there's a "Hobbit"; for every "Labyrinth," an "Eragon."
And yet, some of these films might make you sit up and cheer anyway. It's not just the swords and sorcery that make them fun; it's the diverse and complex characters, the bizarre and creative creatures, and the wild and innovative settings. Many fantasy films were lambasted by reviewers when they were released, but if you sit down to watch them today, you'll have a fantastic time.
Don't believe me? These 14 epic fantasy movies were panned by professional commentators, but they're still a blast to watch.

Now that "His Dark Materials" is ending, the search for the next title to carry the young adult (YA) fantasy torch is raging on. While we wait for more news about "The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes," Disney+ wants to become the home for second chances at adapting beloved YA books. It recently announced a new "Eragon" adaptation, and there's the highly anticipated "Percy Jackson & The Olympians."
First adapted in 2010 as "Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief" — a title that simple rolls off the tongue — that movie was a commercial success that was nevertheless heavily criticized for how much it deviated from the books, and for simply having a terrible script. It's a shame, because the books are rather good. Sure, they skew even younger than most YA novels, but they are highly entertaining adventures with poignant messages, and great characters. “Eragon” is soaring back to screens, with a new live-action series in the works for Disney+ that would recruit author Christopher Paolini as the co-showrunner and co-writer.
Paolini confirmed the news on Twitter, saying “Y’all are the best fans.” Paolini last year called on fans to push Disney for a “proper” adaptation of his books after the 2006 film based on “Eragon” flopped.
The “Eragon” series would focus on the four young adult and fantasy books as part of Paolini’s “The Inheritance Cycle” of novels, with “Eragon,” first published by Knopf in 2003, being the first in that franchise. The series also includes the books “Eldest,” “Brisingr” and “Inheritance.”

An “Eragon” live-action TV series is in early development at Disney+, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.
The series would be based on the Christopher Paolini young adult novel series “The Inheritance Cycle,” with “Eragon” being the first of the four books in that series.
According to sources, Paolini will serve as co-writer on the series. Bert Salke will executive produce under his Co-Lab 21 banner, with 20th Television producing. Salke is currently under an overall deal with Disney Television Studios, of which 20th TV is a part.
Reps for Disney and Paolini did not immediately respond to Variety‘s request for comment.

In frilly YA frivol “The King’s Daughter,” Louis Xiv (an awkwardly bewigged Pierce Brosnan) orders a mermaid captured and brought back to Versailles, so that he might sacrifice the creature during a solar eclipse and attain eternal life, it takes just a few minutes for such an amazing feat to be accomplished. But haste is hardly the order of the day with this quasi-historic fairy tale, which follows that thrilling opening with royal balls and cross-country horseback rides, courtly intrigue and plentiful costume changes — a girly dream of the French monarchy, for which would-be audiences have been obliged to wait a quarter-century.
The well-liked book on which it’s based, Vonda N. McIntyre’s “The Moon and the Sun,” was published in 1997, and discussions began almost immediately about an adaptation. The film focuses largely on what happens after the mermaid reaches France, and the Sun King (played by Brosnan with...

“Outlander” Season 5 alum Ed Speleers is among the actors who’ve joined the cast of “You” for Season 4 in a series regular role, Netflix announced Friday.
Speleers, also well-known for his work in “Downton Abbey” and “Eragon,” will play Rhys.
According to a character description from Netflix: “Dry, irreverent Rhys is an author whose memoir garnered him acclaim and pressure to launch a political career. Born into poverty, Rhys lived a traumatic early life before he came into money, going to Oxford and making all the right friends. Now, he moves easily in any social circle, while also seeing through those around him. He doesn’t have much time for partying, though he enjoys staying in touch with his eccentric circle of friends. After all, they were there for him in his troubled youth.”

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
The search for box office gold in the pages of classic literature can be a fickle thing. How many "Robin Hood" movies have we seen fail? Remember how badly "Eragon" flopped? Probably not!

Amazon Prime Video’s epic The Lord of the Rings series won’t arrive until 2022. Thankfully, with its list of new releases for November 2021, Amazon has a pretty major fantasy adaptation to hold us over.
The Wheel of Time is set to premiere on Nov. 19 and will bring Robert Jordan’s massive fantasy universe to life. Rosamund Pike stars as Moiraine, a powerful magic-user who guides five young people on a perilous journey around the world. One of them just might be the reincarnation of the Dragon, a powerful entity who could save the world…or destroy it.

It’s a bold, new post-Loki world for Disney+. To deal with it, Disney+ is going right back to the Marvel well for its list of August 2021 new releases.
Marvel’s What If…? premieres August 11 on Disney+. This is an animated series that will feature speculative stories within the MCU like “What if Peggy Carter became Captain America?”, “What if the Ravagers took T’Challa to space?”, and “What if…zombies?!?!?!” While What…If? always seemed like a fun thought exercise, the series has really taken on a vital multiversal context in light of Loki‘s conclusion.
In non-Marvel news, Disney+ will be filling out its library offerings this month. Mrs. Doubtfire arrives on August 6 and will be followed by Eragon on August 20. After its brief premier access release, Cruella will make itself a permanent, free home on Disney on August 27.
There aren’t many other original Disney+ series to speak of in August.

“The Mysterious Benedict Society,” which debuts on Disney+ this week, is the latest original programming to hit the streaming service. But it’s based on the book series of the same name by Trenton Lee Stewart, which has sold at least 3 million copies in the U.S. That’s a lot of fans who are probably wondering how closely the series will adapt those books.
Fortunately for them, according to series star Kristen Schaal, the answer is very.
Schaal plays Number Two, the right hand woman to the eccentric Mr. Benedict (Tony Hale). She’s a mousy woman, but there’s something vaguely terrifying about her. According to Schaal, she’s definitely handy in a fight, and you absolutely want her on your team.

It’s not often that it’s hard to say that a story should be adapted, but perhaps it’s due to the idea that Christopher Paolini’s book Eragon was kind of like a combination of The Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, a barely hidden combination that drew too heavily from both stories to really be called anything but a shadow of a story. Seriously, as much as I like to state that every story has validity, there wasn’t quite enough originality poured into this particular story and as a result, the critics saw it, the fans saw, and they couldn’t

Christopher Paolini wrote Eragon when he was just a teenager, but the fantasy novel later exploded in popularity and became a best-seller. Naturally, Hollywood came calling and 20th Century Fox acquired the rights to the novel, but unfortunately, the resulting adaptation was met with scathing reviews. Although Paolini wrote several more installments of what became known as The Inheritance…...

When “Eragon” was first released by 20th Century Fox in 2006, it was met with a, well, less than warm welcome. So Christopher Paolini, author of the best-selling trilogy, is hoping to see his work get another shot on screen with modern technologies, and he’s getting fans involved to make it happen.
Today, that 15-year-old film has a score of just 16% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and notched a 46% fresh rating from audiences. On the whole? Decidedly rotten. Of course, for most fans, that’s because the film adaptation strayed just a bit too far from the story told in the books.
Now, Paolini wants his series to get another shot with Disney. Taking to Twitter on Sunday, the author joined in on a fan-created campaign to push for a remake. Paolini encouraged his fanbase in their use of the hashtag #EragonRemake and noted that they should tag Disney to get their attention.

Traditionally, when critics discuss “the next Game of Thrones” or when studios, networks, and streamers search for “the next Game of Thrones,” the candidates put forth have much in common, genre-wise, with the late, sometimes great HBO series. They are the Lord of the Rings TV show or His Dark Materials or The Witcher—aka epic fantasy series that, by and large, have the look and feel of a Game of Thrones, ignoring the fact that, contextually, the fantasy elements of Game of Thrones were only one factor in its enormous success.
This isn’t an unfamiliar Hollywood tale. After a massive commercial success, the entertainment industry tends to throw its money behind (for want of a better word) knock-offs—stories that may be good or moderately successful, but are only alike their culture-changing predecessors in the kinds of superficial ways that don’t actually matter that much. To Sleep in a Sea of Stars is the science-fiction debut from Christopher Paolini, the best-selling author of Eragon (“The Inheritance Cycle” series). The story follows xenobiologist Kira Navárez as a chance encounter with an ancient, alien artifact propels her into an epic space adventure across the vast expanse of the galaxy, in a fight for the fate of humanity. The book, Paolini’s first in nine years, is an enthralling space adventure with high concepts and even higher stakes. It’s well-written, well-paced fun, and a satisfying read beginning to end.
Unlike much of what is on storytelling offer right now, Paolini’s novel offers an optimistic vision of humanity’s potential. It depicts a future where humans spread out across the stars, and in doing so, move beyond the arbitrary differences that plague our real-world existence. Race, gender, and sexuality have no obvious hierarchy,...

Video game actress Jennifer Hale, best known for her starring role as the Mass Effect series’ Commander Shepard, has been attached to Christopher Paolini’s next audio book.
Author of the wildly popular Eragon series about a boy and his dragon, Christopher Paolini became a household name in the early 2000s. Now he’s venturing into a new and unrelated science fiction universe, beginning with To Sleep in a Sea of Stars. An adult novel marketed as “epic”, it has a starting point very familiar to science fiction video game fans, with xenobiologist Kira Navárez finding an alien relic. The publisher’s summary says:
“During a routine survey mission on an uncolonized planet, Kira finds an alien relic. At first she’s delighted, but elation turns to terror when the ancient dust around her begins to move.
As war erupts among the stars, Kira is launched into a galaxy-spanning odyssey of discovery and transformation.

Christopher Paolini has been on the speculative fiction scene since he published his first novel, Eragon, as a teenager in 2002. The Inheritance Cycle series would go on to sell nearly 40 million copies globally. Nearly 20 years later, Paolini is breaking into the science fiction world with To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, his first adult novel. We are very excited to bring you a sneak peak, as part of a serialized excerpt campaign in partnership with Tor.com and The Mary Sue.

We look at how Dragonslayer by Duncan M Hamilton fits into the long-running fantasy subgenre involving dragons.
When Guillot is tasked with slaying the last of the dragons in Duncan M. Hamilton's Dragonslayer, the first in a planned fantasy trilogy, the character is way past his prime. All bets should be on the dragon, but a semblance of that knightly duty remains—even though Guillot struggles with alcoholism and is actively thwarted by someone high in power, there's tension in the narrative. Could Guillot actually win?

Although Jon Snow (Kit Harington) isn’t technically the King in the North anymore, he must feel like one after taking his first dragon ride with his girlfriend Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) in the “Game of Thrones” premiere on Sunday. The breathtaking sequence highlights all that is right in Westeros, before everything will go so very wrong in the series in the episodes ahead.
“It’s in beautiful sunlight. You’re in this fantastic snowy landscape. Compared to what comes later, this was the moment of just pure bliss and fun,” said visual effects supervisor Stefen Fangmeier in an interview with IndieWire. “Then also it’s a little bit of a romantic moment with them at the end where they land there and before all the terrible stuff happens because obviously they know that the Night King is going to come with the army of the dead.

The story of Nona, the orphan-turned-nun trained for battle, comes to a climactic end in the final Book of the Ancestor.
This Holy Sister review contains spoilers for the previous Book of the Ancestor books, but only minor spoilers for the third book in the trilogy.
First off, if you haven’t read Red Sister or Grey Sister (the first two books in the Book of the Ancestor trilogy), you need to drop everything and read them now. This is my favorite series to come from this author so far. To put that in context, I have already read and loved Mark Lawrence's previous two series: The Broken Empire and The Red Queen’s War.

Eight years after the last book in the Inheritance Cycle series, Christopher Paolini publishes a new short story collection.
I had a thought last year-- what has Christopher Paolini, author of the Inheritance Cycle series, been up to lately? A quick Google search told me nada. Then, at the very end of last year came a collection of short stories, set in the world of Alagaesia and a brief look at what our main character Eragon was up to, as well as telling some new stories set in that world.
It’s important to understand going in that this isn’t a singular story, and shouldn’t be held to the standards of holding up as a true sequel to the conclusion of the Inheritance Cycle. Holding it to such standards would leave the reader wanting much more from this, rather than enjoying the simple ride this collection presents.

Outlander fans are very familiar with horrifying villains. The antagonist of the show's earliest seasons, Black Jack Randall, was about as bad as a bad guy can get. In the upcoming fourth season, though, a new character might be giving Black Jack a run for his money. Irish pirate Stephen Bonnet, as fans of Diana Gabaldon's books will know, appears charming and handsome on the outside, but it doesn't take long for his awful nature to show itself. It's new territory for actor Ed Speleers, who plays Bonnet, and has previously made a career as fairly heroic characters.
Speleers started his career in a pretty magical way (pun intended). At the age of eighteen, after only appearing in school plays in England, he was plucked from a worldwide casting call to play the lead role in 2006's young adult fantasy epic Eragon. The movie, based on the first novel...

Outlander is adding some familiar faces to its cast for season four. The Starz drama has cast Orphan Black and Downton Abbey veteran Maria Doyle Kennedy as Jocasta, Jamie's strong-willed aunt.
