The 2000s saw the action genre in a state of flux. The Matrix revolutionized everything at the end of the previous decade, The Bourne Supremacy would make shaky cameras standard practice in 2004, and the MCU would take flight with Iron Man in 2008. At the same time, Michael Bay reached his ultimate form with Bad Boys II, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Kill Bill made kung fu classy, and Oldboy changed the way we look at hallways.
Within those changes came a host of greats that didn’t get the same attention. Some of these movies represent the first steps in the development of those who would define the genre, such as Scott Adkins and Gareth Evans. Some find stars at the height of the powers, such as Donny Yen and Michael Jai White. And some are just cool, because that’s really all an action movie needs.

The best things come in threes, especially stories. In Western nations, we like a three-act structure in which we set a status quo, watch our heroes fall, and then see them return to greatness. Some of these stories cannot be held within a single movie. For those epics, those monumental narratives, the movie trilogy was born. Trilogies represent some of the best that cinema has to offer, movies that changed the culture and the art form. The trilogy might vary in quality from film to film, but together these three films tell a story that cannot be ignored.
Before we get too far, let’s lay out our criteria. The trilogies chosen here are those intended to be a trilogy, either from the outset or by the end of the third film. Thus we’re including things such as the Toy Story and Indiana Jones trilogies, even though those continued on with further entries.

Hmm… it seems that Zack Snyder’s Watchmen wasn’t so controversial after all. Although the film was great to every extent, it simply felt too modern for audiences who were just starting to fall in love with superhero movies like Iron Man.
Despite being an underrated film, many directors were involved with the project long before Zack Snyder took the reins. Notable among them was The Bourne Supremacy director Paul Greengrass and his idea of the opening scene of Watchmen was dark dark!

Paul Greengrass’ fame skyrocketed through the roof after he directed the 2004 film The Bourne Supremacy starring Matt Damon in the lead role. Just a year after that, Greengrass was working on the 2009 DC project Watchmen.

Although the partnership was short-lived, Paul Greengrass had already envisioned how the film was going to be.

15 years after its theatrical release, Zack Snyder's "Watchmen" occupies a curious spot in the history of comic book superhero cinema. While bleak blockbusters like "Dune: Part Two" and "Oppenheimer" might be all the rage in 2024, that wasn't the case when Snyder's film arrived in 2009. The success of "Iron Man" a year earlier signaled a shift in audiences' tastes. The brooding, auteur-led offerings of the 2000s (like "Hulk" and "The Dark Knight") would soon after give way to the studio-mandated crowd-pleasing spectacles of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Snyder's relentlessly downbeat and violent interpretation of writer Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons' equally grim milestone graphic novel suddenly felt wildly out of tempo with the genre, as did his subsequent vision for the now-kaput DC Extended Universe.

Hawkeye star Jeremy Renner is game and ready to reprise his role as Aaron Cross in The Bourne Legacy sequel if it ever gets the green light. The movie was notoriously known for underperforming at the box office, and it also did not help that reviews from fans and critics were less-than-stellar.

When news broke last November that Universal Pictures was developing a sixth Bourne movie with “All Quiet on the Western Front” director Edward Berger, fans were left wondering if Matt Damon would be returning to his iconic action franchise. The Bourne series, which includes four films headlined by Damon and one by Jeremy Renner, has earned $1.6 billion worldwide. Damon’s last outing was 2016’s “Jason Bourne.”
Damon made a recent appearance on “The Late Show” and stopped short of confirming he’ll star in the new Bourne movie when the topic was brought up by host Stephen Colbert. However, the actor showered incoming Bourne director Edward Berger with praise and sounded hopeful about appearing in the film. Berger had a career breakthrough in 2022 with his Netflix adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” which earned nine Oscar nominations, including best picture, and won for international feature and three more prizes.

The Bourne Supremacy is the second film in the Jason Bourne series, which is based on the novels of the same name by Robert Ludlum. It is the sequel to the first film, called The Bourne Identity, and digs more into the backstory of the highly skilled former CIA assassin suffering from amnesia. The whole series is notable for its realistic and gritty action sequences — particularly the hand-to-hand combat and car chases. Unlike many other action films of its time, The Bourne Supremacy pioneered close-quarters combat and practical effects. While the direction of Paul Greengrass is worth mentioning, the...

Hollywood loves a franchise. Soon, our nostalgia obsessed monoculture will be treated to a "Harry Potter" reboot series and a definitely necessary "Twilight" revival. Now, we've learned that a new Jason Bourne movie is on the way from "All Quiet on the Western Front" director Edward Berger. As it stands, Berger is the only one attached to the project and it's still very early days. But the news of a potential new Bourne movie should be exciting for fans of the franchise and action movies in general. Either that, or they'll be dismayed that Universal is churning out yet another installment after 2016's disappointing "Jason Bourne" and 2012's exquisitely forgettable "The Bourne Legacy."
The Bourne movies are a great example of a studio squeezing every bit of life out of a franchise it possibly can. After "The Bourne Identity" successfully adapted Robert Ludlum's novels to the big screen, we...

Earlier this year, we heard that Warner Bros. had come out the winner of an intense bidding war over the film rights to author T.J. Newman’s second novel, Drowning: The Rescue Of Flight 1421 (you can pick up a copy at This Link). Now Deadline reports that Paul Greengrass – whose credits include The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, Jason Bourne, United 93, 22 July, Green Zone, Captain Phillips, and News of the World – has signed on to write, direct, and produce the film adaptation of Drowning.
Newman’s novel tells the following story: A plane crashes in the Pacific Ocean six minutes after takeoff and is flooded after an explosion during evacuation. A dozen survivors sink in a sealed part of the aircraft as it perches precariously on an undersea cliff 200 feet below the surface. Among them is an engineer and his 11-year-old daughter. Paul Greengrass will adapt and direct Drowning: The Rescue Of Flight 1421, based on Tj Newman’s book.

As the CIA characters overseeing the office monitors might say, “My god, it’s Jason Bourne!” TheWrap has learned that Universal has begun early development for what would be a sixth movie in the so-called Jason Bourne universe. Edward Berger, whose Netflix-distributed re-adaptation of “All Quiet on the Western Front” received nine Oscar nominations and won four, is in talks to possibly helm the next chapter.
There is no screenplay, nor has Matt Damon officially been approached, but the actor who starred in four of the five previous installments certainly has first right of refusal. Universal is in early development on a new movie about super spy Jason Bourne, with “All Quiet on the Western Front” filmmaker Edward Berger in talks to direct.

Sources familiar with the project have stressed that it’s still in early development, so any grand return to the world of Jason Borne may be far into the future. If you want to know what drove the mood of '00s action cinema, you need to look to one franchise: the Bourne movies. For a stretch of time there, Matt Damon's amnesiac super-spy took over the genre, and the franchise's low-fi, barrel-fisted, chaos-first and sense-later approach to storytelling forced a radical reinvention of how Hollywood produced movies like this. Even James Bond was forced to adapt. Over 20 years after the first film hit theaters, we've absorbed what this series was throwing down so thoroughly, so completely, that what was fresh and thrilling back then sometimes feels a bit standard now. Jason Bourne -- and those who wrote and directed his films -- raised the bar so effectively that everyone was forced to play catch-up.
Although the series has seemingly come to an end, it remains a subject of fascination among action aficionados. The baby-faced Damon, still fresh on the scene,...

Matt Damon once made the most of his money from these 2 movies
Damon has had a very lucrative career having starred in several successful film projects. But he credited two of his most well-known franchises for the financial stability that he’s enjoyed.
“The bulk of the money I’ve made in my career was from the Bourne and Oceans movies, but I never felt I was selling out on those movies or that I had to compromise,” Damon once told What’s On.
Damon has always spoken on how the success of the Bourne movies helped him do other meaningful films.

Paul Greengrass may no longer be a journalist, but he has successfully brought a journalistic style to both action films and historical dramas over his career. The filmmaker is best known for his hand-held, cinéma vérité style where the camera moves like a cameraman embedded in the scene, struggling to capture real events. His style is often imitated, though few are able to match the subtly precise way that Greengrass constructs his sequences through quick cutting and frenetic camerawork. Despite being famous for a specific filmmaking technique, Greengrass’ filmography is still quite diverse, which should be apparent in the gallery below.
He began his career working for the audacious British current affairs program “World in Action.” He transitioned to fiction filmmaking with a series of TV movies based on historical events. His breakout hit was the historical drama “Bloody Sunday,” chronicling the 1972 Bloody Sunday shootings. Greengrass was then hired to...

Matt Damon has few regrets — except turning down James Cameron’s 2009 “Avatar,” and he’s now explaining why.
The actor, who plays army general Leslie Groves in Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer,” detailed in a recent Chris Wallace interview why he had to walk away from starring in Cameron’s $2.8-billion-grossing original space epic. Damon previously said that his salary plus backend box office profits on “Avatar” would have netted the actor at least $250 million.
“I’m sure it’s the most money an actor ever turned down, you know?” said Damon, who at the time was under contract to complete the action-espionage “Bourne” series. By the time “Avatar” production ramped up, Damon had completed “The Bourne Identity,” “The Bourne Supremacy,” and was shooting 2007’s “The Bourne Ultimatum,” with “Legacy” and “Jason Bourne” still to come.

So, we’ve had the perennial discussion about which actor could or should be the next James Bond but what about the man behind the camera? Strangely, the conversation around which director should helm a Bond movie doesn’t seem to take off quite as much — but it certainly deserves to. With that in mind, here are 10 directors we’d love to see take charge of the next James Bond movie.
Christopher Nolan
The fans’ number one choice. Nolan’s movies are always events — from “The Dark Knight” all the way up to “Tenet” and the upcoming “Oppenheimer,” Nolan is one of the best technical directors around and he is an expert of melding exquisite action set-pieces into the most intriguing narrative stories. Several of his movies already evoke a sense of Bond, including his Batman trilogy, “Inception,” and “Tenet.” Nolan and Bond would be a marriage made in heaven.

The scene where 2012’s The Bourne Legacy first comes truly alive features neither parkour or car chases; it also lacks fisticuffs or a single gunshot; heck, it doesn’t even have Matt Damon. To be sure, the fourth (and generally ignored) film in the Jason Bourne franchise has its fair share of death-defying stunts and white-knuckle action. However, the movie really clicks to life when a coterie of bureaucrats gather inside a windowless room, sharing hushed whispers.
The scene is dominated by who was intended to be the series’ new big heavy, Col. Eric Bryer (Edward Norton), who is revealed to be the Director of the National Research Assay Group. This is essentially a fictional version of Darpa, the research and development agency that operates within the the U.S. Department of Defense and is responsible for developing emerging technologies for military use. In the world of Jason Bourne, that means the infamous “Operation Treadstone,...

Ti West has locked in an all-star cast for his Mia Goth-led A24 horror pic MaXXXine, with Elizabeth Debicki (Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3.), Moses Sumney (The Idol), Michelle Monaghan (Nanny), Bobby Cannavale (The Watcher), Lily Collins (Emily in Paris), Halsey (Americana), Giancarlo Esposito (Better Call Saul) and Kevin Bacon (City on a Hill) closing deals for roles.
MaXXXine is the third title in A24‘s first major horror franchise, on the heels of West’s films X and Pearl, both of which were released to much acclaim last year. The ’70s-set X had Goth pulling double duty as Maxine, who sees her pornography-shooting friends violently murdered in Texas, and one of their elderly assailants, Pearl. The latter film, set in 1918, meanwhile, served up an origin story for the latter villain character.

The sun never sets in the world of streaming. After a jam-packed March that saw both "Star Wars" and "Star Trek" series going head-to-head with "Ted Lasso" -- not to mention, the much-buzzed-about return of "Yellowjackets" and the final hurrah of the Shakespearean tragedy that is "Succession" — it seems April is angling to keep the party going. Between "Schmigadoon!" and "The Afterparty" coming back, "Barry" setting sail for the Grey Havens with its final season, and whatever the hell Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof have cooked up for us with "Mrs. Davis," next month won't be hurting for appointment TV.
Not about to be left in the dust by its competitors, Netflix has its own plans for April. In addition to its typical monthly smattering of non-exclusive titles, the streamer will be dropping a 30th anniversary "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" reunion special, "Once & Always," just to make all you Millennials...

So many great stories in history start out with the key players hating each other — as it is in Netflix and A24’s “Beef,” streaming on Netflix in April. Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) meet via parking lot bump turned action-movie car chase, their lives connecting and their road rage lingering in weeks and months after the incident. In reviewing the series, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said that “’Beef’ does a fine job balancing Amy and Danny’s practical intelligence and impractical passions; their bitterness toward the other driver ebbs and flows as their personal lives better or worsen, and it’s in these moments that the half-hour drama thrives.”
The series from Lee Sung Jin premieres on April 6. See below for more titles coming to Netflix in April 2023.

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we're breaking down one of the greatest car chases ever put to film in "The Bourne Supremacy.")
Movies and television in the early 2000s might as well be a time capsule, forever preserving a uniquely tumultuous time in U.S. and world history like a mosquito in amber. "The Lord of the Rings" movies will probably always be upheld as the earliest and most significant form of post-9/11 cinema, providing exactly the kind of fantasy escapism that so many audiences were suddenly desperate for on a cellular level. But on the extreme other end of the spectrum, one action franchise had no choice but to steer directly into the skid, addressing some of the most fraught and deeply uncomfortable aspects of the United States government that nobody wanted to talk about.

The first two recipients of the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Film Stunt Ensemble – 2007’s “The Bourne Ultimatum” and 2008’s “The Dark Knight” – were sequels directly derived from films released prior to the establishment of the category (2004’s “The Bourne Supremacy” and 2005’s “Batman Begins”). 14 years later, this short list could gain a third entrant if the long-awaited follow-up to 1986’s “Top Gun” – “Top Gun: Maverick” – prevails at the upcoming ceremony. After “Avengers: Endgame,” “Wonder Woman 1984,” and “No Time to Die,” it would be the fourth proper continuation film in a row to score a win here.
Picking up more than three decades after its predecessor left off, “Top Gun: Maverick” finds the ever-rebellious Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) fulfilling his new duty of teaching a younger generation of fighter pilots at the Navy school from which he graduated. As he leads them through a grueling training...

Oliver Wood, the British cinematographer behind "Face/Off," "Morbius," and the original "Bourne" movie trilogy, has died at the age of 80. Variety reports that Wood passed away in his Hollywood home on Monday, February 13, after battling cancer. He is survived by his wife, Sabine, and three children: Katharine, Fiona, and Emerson.
Following early credits on films like William Friedkin's "To Live and Die in L.A." and Leonard Kastle's "The Honeymoon Killers," Wood became the director of photography for one of the most influential TV shows of all time, "Miami Vice," and was behind the camera for 53 episodes in total. From there, he found his niche in the genres of action and comedy, and in the places where they overlapped.
Wood's first film credit after "Miami Vice" was "Die Hard 2," and the '90s saw him working on the comedy sequels "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey" and "Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit,...
