Despite what Hollywood wants us to believe, not every movie ever made needs a sequel. This did not stop the studios from trying their hardest to churn them out, leaving movie fans with only one solution: forget the sequel exists. It’s a useful technique, but, ironically, it doesn’t work on the worst films. We can say to each other, for example, that Highlander II: The Quickening never happened all we want. In our broken, battered souls though, we know it exists. And it sucks so much. The memory endures, like a cinematic kidney stone.
Trying to forget works best on sequels so middling, or cynically shoveled out that there’s not much for our memories to grab on to. If we do remember them, it’s with a befuddled “how the hell did that happen?” or a “they got A-list actors for that?” kind of awe. And then we forget about them again.

Fandoms everywhere can now rejoice, for in October Our Flag Means Death finally returns to our screens for its second season. Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi will be romancing the high seas once more thanks to an enormous outpouring of love and support from the show’s fans. The safety of the cult favorite is not yet known beyond season two, but if this one is as good as the first, it certainly won’t be for lack of trying.

One name that is unquestionably synonymous with horror movies is Wes Craven. Mr. Craven is responsible for several game-changing films in the genre. His early career provided raw, grindhouse-esque classics like The Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes. He skyrocketed into pop culture with fantasy horror like A Nightmare on Elm Street, then revitalized the genre in a waning era with the meta-slasher satire Scream.
Actor Jamie Kennedy recently appeared on the Inside of You podcast that’s hosted by Smallville‘s Michael Rosenbaum. Kennedy had played the iconic horror obsessive, Randy, in both Scream and Scream 2, which Wes helmed. According to ScreenRant, the Son of the Mask star would talk about how he discovered a specific method that Craven kept himself motivated in filmmaking.
“His place was like this, where he would have memorabilia from all his different movies. Next to his bed was this little frame of something.

With so many horrible sequels available, picking the ten worst sequels of all time was challenging. Indeed, there have been numerous instances where sequels have fallen far short of their original counterparts, making them infamous examples of ‘how not to do a sequel.’
Thankfully, viewers on IMDb did most of the work for us, sharing their valuable insights and ratings, which we’ve used to compile this list.
What follows is a painstakingly curated breakdown of each terrible sequel. We delve into what specifically made these follow-ups lackluster and disappointing. Some of these sequels found their unfortunate place on this list despite being birthed from incredibly successful and well-received franchises.
They had every ingredient for success – a captive audience, proven characters, and established lore, yet they managed to fumble. Conversely, others continued on an already rocky path of subpar predecessor films, cementing their series as characterized by chronic cinematic failure.

One of the only good things to come out of Hollywood's obsession with grinding a good thing into the ground via unrelenting sequels are some of the titles. Whether characters are getting "back in the habit" or "dying harder," there's nothing better than a bonkers sequel subtitle. And while a subtitle isn't necessarily indicative of a film being good or bad, Hollywood has certainly churned out its share of sequels that truly didn't need to happen. Does anyone remember "Son Of The Mask" or "Jaws: The Revenge?" Hell, 20th Century Fox even greenlit "Elektra," a sequel to 2003's universally panned "Daredevil," just because the first movie made an okay profit despite being arguably one of the worst superhero movies ever made.
Over the years, and especially, in our nostalgia-obsessed present moment, we've been treated to all-manner of legacy sequel — some good, some terrible — as Hollywood increasingly turns to existing IPs...

Jack Osbourne, who discovery+ fans are accustomed to seeing hunting for ghosts and, most recently, Bigfoot, has taken on a new mission in his latest two-hour special – investigating an infamous paranormal hotspot where UFOs frequent, animal mutilation has been documented and, oh yeah, there’ve been reports of alien abduction.
But what Osbourne ends up seeing – and catching on camera – goes above and beyond his wildest expectations and leaves him saying, “We came here looking for UFOs and ended up finding ‘other things.’”
In “Jack Osbourne’s Night of Terror: UFOs,” the “Portals to Hell” star teams up with a couple of his actor friends, Jason Mewes and Jamie Kennedy, with the trio heading off to Utah’s Uinta Basin, where the notoriously creepy and mysterious Skinwalker Ranch sits. Jim Carrey turns 60 years old in just thirteen months, and the milestone could prove pivotal towards determining the trajectory of his career. The two-time Golden Globe winner has more than shown himself to be a phenomenal dramatic actor with the right material, but he built his entire brand on broad studio comedies that relied on his effortless charisma and natural sense of comic timing.
Of course, the sight of a guy in his sixties mugging for the camera and taking pratfalls would be something strange to see, and over the next couple of years, we could find Carrey blazing a brand new trail or simply continue to rely on what’s worked for him over the last quarter of a century. His performance in Sonic the Hedgehog was certainly a minor return to the glory days of old, and he’ll no doubt be back for the sequel, while more recently,...

Comedy sequels are arguably the most difficult type of follow-up to pull off, and the risk level increases the longer the gap since the first movie. Action and thriller franchises are almost expected to rehash the same plot and character beats over and over again, whereas a series designed entirely to generate laughs from the audience can’t exactly deliver the same joke a handful of times and expect it to remain fresh.
For every 22 Jump Street, Bill & Ted Face the Music or Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm, there’s a Dumb and Dumber To, Zoolander 2 or Son of the Mask at the other end of the scale, and as the years pass, it becomes more and more difficult to justify the existence of a long-delayed sequel to an established comedy hit.

1994’s The Mask was not just one of the biggest movies of that year, but it also helped launch Jim Carrey into the Hollywood big leagues. As you’d imagine, then, there were plans for more films at the time, but these ultimately stalled. There was a Carrey-less sequel called Son of the Mask in 2005, but no one needs to be reminded of that. All these years later, though, it looks like the Mask is coming back to the big screen. And it might not be just a one-off.
According to sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who said Carrey was returning as the green-headed goofball for a cameo in Space Jam: A New Legacy before it was confirmed via some leaked footage – Warner Bros. is actually planning on making two new Mask movies, so that a trilogy can be formed when factoring in the 1994 original. For most of his career following Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Jim Carrey tended to avoid making sequels to his hit movies, but that didn’t stop the studios from producing them anyway, even without his involvement. Based on how Son of the Mask, Evan Almighty and Ace Ventura Jr.: Pet Detective turned out, however, his decision proved to be a very wise one.
That being said, the 58 year-old appears to have softened his stance in recent years after returning to the role of Lloyd Christmas two decades later in Dumb and Dumber To, while Sonic the Hedgehog’s post-credits scene seemed to make it clear that Carrey’s Robotnik would be coming back for the sequel. Not to mention that there’ve been whispers that another Ace Ventura outing is on the cards for the actor, too.

Like how the headgear itself was trapped in a trunk for a thousand years at the beginning of the first movie, The Mask franchise has laid dormant for a long time, but it looks like it’s finally about to awaken. We know Warner Bros. is dusting off the character for a cameo in Space Jam 2, with Jim Carrey likely voicing the part. What’s more, this is probably a test run for a fully-fledged Mask 2, which would bring back Carrey as Stanley Ipkiss in the flesh for a belated sequel.
But would a follow-up to the 1994 original all these years later work? Perhaps, and co-creator Mike Richardson has previously teased that the studio is working on something darker, a concept that could gain extra traction now that DC’s Joker performed so well last year. 1994 was the year that Jim Carrey seemingly came out of nowhere to become one of the biggest movie stars on the planet, with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask and Dumb and Dumber all arriving in theaters within the space of ten months and earning over $700 million at the box office combined. Carrey has since made sequels to two of those breakout hits, but we never got a follow-up to The Mask unless you count 2005’s Son of the Mask, which most people don’t because it was awful.
However, rumors of a long-delayed sequel have started picking up steam recently, with creator Mike Richardson revealing his interest in a female-driven spinoff, while we’ve previously reported that there was also interest in bringing Carrey back for both a second big screen outing as Stanley Ipkiss and an adult-orientated animated series on HBO Max.

We’ve been hearing a lot about Warner Bros.’ plans for The Mask over the past few months. Though the franchise, based around a mystical mask that gives the wearer reality-altering powers, has been dormant for a long while, the studio is in the midst of resuscitating it. As we’ve reported before, WB’s main plan is to get Jim Carrey back as Stanley Ipkiss to make this a proper sequel to the hit 1994 original. But it seems he won’t be the only A-list star on board.
According to sources close to Wgtc – the same ones who told us that the Mask will cameo in Space Jam 2 and Disney is developing a live-action Robin Hood, both of which we now know to be true – the studio is hoping to get a high profile name attached to play the villain and one actor they’re eyeing is Dwayne Johnson.

Over the weekend, we reported the surprise news that Jim Carrey would be getting back into the green as the Mask for Space Jam 2. It seems that Warner Bros. wants to stuff the sequel with as many cameos from their extensive library of IP as possible, with leaked photos also pegging the Joker, the Wicked Witch of the West and Pennywise as appearing in the film. In addition, we’ve heard that WB would like to get Robert Pattinson’s Batman in the movie, and potentially even Superman.
That’s quite a wishlist, but Jim Carrey returning for a short scene seems like it’s practically confirmed now. That’s quite a wishlist, but Jim Carrey returning for a short scene seems like it’s practically confirmed now. While talk of a female-led Mask spinoff has been percolating over the last few months, nothing official has yet to come to fruition. Nevertheless, if you’ve been hankering to see the return of everybody’s favourite green-faced hero, then we may have some good news for you.
You see, according to sources close to We Got This Covered – the same ones who told us that Bill Murray is returning in Ghostbusters: Afterlife and that another Scream movie is in the works, both of which are now confirmed – the Dark Horse Comics superhero will be making an appearance in the upcoming live action/animation hybrid, Space Jam 2. Yes, you read that right.
Even though Jim Carrey’s awkward-but-loveable super-powered protagonist will only be a CGI recreation, Carrey is apparently returning to record voice work for the iconic character. Specifically, our sources say that he’ll be seen as a...

Like the Norse mask at the bottom of the sea in the original film, The Mask franchise has been lying dormant for a long while. However, there’s suddenly been a lot of buzz about a potential new movie in the series, which is based on the Dark Horse comic book character, over the past few months. Jim Carrey famously brought green-faced hero Stanley Ipkiss to cartoonish life in 1994’s hit comedy, but would he be willing to star in a sequel?
Well, it seems the actor isn’t ruling it out, but he does have one key stipulation. While speaking with ComicBook.com to promote his role in Sonic the Hedgehog, Carrey was asked if he’d consider making a new Mask movie. The star revealed that he’d be open to it, although he’d need the involvement of a talented filmmaker with a bold vision to really...

Does anyone remember The Mask movie from 1994 with Jim Carrey and Cameron Diaz? The movie helped both actors establish their careers as leading stars and grossed over $350 million around the world with a $23 million budget, while also earning Carrey a Golden Globe nomination for best actor in a comedy or musical and an Academy Award nomination for best visual effects. The success of the movie spawned a sequel a little over a decade later, Son of the Mask, but we’d rather just pretend that movie never happened. While the movie did much for the careers of Carrey

Jim Carrey fans will remember the 1994 madcap comedy The Mask, which starred the actor at the height of his powers as lowly everyman Stanley Ipkiss, who turns into a green-faced live-action cartoon character when he dons a mystical mask. It was a huge hit at the time, but what’s not widely known is that the film was a loose adaptation of a Dark Horse Comics series.
The Mask franchise has been dormant on screen ever since 2005’s belated sequel Son of the Mask, starring Jamie Kennedy in place of Carrey, flopped hard, but it seems that it might be making a return in the near future and will go in a fresh new direction. Creator Mike Richardson revealed to Forbes recently that he has an actress in mind to star in a female-led reboot, teasing:

After more than a decade stuck in development hell, “Artemis Fowl” now has a confirmed release date: August 9, 2019. That’s sure to come as good news to the sci-fi/fantasy series’ many fans, who number in the tens of millions. Here’s everything you need to know about the long-gestating adaptation of Eoin Colfer’s books:

That appealing description comes courtesy of the author himself, who’s written eight novels in the long-running series; though it’s been compared to “Harry Potter” as well, Colfer disagrees with that comparison. Jessica Alba‘s fledgling consumer-products startup, Honest Co., could be acquired by industry giant Uniliver. The maker of Dove soaps and Axe body sprays is in talks with Honest for a deal valued at over $1 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday. However, the figure is significantly lower than the $1.7 billion at which Honest was valued in a fundraising round last year. While the talks are at an early stage, Honest hasn’t ruled out instead opting for an initial public offering instead, according to WSJ insiders. When you look back on your childhood through a rainbow haze of nostalgia and Kool-Aid binges, everything looks pretty darn spectacular. Life was simpler, Saturday morning cartoons were your heaviest commitment, Twizzlers were a lot cheaper, and every movie was super awesome.
How awesome were they, though, when you finally recover from your Kool-Aid hangover? Look, it's tough to rag on kids' movies -- no one wants to be the person to call out adorable anthropomorphic animals. It's not a good look. But we're here to do the hard jobs: To save our children from suffering through some horrible sequels. To save you from watching the same terrible movie 12 times per week with tiny, obsessive humans. To cut through the crap once and for all.

Jim Carrey scored a huge hit with The Mask, yet the comic books leave the door open for more films. Here's why they could work...
In some ways, 1994's The Mask was ahead of its time. Sure, when we try to pick out the greatest comic-book adaptations today, we're spoilt for choice: with Marvel entering the third phase of their cinematic universe, transforming formerly obscure characters into mainstream icons, and DC's Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice ready to kick their movies up into a higher gear, the list of adaptations looks set to grow and grow.
Still, movies based on comic books remain largely superhero-centric, which is a shame considering the huge range of fantastic titles out there deserving of a larger audience. Just over 20 years ago, particularly in the UK, comic books and their respective characters were generally seen as childish, goofy, for nerds only – and the lack...

Does Hollywood try to remake/sequelize/franchise-extend every single one of its successful movies? Sometimes it feels that way, but there’s a little more nuance to studio practices than that. If you’re looking for meaning in this summer’s blockbuster season – not always easy – you could call it Dr. JurassicMax or How Hollywood Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Reboot. Rebooting franchises isn’t as common, well-received, or lucrative as you might think. Today let’s look briefly at the history of the reboot – and how this summer changed it.
First, what technically counts as a reboot? One school would say that anytime the cast shuffles, it’s a reboot, meaning we’re now on the second reboot (and third iteration) of Spider-Man films. That’s pretty rare; far more often, duration between films is the deciding factor, and it just doesn’t feel right to slap...

Everyone has presumably sat down to a movie so inherently terrible that afterwards they’ve turned to a friend and said: “Well, that’s the last we’ll be seeing of that actor.”
Yes, movies have been killing careers in Hollywood for a long ‘ol time – Showgirls destroyed Elizabeth Berkley, Son of the Mask finished Jamie Kennedy, Superman Returns ended Brandon Routh’s chances at stardom, and The Love Guru finished off Mike Meyers.
It takes a seriously terrible work of filmic awfulness to end an entire career, but it does happen… from time to time. Be it a fresh-faced newcomer or an established star clinging to his or her last ounces of fame, a really bad movie has the power to destroy everything it touches – directors, writers, actors; a truly naff flick is something akin to career suicide.
What follows, then, is a list of 8 movies...

No matter how much we love movie sequels, a franchise isn’t always the answer. When a follow-up to a smash hit is bad, they can butcher the legacy of a great movie with their subpar stories and tired catchphrases. Not every movie can be as wonderfully self-aware as 22 Jump Street, nor can every sequel be Terminator 2 — widely regarded as better than its predecessor. The movies we’re looking at are the ones we never wanted, and ones that failed to do the originals the justice they deserved. From the offensive Sex and the City 2 to the cringeworthy Son of the Mask, these are the sequels we always knew we never wanted.
It’s fair to say Anchorman 2 didn’t live up to the hype of the first film. Maybe it would have been better if the cast could weigh in on current news?

It’s been talked about to death all over the internet: Hollywood loves sequels. That’s just the name of the game. If something is a success, you do it again. They don’t call it show business for nothing, and often a sequel (and franchise) can mean big bucks for the studio. Unfortunately, this can have a negative effect on the original film that either tarnishes the film’s legacy, or blatantly milks an idea for all it’s worth.
What people don’t often discuss is the fact that the studios aren’t the only ones to blame. That falls upon the audience as well, who often love something so much that they can’t help but ask for more. Nowadays, before a film is even released, the first question on everyone’s lips is: when is the sequel coming out?
I’ve decided to take a look...

There's obviously a market out there for sequels — just look at the summer movie release schedule and you'll find at least one a week. And hey, sometimes a film leaves us wondering what happens next.
But sometimes there are films that had no need for a part two, where audiences left the theater the first go-round and said, "I'm good." And in the case of these ten films, we've got the numbers to prove it!
Hollywood, heed our wisdom: Sometimes it's best to just leave well enough alone.
10. 'Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights' (2004) — Sequel to 'Dirty Dancing' (1987)
• "Dirty Dancing": $62,811,299
• "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights": $14,140,215
So you had the time of your life in 1987? Big deal. You can't relive the magic 17 years later by conceiving a half-hearted retread set against the backdrop of revolutionary Cuba. Really, this film has nothing to do with the original, save for a brief Patrick Swayze cameo.

It is actually going to happen. In an appearance on the Nerdist podcast, Peter Farrelly officially announced a sequel to 1994's "Dumb and Dumber" is ready to go. Some might say, "Hey, there already was a sequel called 'Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd'." However, that was a prequel and didn't have the Farrelly brothers, Jim Carrey or Jeff Daniels involved, so it's in the same realm as that other Carrey sequel, "Son of the Mask."
The new sequel will indeed star Carrey and Daniels in the parts they made famous. There are no details about what the film will entail just yet, but the movie will film later in the Summer, for a 2014 release.
This will be only the second time Carrey has appeared in a sequel to one of his movies. The first was "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls." He was originally asked to reprise...

Earlier this month, RiffTrax, which is owned by the guys behind "Mystery Science Theater 3000," asked its users to vote for the Worst Movie of All Time. IGN then stepped in and urged its users to visit the site and vote. After several weeks, over 500,000 people voted and RiffTrax now has a list consisting of 25 movies. Taking first place is "The Twilight Saga" with 35,593 votes. "Batman and Robin" took second place, followed by "Catwoman." The list is filled with some terrible films, but also movies that were considered disappointing that probably don't deserve to be among the worst movies of all time. Check out the full list below. 1. The Twilight Saga (35,593 votes) 2. Batman and Robin (27,929 votes) 3. Catwoman (22,544 votes) 4. Spider-Man 3 (19,152 votes) 5. Last Airbender (18,086 votes) 6. Super Mario Bros (17,755 votes) 7. Just when you thought that everything from the '80s and '90s had already been rebooted and rehashed a few hundred times over by now, along comes someone to remind us that there's still at least one more property that has yet to be tapped. Believe it or not, former TV commercial personality turned movie star Ernest P. Worrell is headed back to the big screen... knowhutImean, Vern? Original creator John Cherry is bringing back the classic character that he created in the mid-'80s and then essentially ran into the ground until the death of star Jim Varney in 2000. The new movie is called Son of Ernest and will obviously star a different actor donning the denim vest. Hey, what could possibly go wrong? According to Variety, production company Ruckusfilm is bringing back Ernest with the help of screenwriter Dan Ewen, who recently wrote a potential upcoming Farrelly Brothers movie called Dear Satan.

Author Seth Grahame-Smith says the upcoming film adaptation of his satirical horror novel "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter" will be very R-rated.
"We don’t kill a baby in the film, but we are an R-rated film. There are creatures getting their heads cut off, naked women interacting with vampires, limbs flying, and blood splatters. You know, there’s a dark, gory violence to the movie. We certainly don’t shy away from that" he tells Film School Rejects.
Grahame-Smith, who adapted his own work and penned next month's film version of classic 60's gothic soap "Dark Shadows", is also working on the screenplay for a "Beetlejuice" sequel. Asked about that, he says he wouldn't have even attempted the project if he'd had any fear of screwing it up.
"What I keep telling people is I don’t want to do it unless we’re really sure that it’s worthy.

A few months back, I found out the wonderful news that I am going to be a father. Over recent weeks I have found that my curiosity to re-visit pregnancy based films has grown. It has become very apparent to me that this is a topic rife for discovery, but generally falls into the same sort of brackets – fear of what will come. After watching and hearing my wife go through endless weeks of morning / all day sickness, I can understand why most film-makers pick up on the scary side of the gestation period. But there are also so many wonderful parts of the process. After paying a bit of attention, and seeing mine and my wife’s own experiences reflected on celluloid, I have noticed that despite their similarities, there are some clear divides within the overall ‘experiences’ of the Hollywood birthing process.
Below is a collection of films which all revolve around pregnancy.

In ‘celebration’ of the release of Adam Sandler’s latest comedy Jack & Jill (which is already out in the Us, alas UK readers will have to wait until February 3rd, but at least then you can take your loved ones to it on Valentine’s Day!), I thought I’d take a look at 10 other films I am baffled ever got the green light. I mean, watching the trailer for Jack & Jill one might think it was a deleted scene from the film Funny People in which Sandler mocked the kind of ridiculous high concept comedies that he is so often guilty of making. We thought after pushing them to extremes with spoof clips in that movie which included Sandler’s head magicked onto a baby’s body, it seemed like Sandler was both affectionately lampooning some of his early career decisions and also putting to rest that kind of...

It’s been busy over here at FM, what with the launch of our Graveyard Examiner and everything, but last weekend I promised more in-depth coverage of Universal’s Eyegore Awards, so here it is!
Upon entering Universal Studios’ Globe Theatre, there could be no doubt that you had just walked into a horror awards show. A quick glance around the room revealed an eclectic group of guests – eating a wide variety of delicious food – mingling among the eerily candlelit tables and surrounded by haunting rows of corn reminiscent of oh-so-many beloved horror flicks.
Now, allow me to digress for a moment. I’m afraid that when some of you were reading that last paragraph you may have been distracted by phrases like ‘eerie candlelight’ and ‘haunting rows of corn’ and skipped right over the quip about the amazing food. Even if the rest of the evening had been a...

This past Friday night, September 23rd, the Halloween season officially kicked off in style with the 2011 Chiller Eyegore Awards held at the Globe Theater at Universal Studios in Hollywood as part of the opening night of Universal's Halloween Horror Nights. Hosted by genre veteran and previous Eyegore winner Corey Feldman (who was joined on stage by a wisecracking zombie scarecrow), many of horror's biggest names came out to celebrate our favorite time of year and pay homage to several of the genre's biggest contributors and newcomers alike.
The evening kicked off with actor Thomas Jane (The Mist, Deep Blue Sea, "Hung") presenting an Eyegore statue to long-time friend David Arquette, who's been best known to horror fans as Deputy Dwight "Dewey" Riley from Wes Craven's Scream since its release almost 15 years ago now.
Arquette graciously accepted his award, saying "I really want to thank you all. This is a...
