If Chris Evans hated one thing about his role as Captain America, it was the time he spent making public appearances for the promotions. Evans shared that his anxiety made him a less-than-ideal candidate for such appearances. He mostly avoided appearing in shows where he had to perform in front of an audience, which meant he was one of the few MCU lead stars not to host an SNL episode.

When Kevin Daniels got a call from his agent’s mom that she’d pitched him for the lead role in a film she was producing, it didn’t take much for him to say “yes.”
“We had a zoom meeting and we kind of laughed and told some jokes and they were like, ‘Hey, you want to come down to Savannah?’ and I was like, ‘I like Savannah. That sounds nice,’” Daniels tells The Hollywood Reporter.
The film was Not Another Church Movie, a spoof comedy of Tyler Perry’s Madea series, written, directed and produced by Johnny Mack (Real Husbands of Hollywood), which is set to hit theaters on May 10. In it, Daniels, stars as the hardworking Taylor Pherry, a man given a mission directly from God (Jamie Foxx) to write a story about his dysfunctional family to save billionaire talk show host Hoprah Windfall’s plummeting TV ratings.

10. Not Another Teen Movie (2001)
Tired of the repetitive teen rom-coms of the 1990s, director Joel Gallen decided to make his own — and arguably, one of the best by far. In perhaps the most classic teen movie tale, a popular high-school jock gets challenged by his friends to turn a shy and bullied girl into a prom queen… And hopelessly falls in love with her.
You can watch Not Another Teen Movie on Hulu, Netflix, and Prime Video.
9. Scary Movie (2000)
A very similar thought occurred to Keenen Ivory Wayans, the director of Scary Movie who pumped his flick full with the most popular horror cliches of the 1990s — and still produced a greatly entertaining film. A group of teenagers who accidentally killed a man is haunted by a mysterious mumbling killer who picks them off one by one.
You can watch Scary Movie on Max, Hulu, Netflix, and Prime Video.

It's been more than 10 years since the world was subjected to the last "Scary Movie" sequel, but as is the case with any famous horror movie villain, it's practically impossible to keep this series down forever. And now Paramount Pictures plans to breathe new life into this particular franchise. The studio will be teaming up with Miramax to resurrect the "Scary Movie" franchise with a brand new installment. Production begins this fall, and the film will be in theaters in 2025.
Variety reports that producer Neal H. Moritz, who is best known for producing the "Fast and Furious" movies for Universal, will be producing this new iteration. Moritz was not directly associated with any of the previous five "Scary Movie" films, but interestingly, he did produce a couple of horror flicks that were parodied in those early versions, including "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and "Urban Legend." When mother-daughter showrunners Heather Conkie and Alexandra Clarke began working on “The Way Home” with creator Marly Reed, they didn’t intentionally set their sites on the world of “Alice in Wonderland.” Instead, it came completely natural.
“As we started looking at this show and the concept, it became so much clearer to us how oddly echoing it all was to the book, and we sort of thought well, if it’s there, let’s use it. It’s a story about a girl that literally falls down the rabbit hole into a whole other world and is trying to make sense of what she’s seeing and of her adventures there,” Alexandra tells Variety. With seamless comparisons, they began bringing physical similarities and themes from the 1865 novel into Season 1.

Fun trivia: one of the working titles for Wes Craven's 1996 slasher satire "Scream" was "Scary Movie." Filmmaker Keenan Ivory Wayans got wind of this trivia, and decided in 2000 to make a film called "Scary Movie" intended to satirize the popularity of "Scream." The late 1990s were a curious time in popular culture, as there weren't too many dominant horror trends. Popular music was beginning to comment on its own self-awareness (see: "Flagpole Sitta") and irony became ironic. Self-reflection went from a healthy Socratic exercise into a loop of eternal recurrence. By 2000, we became so busy commenting on our own commentaries, that it was hard to see where we started. This is where "Scary Movie" dropped in.
Make no mistake, "Scary Movie" is unfunny, as are its many sequels. They're cheap, homophobic, and vulgar. Wayans took his model from spoof filmmakers like Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker, but aimed to make something...

It's been nearly forty years, but people still remember "The A-Team." The action adventure series went on for five seasons, but stuck around in the public consciousness for much, much longer. People still remember the theme song, the cartoonish violence, the catchphrases. But although many viewers throughout the 2000s wanted a revival of the show, the TV series itself never came back.
Instead, we got a feature film in 2010 starring an updated A-Team, with the characters being veterans of the Iraq War instead of veterans of Vietnam. The film underperformed at the box office, however, and they never made a sequel. Unlike "21 Jump Street," a franchise where the later movies have now long-since overshadowed the TV show for most younger viewers, when people of all ages today think of "The A-Team," they're still almost certainly thinking of the show.
So what have the cast members been up to since...

Molly Ringwald was the queen of eighties teen movies. Her films with John Hughes, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink have all stood the test of time and are just as believed by audiences in 2023 as they were nearly forty years ago. But, despite being one of the biggest names of the decade, Ringwald found herself typecast for many years, with more adult roles in movies like Fresh Horses and The Pick-Up Artist falling flat. She also, notoriously, turned down the lead in Pretty Woman, the movie which made Julia Roberts a household name.
In the nineties, Ringwald struggled to break free of the Brat Pack label, even if she was never actually a part of that clique, but eventually embraced her place in the pop culture with a well-received cameo in Not Another Teen Movie (which people forget starred Chris Evans). More recently, Ringwald has developed...

I am Jack’s trailer for “Bottoms.”
On Tuesday, Orion released the first trailer for the new film from “Shiva Baby” director Emma Seligman with “Shiva Baby” star Rachel Sennott and “The Bear” Emmy contender Ayo Edebiri. Sennott and Seligman also co-wrote the script.
The twisted high school comedy focuses on two students (Sennott and Edebiri) who start a school fight club in an effort to win the attention of their more popular classmates. Here’s the official plot summary:
“‘Bottoms,’ a refreshingly unique raunchy comedy, focuses on two girls, Pj and Josie, who start a fight club as a way to lose their virginities to cheerleaders. Their bizarre plan works. The fight club gains traction and soon the most popular girls in school are beating each other up in the name of self-defense. A women’s self-defense club in a heightened toxic heterosexual high school? Welcome to “Bottoms.”
Rachel Sennott co-wrote the high school comedy with “Shiva Baby” director Emma Seligman. Sennott plays queer teen Pj opposite “The Bear” breakout Ayo Edebiri, who portrays Pj’s childhood bestie Josie. The duo lust after their respective crushes, Isabel (Havana Rose Liu) and Brittany (Kaia Gerber), while trying to navigate teendom in the shadow of quarterback Jeff (Nicholas Galitzine) and his cronie, teammate Tim (Miles Fowler).
Pj and Josie accidentally found a female fight club, co-run by misfit outcast Hazel (Ruby Cruz), with the hopes to befriend (and hook up) with cheerleaders under the guise of feminism. Marshawn Lynch, Dagmara Dominczyk, and Punkie Johnson also star in the highly anticipated, R-rated summer comedy.

At last count, 11 notable actors from the Marvel Cinematic Universe have hosted "Saturday Night Live." Several of them were famous prior to their appearances in the MCU, but they still count: Natalie Portman hosted "SNL" prior to playing Jane Foster in the "Thor" movies, Paul Rudd first hosted in 2008, seven years before "Ant-Man," and Samuel L. Jackson first hosted back in 1998. Scarlett Johansson has hosted the show six times (!), and, of course, Robert Downey, Jr. was actually a regular cast member on "SNL" during its notoriously panned 1985-'86 season. That so many Marvel actors hosted "SNL" prior to their superhero shenanigans merely seems to indicate that the casting directors at the MCU are savvy about snagging big stars. Surprisingly, Willem Dafoe -- who was folded into the MCU in "Spider-Man: No Way Home" -- didn't host "SNL" until 2022.
Other MCU actors, however, didn't appear on "SNL" until it was time to promote their movies.

It appears that there is a reason why Chris Evans has yet to make his Saturday Night Live hosting debut.
During an Et Canada interview that published Tuesday with Evans and Ana de Armas discussing their upcoming action comedy Ghosted, the conversation turned to the fact that the Blonde actress will mark her first time leading SNL with its upcoming April 15 episode. When asked if he would be up for a cameo in the episode that features Karol G as the musical guest, Evans made it clear that a brief appearance would be far more appealing to him than actually hosting the NBC sketch comedy series.
“Well, now a cameo I can handle,” Evans replied. “I’ve avoided hosting SNL like the plague for years now just because I’m so scared. It’s terrifying to me.”

One of the most eagerly anticipated series of the spring is coming to Netflix on April 6. Ali Wong and Steven Yeun star in “Beef” as strangers involved in a road-rage incident. But rather than let insurance sort it out, the two drivers morph into lunatics bent on revenge, resulting in increasingly harrowing — and hilarious — circumstances.
Watch the trailer for “Beef”:
More than just a meme, on April 13, Netflix unveils limited series “Florida Man,” which follows a struggling ex-cop (played by Edgar Ramírez) forced to return to his home state of Florida to find a Philly mobster’s runaway girlfriend. What should be a quick gig becomes a wildly spiraling journey into buried family secrets and an increasingly futile attempt to do the right thing in a place where so much is wrong.

Also coming to Netflix in April will be the final chapter of “Firefly Lane.

So many great stories in history start out with the key players hating each other — as it is in Netflix and A24’s “Beef,” streaming on Netflix in April. Amy (Ali Wong) and Danny (Steven Yeun) meet via parking lot bump turned action-movie car chase, their lives connecting and their road rage lingering in weeks and months after the incident. In reviewing the series, IndieWire’s Ben Travers said that “’Beef’ does a fine job balancing Amy and Danny’s practical intelligence and impractical passions; their bitterness toward the other driver ebbs and flows as their personal lives better or worsen, and it’s in these moments that the half-hour drama thrives.”

Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival. MGM releases the film in select theaters on Friday, August 25, with expansion to follow on Friday, September 1.
The easiest way to describe Emma Seligman’s sophomore feature, “Bottoms”? It’s hilariously weird. Director Seligman and star Rachel Sennott reunite in their follow-up to “Shiva Baby,” taking as hard a pivot from their 2020 breakout (and a script they co-wrote) as they come.
This is a queer teen sex comedy that wears its influences on its sleeve, yet still resembles no other film. It cements Seligman and Sennott as two of the most exciting young voices in cinema today, delivering a hit in the making with a tone that brings movies like “Wet Hot American Summer” and “Not Another Teen Movie” to a whole new generation.

Film fans have expressed their joy over the practice of changing the titles of English-language Hollywood films to other English phrases for international audiences.
The online discussion began when Juan Buis, a writer and designer, shared a collection of movie posters in their original forms alongside their versions when advertised in France.

It's a natural occurrence in art that trends, fads, subgenres, and the like must run their course. That doesn't necessarily mean they go away forever, just that their heyday is contained to a finite period of time.
Some trends are so of a moment, however, that even if their genre never goes away, the aesthetics particular to their peak can't come back completely. That's especially true of the 1980s action hero, a figure that only could have emerged during that decade of excess and one that had to say farewell once the more introspective 1990s rolled around.
As with most trends, it's debatable where to objectively define their start — and endpoints. A usually reliable bellwether is when a trend or genre is parodied or satirized. If the parody is external, it may signal the end (as 1980's "Airplane!" did regarding the disaster movie) or simply the genre's popularity (as with...

People Magazine has named Chris Evans as its Sexiest Man Alive for 2022.
Evan’s selection was announced Monday night on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The 41-year-old actor, famed for playing Captain America across several films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, inherits the mantle from fellow MCU star Paul Rudd.
“My mom will be so happy,” Evans told People. “She’s proud of everything I do but this is something she can really brag about.”
Evans got his start on television in the Fox comedy-drama series Opposite Sex in 2000, and made his feature debut the following year in Not Another Teen Movie. His breakthrough Hollywood role came in Fox’s Fantastic Four (2005) where he played Johnny Storm/Human Torch. Outside of superhero movies, Evans has garnered positive notices for films such as Danny Boyle’s Sunshine (2007), Bong Joon-ho’s Snowpiercer (2013) and Rian Johnson...

Alright everyone, we’ve got all the spookies of October out of our system. Time to turn our eye to Hulu’s list of new releases for November 2022 to celebrate a new fall tradition of…hunky male dancers?
That’s right, Hulu’s biggest original title for November 2022 is Welcome to Chippendales on Nov. 22. This limited series stars Kumail Nanjiani (Eternals) as Somen “Steve” Banerjee, the real life founder of the original Chippendales club of exotic male dancers. After hits like The Dropout and Pam & Tommy, Hulu likely has high hopes for this one.
The other big original series of note this month is FX’s Fleishman is in Trouble on Nov. 17. This is based on a 2019 novel of the same name and stars Jesse Eisenberg as the titular Toby Fleischman in crisis. Before that, Hulu is teaming up with ABC for some true crime docuseries like Where is Private Dulaney?...

In February of this year Hulu unleashed the true crime limited series “Pam & Tommy.” The Emmy-nominated series prompted audiences to look at the nature of celebrity culture, misogyny, and complicity in the wake of the infamous 1990s sex tape that shaped the internet. This month Robert Siegel, one-half of the creative team that brought “Pam & Tommy” to screens, returns with a similar true-life story: “Welcome to Chippendales.”
“Welcome to Chippendales” follows Somen “Steve” Banerjee’s (Kumail Nanjiani) rise and fall in the adult entertainment industry. Matt Shakman directs the series, with Nanjiani, his wife Emily V. Gordon, co-showrunner and writer Siegel, co-showrunner Jenni Konner, and writer Rajiv Joseph among the executive producers.
Per the official synopsis, the sprawling true crime saga “Welcome to Chippendales” tells the outrageous true story of Banerjee, an Indian immigrant who became the unlikely founder of the world’s greatest male-stripping empire. The series...

Since 2008, movie stars get minted by superhero movies. Chris Evans had appeared in "Not Another Teen Movie," Danny Boyle's "Sunshine," and "Fantastic Four" before he donned a suit and shield in "Captain America: The First Avenger." That made him Chris Evans. The casting of Robert Pattinson as Batman drew fan ire on Twitter, but mostly because many remembered him as a brooding, glittery vampire. Pattinson collaborated with the electric Safdie Brothers and Robert Eggers before putting the cape and cowl on. He's a superstar once more.

Buzz Lightyear is getting a bit of a makeover in Disney Pixar's 2022 movie "Lightyear". The new animated film, a prequel to the Toy Story franchise, centers on the real astronaut Buzz Lightyear and tells the story that inspired the space-loving action figure we grew to love in the Toy Story movies. Tim Allen has long voiced the toy Buzz. However, along with looking slightly different (aka more real), Lightyear's Buzz Lightyear will also sound slightly different because Allen is out and Chris Evans is in.
Evans will take over the iconic role of Buzz when the film comes out next June, and Captain America himself is pretty much through the roof with excitement. In a statement, per Entertainment Weekly, Evans said, "The phrase 'a dream come true' gets thrown around a lot, but I've never meant it more in my life. Anyone who knows me...

Before he was Captain America, Chris Evans was just a guy spoofing fellow heartthrobs Freddie Prinze Jr. and James Van Der Beek. Evans' 2001 comedy Not Another Teen Movie, a riff on hit films like She's All That, Can't Hardly Wait and Cruel Intentions, just hit Netflix, reminding us that Steve Rogers has always been pretty damn funny, no matter what Tony Stark might think. And the future Marvel star wasn't the only young actor taking on his first major film role in the Joel Gallen-directed movie, with Grey's Anatomy and Supergirl fan-fan-favorite Chyler Leigh starring opposite Evans in the flick that became a surprise hit with a $66 million box office gross. After a few relatively quiet months in the late spring and early summer, things are finally starting to heat up on Netflix, as the streaming giant complements its must-see TV lineup (“I Think You Should Leave!” “Too Hot to Handle: Brazil!”) with its most exciting original film project in a minute: Leigh Janiak’s “Fear Street Trilogy.” Beyond that, Netflix’s July slate is highlighted by the Karen Gillan/Michelle Yeoh action spectacle “Gunpowder Milkshake,” the star-studded Jojo Moyes adaptation “The Last Letter from Your Lover,” and a massive assortment of unseen international titles that run the gamut from Germany’s “Blood Red Sky” (about a plane hijacking interrupted by vampires) to Indonesia’s “A Perfect Fit”.

It’s blockbuster season and Amazon Prime is celebrating by bringing a major action film to its stream.
That’s right, Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2021 is highlighted by none other than The Tomorrow War on July 2. The year is 2051 and mankind is locked in a vicious war against an alien species. Our only hope is to go back in time and find…Chris Pratt. Ok, perhaps that’s a little reductive of the film’s plot. Future humanity also comes back to bring Sam Richardson to the future.
In terms of originals, there isn’t much else to speak of on Amazon Prime this month. The only other major release is The Pursuit of Love on July 30. This BBC series is directed by Emily Mortimer and takes place during the WWII era and follows two cousins as they navigate their lives. Lily James and Andrew Scott star.

The “Airplane!” school of chock-full-of-jokes conceptual parody, with its fourth-wall-smashing stupido-smart goofiness, had a pretty impressive run. It ruled for several decades, spawning everything from the “Airplane!” creators’ own “Naked Gun” franchise — to me, the media-age Marx Brothers-worthy masterpiece of the form — to the Wayans brothers’ “Scary Movie” franchise to several dozen comedies, from “Hot Shots!” to “National Lampoon’s Loaded Weapon 1” to “Not Another Teen Movie,” that skewered genre after genre after genre with the puckish satiric glee that most of them deserved. But the “Airplane!” school didn’t stick around long enough to mount a full-scale comic attack on the superhero movie. Which is too bad, since it could have been stupendous. What comic-book films, with their authoritarian heroism and CGI bombast, just about cry out for is a parody that’s massively scaled in its high-flying mockery.

Deepfake videos are becoming increasingly popular, seeing the faces of characters swapped out with others who the editor think might be appropriate. A particularly disturbingly effective take on this is having Chris Evans as superpowered villain Homelander from The Boys, which you can check out for yourself above.
Most of the caped characters on the Amazon series are cynical expies of popular and recognizable heroes from DC and Marvel, with Homelander principally being a stand-in for Superman that explores what the Big Blue Boy Scout might be like if he lacked the decency and compassion that typify the Kansas farm boy. As the leader and most powerful member of superteam The Seven, his character is a mix between an insatiable hunger for adulation and sociopathic tendencies that threaten to obliterate the mask of humanity he wears when interacting with people. Antony Starr nails the balancing act on the fine line between the two states,...

But you may want to wait on watching a few of those so that you can make room for a new addition packing a lot of punch and even more heart.

Chris Evans might be seen as a great dramatic actor these days, after a decade of playing Captain America in the McU, but before he landed the part of the Sentinel of Liberty, his most notable roles tended to be in comedies. Even his turn as the Human Torch in the Fantastic Four films is pretty light-hearted. If you’re a fan looking to familiarize yourself with Evans’ earlier work though, then Netflix is on hand to help you out, as a forgotten pic from his past has just been dropped onto the site.
This Tuesday, September 1st, the streaming service added 2001’s Not Another Teen Movie. Released when he was just 20 years old, the comedy flick featured Evans’ first leading role. Funnily enough, his co-star and love interest in the film, Chyler Leigh, would also go on to achieve fame in the superhero world as Alex Danvers in TV’s Supergirl.

After a quiet summer punctuated with a handful of culture-shaking hits, Netflix is ramping up its original content as we roll into the fall. The result is the most unusual, diverse, and even controversial slate the streamer has rolled out all year. Charlie Kaufman’s mind-bending and extraordinary “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” has to be at the top of the list, but a handful of other must-see movies will be vying for your attention, from well-vetted festival standouts like “Cuties” (recently the target of an uninformed online smear campaign) to vital documentaries like Sophia Nahli Allison’s “Love Song for Latasha” (about the 15-year-old Black girl whose murder sparked the L.A. Riots), and unknown quantities like Antonio Campos’ star-studded Southern gothic “The Devil All the Time” and the Millie Bobby Brown detective comedy “Enola Holmes.” This month’s library titles include recent favorites like Paul Dano’s “Wildlife...

September marks the start of the traditional TV season. For many networks and cable channels, however, this will be an usual season with the coronavirus pandemic halting production leaving behind paltry fall lineups. Over on Netflix, however, things continue to operate at high capacity.
Netflix is rolling out quite a few original series and movies for its new releases in September 2020. The Hillary Swank-starring space drama Away premieres on September 4. That is followed by a whole host of intriguing concepts including Julie and the Phantoms (Sept. 10), Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous (Sept. 18), and even the Nurse Ratched origin story series called Ratched (Sept. 18).
The film side of things is just as packed. Romantic comedy Love, Guaranteed premieres on Sept. 3, Charlie Kaufman’s latest effort I’m Thinking of Ending Things arrives on Sept. 4, and the Tom Holland-starring thriller The Devil All the Time bows on Sept. 16. That’s not even to mention Enola Holmes on Sept.

As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.
