The global pandemic may have brought the world to a standstill, but it didn’t stop hitmaker Bruna Papandrea from plowing ahead with her bustling production slate. The Australian-born producer was set to begin shooting Toni Colette starrer Pieces of Her in Vancouver, Nine Perfect Strangers with Nicole Kidman in L.A. and Anatomy of a Scandal in London, when Covid-19 descended upon the world last year.
Undeterred, tenacious and a decisive problem-solver, Papandrea was able to pivot the productions of Pieces of Her and Nine Perfect Strangers, convincing cast and crew of both projects to relocate to Australia’s relatively Covid-free east coast (Anatomy of a Scandal later finished in London) for the many months much of the world was in lockdown. For Papandrea, whose company Made Up Stories has offices in L.A.—where she lives with her producer husband and eight-year-old twins—and Sydney, this quick swivel...

Eric Bana and Robert Connolly. (Photo: Rebecca Bana)
Eleven years since they first collaborated on Romulus, My Father, Eric Bana and Robert Connolly are teaming up again for The Dry, the feature film adaptation of Jane Harper’s bestselling novel.
Bana will play Aaron Falk, a federal cop who returns to his drought-ravaged hometown after an absence of 20 years to attend the funeral of his childhood friend Luke, whom the local police believe killed his wife and child before taking his own life.
Falk reluctantly agrees to investigate the crime to determine whether it was more than a murder-suicide, which opens an old wound — the death of teenager Ellie Deacon, who was a friend of Falk and Luke.
He begins to suspect these two crimes are connected but as he struggles to prove Luke’s innocence and his own he faces the community’s prejudice and pent-up rage.

Please Don't Take the Gay Out of 'Vampire Academy' Why and how two straight (and fictional) women are the love story of my life. By Conor Gallagher "Her fangs bit into me, hard, and I cried out at the brief flare of pain. Then it faded, replaced by a wonderful, golden joy that spread through my body. It was better than any of the times I'd been drunk or high. Better than sex or so I imagined, since I'd never done it. It was a blanket of pure, refined pleasure, wrapping me up and promising everything would be right in the world." That is from the third page of Vampire Academy, the first novel in a series whose film adaptation comes out this Friday, even though the books have been coming out since 2007. The whole universe falls into the same vague teen, paranormal romance [...]...

Attention war film buffs: there are three exciting, scheduled new releases to put in your diaries for 2013. Each is based on a true story, two from WW2 and one from Vietnam, so it will be interesting to see – if you are a stickler for ‘authenticity’ like me – just how closely each sticks to the historical facts.
First up is The Railway Man from Australian director Jonathan Teplitzky (Better Than Sex, 2000; Burning Man, 2011), which stars Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman, is currently in post-production, and is set for release in Australia in April 2013 and then worldwide in May.
It tells the story of Eric Lomax, a young British Army signals officer who was captured by the Japanese at the fall of Singapore in 1942 then forced to work as a slave-labourer on the notorious Burma-Thailand railway – and promises to be a much more ‘authentic’ film than David Lean’s 1957 blockbuster, The Bridge on the River Kwai.

Rachel Weisz has a knack for finding herself in the right place at the right time, particularly when the right place involves a hunky British actor.

Burning Man, Jonathan Teplitzky’s third cinematic offering, proves a small budget Australian film can stand tall on a global stage. Georgina Pearson spoke with Teplitzky about the film’s creation.
Within our society there is a common underlying thread. That unspoken C word, only ever briefly discussed or tentatively skirted during dinner party conversation. Despite a growing abundance of people living with or affected by cancer, it still remains the elephant in the room. Jonathan Teplitzky’s, Burning Man does no such tiptoeing.
Trailing the wake of one man’s grief, it provides a harrowing snapshot of the devastation such a disease can cause. Based in-part on Teplitzky’s personal experience, viewers are plunged headfirst into the fragmented world of Tom (Matthew Goode), a British chef living in Bondi whose wife is dying of breast cancer. Unconventionally raw, Burning Man showcases the often ignored emotional fallibility of the male.

[1] Oscar winner Colin Firth has just added another project to his slate: the epic drama The Railway Man. The film will be directed by Jonathan Teplitzky (Better Than Sex, Burning Man) from Andy Paterson and Frank Cottrell Boyce, adapted from Eric Lomax's memoir of the same title. Lomax's book focuses on the torture he experienced at the hands of the Japanese during his time working on the Burma-Siam Railroad (a.k.a. the bridge on the River Kwai) as a World War II Pow. Upon learning decades later that one of his torturers was still alive, Lomax arranged to meet with him. The story certainly sounds compelling and intense, and worthy of an actor of Firth's talent. The Railway Man is set to begin shooting February in Great Britain, Thailand, and Australia. [Variety [2]] After the jump, Shirley Maclaine, Alan Arkin, and Vera Farmiga team up for a spin on Romeo & Juliet,...

[Once again, a round of applause to Mark Popham.] Ever since getting a screener of Bts: Better Than Sex in the mail, I kept bragging to people about the Taiwanese teen sex comedy I had to watch. I had to leave work right on time to watch this Taiwanese teen sex comedy! I couldn't go to trivia, because there it was, a Taiwanese teen sex comedy sword of Damocles, hanging over my head. In my mind, I built it up to be some sort of zany Taiwanese Porky's, and of course it had to pull the rug out from under me, being both less zany and more genuinely weird than I had expected. It is also, by its very nature, extremely hard to recap, as...

The New York Asian Film Festival has announced that its tenth anniversary edition will open on July 1 with the North American premiere of Yoshimasa Ishibashi's Milocrorze: A Love Story ("one solid slab of psychedelia," promises the festival; image above) and close on July 14 with the New York premiere of Na Hong-Jin's The Yellow Sea (aka The Murderer), which has just screened at Cannes in Un Certain Regard (see the roundup).
There'll be two Centerpiece Presentations, Benny Chan's Shaolin, with Andy Lau, Nic Tse and Jackie Chan, and Takashi Miike's Ninja Kids!!! — which, you may remember Danny Kasman caught in Cannes, and got quite a nice kick out of it, too. The festival will also be screening Miike's "director's cut" of 13 Assassins.

The Tribeca Film Festival has the stars. The New York Film Festival has the award winners. But the New York Asian Film Festival has the coolest, boldest, and strangest genre movies, and that's why it holds a special place in my heart. While most festivals specialize in quote-unquote arthouse fare, Nyaff brings the Asian mainstream -- the stuff that would almost never play here otherwise -- to America.
We're big fans of the Nyaff at IFC and we're looking forward to another excellent edition this year. The lineup was just announced and it looks stacked. It includes a few superb films I saw at last year's Fantastic Fest, including the entertaining exploitation documentary "Machete Maidens Unleashed" from "Not Quite Hollywood" director Mark Hartley. The stuff I'm jazzed to see for the first time includes the world premiere of Takashi Miike's "Ninja Kids!!!" (their exclamation points, not mine), "Ocean Heaven,...

Margaret Pomeranz delivered a powerful keynote speech at the opening of the Spaa Conference yesterday in Sydney, and Encore has the full transcript of her meditation on the state of Australian film and television – and why Government and audiences should appreciate the arts a little more.
I’m extremely grateful to Spaa for inviting me to give this keynote speech today. It is the Hector Crawford Memorial Lecture and I want to honour the man today. Hector put Australian television on the map, he made Australian accents acceptable in the media. Do you remember when we could only stomach New Zealanders reading our news because they sounded more English than us? Brian Henderson was a prime example. But more than that Hector validated Australian writers, Australian actors, directors, designers, a whole Australian infrastructure, Some of those people are still working today. In a very significant way Hector created an industry,...

Brand Clock, by Tanner Woodford, chronicling some of the 1,035 brand identities he encountered on October 14, 2008
Three words. Billions of dollars. If you look at Nike revenues, the big money set in consistently after 1989, the year of the great "Just do it." Did the words define the moment, or did they then drive the machine?
"There are some things money can't buy. For everything else, there's MasterCard." Without question, these twelve words reversed the fortunes of the brand. "Think small," "A diamond is forever," "Got milk?" Words you could take to the bank.
When a company makes a brand promise in a tagline, it's committing to a relationship. With accountability. It's a bit like saying "I do." But to really understand what's going on, you have to think about what a company is.
Companies start life with a birth certificate--incorporation. Growing up, they can fool around--Yahoo and Facebook are swapping corporate fluids right now.

It doesn't look like John Woo will be returning to Hollywood anytime soon. After a string of not-so-great Western films, Woo returned to China and delivered the massive two-part epic Red Cliff. I've only seen the first film of the Chinese release (haven't yet seen the condensed most other countries got), and while it certainly isn't perfect, it towers above anything Woo delivered while in Hollywood. Now we have a first look at his next project, Jianyu Jianghu (also known for now as Rain of Swords In The Pugilistic World), which stars Michelle Yeoh. Woo will be co-directing the film with Su Chao-Bin (Silk, Better Than Sex). They'll be joined by longtime producer bud Terrence Chang. The cast also includes Chang Chen, Kelly Lin, and Barbie Hsu. There's no official English title yet, but I suspect they'll run with something similar to Rain of Swords. It's apparently a wuxia film...

Assume Crash Positions for Boeing-boeing at Florida Rep!
Florida Repertory Theatre announced the opening of its High Flying 12th season with one of Broadway's hottest comedies, Boeing-Boeing.
Open now Boeing-Boeing tells the story of a swingin' American in Paris and the three beautiful stewardesses he calls fiancée, fiancée and fiancée.
"Boeing-Boeing is one of the funniest plays of all time, and we're very excited to kick our new season off with such a brilliant comedy," said Florida Rep Producing Artistic Director and Boeing-Boeing director, Robert Cacioppo. "Florida Rep is only one of eight or nine theatres in America fortunate enough to get the rights to produce Boeing-Boeing, so Southwest Florida audiences are very lucky."
Boeing-Boeing is a sidesplitting comedy that soars in the stratosphere, and is first-class entertainment that will have audiences unfastening their seat belts and rolling in the aisles. Set in 1960's Paris, it is the hilarious story of Bernard,...
