There is a reason Am I Ok? had to wait two long years since its Sundance premiere in 2022. It’s a relatively vain turn-of-the-century character study that summarizes an intimate issue, resolving everything within 90 minutes or less. That’s a shame because the film could have used an extra 30 minutes to explore three endearing performances that are so much better than the material.
The problem is not the script. It’s the fact that Tig Notaro, a signature comedian of her generation, fails to generate the type of comedy that makes her so popular in Am I Ok?. The final result has heart, and the chemistry between the two characters is off the charts. Yet, that’s used as a plot device to move the story along instead of creating something more meaningful.

Comedy feels like it's in a delicate state these days. Not only are studios avoiding tentpole comedy movies for the most part, but the onslaught of what many perceive as "cancel culture" has resulted in a little more caution when it comes to telling jokes, whether that's on the big screen or in comedy clubs. While there has been a lot of admirable progress with regards to cultural issues in comedy, the argument could be made that there is such a thing as being too sensitive, especially when it comes to an art form that is well-known for mining laughter from irreverence and provocation.
This careful approach to comedy has resulted in a lot of retrospective analysis of comedies from yesteryear, much of which often results in people saying, "You could never make that movie today." This has been applied to everything from "Blazing Saddles" (typically from people who don't...

Actress Cameron Diaz has given her fans her top bit of advice for a happy relationship. The ‘Me, Myself and Irene’ star, 51, tied the knot with Benji Madden in 2015 and has continued to gush about her man and their relationship.
The Hollywood star has provided a bit of advice she thinks is key – sleep in separate bedrooms, reports Mirror.co.uk.
Despite the ‘Shrek’ actress recognising it’s a controversial idea, she is adamant it’s a genius idea and is urging people to “normalise” the way of thinking.
“We should normalise separate bedrooms,” Cameron told the Lipstick on the Rim podcast. “To me, I would literally, I have my house, you have yours. We have the family house in the middle. I will go and sleep in my room. You go sleep in your room. I’m fine. And we have the bedroom in the middle that we can convene in for our relations.

For a generation of moviegoers, the Farrelly Brothers name means something. Specifically, it means a very pointed combination of gross-out comedy and emotional sentiment — films that are more than happy to dabble in literal excrement and ask you honestly shed a little tear over the characters embarking on some kind of emotional journey. The headlines and the buzz are always about the nastiest gags and grossest moments (she puts what in her hair?), but audiences often who showed up hoping to be appalled often found themselves lulled into something weirdly gentle and sweet. Sometimes, the combination doesn't work at all and the result is an unpleasant, tonal disaster. But when it does work? Well, that's when you get something that feels very specific to Peter and Bobby Farrelly, two of the most memorably mainstream, lowbrow auteurs to emerge from the '90s.

Comedian Jim Carrey is no stranger to method acting. But those around him noticed that the comedian tended to go too far when immersing himself in his roles. So much so that he was cautioned to give up his method acting or else real harm might come his way.

Julian Barry, whose 1971 Broadway play and 1974 movie, both titled Lenny and telling the story of legendary comic Lenny Bruce, died Tuesday at his home in Beverly Hills. He was 92.
His death was reported to The New York Times by his daughter Julia Barry, who said he died in his sleep and had been under medical care for congestive heart failure and late-stage kidney disease.
Although most widely known for his highly influential Bruce projects, which earned considerable acclaim for the writer and his title stars — Cliff Gorman on stage, Dustin Hoffman on screen — Barry’s career extended to other projects that caught the public’s attention in their day. He wrote Rhinoceros, the 1974 film adaptation of Eugène Ionesco’s play starring Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel, a movie that has grown somewhat in esteem since its initial critical dismissal, and the 1978 Faye Dunaway vehicle Eyes of Laura Mars, which has not.

One day, Hollywood will finally realise that marginalised people deserve to be at the centre of their own stories. Until then, we’ve got Champions – the latest film in which a bigot is patiently taught not to be a bigot by the very targets of his ignorance, while we’re all expected to stand up and applaud his bravery. It’s a sports comedy, directed by Bobby Farrelly, in which Woody Harrelson’s disgraced basketball coach Marcus is charged with community service after a drunk driving incident. For the next 90 days, he’ll head up a local team of intellectually disabled adults, with an eye to helping them land a spot at the Special Olympics.
With his brother Peter, Farrelly spent the 1990s and early 2000s making occasionally funny, largely offensive comedies like There’s Something About Mary (1998) and Me, Myself & Irene (2000). Champions, Bobby’s first solo project, exists at...

Prime Video has taken the global distribution rights to the latest film from Oscar-winning director Peter Farrelly. “Ricky Stanicky” will be the “Green Book” director’s first R-rated comedy since “Hall Pass” in early 2011; his brother and ’90s-era co-director Bobby Farrelly will not be involved. The picture will star Zac Efron, John Cena and Jermaine Fowler, and will begin production this month in Australia.
The picture concerns three friends who invent a fictional character to avoid unwanted situations but then must hire an actor to portray that fabricated friend when their respective significant others start to smell a rat. Producers include Paul Currie of Footloose Productions and Thorsten Schumacher of Rocket Science in association with John Jacobs of Smart Entertainment. The screenplay was penned by Farrelly, Brian Jarvis and Jim Freeman from an original spec script by Jeff Bushnell and Steve Oedekerk.

Director Bobby Farrelly is re-teaming with his old "Kingpin" star, Woody Harrelson, for "Champions," a new comedy about a guy who becomes the court-ordered coach for a team of basketball players with intellectual disabilities.
In addition to "Kingpin," Farrelly, as one-half of the Farrelly brothers, co-wrote and/or co-directed such films as "Dumb and Dumber," "There's Something About Mary," "Me, Myself & Irene," and "Shallow Hal." Every movie star needs to play a gruff, fish-out-of-water coach in a heartwarming sports film at least once, and Woody Harrelson is getting that opportunity with “Champions,” a new comedy film from Bobby Farrelly. Focus Features debuted the official trailer for the upcoming film December 5.
In the film, “Cheers” and “True Detective” star Harrelson plays Marcus Aldridge, a temperamental minor-league basketball coach who gets fired from his position after a series of losses and winds up facing legal trouble after crashing into a police car. Ordered by the court to fulfill a community service requirement, he coaches a basketball team consisting of players with intellectual disabilities.
Initially apathetic about the assignment and unconvinced the group has any potential as a team, Marcus ends up motivated to whip the players into shape when he realizes that competing with them in the Special Olympics could be a step towards reclaiming his old job.

While trying to produce their first film, Bobby and Peter Farrelly (better known as the Farrelly Brothers) had to hide the name of the title just to get people interested in it. "Dumb & Dumber" was often sent to studios and agents titled "A Power Tool is Not a Toy," so they wouldn't discard the script. After the film's success in 1994, everything changed for the Farrelly Brothers. They would become a comedy tour de force, producing a string of hits in the 1990s and 2000s, including "There's Something About Mary" and "Me, Myself & Irene."

Peter Farrelly is reuniting with Amblin Partners, which was behind his Oscar-winning “Green Book,” for his next feature, “Super In Love.”
The film is described only as a comedy feature, but it will have an original script by Flint Wainess, who has landed on the Black List with his script “Linda and Monica” and is a consulting producer on “In the Dark.”
Plot details for “Super In Love” are being kept under wraps.
Jeb Brody, Amblin’s president of production, and Mia Maniscalco, SVP Creative Affairs, will oversee the project for the studio.
Peter Farrelly and Amblin last partnered on “Green Book,” which won three Oscars, including Best Picture, and earned over $320 million at the global box office. Farrelly himself won two Oscars for the film’s original screenplay and as a producer.
His return to comedy should be welcome news for people who are fans of his earlier movies with his brother Bobby Farrelly,...

Hey, remember when they released that picture of the CGI movie Sonic the Hedgehog and it was so freakish and unnerving that animators had to work overtime to fix it? Anywho, Sonic the Hedgehog is coming to Hulu this month.
The heroic blue hedgehog who just wants to go fast is far from the only exciting new film or TV show coming to Hulu in February 2021. The library titles are unusually packed this month. In addition to Sonic, the sublimely goofy Mars Attacks!, 2020 horror film Possessor, and the first six Star Trek films all arrive on Feb. 1. Later on in the month are Antebellum (Feb. 5) and Nomadland (Feb. 19).
It’s a good thing that the library titles are strong because Hulu isn’t brining many originals of note to the table in February 2021. Into the Dark continues on its spooky mission with the Valentine-centric Tentacles dropping on Feb. 12. That will...

November can be a slow month for streaming services. Amazon, however, is entering into 2020’s penultimate month with some steam.
Amazon is really beefing up its TV library in November 2020. Both Community (which arrives on Nov. 8) and Scrubs (Nov. 14) will be added to Amazon Prime this month and in the process complete the streaming trifecta: Netflix, Amazon, Hulu. That’s pretty impressive stuff for both shows. And then on the film side of things, November 1 sees the arrival of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Twilight, and the Underworld franchise. Somebody didn’t tell Amazon Spooky Season was over and bless them for it.
As for the originals, Alex Rider is the most intriguing TV series here. That is based on the British spy novel series and premieres on Nov. 13 on IMDb TV (which is available to all Prime subscribers). That will be followed by Steve McQueen’s Small Axe series on Nov.

Anthony Anderson’s Hollywood career has been consistently characterized by successful pivots, from scene-stealing comedic roles to searing dramatic turns to effervescent hosting duties and many disparate points in between. But even he couldn’t have predicted his latest foray into the unforeseen, as the first person to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the midst of a global pandemic.
“I was looking forward to the pomp and circumstance that surrounds anyone getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, because not just anyone can or will get that,” Anderson says.
The multi-hypenate hoped to celebrate with his family and closest friends in the typical high-profile public ceremony that usually accompanies the honor. But “unfortunately that type of event can’t happen because of what’s happening in the world right now.”
Rest assured, though, eventually he’ll bask directly in the glow of his personal landmark on Hollywood Boulevard.

Greetings from the land down under! On Wednesday, Anthony Anderson and Jerry O'Connell had a surprise Kangaroo Jack reunion during the Black-ish star's virtual visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live. As Anthony and host Jimmy Kimmel were catching up, the late night host asked if there were casts from the movie's he's been in that he'd want to reunite with. After listing classic films like The Departed and Me, Myself & Irene, he reminisced over the 2003 comedy. And before he knew it, Jerry appeared on the screen. "What's up, Jerry O?" Anthony exclaimed when he saw the Billions star, who was donning a red bandana over his mouth and channeling his character from the film. "Ant, I love...

At 34, Bridget doesn’t know what she wants, but she knows she doesn’t want a baby — not now, at least — and so she doesn’t hesitate to make the decision that might’ve served as the focal point of a different kind of film. In “Saint Frances,” getting an abortion is just one of the many things that happens to Bridget, and the casualness with which it’s presented will outrage some. That’s fine. But their outrage has been so oppressive for so long that it’s been silencing filmmakers’ ability to address something that nearly a quarter of adult American women have experienced.
As Bridget’s mom says in one of the film’s typically frank conversations, “It’s the truth, and women should talk about it more often.” Turns out there are a lot of things that have gone unsaid in movies until now, and “Saint Frances...

Actor Robert Forster‘s first film, 1967’s “Reflections in a Golden Eye,” starred Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando, who already were Hollywood legends. But he managed to make a splash on screen in the John Huston-directed dark-themed drama set in a 1940s U.S. Army post by playing a kinky soldier who enjoyed racing through the woods stark naked on top of a black stallion.
His final film, which opened on October 11 — the day he was dead from brain cancer at 78 — was “El Camino,” a spin-off of AMC’s crime series “Breaking Bad” released by Netflix, in which he reprised his role as Ed, a vacuum cleaner repairman who works undercover as a new identity expert who assists Bryan Cranston‘s Walter White. Cranston, who first met Forster when he worked as a special effects assistant on “Alligator” was among the many who paid tribute to his co-star:

Robert Forster, a character actor best known for “Twin Peaks” and his Oscar-nominated performance in Quentin Tarantino’s “Jackie Brown,” has died. He was 78.
The New York native, who suffered from brain cancer, died Friday in his Los Angeles home.
Forster made his first impression on Hollywood audiences in back-to-back movies set in the Army, the first being in 1967 playing the free-spirited, birthday-suit-loving Army private Ellgee Williams in John Huston’s “Reflections in a Golden Eye,” starring Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor. The next year, he played a half-breed scout in “The Stalking Moon” opposite Gregory Peck.

Coming to this review of Green Book days into the film’s theatrical release and months after its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, you've likely heard about some of the problems Peter Farrelly’s inversion of Driving Miss Daisy poses to the enlightened critic. Written and directed by white dudes, told from the perspective of an Italian-American hired as the chauffeur of a black concert pianist, and leading to a coda where the aesthete is a surprise guest at a reformed racist family’s dinner, Green Book is a cornucopia of problematics—a film which, from the outside at least, reeks of the pungence of white guilt. And we might ask, in a time where the discourse is so heavily influenced by future awards: what more attractive aroma lurks in the air? That Green Book flips the archetypes of a more regressive version of itself is almost besides the point.

This time around, it follows an aspiring cartoonist (Kennedy) who is not ready for fatherhood but finds himself raising a baby endowed with the powers of the mask of Loki. Scheduled for a summer production start, Mask is being directed by Larry Guterman from a script by Lance Khazei, Rob McKittrick and the team of Tom Gammill and Max Pross. There's Something About Mary (1998) creators Bobby and Peter Farrelly have apologized to mental health groups over the upset caused by their portrayal of schizophrenia in new movie Me, Myself & Irene (2000). In the film, Jim Carrey plays a policeman with a split personality - and groups such as The Alliance for the Mentally Ill claim it pokes fun at what is actually a very serious disease. But the Farrelly brothers say that wasn't their intention. A statement says, "We certainly in no way intended to make light of this situation. "We approached this movie as a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde movie and we're in no way trying to make any kind of statement about split personality disorder or schizophrenia. Bobby Farrelly explains, "The first time she was ever on the set we were filming Dumb and Dumber (1994). We had the Jeff Daniels scene when he was on the toilet and she was like, `This doesn't look good.'" But since then Mom has gotten used to their sense of humor to the point where she became an extra in their new movie, Me, Myself and Irene (2000). The Mask, The (1994) star insists on performing his own stunts for films - and often finds it a painful experience. He says, "If it means a bruise or a bang or possibly a sprained ankle if you do it wrong then I'd rather do it myself because the audience wants to know that it's you doing the bit." And while making the new Farrelly Brothers film Me, Myself and Irene (2000), he got in some particularly painful positions. He adds, "I was hurting myself every day. I would go home and go, `oh a jugular's open!' I was beat up pretty badly but in the moment you don't really think about it, you're just going for the comedy. The thing falling off the fence and flying down the hill, the hill was much steeper than anybody expected. It wasn't planned that I would fly back up into the frame and I sprained my ankle for real during the rehearsals of that scene. I spun over, jumped off my left foot to get back up into the frame and they caught me perfectly. I would've been killed if they had missed but it's a bit thrill seeking. It's X games."...

Here's an interesting trend. Seems Jim Carrey tends to meet his girlfriends while filming a Farrelly Brothers movie. He met his current flame, Renee Zellweger, on the set of Me, Myself and Irene (2000). Previously he co-starred with his former squeeze Lauren Holly in the Farrelly Brothers' film Dumb and Dumber (1994).
