In Netflix’s Scoop, Gillian Anderson plays Emily Maitlis, the real-life former BBC host who, on Nov. 16, 2019, left Prince Andrew squirming as she probed him over his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.
During the interview, Andrew (Rufus Sewell) infamously failed to distance himself from the convicted sex trafficker, only describing Epstein’s behavior as “unbecoming” and claiming innocence of his own allegations of sexual abuse on account of a cryptic condition in which he did not sweat. (Andrew’s accuser described him as being sweaty when they allegedly danced together at a London nightclub.)
Maitlis maintained her composure as she watched — and in many ways provoked — the train wreck in front of her. “It was exactly the right way for her to pitch it,” Anderson says.
The result made headlines across the globe and earned BBC’s Newsnight several awards. Scoop takes audiences behind the scenes of Maitlis’ and booker Sam McAlister...

The Crown may not be done after all. And Prince Andrew’s partly to thank. The success of Scoop, a Netflix movie about his 2019 Newsnight interview, has reportedly made executives at the streamer realize there are still more British royal family stories to tell. To that end, The Crown, which ended after six seasons in December 2023, may return to the small-screen with a prequel.
Netflix is looking to make a short-form prequel to ‘The Crown’
“When the sixth season was released at the end of 2023, some breathed a sigh of relief, thinking the controversial show had been put to bed for good,” Tatler reported. However, it looks like it may very well be on its way back. (The Crown ended after depicting now-King Charles III’s 2005 marriage to now-Queen Camilla.)

Longtime New York rapper Cam’ron is explaining his strange CNN appearance this week, where he gave a now-viral non sequitur during an interview in which he was repeatedly asked questions about beleaguered rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs.
Booked for a Newsnight segment that was to have CNN host Abby Phillip discussing the series of lawsuits filed against Combs, which include allegations of sex trafficking, drugging women, sexual misconduct and rape, the rapper who has been on the New York scene since the 1990s told her that he doesn’t know why he was booked for the segment, and then drank a male sexual enhancement drink on air and referenced “getting some cheeks.”
During the segment, Phillip asked him, regarding the controversial video CNN released Friday of rapper-mogul Diddy attacking his then-girlfriend, the artist Cassie, at a Los Angeles hotel in 2016: ”Did you recognize that kind of anger at all, from your experiences?...

The whole nation, and perhaps the world, may wish Prince Andrew to stay out of the public eye, but he’s got his own plans.
Maybe the Newsnight interview was unnecessary and a disaster, but what’s done is done. He’s lost his role as a working member of the Royal Family, and while he still lives comfortably enough, he no longer benefits from the royal grant.
However, some people would love it if he dropped his Hrh title, which he can now only use in private, and exit the Order of the Garter – the UK’s most senior order of chivalry – but well, he’s not complying. Above all, royal expert Richard Palmer believes the King won’t strip him of his titles for this reason.

King Charles III’s slimmed-down monarchy has caused a “huge void” in the British royal family’s “lineup,” according to a royal author. What was supposed to include the “strongest” members of the Windsor family now is a “limp” showing. Ahead, the “crisis” the royal family’s been dealing with since before the king and Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnoses. Plus, who is on the list of working royals.
The slimmed-down monarchy has left a ‘huge void’ in the ‘lineup’ of British royals
According to Omid Scobie, a royal commentator and author, King Charles’s slimmed-down monarchy isn’t the one he originally intended. In fact, far from it.
Instead of a “strong” showing, what’s left is a “huge void in the royal lineup,” he told ABC News Studio’s Impact x Nightline: The Crown in Crisis (via UsWeekly).

Sure, Scoop “upset” Princess Beatrice. But not as much as Amazon’s own depiction of Prince Andrew’s 2019 Newsnight interview is about to. The 35-year-old British royal is reportedly “dreading” A Very Royal Scandal’s release as she’s further “dragged” into the drama surrounding her father’s legendary interview.
Beatrice expects to be featured more prominently in ‘A Very Royal Scandal’ than ‘Scoop’
Although, like Scoop, A Very Royal Scandal focuses on her father’s 2019 Newsnight interview about Jeffrey Epstein that saw him lose patronages as well as working royal and Hrh [His Royal Highness] status, Beatrice is more concerned about Amazon’s depiction as opposed to Netflix’s.
The reason, per Ok! Magazine, is because Beatrice thinks she’ll feature more prominently compared to Scoop, in which actor Charity Wakefield played her in one brief scene.

It seems April 2024 isn’t off to a good start for Princess Beatrice ever since Netflix’s Scoop premiered. The 35-year-old British royal is portrayed—very briefly—in the film about her father, Prince Andrew’s 2019 Newsnight interview regarding his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. According to an expert, Beatrice is likely “annoyed and upset” she’s depicted in the film.
Beatrice will be ‘dreading’ the ‘difficult time ahead’ amid her portrayal in ‘Scoop’
Scoop debuted on April 5, 2024. With it came a depiction of Beatrice as her father, Andrew, played by Rufus Sewell, and his team negotiated with BBC Newsnight’s Sam McAlister (Billie Piper) and Emily Maitlis (Gillian Anderson).
The interview aired in November 2019. It resulted in Andrew losing his Hrh [His Royal Highness] status and being removed from the list of working royals.
Charity Wakefield plays Beatrice in Scoop, who’s seen in one scene attending a Buckingham Palace meeting.

Plot: An insider account of how the women of “Newsnight” secured Prince Andrew’s infamous 2019 interview about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Review: Sometimes, pursuing a news story is as fascinating as the story itself. From All The President’s Men to Spotlight, countless films have looked at the reporters and journalists who have investigated the most significant revelations of all time and have garnered awards for the recreation of the tireless journey. The distance between the event and the dramatization often reminds audiences of the stakes at play, but Scoop chronicles a news story that occurred just six years ago. Led by Billie Piper as the producer who secured the shocking interview alongside Gillian Anderson, Romola Garai, Keeley Hawes, and Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew, Scoop has some exciting stories from an insider’s point of view. Still, it fails to generate anything we did not already get from the broadcast itself.

Scoop is a well-made but hard-to-watch film, believe me that’s a good thing. The Netflix film does everything right from its pacing to its performances giving us an insight into the subject and people behind one of the most scandalous things ever to come out of the British Royal family.
Directed by Philip Martin, Scoop sheds some light on what went on behind the scenes of Prince Andrew‘s News Night interview with Emily Maitlis which was later described as less a car crash than “a plane crashing into an oil tanker, causing a tsunami, triggering a nuclear explosion.” Prince Andrew was a close friend of Jeffrey Epstein and was also accused of molesting an underage girl, but he is still walking freely.

Netflix doesn’t at all try to hold back from making fun of Prince Andrew in their latest film, Scoop. The Philip Martin-directed film is based on former BBC editor Sam McAlister’s book about securing one of the most sensational interviews of Prince Andrew in the history of the BBC. The context is rather grave, as the interview was focused on the grim subject of Andrew’s friendship with the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender. Billie Piper is electrifying as McAlister, and so is Gillian Anderson, who plays Emily Maitlis, the famous British journalist who took the interview. But it is Rufus Sewell who delivers the standout performance as the controversial Prince. However, the film still falls quite flat, as, at the end of the day, it doesn’t really offer anything substantial to the viewers. Despite all the brilliant performances, Scoop remains just another Netflix...

So, I think I could slip into it really well.”And the ‘Dead Hot’ actress is also keen to take on more “fantastical” roles or a sci-fi project. She said: “I can definitely see myself stepping into more fantastical worlds like the ones Yorgo Lanthimos creates.

Netflix’s “Scoop” is inspired by the real events behind the bold efforts of “Newsnight” booker Sam McAlister to secure an interview with Prince Andrew amidst the fallout he felt from his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
It traces the admirable behind-the-scenes teamwork of McAlister, journalist and interviewer Emily Maitlis (Gillian Anderson), editor Esme Wren (Romola Garai), producer Stewart Maclean (Richard Goulding) and ultimate fact-checker Freddy (Jordan Kouamé), as well as photographer Jae Donnolly (Connor Swindells).
High stakes, adrenaline and twists and turns make “Scoop” a compelling watch, in addition to the star-stacked cast that portrays all the real-life players.

When the 2019 Newsnight interview finally blew up the time bomb that was Prince Andrew’s friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, not all of the pieces came back down to Earth in the same place. The interview that the Duke of York’s team were hoping would charm the public and rid him of his “Randy Andy” reputation achieved the opposite. Viewers found Prince Andrew to be callous and unsympathetic, while his denials of wrongdoing failed to convince many.
What followed were legal proceedings, a substantial out-of-court settlement, and a great many job resignations. From the prince to his team and the journalists behind the interview, here’s where the major players as featured in Netflix’s Scoop were left.

Exclusive: Netflix’s dramatization of the BBC’s bombshell Prince Andrew interview is proving to be one of the streamer’s most discussed debuts in some time, but one person has largely kept her silence.
Emily Maitlis was sat opposite the Duke of York for that fateful exchange in 2019, winning plaudits and prizes for her piercing, methodical questioning of the British royal.
Maitlis has not said much about Scoop, partly because she has not been involved in the Netflix film, but also because her time has been spent authoring her own version of the story for Amazon.
Now, in an interview with Deadline, Maitlis has made some of her first comments about Netflix’s adaptation of a book by her former Newsnight running mate Sam McAlister.
“I’ve left them very much to do their own thing because I think the last thing they want is me peeking around the edges offering my [views],” Maitlis said.

On November 16, 2019, the BBC got a “scoop” that just might have saved Britain’s premier network for news. That is the night it aired its seemingly impossible “get” of Hrh Prince Andrew actually sitting down with the BBC’s signature news show, Newsnight, to talk about the raging scandal over his relationship with the notorious Jeffrey Epstein, as well as his alleged sexual encounters with Virginia Roberts. However, the facts of the matter, such as they were, are not at all what the new Netflix film Scoop is all about.
Instead, much like She Said, The Post, Spotlight and All the President’s Men, the emphasis here is on the reporters, four key woman journalists who incredibly negotiated a sit-down interview with Andrew when such a thing would be unthinkable. They pulled it all off just at a time when facts themselves were on trial and the future of legitimate newsgathering...

It makes sense that Netflix leapt at the chance to adapt Sam McAllister’s “Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interviews,” as the story that screenwriter Peter Moffat has pulled from it feels like nothing so much as an episode from season eight or nine of “The Crown” — the most compelling thing about this film might be the case it makes in support of the streamer’s decision to end that series after season six.

This was the interview in which he discussed his friendship with sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein, his inability to sweat, and the Woking branch of Pizza Express, and, in 50 fast minutes,...

Three years after winning an Emmy for portraying Margaret Thatcher, Gillian Anderson returns to British politics as a member of the fourth estate in “Scoop.” The Netflix film stars the actress as the “Newsnight” journalist Emily Maitlis, who sat down for a squirm-inducing interview with Prince Andrew, Duke of York, portrayed by a physically transformed Rufus Sewell. The actor has of late been playing an American politician on the streamer’s “The Diplomat.” Watch the full “Scoop” trailer below.
The trailer begins with a voiceover promising that “an hour of television can change everything.” The film follows Billie Piper’s producer Sam McAlister, who is determined to land this major sit-down despite being told she is “chasing a story we’re never gonna get.” Her zeal only intensifies when details about Andrew’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein become public knowledge. When she does score a clandestine meeting with Prince Andrew to win him over,...

Full trailer for Prince Andrew feature Scoop has landed.
The highly-anticipated Netflix movie tells the story of that notorious Newsnight interview, the one that saw the disgraced prince humiliated over his connections to Jeffrey Epstein and more generally over his conduct, birthing never-forgotten lines about Pizza Express and an inability to sweat.
Today’s trailer showcases Gillian Anderson as interviewer Emily Maitlis, Rufus Sewell as the prince and Billie Piper playing Sam McAlister, the BBC producer who secured the interview and wrote the book that the feature is based on.
Last week, Anderson and Sewell both revealed that they had initially turned down the roles, with The Crown star Anderson saying she thought she would “undoubtedly fail” if she took it on. “The opportunity to play her was a privilege and was daunting,” added Anderson.

The biggest scoop of the century is pinning the British royal family to a sex trafficking scandal, as relived in Netflix film “Scoop.”
The feature, directed by Philip Martin and based on former “Newsnight” producer Sam McAlister’s memoir “Scoops: Behind The Scenes of the BBC’s Most Shocking Interview,” stars Gillian Anderson as BBC anchor Emily Maitlis, who infamously interviewed a disgraced Prince Andrew (Rufus Sewell) about his ties to Jeffrey Epstein in 2019.
“Scoop” is written by Peter Moffatt and Geoff Bussetil, with Billie Piper starring as producer/author McAlister. Keeley Hawes and Romola Garai co-star.
The film debuts on Netflix, following the conclusion of royal family drama “The Crown” in 2023. To note, “Scoop” lead star Anderson appeared on “The Crown” as Margaret Thatcher.
“Scoop” centers on the behind-the-scenes push to land an interview with Prince Andrew after the royal was listed in court papers as part of a U.

“The Crown” may have ended last year, but Netflix has another royal drama in store.
The streamer has released the first trailer for “Scoop,” its feature-length dramatization of Prince Andrew’s toe-curling interview with “Newsnight” anchor Emily Maitlis.
Maitlis is played by Gillian Anderson in the film, while Andrew is played by “The Diplomat” star Rufus Sewell. Keeley Hawes is also on board as Amanda Thirsk, Andrew’s former private secretary and Billie Piper stars as Sam McAlister, the “Newsnight” producer who secured the interview with Andrew and on whose book (called “Scoops”) the film is based.
Andrew’s interview with Maitlis in November 2019 was dubbed a “car crash” after the British royal, who settled a sexual assault suit with Virginia Guiffre two years ago, said he had no regrets about his friendship with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Ashleigh Banfield is sticking with NewsNation.
On Wednesday, the Nexstar Media Group-owned cable news channel said it had successfully negotiated a multi-year extension of Banfield’s contract, which will keep her eponymous prime-time conversation program on NewsNation for a while longer.
Banfield was one of NewsNation’s first hires, back when the channel was still operating under its previous branding, WGN America. She took over a slot occupied by a nightly news program in prime-time, vowing to resurrect the conversation-style chat show made popular by Charlie Rose and Larry King (CNN).
“I’m an avid news junkie,” Banfield said in an interview with Variety. “Something that’s been missing for me as a consumer has been the center lane — I’m exhausted by the breathless fights in cable news, and I long for the days when I could just be informed of what was...

Award-winning dramatist Jez Butterworth has revealed that his new play is part-inspired by his encounters with disgraced mogul Harvey Weinstein.
The British playwright, who previously penned The Ferryman and Jerusalem as well as Sky Atlantic drama Britannia, told the BBC’s Front Row radio show that his experience with Weinstein – when the pair worked together on the 2001 Birthday Girl starring Nicole Kidman – has stayed with him and influenced his writing on The Hills of California.
Butterworth said: “My very early experiences in the film business were with Miramax, specifically Harvey Weinstein. It became very clear, very quickly that that was the rules of the game. I was meeting actresses in California who wanted to do my film but would not talk to me because they’d had encounters with him.”

The BBC is staring down the barrel of another real terms funding cut after the UK government signaled its intention to peg the license fee below inflation.
Culture secretary Lucy Frazer told BBC Radio 4’s Today show that the government would announce the new level of the license fee “very soon.”
Under a deal struck with the BBC in 2022, the broadcaster’s funding was frozen for two years, but ministers agreed it could rise with inflation from April 2024.
This would guarantee the BBC a funding increase of around 9%, pushing the annual household fee up £15 to £173.30 ($219.53) — the biggest single increase for nearly 40 years.
Asked if the government will halt the 9% increase, Frazer told Today: “I think that is a lot of money and that is one of the things that we are considering.”
The culture secretary said she disagreed with the suggestion that the government was ripping up the deal...

Newsnight, the BBC’s flagship daily current affairs show, is to be shortened to 30 minutes and relaunched as a forum for interviews and debate.
BBC News has today briefed staff about a £7.5M ($9.5M) savings plan, with BBC2’s Newsnight bearing the brunt of the cuts as the British broadcaster grapples with a funding freeze.
Reporter roles will be closed on the show, which has built a reputation for original investigative journalism during its 43 years on air. In total, more than half of Newsnight’s 60 jobs are expected to shut.
Sources said Newsnight, which currently runs for 40 minutes, was being “gutted.” The BBC argued that savings will be reinvested in a “BBC News Investigations Unit” that will serve all of the corporation’s news output.

Exclusive: Newsnight editor Stewart Maclean has unexpectedly quit as the BBC considers making dramatic cuts to its flagship current affairs show.
After less than two years leading Newsnight, Maclean has decided to become BBC World News Content’s Africa bureau chief, meaning he will relocate to Nairobi, Kenya.
Sources said the timing of Maclean’s departure has left colleagues “aghast” because it coincides with a period of uncertainty for Newsnight.
BBC News managers are looking to make up to £5M ($6M) of cuts to Newsnight, with talks ongoing over axing its team of correspondents and making the show more debate-led in its content.
Many think stripping Newsnight of its original reporting could sound the death knell for a show that has been an agenda-setting fixture on BBC2 since 1980.

Sure, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be a looming issue for the royal family as long as they’re at odds. However, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex aren’t reportedly as much of a “problem” as another British royal, Prince Andrew.

The Duke of York, 63, joined William and Kate on their way to Crathie Kirk on Aug. 27, 2023. The church is a short drive from Balmoral Castle, the late Queen Elizabeth II‘s Scottish residence frequented by royals every summer.
