‘The Dropout’: Dylan Minnette, Bashir Salahuddin & Alan Ruck Among Nine Added To Hulu Limited Series
Hulu’s upcoming limited series The Dropout, about the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos, continues to expand its cast with the addition of Dylan Minnette, Alan Ruck, Bashir Salahuddin and Mary Lynn Rajskub. Also joining the cast are Hart Bochner, James Hiroyuki Liao, Nicky Endres, Camryn Mi-Young Kim and Andrew Leeds. They will appear opposite Amanda Seyfried in the series from Liz Meriwether, Seachlight Television and Disney Television Studios’ 20th Television.
Created and executive produced by Meriwether, who also serves as showrunner, The Dropout is based on the ABC News/ABC Radio podcast. Holmes (Seyfried), the enigmatic Stanford dropout who founded medical testing start-up Theranos, was lauded as a Steve Jobs for the next tech generation. Once worth billions of dollars, the myth crumbled when it was revealed that none of the tech actually worked, putting thousands of people’s health in grave danger. Money. Romance. Tragedy.

This morning, 12-year-old German actress Helena Zengel earned her first Golden Globe nomination for her turn opposite Tom Hanks in Western, News of the World.
With this recognition for her American film debut, she becomes one of the youngest actors ever nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and finds herself in good company.
To put things in perspective, Zengel is younger, as she accepts her first nomination, than were a number of revered actors at this pivotal career moment, including Saoirse Ronan (first nominated for Atonement), Evan Rachel Wood (Thirteen), Natalie Portman (Anywhere But Here) and Jodie Foster (Freaky Friday).
Also receiving their first Golden Globe nominations at the age of 12 were Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense) and Kirsten Dunst (Interview with the Vampire).
For Zengel, the recognition feels “very, very good.”

As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association threw a curveball on Monday when it placed “Vox Lux” star Natalie Portman in the Best Film Drama Actress field for the Golden Globes instead of Neon’s requested supporting designation. Before the news, Portman was in eighth place in our Best Supporting Actress odds, with 10 people calling a win for her. The stacked lead field will be tougher for Portman to crack, but she’s already shot into the top 10 in our predictions.
Portman is currently in 10th place, with 100/1 odds, trailing Glenn Close (“The Wife”), Lady Gaga (“A Star Is Born”), Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”), Viola Davis (“Widows”), Yalitza Aparicio (“Roma”), Nicole Kidman (“Destroyer”), Julia Roberts (“Ben Is Back”), Saoirse Ronan (“Mary Queen of Scots”) and Toni Collette (“Hereditary”). The interview below contains Spoilers for the film “Vox Lux.”
The new movie “Vox Lux” from actor-turned-director Brady Corbett begins with a bang and yet something quite familiar in modern day America: a school shooting. The manner in which the opening segment of the film unfolds is still very startling and sets everything in motion for the main character of Celeste. She is a teenager (played by Raffey Cassidy) who survives the classroom murders, writes and performs a song about it for the memorial and becomes a worldwide pop star over the first hour of the movie. It then jumps forward many years to reveal a far more jaded, world-weary, belligerent version of Celeste (now played by Natalie Portman).
In our recent interview with Portman (watch the exclusive video above), she discusses “Vox Lux” and playing the grow-up Celeste following Cassidy’s performance. She says, “We really didn’t coordinate...

Every time he gets near a plane, he takes an even greater risk with his life. Considering this is also a man who has radiation poisoning, that’s saying something. But when a job needs to get done, Steve does it. This week it just happened to involve flying, and the resistance Five-0 comes up against with a federal agency. Steve has no problem throwing his weight around

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

Natalie Portman has some solid advice for college grads. The Oscar-winning actress gave the 2015 Harvard Commencement Speech at the Tercentenary Theater on Wednesday in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Portman, who graduated from the prestige university in 2003, managed to throw in a few jokes during her mostly-serious speech. The 33-year-old opened up the ceremony, referencing the WikiLeakes Sony hack e-mail scandal and her own time at college. "At my Class Day, we were lucky enough to have Will Ferrell as Class Day Speaker and that many of us, hungover or even freshly high, mainly wanted to laugh," Portamn confessed. "It's easy now to romanticize my time here, but I had some very difficult times here too," she revealed during her candid speech. "Some combination of being 19, dealing with my first heart break, taking birth control pills that have since been taken off the market for their depressive side effects, and spending too much...

Looks like Joey has beaten Dawson to the director's chair: Katie Holmes will make her directorial debut with All We Had, an adaptation of the Annie Weatherwax novel about a penniless mother and daughter's adventures in pre-crash America. (We haven't read it, but it sounds like Waitress meets Anywhere But Here.) The script will be written by Josh Boone, who directed The Fault in Our Stars. So: There will probably be plenty of crying. James Van Der Beek, meanwhile, is about to star in CSI: Cyber, coming to CBS this fall.

Anywhere But Here: Braff’s Kickstarter Baby a Painstaking Smog of Forced Emotion
It’s hard to believe a decade has passed since actor Zach Braff’s directorial debut, Garden State, was sold for a pleasant sum at the Sundance Film Festival and went on to reach a certain amount of acclaim, generating one of the first millennial iterations of the manic pixie dream girl with the prototype performance from Natalie Portman. The indie landscape has shifted a bit, and Braff’s return to the director’s seat with Wish I Was Here arrives like an interesting litmus test.
His debut hasn’t aged as well as we might have predicted due to the countless amount of similarly conceived films since then, though one must admit there’s a certain amount of nostalgic charm wrapped up in its well-meaning intentions. Comparatively, Braff’s unstudied earnestness to a fault irreparably...

Buffy scoffs that he wore tweed diapers (that's nappies to the Brits); Xander is reeling from the horror of mentioning Giles and orgies in the same sentence; even Giles' beau, Jenny calls him a fuddy duddy. Such a rock solid square clearly isn't capable of harbouring a dark past.
You would have thought so, anyway, but as it turns out, Giles is no stranger to the dark side. His shady history has happened to have caught up with him in a big way in the latest episode called The Dark Age. You know how some people just turn out to be unwanted acquaintances rather than friends?...

Aw, little Teeny is not so tiny anymore -- Thora Birch turns 31 years old today! The adorable actress who played the loveable pre-teen in "Now and Then" has had huge success since starring in the cult classic. The popular film followed four 12-year-old best friends during their very eventful summer filled with love, some mystery and heartbreak, set in a small suburban town in the 1970s. Since starring in the popular flick, which featured stars like Demi Moore, Melanie Griffith, Rosie O'Donnell and Rita Wilson playing the girls' older selves, Thora's gone on to land roles in box office hits like "American Beauty," "Anywhere But Here" and "Deadline." Sadly, Birch's co-star Ashleigh Aston Moore (who played Chrissy) reportedly passed away from pneumonia in 2007 and Walter Sparrow, who played Crazy Pete, also passed away in 2000.Find out what the rest of the star-studded cast has been up to by clicking "Launch Gallery" above!

With all this talk of new Star Wars episodes and the like, it reminded me of those heady days surrounding the release of the first of the prequels, and I decided to dig up something from the past.At a 1999-era Toronto International Film Festival press conference for Wayne Wang's (forgettable) Anywhere But Here, which starred Natalie Portman and Susan Sarandon, I slightly hijacked the proceedings for a few minutes, and had a nice back and forth with the leading two actors. I asked specifically about their interactions with rabid fans, and whether the star of the Rocky Horror Picture Show had any advice for the young star of the second Star Wars trilogy.A young, adorable Portman seemed slightly shy but quick with a laugh, while...

Susan Sarandon sort of does whatever she wants.
A quick tally: She's in an astounding number of films that are either premiering or wrapping this year ("Cloud Atlas," "Arbitrage," "That's My Boy," "The Company You Keep," "Robot & Frank," etc.). Then there's the ping pong, a passion which Sarandon's developed into not just three nightclub and training grounds (with a fourth on the way, as HuffPost Entertainment revealed) but a public-access program in New York's lower-income schools.
Topping it all off is the 65-year-old actress' doggedly liberal activism, which has long endeared her to liberals and made her an (unapologetic) enemy of the far right. So how does she manage it all?
"I figure out if I'm going to have fun," Sarandon said in a recent interview. "But I really don't want to repeat myself, I want to do new things and work with people who are passionate about what they...

Killer Mike made his debut on Outkast’s legendary Stankonia album back in 2000 before appearing on one of my favourite Outkasts track a year later ‘The Whole World’. Since then he has gone on to release five solo albums on the Grind Time Official label. To some he is an Atlanta legend appearing on tracks with Outkast, T.I., Bun B, Young Jeezy and other Dirty South legends. He has often presented a more eloquent view of rapping touching on such diverse subjects as politics, religion and the plight of the poorer members of our society.
Although I usually would not take more than a passing interest in most of Mike’s catalogue, apart from a few of the more interesting songs, I immediately became interested when I heard his latest album would be produced entirely by El-p. The reason why this made it an interesting project...

Dear Sos reader/listenership:
With Christmas approaching, and with Sound on Sight turning three years old (and yes, I know Iceage are pictured above holding four candles – deal with it), I thought it appropriate to create a “present” of sorts to thank everyone for their support, attention, and feedback. Earlier this year, partially thanks to my involvement with Sos (and the associated time commitments), I decided I had to step down from my volunteer position at Cjlo 1690Am here in Montreal, where I had been maintaining a weekly music show for several years – but that doesn’t mean I’ve stopped keeping tabs on what I consider to be the best music of the year. So, in order to keep one foot in the music world, I started keeping a longlist of my favorite new tracks, with the ultimate goal of making a kickass year-end mix for you all.
Which I’ve now done!

After the New York Times published Mona Simpson's moving eulogy to her brother, Steve Jobs, Apple fans grew curious about the woman who didn't meet her famous sibling until her 25th birthday.
Simpson is an acclaimed novelist, best known, perhaps, for her 1986 novel "Anywhere But Here," which was turned into a 1999 film starring Natalie Portman and Susan Sarandon. She is a professor at UCLA and Bard College, and her 2000 novel "Off Keck Road" was a Chicago Tribune Heartland Prize winner.
Simpson's parents were Abdulfattah "John" Jandali and Joanne Carole Schieble, though she later took her stepfather's last name when she became estranged from Jandali. Simpson was born in 1957, but two years earlier, her parents had put a child up for adoption: Steve Jobs, who was adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs.

Among those surrounding Steve Jobs before he passed away was his younger sister, Mona Simpson.
In an emotional eulogy at his memorial service, Simpson described her brother's final moments, saying he gazed at his wife and children and uttered three times, "Oh, wow."
Mona revealed, "Before embarking, he'd looked at his [other] sister Patty, then for a long time at his children, then at his life partner, Laurene, and then over their shoulders past them, before saying his final words.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs refused a potentially life-saving surgery after finding out he had pancreatic cancer, according to biographer Walter Isaacson. Jobs later admitted he regretted the decision.
Rather than having the surgical procedure, Jobs tried alternative therapies, explaining he didn't want to have the operation because it was too invasive. Jobs ended up having the surgery nine months later. Isaacson, who will appear on "60 Minutes" on Sunday, said Steve initially attempted to treat the disease with various treatments,...

One of the bits of trivia surrounding Apple co-founder Steve Jobs' death Wednesday (Oct. 5) is his connection to the novel "Anywhere But Here" by Mona Simpson. So what's the deal?
Simpson is Jobs' biological sister, though they didn't know each other until they were adults. His biological parents, Joanne Schieble and Abdulfattah Jandali, were unmarried when he was born in 1955 and gave him up for adoption. They married 10 months later and had Mona (who later took stepfather George Simpson's name) in 1957.
Jobs tracked down his biological mother and sister in the 1980s, and he and Simpson became close. She dedicated "Anywhere But Here," her first novel, to "Joanne, our mother, and my brother Steve."
"Anywhere But Here," published in 1987, (and adapted for a 1999 movie starring Susan Sarandon and Natalie Portman) is the story of Adele August, who leaves her second husband and takes her daughter Ann from Wisconsin...

Snow Flower and Lily are two girls growing up in China in the 1800s. They’re born on the same day — an auspicious sign — and have their feet bound on the same day. So Lily, who is a poor girl that has been “blessed” with beautiful(ly bound) feet, becomes laotong (legal bff) to Snow Flower, a girl from a wealthy family. No matter how far away they are from each other, their lives are forever bound, kinda like their feet. Oh, I’m not giving enough respect to the history of laotong and Chinese foot-binding? Neither does this film. With so many tales to tell, and so many ways to tell them, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan instead goes the long, boring, incomprehensible route, making me wish for the movie it could have been.

Breast cancer has claimed the life of producer Laura Ziskin, who died Sunday at 61 years. Ms. Ziskin was well liked in a tough business. Some of her many accomplishments included being the first woman to produce the Academy Awards telecast alone in 2002. And then again, in 2007, Ziskin produced the first .green. Oscar ceremony. Most importantly, after her breast cancer diagnosis in 2004, she worked to create the Stand Up to Cancer initiative that network television supported, along with the Entertainment Industry Foundation. Ms. Ziskin was named president of Fox 2000 Pictures back in 1994, releasing Courage Under Fire, One Fine Day, Inventing the Abbotts, Volcano, Soul Food, Never Been Kissed, Fight Club, Anywhere but Here, Anna and the...

[1] Film producer and studio executive Laura Ziskin died [2] Sunday, succumbing to a seven-year battle with breast cancer. As one of Hollywood's most notable producers, Ziskin was a driving force behind films as varied and notable as Pretty Woman, Hero, As Good as It Gets, and the Spider-Man films. In addition, she was a vocal advocate for cancer research, co-founding Stand Up to Cancer in 2008. Ziskin was 61. Ziskin's long career began upon her graduation from USC's School of Cinematic Arts in 1973, when she took a job working for producer Jon Peters. She moved on to become a producer in the '80s. One of her first notable credits was Murphy's Romance in 1984, for she and partner Sally Field created the production company Fogwood Films. The film won James Garner an Academy Award for Best Actor. In 1990, she produced one of the biggest films of her career -- Pretty Woman, still considered...

"Something Borrowed" does not go into its opening weekend with a whole lot of goodwill. Fans of the best-selling Emily Giffin novel have not been shy expressing their displeasure with the casting of stars Ginnifer Goodwin and Kate Hudson, and critics have largely panned the movie -- earning it a 35 out of 100 on review aggregate Metacritic and an even more dismal 15% on RottenTomatoes.com.
Film adaptations rarely live up to the books that inspire them, even under the best of circumstances, and few genres seem to highlight this more than the unfortunately named "chick lit."

For a series that is titled after one main character the start of this season is not showing her best qualities. No main character should be without their flaws but it seems this season particularly wants to expose Buffy’s biggest flaws. As mentioned in the pre word before I began the recaps we are already exploring the true outcome of Buffy’s decision in the final episode on television, is sharing that power really beneficial for anyone other than Buffy?

Imagine if you were the lucky one to succeed in pulling the sword from the stone. You'd be revered as a hero or heroine, your name would be toasted in pubs up and down the country, you'd be a living legend.

Yesterday I posted a picture of Jean Reno and Natalie Portman from The Professional, simply because I stumbled across the photo about a week or two ago and felt it fit a slight lull in content. Then a few people began ranking and discussing Portman's other films, which got me to thinking about what my favorite Portman films were and how I would rank them.
For the sake of this argument, Portman's film career started very early so this also means there were a few notable films she was in that I don't necessarily consider "Natalie Portman films". If I had considered them both, Heat and Mars Attacks! would have made this list, but her contribution to both isn't enough to warrant placement, though I tried hard to make a case for Heat.
Also, before we get to the six I chose as my favorite Portman films, I should say...

Scream 4
Opens: April 15th 2011
Cast: Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Mary McDonnell, Emma Roberts Director: Wes Craven
Summary: Sidney Prescott, now the author of a self-help book, returns home to Woodsboro on the last stop of her book tour. There she reconnects with family and friends, but it also brings about the return of Ghostface which puts the whole town in danger.
Analysis: Back in late 1996 when I first began covering film news, "Scream" was released and became more than just a sleeper hit. After years of genre movies being relegated to direct-to-video status, this comedic slasher spawned the biggest surge in the horror film genre since "Halloween" almost two decades before. Its post-modern stylings and witty self-aware dialogue went on to be a big influence on films and television in general.
Yet the "Scream" series itself never could quite capture that glory again. By the time the...

Producers are considering shooting the film in Germany and various locations around Europe. The search for the lead actor to play Albert Einstein will commence in the coming weeks. The film, tentatively titled Einstein, tells the true inspirational story of the trials, tragedies and vindication of the single-most celebrated scientist of the 20th century. Directed by: Ivan Reitman
Cast: Ashton Kutcher, Natalie Portman, Kevin Kline, Ludacris, Greta Gerwig
Running Time: 1 hr 50 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: January 21, 2011
Plot: A young man (Kutcher) and woman (Portman) struggle to keep their relationship strictly sexual with no romantic complications. Supposedly, hilarity ensues.
Who’S It For? I wanna say romantic comedy fans, but this isn’t even for all rom-com lovers. This wreaks of the male-oriented romantic comedy, which features a few shots of T & A to satiate the appetites of the over-sexed and the women that they wish existed.
Expectations: Ashton Kutcher’s involved? Yeah, my expectations were not high. Natalie Portman is almost insufferably cute so I thought I’d be able to tough it out for her. Nick Allen suggested the Academy may strip Portman of her Oscar for Black Swan after this one, and I’m not sure he’s too far off.

The Golden Globes are right around the corner which means awards season will be in full swing over the weeks to come.
