10 Best movies to watch on Memorial Day 2024 ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
Memorial Day is meant to honour the valiant deeds of the departed troops who gave us the freedom we enjoy today. Apart from engaging in suitable Memorial Day celebrations, viewing movies with military or combat themes might serve as a solemn reminder of the real significance of the occasion.
There are many movies that convey the story of the sacrifices made by members of the military and their families, even though there aren’t many specifically dedicated to Memorial Day. A handful of them touch on other topics, like romance, friendship, and, of course, American life, but the majority are dramas or biopics.

‘If you see one movie this summer, see Star Wars. If you see a second, see Austin Powers.’ Thus spake trailer-man, in the teaser for Mike Myers’s upcoming comedy sequel, and to a great extent, that’s exactly what happened in the summer of 1999. Well, almost.
The 20th century was running out of time and that summer was impatiently filled with as many tantalising prospects as any big movie season in recent memory. It appeared to be the summer of comebacks. Following Terrence Malick’s long-awaited return to directing in the recently-released The Thin Red Line, Summer ’99 would see not only George Lucas but Stanley Kubrick making their much-delayed encores – though we knew by then that this was actually Kubrick’s swan song.
An exercise in peak-nostalgia seemed inevitable, but the season proved to be full of surprises. None more so than the success of that second Austin Powers film,...

A war can only go on for so long before its causes start to fray at the seams and the people who enlisted to fight on their behalf are forced to reckon with the basic fact of what they’re actually doing out there. Few movies this side of “The Thin Red Line” have been more attuned to that awful but clarifying process of self-recognition than Roberto Minervini’s “The Damned,” a thinly sketched piece of Civil War reenactment about a volunteer unit dispatched to patrol the uncharted borderlands along the western territories during the winter of 1862.

While Martin Scorsese aims to kick off production on his Jesus film this year, Terrence Malick is going on year five of editing his, marking one of the only films to wrap production pre-pandemic that still has yet to be released. As so happens every year before the Cannes Film Festival announces its lineup, rumors have swirled that the director’s Biblical epic The Way of the Wind (formerly known as The Last Planet) may see a premiere in 2024. We will, unfortunately, have to wait another year, but in the meantime we have exclusive new details on the highly anticipated project.

The original Star Wars trilogy was one of the shining examples of groundbreaking films of the 70s and 80s that changed cinema forever. The film series introduced audiences to a galaxy far, far away, and featured visuals and sci-fi narratives that have never been done before up to that point. The franchise also saw the origins of characters that have now become iconic characters.

Dianne Crittenden, casting director on the original Star Wars who also worked on Pretty Woman, Spider-Man 2 and dozens of other films during a 40-year career, died March 19 at her home in Pacific Palisades. She was 82.
Her friend and colleague Ilene Starger confirmed her passing to Deadline.
Born on August 6, 1941, in the Jamaica neighborhood of Queens, NY, Crittenden got her start in the entertainment industry working with Howard Zieff, a photographer and director. They worked on advertising campaigns, TV commercials and films.
Her first project as casting director was Terrence Malick’s 1973 drama Badlands, starring Martin Sheen-Sissy Spacek, on which Bruce Springsteen based his song “Nebraska” a decade later. Who could've imagined "Community" launching the careers of so many big-name artists? From the Russo Brothers to Donald Glover and Alison Brie, Dan Harmon's cult-favorite comedy series was a breeding ground for then-budding talents, perhaps none more so than composer Ludwig Göransson. Over the last 15 years, Göransson has cemented himself as one of the best music-making millennials in the business, along the way picking up an Oscar for the sick Afrofuturistic beats of his "Black Panther" soundtrack (although his Oscar-nominated score for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" was just as impressive). He's now landed a well-deserved second Academy Award for his electrifying work on "Oppenheimer," placing him in some reputable company when it comes to the Oscars.
Specifically, this gives Göransson just as many Oscars as Hans Zimmer. It's actually kind of mind-boggling that the legendary composer doesn't have more than that, considering just how many iconic movie scores he's...

Serving the entertainment industry for more than two decades is a big deal, and Christopher Nolan has been doing it flawlessly. But there are several filmmakers, who played a major role in Nolan’s success. One such inspiration is Terrence Malick, who has unknowingly influenced Nolan’s works to such an extent, that today the Tenet director has turned into one of the most celebrated filmmakers.

2024 Oscars Best Production Design overview: Can any of the other 3 nominees surpass ‘Barbenheimer’?
A critically important craft to filmmaking is production design. The production designer is responsible for the look of a film, which includes finding locations, designing and building sets, and running the art department. Although the name of this category has changed over the past nine-and-a-half decades, the general principle is the same, with this Oscar going both to a film’s production designer(s) and its set decorator(s).
This category doesn’t usually match the ultimate Best Picture winner; the last time that happened was in 2017 with Guillermo del Toro‘s “The Shape of Water,” and before that was Peter Jackson‘s “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” in 2003. One of this year’s nominees didn’t even receive a Best Picture nomination.

The director’s rereleased 1978 film revealed some of the authorial signatures that would underscore a film-making career punctuated by a two-decade disappearance
Terrence Malick’s richly achieved early film from 1978 is now rereleased; it is a tragic romance and slo-mo melodrama which appeared five years after his debut, and after which Malick mysteriously vanished from public view until The Thin Red Line came out fully 21 years later to banish his Salingerian reclusive reputation. One of the most acclaimed movies of 1998 is “Pleasantville,” starring Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon, Jeff Daniels, William H. Macy and Joan Allen. Written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross, the film is a creative fantasy drama about two 1990s teen siblings who are transported to a 1950s family sitcom and then slowly begin to transform the dull, colorless world into someplace better. Released 25 years ago in October 1998, “Pleasantville” only grossed about $50 million worldwide on a $60 million budget. But it did end up receiving three Oscar nominations. Read on for Gold Derby’s tribute to the “Pleasantville” 25th anniversary.
Most of the nation’s critics gave enthusiastic notices to “Pleasantville,” including Roger Ebert in the Chicago Sun-Times, who picked it as the second-best film of 1998 and wrote that it “is the kind of parable that encourages us to re-evaluate the good old days and take a fresh look at...

One of the most reclusive filmmakers of all time—at least where the press and publicity is concerned, he hasn’t done an interview since the 1970s and hasn’t posed for an official photograph since before then— Terrence Malick marches to the beat of his own eccentric drum. Literally, the filmmaker works on his own timetable and pretty much does whatever he wants, including taking a 20-year hiatus from filmmaking between 1978’s “Day of Heaven” (which is re-joining the Criterion Collection in a new edition announced today) and 1998’s “The Thin Red Line.

Two-time Oscar winner Sean Penn has excelled in a number of fields, including acting, writing and directing. But it’s his career as a performer that has brought him the most acclaim. Let’s take a look back at 15 of his greatest films as an actor, ranked worst to best.
Penn entered the Oscar race for the first time with his performance as a death row inmate in Tim Robbins’s “Dead Man Walking” (1995), for which he competed in Best Actor. Subsequent lead nominations as a jazz guitarist in Woody Allen’s “Sweet and Lowdown” (1999) and a mentally handicapped father in “I Am Sam” (2001) quickly followed.
He hit the Oscar jackpot with Clint Eastwood’s “Mystic River” (2003), which cast him as a criminal grieving the murder of his daughter. Just five years later, he returned to the winner’s circle with his lead role in “Milk” (2008), Gus Van Sant’s...

Cross of Iron might not be as well-known or well-reviewed as some of the most popular World War II films. If you Google this subgenre you will soon see the likes of The Dirty Dozen, The Great Escape, The Thin Red Line, Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan. But whilst Cross of Iron might not be on the list, it’s worthy of every film fan’s attention and the new 4K release is a perfect way to do that.
Set on the Eastern Front in World War II during the Soviet’s Caucasus operations against the German Kuban bridgehead in late 1943. But interestingly, the story focuses on the class conflict in the German army and it is all the more interesting for it. It’s...

Jim Caviezel‘s acting career has spanned over three decades, and he’s worked with such filmmaking giants as Ang Lee, Tony Scott and Terrence Malick. A devout Catholic, Caviezel was profoundly moved during production of the 2004 hit “The Passion of the Christ” in which he portrayed Jesus and began changing his career focus to making inspirational films that more directly appeal to audiences of faith, such as “When the Game Stands Tall” and “Paul, Apostle of Christ.”
In his 2023 movie “Sound of Freedom,” Caviezel plays the real-life Tom Ballard, a Dhs special agent who goes rogue to rescue a young girl who has been kidnapped by a Colombia sex-trade ring. The film has been celebrated by politically conservative audiences, while critics were more mixed. Despite the controversy surrounding the film, “Sound of Freedom” became the unexpected box office hit of 2023, crossing the coveted $100 million mark in only 16 days.

The Wes Anderson aesthetic, tone, and style are unmistakable. When this particular writer commented that you can recognize an Anderson film “within 10 seconds,” the subject of this interview interjected, “even less!” — and he’s not wrong. But there’s also the inherent charm of his often recurring cast of stars. Now appearing in his fifth Anderson feature, no one is a bigger fan of Anderson’s work and process than Oscar winner Adrien Brody.
So once you hear that Brody, who talks with obvious joy and understanding about everything from Anderson’s ability to cast incredible young talent and the way he uses animatics to plot his films, is playing a director in “Asteroid City” — a theatrical director, but a director nonetheless — the question seems obvious: is he playing Anderson?
No. Not really. Ok, maybe a little, but certainly not more than his primary inspiration: Elia Kazan.

Though he shares the name of a physicist famous for his thought experiment involving a cat, you could be forgiven for almost forgetting Schrödinger. Now that Mandy Walker (“Elvis”) has upset Claudio Miranda (“Top Gun: Maverick”) at the 37th American Society of Cinematographers Awards, all eyes are on next week’s Oscar ceremony, where she is well-positioned to take out another frontrunner, James Friend (“All Quiet on the Western Front”), and become the first female Dp to win the Academy Award for Best Cinematography.
The academy and ASC have awarded the same film only 17 times (47%), but eight of those have occurred between 2011 and 2022, giving the organizations a 66% correlation over the past 12 years. Put in perspective, that means the years since 2010 have posted practically the same amount of identical winners as the 24 preceding (nine).

If you read our Gold Derby combined odds for Oscar Best Picture, you see that the race is over and “Everything Everywhere All at Once” is about to be crowned at the Academy Awards on March 12. But the favorite doesn’t always win the horserace. Upsets happen. The longshot comes in. Jaws drop. Calculations go awry. Something that no one could see coming winds up coming in. Chaos reigns.
And we love it.
If there is anything we’ve learned, it’s that there are no guarantees. Films that the majority think should have won, don’t. That’s particularly true in hindsight. “Citizen Kane,” widely regarded as the finest film of the 20th century, lost. So did the film many consider to be Martin Scorsese’s best, “Raging Bull.” “Moonlight” beat “La La Land.” “Crash” upset “Brokeback Mountain.” “Shakespeare in Love” upended “Saving Private Ryan.” “Chariots of Fire” snared the trophy over “Reds.

The producers of “Rust” have named a new cinematographer to take over for Halyna Hutchins, who was shot and killed on set in October 2021.
The production also announced that a documentary will be made about the completion of the film and about Hutchins’ life and work. The documentary will have the “full support” of the production and of Hutchins’ widower, Matthew.
“Rust” was originally set to resume filming in January, but is now slated to restart sometime this spring. Bianca Cline, who worked on “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On,” will take over as cinematographer.
The production also announced that Grant Hill, an industry veteran whose producing credits include the “Matrix” films and “The Thin Red Line,” will be joining as a producer.
Alec Baldwin is still on board in the title role, despite being charged last month with involuntary manslaughter for Hutchins’ death. Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the film’s armorer,...

An admission: I’m not a giant fan of war movies. I loved “Platoon,” “Full Metal Jacket,” “Apocalypse Now,” “The Thin Red Line,” “Schindler’s List” and “Saving Private Ryan,” to name a half-dozen. But too often, I’ve found the violence gratuitous, the point about the pointlessness of war driven home too hard and transparently. But my fellow editors at Gold Derby have been insisting for weeks that the German remake of “All Quiet on the Western Front” on Netflix was a harrowing masterpiece that needed to be taken more seriously in the Oscar race – and not just for Best International Feature but picture, director (Edward Berger), adapted screenplay, cinematography and a slew of crafts categories, too. I finally caved and watched it over the weekend, and I’m happy to report they were right.
I was late to the party, but I’m all in now. “All Quiet” is...
