Producers promised a budget of 25 million dollars, whereas they made the film for 3.5 million dollars, according to star Christopher Lambert.
Christopher Lambert declined to reprise his role as Raiden in Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997) to star as Beowulf.
A short scene of Grendel having sexual contact with Rhona Mitra's character Kyra in her room was shot but left out because it didn't really work and the director later felt that it also wouldn't match with the story. Scene was very similar like the scenes where Grendel's mother comes to Hrothgar while he sleeps and has sex with him, but in the deleted scene Grendel rapes Kyra, who is also his half-sister, without her knowing what happened even after waking up naked in her bed. In her next movie Hollow Man (2000), Rhona Mitra also had a scene where she was nude and where her character gets raped, but just like what happened with one in Beowulf, that scene was cut (although director's cut with uncut nude/rape scene was released later).
Christopher Lambert passed on the opportunity to return as Raiden for Mortal Kombat: Annihilation (1997) to star in this film. James Remar replaced Christopher Lambert in the role.
Filmed on location in Romania.
