A series premiere, a long-awaited season return and a bevy of great movies are new on HBO and HBO Max this month. May 1 marks the series debut of “White House Plumbers,” the new limited series from “Veep” showrunner David Mandel that chronicles the Watergate break-in and fallout. That show airs on HBO and will stream on HBO Max. Then on May 4, the comedy “The Other Two” returns for its third season on HBO Max.
The sixth season of the animated series “Rick and Morty” will be available to stream on HBO Max starting on May 11, and in terms of library titles the “Men in Black” trilogy, the comedies “Step Brothers” and “Some Like It Hot” and Jonah Hill’s directorial debut “Mid90s” all come to HBO and HBO Max this month.

Wait a minute, you might be asking, isn’t HBO Max supposed to be “Max” now? How then, am I seeing a list of HBO Max new releases for May 2023? Well spotted, dear reader. Warner Bros. Discovery did indeed recently reveal that it would be rebranding its combined HBO Max and Discovery+ streaming service as just Max. As the company notes in its press release for May though, that change doesn’t take effect until May 23. What follows is a list of everything coming to HBO Max through May 22.
The biggest releases this month are two TV series that arrive at the beginning of May. White House Plumbers is a comedic take on the infamous Watergate scandal starring Woody Harrelson and Justin Theroux. That will be followed by season 3 of The Other Two, which I personally consider the funniest show on television. Catch up now before it’s too late!

HBO Max will officially be replaced by Warner Bros. Discovery on May 23 with a new and improved service called Max. However, that doesn’t mean the service is scrimping on content until then. One of the biggest new releases of the month is the new limited series “White House Plumbers,” which will premiere on May 1. Starring Woody Harrelson as E. Howard Hunt and Justin Theroux as G. Gordon Liddy, the pair portray two real-life Watergate burglars and Nixon saboteurs who ended up destroying the very president they desperately wanted to serve.
Check out the “White House Plumbers” trailer:
The platform will head to the pitch on May 16 with a three-part soccer docuseries “Angel City.” The series goes behind the scenes with the groundbreaking Los Angeles-based professional women’s soccer team, Angel City Football Club. [Editor’s note: The following article contains some spoilers for “The Humans.”]
Icebreakers don’t work with Richard Jenkins, at least not in the way one might expect. They don’t need to: He’s always present and ready. Still, they don’t hurt, and when the lauded character actor and two-time Oscar nominee popped into a recent Zoom with IndieWire, attempts were made to allay light dismay over technical difficulties — this interviewer was not, unfortunately, popping into frame as quickly as Jenkins — with a question about a wholly unexpected topic: His turn as an assassin in Clint Eastwood’s 1997 drama “Absolute Power.”
While we were meant to be talking about Stephen Karam’s skin-crawling family drama “The Humans,” having just recently watched “Absolute Power” and been — as ever — blown away by Jenkins’ uncanny ability to slip into any and all roles, I simply wanted to mention the project and how thrilling he is in even a small part.

Time and time again during this year’s pandemic, movie studios have had to make the best of a bad situation. HBO Max’s list of new releases for December 2020 comes along with the most extreme example yet.
WarnerMedia undoubtedly had big plans for Wonder Woman 1984 when it scheduled it for a holiday release last year. After moving it to the summer, however, the conglomerate had to delay its theatrical release time and time again. Now HBO Max is the lucky winner of the saga, as it gets to premiere the long-awaited sequel on its servers on Dec. 25.
While Wonder Woman 1984 is definitely the headline this month, there are some other intriguing streaming options for HBO Max in December. The month plays host to a whole host of high-powered documentaries like Heaven’s Gate: The Cult of Cults (Dec. 3), Alabama Snake (Dec. 9), and the Tiger Woods documentary Tiger (Dec.

As one of the weirder “back to school” seasons in living memory rolls out, Hulu is heading back to school in its own way for September 2020.
The biggest Hulu original arriving to the streaming services stream this month is season 2 of coming-of-age comedy Pen15…which of course stars two adults who have already come of age playing their middle school selves.
Speaking of middle school, perhaps the biggest non-original addition to the Hulu library this month is the arrival of all The Twilight Saga movies on September 1. That should prove to be a real nostalgia trip for interested parties. Other library titles of note include Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle, The Terminator, and 2019’s Judy on September 25.
Bookending Hulu’s originals this month is another intriguing comedy, Woke. This series will star Lamorne Morris as a Black cartoonist who gets an unexpected wakeup call.

HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!
HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.
If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.
Below you can find the full list of every movie and TV series coming to HBO Now, Go and Max next month, broken down by day of release. It includes an enormous amount of DC animated movies, mostly featuring Batman, the Justice League and Green Lantern. All of the Christopher Reeve Superman films will be up on HBO Max as of July,...

Lennie Niehaus, who went from Stan Kenton sideman to Clint Eastwood’s movie composer during a nearly 60-year career in music, died Thursday at his daughter’s home in Redlands, Calif. He was 90.
Niehaus’s two dozen films for Eastwood include original scores for the best picture-winning Western “Unforgiven,” the Charlie Parker biopic “Bird” and the popular romantic drama “The Bridges of Madison County.”
The two met in 1953 at California’s Fort Ord, when the two were in the Army during the Korean Conflict. “I used to play jazz jobs at one of the beer clubs on the base, and Clint was tending bar,” Niehaus wrote in an essay about the actor-director for his 1996 American Film Institute Life Achievement Award. “I used to go off post and play in a little jazz club in nearby Santa Cruz on Sunday afternoons, and he would be there.”

Dyanne Thorne, star of the groundbreaking exploitation classic Ilsa, She-wolf Of The SS, (1975) has died. According to the IMDb, she was 77, though she may have been several years older. My first encounter with Ms Thorne (and the twins) occurred in 1977 when I was 15 and my bother and cousins and I traveled to Piggot, Arkansas from our grandparents home in Malden, Missouri to see Rolling Thunder. The theater (I wish I could remember the name of it) had a special ‘Adults Only’ show at 11pm. When Rolling Thunder ended about 10:45, we ducked down behind our seats so the usher wouldn’t see us, then popped back up at 11 to see what we were sure was going to be some glorious fun sex film. The ‘Adults Only’ movie turned out to be Ilsa, She-wolf Of The SS. My life was never the same. To this day, Rolling Thunder and Ilsa, She-wolf...

Welcome to this week’s Nxt: UK, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have the British version of Triple H’s Play-House on hand. Let’s see if it all came together as something fun or something funky.
Match #1: Jinny & Jazzy Gabert def. Xia Brookside & Isla Dawn The following is courtesy of wwe.com:
In Nxt UK’s opening tag team matchup, Xia Brookside & Isla Dawn came together to face common enemies: Jinny and her intimidating new cohort, Jazzy Gabert. After Jazzy completely dismantled Xia & Isla, executing The White Witch with a devastating Dominator, The Fashionista demanded to be tagged in so that she could pick up the three-count for her tandem.
My Opinion: 2 out of 5 – This thing went by too quickly to become what it should have/could have been, but it did get them all on TV for a few minutes, so there you go.

Gregg Rudloff, a three-time Oscar-winning sound mixer and seven-time nominee whose career spanned more than 35 years, has died in Los Angeles. He was 63. The Los Angeles County Coroner’s office is treating his death as a possible suicide.
“It was reported to us possibly as a suicide,” a spokeswoman for the coroner’s office told Deadline. “His body was found at his residence in Sherman Oaks on January 6. A call was made, and during the call it was reported as a possible suicide. We won’t know for sure until the autopsy is completed.”

The most famous non-fiction line coined by the recently departed screenwriting genius William Goldman is undoubtedly “Nobody knows anything,” a great dig at the expense of Hollywood tastemakers. That statement, coined in one of Goldman’s terrific behind-the-scenes screenwriting memoirs, Adventures In The Screen Trade (1983), was designed to reflect the fact that, essentially, churning out cinematic hits amounted to educated guesswork from everyone involved. When applied to William Goldman’s expert writing — captured across 24 produced screenplays (along with several official consultant jobs and probably dozens of unofficial script doctoring gigs), 16 novels, seven memoirs, an abundance of non-fiction magazine articles, a handful of theatrical plays and teleplays, and a children’s...

Which actors are the most "Presidential"? To find out, we assembled this exclusive list of actors who have portrayed the President of the United States more than once.
Getting the opportunity to portray a Us President in film is rare. It can be a dignified role, and many times the actor has to be able to exhibit certain qualities we would traditionally associate with the Us head of state. Us Presidents are also depicted in film in a variety of ways. Some of them are the main characters for their respective films, where others are simply bit parts designed to represent the figurehead. Other roles may be satires, caricatures, or played for comedic effect. Regardless of the purpose or the depth of the role, there have been a limited number of Us President roles in the last century+ of motion picture projection.
Of course, some actors are more Presidential than others.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What filmmaker would you most like to see try their hand at a horror movie?
Kristy Puchko (@KristyPuchko), Pajiba/Riot Material
I struggled with this question, because a lot of the directors I have adored have worked in horror, be it Tim Burton (“Beetlejuice,” “Edward Scissorhands”), Robert Zemeckis (“Death Becomes Her”), Edgar Wright (“Shawn of the Dead”), Frank Oz (“Little Shop of Horror”), Guillermo del Toro (“Crimson Peak”), Bong-Joon Ho (“The Host”), Jim Jarmusch (“Only Lovers Left Alive”), or Taika Waititi (“What We Do In the Shadows”). The toughest ticket at this year’s Cannes Film Festival? A masterclass with Clint Eastwood, which unfolded on Sunday afternoon to a packed auditorium and a crowd that warmly received the veteran actor and director with a three-minute standing ovation.
While the two-hour chat, led by Los Angeles Times film critic Kenneth Turan, surveyed the full scope of Eastwood’s career with a particular eye on his directorial efforts, Eastwood admitted the he missed acting in front of the camera and promised to return to it.

Eastwood’s last major on-screen performance was in 2012’s “The Trouble With the Curve” (which, quite notably, came after a four-year acting hiatus). Per Variety’s report, he told Turan that he missed acting “once in a while but not often,” and added that he will return when he is ready.

As is tradition, the Cannes Film Festival has unveiled its official schedule just days before the creme de la creme of festivals kicks off next week. Buried in an impressively stacked lineup are two brand new and delightfully unexpected additions: masterclasses with Clint Eastwood and Alfonso Cuarón, both listed as part of their Cannes Classics slate.
Eastwood’s class is slated for two hours on Sunday, May 21. The previous day, Cannes will screen Eastwood’s 1992 Western classic, “Unforgiven.” Eastwood is a long-time Cannes regular, screening films such as “Changeling,” “Pale Rider,” “Bird,” “Absolute Power,” and “Mystic River” at the festival over the years.
In 1994, he served as President of the Official Selection jury, which ultimately picked Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction” as their Palme d’Or winner.

The Clint Eastwood political potboiler is a fascinatingly terrible film built from hair-brained anti-Clinton conspiracy theories, but what role does it play today?
Returning to Clint Eastwood’s Absolute Power on the 20th anniversary of its release, on Valentine’s Day 1997, I was hoping that its story of a womanizing president of the United States trying to cover up the murder of his own mistress by Secret Service agents might find some echo in reality now that we have an unabashedly bad guy in the Oval Office for real.
What I found was a politically resonant cultural document of its own times that does, in certain fascinating ways, lead us to the place we are now, even though a mere sex-murder does pale in comparison with the worst we might imagine Donald Trump coming up with.

Directors’ trademarks is a series of articles that examines the “signatures” that filmmakers leave behind in their work. This month, we’re examining the trademark style and calling signs of Clint Eastwood as director.
Clint Eastwood became an american film star in the 1960’s thanks to his acting performances in a number of western films. As he began to branch out with new roles in front of the camera, he sought out to have more creative input into the types of film projects that he would be involved in. One way he was able to accomplish this was by creating his own production company which eventually allowed him to work behind the camera as director. His first film as director was 1971’s Play Misty For Me, which was well received by critics and did well at the box office. HIs second film as director was High Plains Drifter (1973), in which he also starred.

Adela Quested (Judy Davis) finishes A Passage to India in the same manner she started the movie: her face is deformed by a window full of drops of rain. In both cases, she is looking at something more or less out of frame, blurred or uncertain, imaginary or physical. The placement of the camera, in the beginning and in the end, is at a different location. When the film starts, we are inside of a traveling agency and Adela is walking past the panoramic window. She stops for a second and stares at a large-sized model of a ship. We can’t see the ship entirely: just some chimneys, masts and ropes. We only know this is a ship because the previous shot—the first shot of the picture, actually—showed us this model. In the end of the movie, Adela is reading a letter concerning events that we have seen.

Laura Linney is set to join Tom Hanks in Clint Eastwood's movie about Captain Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger.
It will be her third team up with director Eastwood, following previous turns in Mystic River and Absolute Power.
According to Deadline, she will star as the wife of Hanks's Captain Sully, who famously landed Us Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River in 2009, after the jet engines failed from multiple bird strikes.
The emergency landing became known as the 'Miracle on the Hudson', as none of the 155 passengers or crew were fatally injured.
Sully will be based on the book Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters, by Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow.
Aaron Eckhart will also star in the drama as the co-pilot who helped Sullenberger as he negotiated the treacherous landing.

While there are many, many different movies that include the President of the United States and his Secret Service, there are few that focus on the Secret Service themselves. Why? We’re not sure because it seems like being one of the toughest jobs there is, there are infinite plot possibilities that could be utilized with the President’s right-hand men & women. They are, after all, guarding one of the most important (or at least powerful) people in the world.

New York (AP) -- In 1985, a year after the Cold War thriller "The Hunt for Red October" came out, author Tom Clancy was invited to lunch at the Reagan White House, where he was questioned by Navy Secretary John Lehman.
Who, the secretary wanted to know, gave Clancy access to all that secret material?
Clancy, the best-selling novelist who died Tuesday in Baltimore at 66, insisted then, and after, that his information was strictly unclassified: books, interviews and papers that were easily obtained. Also, two submarine officers reviewed the final manuscript.
Government officials may have worried how Clancy knew that a Russian submarine spent only about 15 percent of its time at sea or how many SS-n-20 Seahawk missiles it carried.

Clearly, TNT loves Jon Tenney.
And the feeling is mutual, since the actor has worked for the cable network for the better part of the past decade. After his long run as FBI Special Agent Fritz Howard -- longtime friend and eventual husband of Kyra Sedgwick's Brenda Leigh Johnson on "The Closer," a role he's occasionally reprised on the spinoff "Major Crimes" -- Tenney launches a new TNT crime drama as "King & Maxwell" premieres Monday (June 10).
He and Rebecca Romijn play Sean King and Michelle Maxwell, former Secret Service agents now partnered as private detectives. The characters originated in best sellers by David Baldacci ("Absolute Power"), and they're odd-couple opposites: He's more refined while she's the street-wise one.
Michael O'Keefe ("Caddyshack") and Chris Butler co-star as FBI operatives in the show that includes Shane Brennan ("NCIS," "NCIS: Los Angeles") among its executive producers.

Some acting careers are made by a single role. Think Brando’s Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), Robert DeNiro’s Johnny Boy in Mean Streets (1973), Leonardo DiCaprio’s Jack in the box office behemoth Titanic (1997).
A similar connection can happen on a more personal basis. You watch a movie and an actor — for whatever magical, alchemical reason – clicks with you. You suddenly remember the other times you’ve seen him or her, you want to know more about what they’ve done, what they’re going to do. From that moment, their name in the credits means something to you.
And in that great, romantic way Hollywood dream-making works, they may not even be stars; never were, never will be. But they are somebody you respond to, somebody’s who work touches you.
For me, Charles Durning was one of those actors. At the news of his passing on Christmas Eve,...

In a perfect video to watch on Election Day — or really any day for that matter — video mixologists Wreck & Salvage have put together an astounding compendium of clips of U.S. presidents from sci-fi flicks, comedies, drama, action movies and more. If you have trouble matching each Potus with each movie, below is a handy guide provided by W&S of the 51 films they’ve cribbed from.
The clips, of course, aren’t strung together willy-nilly. There’s a definite arc, flow and rhythm that provide a quasi narrative. Most movie presidents are there to deliver the “oh shit” news to the country — aliens are going to kill us all, an asteroid is going to kill us all, the economy’s in the toilet, all plant life is dying, etc. You know the “oh shit” news is coming when you hear the clichéd refrain, “Good evening, my fellow Americans.” (Actually,...

Spielberg's Lincoln biopic and Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty may have been held back until after the votes are counted, but do Us voters ever allow themselves to be swayed by what they see at the cinema?
Two movies scheduled for release in the Us on 26 December – a traditional slot for hot Oscar contenders – may make poignant viewing for the political classes. They are Kathryn Bigelow's Zero Dark Thirty, a dramatisation of the mission that killed Osama Bin Laden, and Steven Spielberg's Lincoln, a biopic of the 16th president.
If, during that holiday season, Barack Obama is preparing to begin his second term, the films will make pleasant chat at inauguration parties and help to burnish his legend. The Obama administration co-operated with Bigelow in the making of her film – there are allegations that the Pentagon released classified material to the director – while Spielberg, an Obama supporter,...

DC Comics has announced 'Rise of the Third Army' for October. Green Lantern's previously teased crossover will run through the line's four titles, starting in their 13th issues. "Absolute power corrupts absolutely - and the Guardians' time is finally here," writer Geoff Johns told The Source. "The Lantern titles spent the first year of DC Comics' The New 52 re-establishing themselves, but it all comes back together with year two starting with Green Lantern #0 and leading into October's #13's - which share an amazing cover by Ivan Reis. On May 14 the Mumbai papers reported that police commissioner Arup Patnaik had ordered the dissolution of six special squads created to combat crime in Mumbai. Reasons for the termination of the squads were said to be connected to the squads' moral conduct becoming questionable to the point of suggesting a nexus between the law enforcers and law breakers.
Uncannily Ram Gopal Varma's new film Department has exactly the same situation where a special police squad comprising Sanjay Dutt, Rana Daggubati, Deepak Tijori and others which is formed to crackdown on crime, is accused of crime activities and thereafter dismantled.
Ramu says he was shocked to read about Arup Patnaik's dismantled squads. "The situation completely echoes my film. I wrote my script a year back. The thing is when law enforcers are given unlimited power, there is bound to be corruption. There is an old political saying, 'Absolute power corrupts absolutely'.

Sporting one of the most fantastic scores ever laid down by a synthesizer, Christine is the focus of this installment of the John Carpenter Retrospective series. Jeff Konopka and Jesse Bartel discuss the finer points of automotive maintenance, mileage and murder! Spend the next 45 minutes to an hour with team Carpenter.
I think there are a number of lessons to be learned by watching Christine. Nerdy kids with cars are more dangerous than nerdy kids without cars. Nerdy kids with cars get girls. Nerdy kids without cars live longer. Nerdy kids with cars disobey their parents. Nerdy kids with cars drink and drive and don’t pay attention to the 10 and 2 rule. Um… nerdy kids with cars go on to direct episodes of Dexter and also star with Rodney Dangerfield in films featuring Oingo Boingo. Absolute power corrupts absolutey. Absolute vodka tastes good with Oj and Cranberry juice.

.Even the historians don.t know for sure.. It intrigued me that the film is called J. Edgar and really only uses half of Hoover.s name. Judging from the different agendas at play it doesn.t surprise me that the title is only half of its main character.s moniker. The film seems more at home when detailing the travails of the FBI than on the social aspects of Hoover.s life. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. No one may represent that more than J. Edgar Hoover (Leonardo DiCaprio). He started out relatively innocuously in 1919 and gradually rose to be director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) - a position that Hoover would hold for 48 years and through 8 presidents...
