Competing in the age of streaming is a tough business. At a time when Netflix enjoys a chokehold with its global dominance on the potential subscriber base, the push for quality content stands out of paramount importance.
Taking note of it, HBO took a leap of faith as it diverged away from its tried and tested formula of working productions like the fantasy epics of Game of Thrones to invest in satirical and dark comedies like The White Lotus.

Abigail is heading to DVD and Blu-ray in the UK in a Blood Bath Edition this July – more information on the release here.
For many years, I’ve tried to go in and see movies without watching a frame of footage in advance. In the case of Abigail, this approach proved particularly successful. I knew not much about the film, had avoided the trailers, I just knew it was from the Radio Silence directing team, who’d previously given us the brilliant Ready Or Not (and the two most recent Scream movies).
Accepting the trailer for Abigail was less keen to keep things under wraps, I had an absolute blast with the movie. Starring Melissa Barrera, Dan Stevens and Alisha Weir, I recommend knowing as little as you can before watching the movie.
If you missed it in cinemas as many did, Universal has now confirmed a physical media release too.

Josh Ruben will direct the genre pic from a screenplay by Phillip Murphy, Christopher Landon and Michael Kennedy, with production set for New Zealand. Now the couple must spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives. Heart Eyes, blending horror and comedy, will follow on the success of Scream, Scream VI and Thanksgiving for Spyglass.
Landon, Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks will share producing credits, while Spyglass’ Gary Barber and Chris Stone will serve as executive producers, with Murphy.

Spyglass has been building their horror portfolio over the last couple years, reviving the Scream franchise with Scream (2022) and Scream VI, as well as bringing the world Eli Roth’s long-awaited Grindhouse spin-off Thanksgiving (which is getting a sequel). Now Deadline reports that the Spyglass project Heart Eyes, described as a horror romantic comedy, has started filming in New Zealand, with Olivia Holt of Totally Killer and Mason Gooding from Spyglass’s two Scream movies leading the cast. We don’t know whether or not Gooding is going to show up in Scream 7, but he just can’t seem to avoid the slashers.

Exclusive: Cruel Summer actress Olivia Holt and recent Scream franchise star Mason Gooding are set for the Spyglass’ original horror rom-com, Heart Eyes, which is rolling cameras in New Zealand.
The latest pic builds on the campy horror canon that Spyglass is building in the wake of 2022’s Scream, last year’s Scream VI and Thanksgiving.
In the new pic, when the Heart Eyes Killer strikes Seattle, a pair of co-workers pulling overtime on Valentine’s Day are mistaken for a couple by the elusive couple-hunting killer. Now they must spend the most romantic night of the year running for their lives.
Spyglass has tapped horror comedy filmmaker, Josh Ruben (Werewolves Within and Scare Me) who’ll helm from a screenplay written by Phillip Murphy (The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard) Christopher Landon & Michael Kennedy (Freaky). Courteney Cox Re-Creates Dance From Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark” Video for TikTok Trend
Courteney Cox re-created her “Dancing in the Dark” dance for a TikTok trend.
In recent weeks, TikTokers have taken to asking their moms how they danced in the 1980s and posting videos, many of which are backed by the 1984 song “Smalltown Boy,” by Bronski Beat.
Cox, of course, famously got her start by appearing in the 1984 video for Bruce Springsteen’s “Dancing in the Dark.” (She had only appeared in an episode of As the World Turns prior to being cast in his video.)
On TikTok, she poked fun at her dancing in the 1984 video while also participating in one of the latest trends. Cox took to the social media platform to share a video — captioned “1980’s dancing…in the dark” — with herself dancing to “Smalltown Boy.” Over the video are the words, “Asking my mom how she danced in the 80’s.”
After a few seconds, she shakes her head,...

A movie doesn’t have to be good for it to be Good. Better yet, it doesn’t have to be good for it to be meaningful.
For many, A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge is more than a so-bad-it’s-good rewatch; it’s a film to rally around for its gay subtext (and just plain text). Though it was widely panned at its 1985 release, Freddy’s Revenge has since found a vocal audience in the queer community that celebrates much of what it was initially criticized for.
This week on Bloody FM’s Guide to the Unknown, Kristen and Will discuss the movie alongside the super illuminating documentary Scream, Queen: My Nightmare on Elm Street. The documentary focuses on lead actor Mark Patton’s experience shooting the film as a closeted gay man at the time, going through the inner turmoil of being tasked with playing a...

For those wondering just what Ed Boon has planned for Mortal Kombat 1 in terms of its next crossover with a horror franchise, we may just have gotten our answer. After teasing fans last October over the next big-name horror icon to enter the arena, it would appear that Ghostface from the Scream franchise may be the latest to enter Mortal Kombat.
In a new YouTube video, dataminer Interloko has released audio files from a recent update to Mortal Kombat 1 that have Mileena as the announcer, with the files containing two instances of Mileena announcing Ghostface as the winner. You can find those instances in the video below at 5:18 & 5:21.

The Ghostface Killer won’t leave Sidney Prescott alone, and Neve Campbell is showing her gratitude for it. After much hardship of trying to develop the seventh chapter in the Scream franchise, things are finally starting to take shape and one of the biggest elements is the return of the original final girl! Scream 7 has gone through many changes in cast and crew. The studio lost its two former leading ladies after Melissa Barrera faced controversy over a social media post and Jenna Ortega’s schedule prevented her from returning. In addition, the new director, Christopher Landon, left the project, saying it was a “nightmare.”
The original screenwriter who started it all, Kevin Williamson, is now slated to step in to direct, and Campbell was finally approached by the studio for a deal to return. While she previously had salary issues that kept her from participating in the last film,...

No amount of epic projects letting her leave can stop her from growing and glowing, and Melissa Barrera just proved that. Despite leaving the fan-favorite super-popular horror/mystery Scream franchise, the actress isn’t hesitating to let everyone know through her latest project that she can find her own way in the industry and doesn’t need mammoth franchises to back her up.

This comes after a fan shared insights into what is presumably Barrera’s next big project, which she is writing and developing herself. What’s more is that this project would reportedly not be anything even close to what most fans might be expecting, because it is a lesbian romantic comedy that will inevitably continue Kristen Stewart’s legacy in Hollywood of making the first-ever lesbian rom-com.

Jenna Ortega gained worldwide recognition for her role as Wednesday Addams in the hit Netflix series. Wednesday, executively produced and partially directed by goth legend Tim Burton, acted as a significant career boost for the 21-year-old actress.
For her work in numerous horror projects, Jenna Ortega has been crowned as a prominent “screen queen” in the industry. Despite giving loads of effort to perfectly play Wednesday, Ortega claimed that she would have never gotten the role if two major elements had not appealed to Tim Burton.

All that handwringing over her previous pay on the Scream franchise is water under the bridge now: Neve Campbell, who’s on board for another sequel, says she is “really grateful that they came back to me in a respectful way.”
While attending the return of Reefer Madness: The Musical in Los Angeles on May 30, the actress talked to People about how “those movies have been such a big part of my life and it means so much to me, and I was sad to miss the last one, to not be a part of it.”
“I was really grateful that they came back to me in a respectful way,” she continued. “I think that means a lot to women and to society. I’m grateful to be able to step in into Sidney’s shoes again and tell her story.”
She also said her character, Sidney Prescott, has “inspired a lot of people.

Although the current state of the "Scream" franchise is a giant mess, it's worth remembering that merely a few years ago, its future seemed as bright as ever. 2022's "Scream" was a clear-cut hit at the box office, and it successfully introduced a whole new generation of characters who could be chased around with a knife for many installments to come. "Scream 5" not only did all this while keeping Sidney and Gale in the fold, but it also set the groundwork for the return of Kirby (Hayden Panettiere).
Despite being a fan favorite in "Scream 4," Kirby was tragically left for dead near the end of the movie. How'd she die? Well, she made the tragic mistake of trusting her potential love interest Charlie (Rory Culkin), trying to save him from Ghostface when she should've been saving herself. The good news is that Kirby was soon avenged by her supportive,...

While she’s been part of the global movie and TV show landscape for years now, it’s only after Netflix’s Wednesday that Jenna Ortega rose to such a prominent position. The overwhelming success of The Addams Family spin-off launched its lead actress into global stardom, and now Ortega can pick from countless offers, not tied by nearly as many role limitations as before.
Unfortunately, this also means she’s dropping out of her previous projects.

When Tom Hardy first appeared as the fan-favorite Eddie Brock/Venom, it was largely the ideal combination. The grit, acting chops, and intrepid energy that Hardy brought to the character meant that Sony immediately had a hit on their hands.
While Venom was rated PG-13, it did not need to showcase a large amount of violence and gore in order to attract audiences. That was a job done by the film’s narrative, and the evergreen, oft-hilarious charm of Tom Hardy.

Regardless, Sony did what Sony does, and showed every intention of turning the Hardy-led movie into a full-blown franchise. Our favorite extraterrestrial symbiote, in an unfortunate manner, gave birth to an offspring in the form of Woody Harrelson’s Cletus Kasady / Carnage. However, things did not work out as well as the first time around.

Plot: When a locket is removed from a collapsed fire tower in the woods that entombs the rotting corpse of Johnny, a vengeful spirit spurred on by a horrific 60-year old crime, his body is resurrected and becomes hellbent on retrieving it.
Review: I’ve been waiting my entire life for someone to come along and make “Pov Jason Voorhees.” The concept of following a slasher villain as they go on their journey of mayhem is the stuff of dreams. I’ve always felt that slashers are the prime candidate to deconstruct in an interesting way. Not since Scream has the subgenre been given a unique perspective and had hype behind it. So, like the 1996 classic, I was hoping this would build off of the films that came before it, and bring slasher films to new heights. Instead of a love letter, In A Violent Nature feels like an insult to the genre.

May of 2003 was almost bone-dry for big-screen horror until 20th Century Fox released Wrong Turn; director Rob Schmidt and screenwriter Alan B. McElroy’s collaboration arrived in theaters the weekend after Memorial Day. Later on, the fairly successful film inspired a whole franchise of follow-ups, which exceeded the original in terms of sheer gruesomeness. However, this underrated offering of backwoods horror still delivers in areas its direct descendants do not.
As a reflection of the real world, horror steadily became urbanized. The late 1990s had all but abandoned the great outdoors as a dreadful destination and backdrop, especially in the wake of Scream. No longer did characters have to leave their neighborhood in order to feel threatened. The next decade, however, saw a comeback for travel terror; vacations overseas and across borders commonly unfolded in horrific fashion, and local sojourns, like that of Wrong Turn, did not turn out any better.

It's Friday the 13th for the liars in their pretty little universe, and things are already looking unlucky for the girls in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School Season 1 Episode 5.
Summer is officially underway, and the girls are now up against many threats, with Bloody Rose picking her way through the group with her tests.
It's safe to say that Pretty Little Liars: Summer School sets very different stakes for the girls after the previous season's events, and things may be more complicated than they seem.
Right off the bat, this Spooky Spaghetti trend seems to be getting out of hand, with forum visitors partaking in some truly messed-up viral challenges.
If you're reading this review, you likely already know what that challenge was, but it bears repeating. Slicing into the middle of the forehead. That has to be illegal in multiple ways.

Even though people are used to horror characters not being as intelligent and inventive as they could be, there are a number of protagonists that stand out for their abilities to find a way out of a deadly mess. These include, undoubtedly, Sidney Prescott from the Scream franchise, as well as the leads of 2017’s hits, Get Out and It.
Neve Campbell’s Sidney paved the way for all modern female characters of the genre, and the lead of the horror we’re going to talk about is no exception. This slasher is claimed to be a must-watch because of only her, apart from its impeccably-written plot.
The film centers on the Davisons, an extremely wealthy family whose unity was seemingly broken long ago. In an attempt to mend their family ties, they decide to celebrate their wedding anniversary and invite all four children with their partners.

In 2007, a shy three years removed from 2004’s Alien vs. Predator, the two titans returned to pick up where they left off with Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem. That so happened to be Gunnison, Colorado, where the destruction of a power plant means it’s nigh impossible to see anything going on. That’s not good for anyone — especially audiences.

2024 is half over and while we have seen some brilliant horror films come out this year I don’t think it has been such a great year for the genre. With most horror films flopping at the box office and the dreaded Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sequel coming out it all felt wrong. But don’t worry because I have picked out the 10 best horror films that have come out this year. I haven’t ranked the films in the article and I will update the list as more films come out.

The slasher horror subgenre has its roots in films and stories from the ‘30s and ‘40s. But if you ask casual viewers what they associate with slashers, they’ll probably mention Friday the 13th, Halloween, Scream, and, of course, A Nightmare on Elm Street. Tropes like the final girl, sexual promiscuity, iconic masks and weapons, and a cycle of abuse became common. And even though these films and the subgenre itself were rebooted, reconstructed, and revitalized over the years, the theme of the unwavering nature of evil and the resilience of goodness remained intact. However, since its premiere at Sundance, In a Violent Nature has been touted as a new take on the slasher subgenre for telling the story largely through the perspective of the killer. Is that just a gimmick, or is there some substance to this storytelling technique? Well, let’s find out.

Wes Craven's 1977 film "The Hills Have Eyes," like Tobe Hooper's "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" before it, features a vanload of city folks who find themselves waylaid in a forgotten corner of the American wasteland. In Craven's film, the wasteland is not rural Texas, but the irradiated deserts of Nevada. The protagonists (Dee Wallace is among them) are beset by the brood of the sadistic Papa Jupiter (James Whitworth), including Mars (Lance Gordon), Mercury (Arthur King), and Pluto (Michael Berryman). Years ago, Jupiter moved into the hills with his wife (Cordy Clark) and raised their children to attack and cannibalize passers-through in order to survive. "The Hills Have Eyes" is raw and brutal, but possessed of a winking sense of humor that horror fans will appreciate.

“13 Reasons Why” star Dylan Minnette says his pivot from acting to focus solely on his rock band, Wallows, happened when acting began to feel like “just a job.”

You might not recognize the name immediately, but Dylan Minnette is someone whose face you will definitely remember. Aside from starring in 13 Reasons Why as Clay Jensen, Minnette has appeared in numerous television series in guest roles, such as Lost, Awake, Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy, Supernatural, Prison Break, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Aside from that, he also appeared in the horror movie Let Me In (2010), the thriller film Prisoners (2013), the family comedy film Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day (2014), the family fantasy film Goosebumps (2015), and the horror films Don’t Breathe (2016), The Open House (2018) and Scream (2022).

Scream VII is now moving forward without the previous movie's leads, Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, and while plot details are still under wraps, rumors have claimed that the story will revolve around Sidney (Neve Campbell), Gale (Courteney Cox) and some new characters defending Sid's family from some kind of Ghostface cult.
There have been conflicting reports about exactly how many masked maniacs will be targetting our returning heroes, but thanks to insider Daniel Richtman, we may have a little more to go on regarding the "younger leads" that are currently being cast.
Apparently, there will be a "big time jump" following the events of the last movie, presumably to allow for Sidney's children to have grown to appropriate slasher movie age. Richtman has also heard that this film will be at least partially set in a new town, and is being developed as the first instalment in a new trilogy.

Beginning in the mid-’90s, the franchise quite literally revolutionized the genre with its unique blend of horror, mystery, and satirical humor. Additionally, it has constantly maintained a steadfast climb with the regular addition of new faces alongside popular ones like Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, and Roger L. Jackson. Meanwhile, the latest update from the sets of the upcoming movie, while in the franchise’s interest, may also possibly spell its doom.

“I was fortunate to find success in [acting],” he explained. “I was on 13 Reasons Why and it was really popular and definitely reached a peak in what I’ve had in acting. But it also started to feel like a bit of a job. And I was in a very fortunate position, it was always fun for me, always really inspiring, but then it was just starting to feel like just a job.”

Sean Baker achieved the “singular goal” he’s been working toward his entire filmmaking career on Saturday when he won the 77th annual Cannes Film Festival’s coveted Palme d’Or for his sex worker drama “Anora.”
Speaking breathlessly to the ceremony’s black-tied international audience after thanking the festival jury — as led by Greta Gerwig — and his film’s various collaborators, stars and producers, the acclaimed indie filmmaker turned his attention to his mounting concern over the future of cinema and specifically the movie-going experience.
“This literally has been my singular goal as a filmmaker for the past 30 years, so I’m not really sure what I’m going to do with the rest of my life. But I do know that I will continue to fight for cinema because right now as filmmakers, we have to fight to keep cinema alive,” Baker said. He then turned his attention...

It just had to be, didn’t it.
U.S. distributor Neon only had two movies in the Competition: Anora and The Seed of the Sacred Fig. Neither could have fared any better with the critics and both won prizes tonight.
It was Sean Baker’s Anora that stormed to the top prize on the Riviera, making it a remarkable five Palme d’Or wins in a row for Tom Quinn’s outfit Neon.
“The future of cinema is where it started: in a movie theater,” said Baker, accepting his Palme d’Or. You can watch the acceptance speech below.
Justine Triet’s Anatomy Of A Fall won last year, following the US distributor’s previous acquisitions Triangle Of Sadness, Titane and Parasite.
