Where are all my witches at?
I, like many women of my age, spent a formative part of my youth enamored with the idea of witches. While Buffy the Vampire Slayer wasn’t quite my bag, I adored Charmed. My VHS copy of Practical Magic got more play than a yo-yo. And, of course, I was an avid viewer of Sabrina the Teenage Witch.
Did I myself dabble in magical arts, though? No, and I won’t pretend I did either. But man, did I so often wish that one day I’d just wake up with magical powers. I also wished I’d wake up one day and have a twin, too, as I also voraciously devoured the T*Witches novel series.
When it came to classic Halloween tropes, witches often received the lightest treatment for a long time. Witch media, post the long-standing green-face, wart-nosed, pointy-hat likeness instead...

“Being good or bad isn’t a choice a woman gets to make by herself,” filmmaker Elizabeth Sankey narrates in her spellbinding new documentary, “Witches.” It’s an incisive perspective on an age-old cinematic question that’s never had a good enough answer: “Are you a good witch or a bad witch?” as Glinda once asked. As Sankey might see it, the question itself put Dorothy in danger.
Our ever-shifting sense of women’s autonomy resonates in countless contexts, and that’s worth keeping front of mind throughout this feature-length consideration of postpartum mental health and the historic persecution of women. Weaving personal experience and keen anthropological theory into a lush and haunting tapestry of magical portrayals from pop culture, Sankey achieves an intricate archival exposition backed with tremendous feeling. She uses old film footage, insightful interviews from experts and friends, and select theatrical scenes (all silent) shot specifically for...

As an artwork detailing the testimonies of ordinary women who have faced terrifying post-partum anxiety, depression and psychosis, Elizabeth Sankey’s 90-minute goth-lite documentary Witches succeeds in shedding light on a stigmatized and often silenced phenomenon many new mothers endure. However, the director takes this solid concept and dilutes it with trivial pop feminist pseudo-history, positing a dubious connection between the European and American witch trials of the 16th and 17th centuries and women’s post-birth psychological suffering.
Premiering at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival and set to be distributed by streaming service Mubi, the film is certainly watchable but perhaps only 50 percent compelling.
Sankey argues that post-partum psychotic hallucinations may have led countless women of yore to willingly confess to cavorting with Satan. She showcases little evidence supporting this theory, aside from reading aloud a few sentences from primary sources, and attempts to wrap her suppositions in tritely nebulous metaphors...

As the nights grow longer and the snow begins to fall, we begin to insulate ourselves from the outside world and spend more time with our nearest and dearest. While comforting for others, this time of year can also bring with it the horrors of complicated family dynamics. For every turkey-loving Thanksgiving stan who thrives on big family reunions, there’s another lost and lonely soul looking for a friendly face. Many of us find comfort in spending time with a chosen family of trusted friends, fellow misfits we know will accept us no matter what. But even these bonds can bend. Sometimes they break. "The Amityville Horror" is one of the definitive haunted house films, a classic tale about paranormal activity terrorizing a suburban family with swarming flies, mysterious voices, and sudden illness. Even the windows resemble ominous eyes peering down on the unsuspecting victims. The movie taps into the religious undertones popularized by other 1970s releases such as "The Exorcist" and "The Omen," suggesting there is a Satanic force at work that must be destroyed.
Eventually, the new owners George and Kathy Lutz discover the horrifying history of their new home: Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family with a rifle one year prior, a Satanic worshipper named John Ketchum once lived on the land, and the house itself was built on a Shinnecock burial ground.
Despite receiving mixed reviews for elements like the cheesy portrayal of a possessed George, "The Amityville Horror" ended up having a significant impact on the horror genre.

As the autumn days wear on, horror fans around the world mourn the passing of spooky season and turn their lonely eyes to November. What better film to watch while finishing off the Halloween candy than Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow?
Adapted from Washington Irving’s 1820 short story “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” this icy film begins in an autumnal cornfield and ends on a snowy street just in time for a new century. Burton’s version of the story also features a surprising number of witches, a baffling appearance by Christopher Walken, and one of the most stunning villain reveal dresses in cinematic history.

The Craft writer Peter Filardi has been approached about turning the 1996 teen horror classic into a Broadway musical, Bloody Disgusting has exclusively learned.
“We really just started discussing it,” Filardi tells me from the set of Damn Handy, a short film he’s writing and directing. “[The Craft] was my story, and I got the story credit, so that gives me something called separate rights, which covers theater. I didn’t even know that!”
He continues, “These people with a track record of doing Broadway musicals approached me and asked me if I had the rights and if I was interested. Once lawyers determined that I did have the rights, I said, ‘I’m definitely interested.’ I’ve just given them a free shopping agreement, and they’re going to try to set it up.”
“I would love it if it happened,” Filardi adds.

If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably found yourself reminiscing about the good ol’ 90s – a decade of flannel shirts, dial-up internet, and, of course, those epic cult classics that shaped our pop culture sensibilities.
I’m excited to take you on a colorful journey down 90’s lane as we explore the gems that captured my heart, inspired our fashion choices (no shame in admitting it), and transported us to a time when mixtapes were the ultimate gesture of affection.
So, dust off that neon fanny pack, untangle your Slinky, and let’s dive in!
1 “Clueless” (1995)
Cher’s World, We’re Just Living in It
As if we could forget the iconic Cher Horowitz, the epitome of Beverly Hills fashion and cluelessly endearing antics. “Clueless,” with its impeccable one-liners, extravagant wardrobes, and hilarious commentary on high school life, is a film that still brings smiles to our faces.

The cable network’s annual 31 Nights of Halloween lineup features 18 showings of Hocus Pocus, the beloved 1993 film starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy — and while that may seem like a lot, keep in mind that Freeform aired the Walt Disney flick a whopping 30 (!) times in 2019. (Of course, you can watch Hocus Pocus, as well as its 2022 sequel, as many times as you’d like with a Disney+ subscription, but who are we to suggest a commercial-free viewing experience?...

Few American filmmakers of the last 40 years await a major rediscovery like Hal Hartley, whose traces in modern movies are either too-minor or entirely unknown. Thus it’s cause for celebration that the Criterion Channel are soon launching a major retrospective: 13 features (which constitutes all but My America) and 17 shorts, a sui generis style and persistent vision running across 30 years. Expect your Halloween party to be aswim in Henry Fool costumes.
Speaking of: there’s a one-month headstart on seasonal programming with the 13-film “High School Horror”––most notable perhaps being a streaming premiere for the uncut version of Suspiria, plus the rare opportunity to see a Robert Rodriguez movie on the Criterion Channel––and a retrospective of Hong Kong vampire movies. A retrospective of ’70s car movies offer chills and thrills of a different sort

"X-Men: The Animated Series" remains to this day the pinnacle of Marvel TV — both animation and live-action. It told serialized yet still self-contained stories that adapted classic comic storylines with depth, great action, and fantastic character work.
After that show ended, we got the vastly underrated yet still quite excellent "X-Men Evolution," a show that took a smaller approach that focused on character rather than big world-ending epics. The show reimagined most of the main characters as teenagers, with creator Robert N. Skir once telling Conventional Relations that he wanted "a show about a bunch of kids who are trying really hard not to be superheroes" with the high school setting giving the writers more opportunities to explore the anti-mutant prejudice and discrimination from the comics.

Is there anything scarier than being a teenager? Bd has learned that the Criterion Channel will be launching their 13-film High School Horror collection on September 1!
The streaming service previews, “Relive your high school nightmares with these tales of terror unleashed in classrooms, gyms, locker-lined halls, and cafeterias, where psychotic slashers and supernatural monsters pursue jocks, nerds, and prom queens alike.
“The everyday fears of adolescence—social anxiety! changing bodies!—have inspired some of horror cinema’s most giddily bloodthirsty visions, from VHS-era exploitation shockers like Massacre at Central High and Slumber Party Massacre to ’90s teen-movie touchstones like I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Faculty and cult favorites like Donnie Darko and Battle Royale.”
Of particular note, Dario Argento’s Suspiria will be included in the collection, marking the worldwide streaming premiere of the restored uncut version from Synapse Films!

In this time of geekery and craft reigning supreme, film critics and academics no longer reject horror movies with the knee-jerk certainty some once did. But even now the specter of “elevated horror” (see that concept’s lambasting in Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett’s “Scream 5”) looms over discussions of artier explorations of dread and terror — Ari Aster’s “Midsommar,” Luca Guadagnino’s “Suspiria,” Rose Glass’ “Saint Maud” — that are clearly distinguished from, well, non-elevated horror. The general gist is that these exceptions to the “horror is bad” rule engage your brain more than just showing brains: eaten by zombies or splattered against the wall.
How can films that fire your adrenal glands, send shivers down your spine, raise goosebumps, and quicken your breath — that inspire such an intense physical reaction — also be cerebral experiences? The answer is obvious enough. Viewers forget all the time that, as Anna Karina...

We might be entering the dog days of summer but Hulu isn’t slowing down. The streamer’s list of new releases for August 2023 is a pretty impressive collection of content.
The biggest Hulu original this month is season 3 of true crime comedy Only Murders in the Building on Aug. 8. This time around Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are joining the already-stacked cast that features Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. This season’s central murder appears to take place at a theater (outside the building) but I think we’ll let it slide.
That’s far from the only worthwhile original in August as Aug. 2 sees the premiere of the third and final season of superb comedy Reservation Dogs. That will be followed by South Korean sci-fi series Moving on Aug. 9, Solar Opposites season 4 on Aug. 14, and A Murder at the End of the World on Aug. 29. Of course,...

When it comes to horror movies at the box office, Sony resurrected its track record this past weekend with the opening of Blumhouse/Stage 6 Films’ fifthquel, Insidious: The Red Door which had a $32.65M domestic opening, $64M Worldwide debut.
On the domestic front, that’s the second best horror opening for Sony after 2004’s The Grudge which debuted to $39.1M. It’s also the second best domestic debut for an Insidious movie after Chapter 2‘s $40.2M opening. Even more amazing, this 13-year-old horror franchise stole the No. 1 thunder away from Disney/Lucasfilm’s legacy sequel Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny which only did $26.5M in weekend two.
While Sony pre-pandemic had horror sleepers such as Don’t Breathe and Escape Room, the Culver City lot wasn’t reaping the riches of genre post Covid like Paramount, Universal and Warner Bros. Now, Sony has posted a U.S./Canada start...

A new episode of the Revisited video series has just been released, and in this one we’re looking back at a movie that some may not consider to be a horror movie, but at the very least it is an “experimental psychological thriller” from a highly respected genre director. The director in question is David Lynch, and the movie we’re talking about today is the 2006 release Inland Empire (get it Here). To revisit Inland Empire with us, check out the video embedded above.
Written and directed by Lynch, Inland Empire tells the following story over the course of its 180 minute running time: Nikki, an actress, takes on a role in a new film, and because her husband is very jealous, her co-star Devon gets a warning not to make any romantic overtures — especially since the characters they play are having an affair. Both actors learn that the project...

In a world that often celebrates the conventional and the mainstream, there’s something to be said for those who don’t quite fit in. Those of us who feel like outsiders can find solace in the weirder corners of pop culture, where the misfits and rejects are given a chance to shine. And when it comes to horror movies, there’s a whole slew of films where the weirdo reigns supremed. Here are 10 horror movies for outcasts and rebels – for all the weirdos who want something a little different from their scares.
1. The Craft (1996)
This teen horror classic is all about the power of outsiders. When new girl Sarah (Robin Tunney) joins a Catholic high school in Los Angeles, she falls in with a trio of misfit girls who practice witchcraft. As they explore their newfound abilities, they begin to attract attention from other students, and soon things spiral out of control.

The 23rd annual Boston Underground Film Festival took place at The Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, Ma from March 22 to March 26. The genre-blending lineup included premieres, festival favorites, anticipated titles, shorts, and more.

The Unheard
The festival’s opening night kicked off with the world premiere of The Unheard, which pairs the exciting New England talents of director Jeffrey A. Brown, following up his dynamic debut The Beach House, and writers Michael and Shawn Rasmussen, hot off the success of Alexandre Aja’s Crawl. All three were in attendance for a post-screening Q&a.
Hearing impaired since the age of 8 as a result of meningitis, 20-year-old Chloe Grayden undergoes an experimental gene editing procedure to restore her hearing, which coincides with a homecoming to prepare her family’s empty summer house for sale. She’s the first patient in the clinical trial to show positive results,...

Mona Awad's 2019 novel "Bunny" was bound to be adapted for the screen. Its mix of fairy tale and horror themes combined with classic teen movie aesthetics seemed tailor-made for the BookTok demographic -- that's the literature subcommunity on TikTok -- which has been a reliable source of new material for Hollywood in recent years. And would you believe, the book about a gaggle of rich girls who dabble in magic, and an outsider who gets sucked into their world of dark academia did indeed prove popular with the BookTok crowd, leading Hollywood into a bidding war for the rights.
Thus far, AMC has snapped up the television rights, but as Deadline reports, J.J. Abrams's Bad Robot has now optioned Awad's novel for a big-screen adaptation. And considering Awad took inspiration from such movies as "Heathers," "Carrie," "The Craft," and "Mean Girls," it seems there is lots to draw from in that department.

Anyone who has met her will most likely say the same thing, she’s a joy to meet and absolutely fantastic.
