The humble beginnings of Matt Stone and Trey Parker's "South Park" are nothing short of inspiring, with two friends crafting a stop-motion short film that would evolve into one of the most popular and longest-running shows in television history. "The Spirit of Christmas" was first released in 1992 (colloquially referred to as "Jesus vs. Frosty") and again in 1994 as a Christmas card (colloquially known as "Jesus vs. Santa" to differentiate) Fox executive Brian Graden had commissioned to send to his friends. Parker and Stone then developed the characters and the mountain town setting into what would become "South Park," and the rest is history.
This timeline certainly makes "South Park" sound like one of those dreamy Hollywood Cinderella stories in which two unknown comedy animators were plucked from obscurity to become billionaires and one award shy of earning Egot status. However, this narrative ignores the countless other projects -- both...

One of the most memorable characters on the long-running NBC sitcom "Frasier" isn't one of the fussy humans that surround radio psychiatrist Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) but rather his father Martin's (John Mahoney) Jack Russell Terrier, Eddie. Eddie is a fully-fledged character who sometimes seems even more human than his two-legged counterparts, showing love to Martin and the Crane's live-in housekeeper, Daphne (Jane Leeves) while serving as Frasier's arch-nemesis. Portrayed by dog actor Moose and later his son, Enzo, Eddie became a vital part of the series' comedic chemistry. However, there's an old adage about never working with animals or children because they can be difficult and chaotic, and that was often the case on the set of "Frasier."

Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" became a bona fide hit this year. After it premiered this July, the film grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide, which, according to Box Office Mojo, makes it the highest-grossing movie of the year so far, beating films like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," "Oppenheimer," and "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3." Since it's pulled in passionate audiences worldwide, it's no wonder Mattel is eager to make even more movies inspired by its popular toy brands. Its upcoming film slate is being dubbed the "Mattel Universe." While the success of "Barbie" has certainly helped push the company to begin development on these films, the Mattel Universe has actually been years in the making. Let us explain.

As Barbie continues its global domination, grossing over $1 billion at the box office after only its third week of release, the appropriate parties continue victory laps around their respective Malibu Dream Homes.
Last week, in between fielding questions about Hollywood’s dual strikes, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav and other Wbd execs invoked the Barbie name several times during the company’s second-quarter earnings report, noting that the movie will be a boon to third-quarter.
During Mattel’s quarterly earnings report at the end of July, CEO Ynon Kreiz called Barbie a “milestone” in the toymaker’s history. “The biggest shift in our strategy and in our DNA was to realize that people who buy our product are not just consumers, they are fans,” said Kreiz.

Mariah Carey is famous for topping the charts. In fact, she holds the record for the most number-one hits by a solo artist on the Billboard Hot 100 (19), and she became the first artist ever to hit number-one in four different decades. But of course no one can send every song they’ve recorded to the top of the charts. A number of Carey’s greatest hits didn’t reach the summit, but they belong in any discussion of her storied career. Scroll down for our countdown of her best non-chart-toppers.
Early in her career it was hard to find Carey singles anywhere but number-one. The first four from her very first album reached that position. The 1990s continued at that same pace: a whopping 14 of her chart leaders were released in that decade. The 2000s were less auspicious for her: she had career and tabloid trouble when her movie “Glitter” and its accompanying soundtrack underperformed.

Mattel is developing the live-action family drama Christmas Balloon, which will be written by Gabriela Revilla Lugo (A Million Little Things) based off a true story.
The film follows a young girl, Dáyami, living in a Mexican border town who tries to send her Christmas list to Santa tied to a balloon. The balloon is found by Randy and Marcella Heiss, a couple in Arizona grieving the loss of their own child, who make it their mission to fulfill the girl’s touching Christmas wishes. Mattel worked with the couple and donated toys to fulfill Dáyami’s wish towards a brighter future.

Mattel, the popular toy company, intends to turn yet another children’s game into a big-screen extravaganza.
The company’s film division has announced plans to develop Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em, the tabletop game featuring battling robots, as a live-action movie starring Vin Diesel.
“To take the classic Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em game, with Mattel as my partner, and align it with the kind of world-building, franchise-making success we have had with Universal, is truly exciting,” said Diesel, whose production company One Race Films is working on the project with Universal Pictures.
Mattel has several film adaptations in the works, some more curious than others. The growing list of properties in development include “Wishbone,” based on the ’90s TV show about the well-read Jack Russell terrier; “Barbie” starring Margot Robbie and written by Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach; and “Uno,” a heist comedy centered on the card game led by rapper Lil Yachty.

Universal Pictures is developing a live-action film version of the iconic children’s TV show “Wishbone” alongside toymaker Mattel, the two announced on Wednesday.
The TV show, which ran on PBS from 1996 through 2001, followed Wishbone, a Jack Russell terrier, who would daydream about being in some of the most famous and cherished literary moments that often mirrored his family’s real-life situations. Mattel’s film division, which got off the ground in 2018, is rebooting “Wishbone” into a modern, four-quadrant comedy.
Roy Parker, writer of The Blacklist’s screenplay “This House is Not for Sale,” will write the script.
“Our deep library of iconic franchises continues to offer cinematic storytelling opportunities,” executive producer and head of Mattel Films Robbie Brenner said in a statement. “We’re thrilled to be working with Peter Farrelly, Roy Parker and Universal to take the beloved dog classic into a new direction with a modern reimagination of the franchise.

The first batch of Marvel stories will be available today on Yarn, which reaches millions of primarily young users with Mammoth’s new-tech storytelling approach, which the company frames as “interactive multimedia micro-entertainment.”
The upshot of that terminology: Marvel fans with Yarn will get the consumer experience of engaging their favorite Marvel characters from film and television through their mobile device with phone texts and an interactive narrative. That narrative is rooted in the illusion that the Yarn user is personally interacting with the heroes.
Yarn has become a dominant destination in widening field of mobile storytelling, with more than 100 million stories read to date. Yarn is popular among Millennials (18-...

Between 2006 and 2017, Barry Blumberg played an integral role in the development of Smosh, which began as two guys making silly videos in a bedroom and evolved into a full-fledged network of comedic content. Blumberg left his post as Chief Content Officer of Defy Media last year, leaving us wonder what he would do next.
Now we know. According to Variety, Blumberg has been working since February as the Chief Content Officer of Mammoth Media, a mobile media company that has launched multiple apps aimed at Gen Z consumers.
As Mammoth's Cco, Blumberg will oversee the company's content operations, which will be spread across multiple platforms. The Internet is a machine that reminds its users that the 1990s happened, and its main goal is to tackle each and every single thing that happened in those ten years through an ironic lens. As such, it was only a matter of time before the classic PBS show "Wishbone" was parodied on Funny Or Die.
Only this time, the Jack Russell terrier's adventures go decidedly darker. We definitely didn't ever expect Wishbone to provide more kid friendly dramatizations of books by authors who are a bit darker than Charles Dickens or Mark Twain. Although we do admit that we'd be interested in seeing an entire episode of "The Road" with Wishbone.
But really, why not a real reboot of Wishbone starring Uggie? Make it happen, Hollywood.

Alexandre Dumas was a master of French literature, a prolific author who penned at least two monumental classics, and one of the most influential individuals of mixed-raced ancestry of his time. Paul W.S. Anderson directed Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil. It’s a match made in heaven! There has already been approximately one adaptation of The Three Musketeers for each of the book’s ~700 pages — and that’s not even including Wishbone — but Anderson clearly hopes to bring his own personal action-packed, people-sliding-on-their-knees-and-ducking-backwards-while-shooting style of filmmaking to the classic tale of Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and d’Artagnan. Orlando Bloom, Anderson’s wife Milla Jovovich,...
