Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy still remains one of the most iconic comic book movie trilogies of all time, since it introduced a plethora of villains long before MCU was a thing. One of those villains was Molina’s Doc Ock.
Molina portrayed the character’s arc flawlessly, transitioning from a brilliant scientist to a mind-controlled villain and ultimately becoming a genuine hero. Molina excelled in both emotional and action-packed scenes, adding depth to the character of Doc Ock and making him one of Spider-Man’s most compelling movie villains.
Now in his recent interview with Vanity Fair, Molina revealed that he was surprised he was asked to reprise his role. He was a bit worried however due to his advanced age, but Pascal and Watts reassured him they had the technology to “fix it.”
“Coming back 17 years later to play the character again, no one was more surprised than me.

Sam Raimi’s ‘Spider-Man’ trilogy remains one of the most iconic comic book movie trilogies, introducing numerous villains before the MCU era. Among them was Molina’s portrayal of Doc Ock.
Molina’s seamless portrayal captured the character’s evolution from a brilliant scientist to a mind-controlled villain and eventual hero. Excelling in both emotional and action-packed scenes, Molina added depth to Doc Ock, solidifying him as one of Spider-Man’s most captivating movie villains.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Molina disclosed his surprise at being approached to reprise his role. Despite some concerns about his age, Pascal and Watts reassured him they had the technology to “fix it.”

There are any number of actors who could have taken on the role of Dr. Otto Octavius in 2004's Spider-Man 2, but Sam Raimi made a somewhat unlikely choice with Alfred Molina. However, it would prove to absolutely be the right one.
The actor made Doctor Octopus his own and, even two decades later, his Doc Ock is still considered one of the best comic book supervillains to ever grace the screen.
In a recent interview, Molina reflected on his career and admitted he was surprised to be considered seeing as he was best known at the time for his roles in Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark and Frida.
"It was a big surprise to me, because it's not the kind of movie that I imagined myself to be qualified for. You always think of these big action films as [casting] physical types, and I've definitely never been that.

Alfred Molina Reflects on His Doc Ock Return in Spider-Man: No Way Home - Main Image
Alfred Molina recently opened up about reprising his iconic role of Doc Ock in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The veteran actor first played the fan-favorite villain in Spider-Man 2 where he faced off against Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man. He reprised the role again in the MCU film alongside the other villain actors in past Spider-Man franchise.
A lot of fans were delighted when Molina returned to the role after almost two decades and they believe that the actor still delivered an impressive performance just like his first appearance.

According to 85% of Gold Derby’s 2024 Golden Globes predictors, former Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress champion Emma Stone (2016’s “La La Land”) is practically assured a repeat victory thanks to her work in the fantasy epic “Poor Things.” Assuming this decisive opinion is truly reflective of those of Golden Globes voters, it would only make sense for her to leverage that love into a same-year Best TV Comedy Actress notice for her performance on the buzzy new Showtime series “The Curse.”
Were she to prevail on her potential bids for said big screen and small screen projects, she would make history as the youngest individual to simultaneously achieve both types of acting Golden Globe wins.

She’s been nominated for seven BAFTAs (winning one), seven Golden Globes (winning two), a couple of Oscars and an Emmy. She’s worked with armfuls of top directors including Steven Spielberg, Tim Burton and David Cronenberg. And 40 years ago, she created one of sitcom’s best-loved characters as the capricious Queen Elizabeth (Queenie to her pals) in Blackadder.
And now Miranda Richardson has proven herself so good she’s been cast not once but twice in Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens, first playing Madame Tracy in series one, and now taking on the tailor-made role of Shax, who becomes Hell’s representative on Earth after Crowley (David Tennant) gets fired.
What better time to revisit some of Miranda Richardson’s most memorable performances, from her impressive film debut in Dance With a Stranger to her more recent appearances in Harry Potter and Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None?...

Following her surprising (some thought shocking) Best Supporting Actress triumph at the Academy Awards in 1993 for her role in “My Cousin Vinny,” poor Marisa Tomei has been forced to endure a Mount Everest of disrespect. Her name has become literally Exhibit A for what’s wrong with he voting process, a punchline of outrage – the poster child of head-scratching awards season jokes. For years, she topped the list of “How the hell did this happen?” Oscar moments.
Forget the fact that in the years that followed her win, Tomei has generated another pair of supporting nominations – for “In the Bedroom” in 2002 (a Todd Field movie – hello) and “The Wrestler” in 2009. The presumption was that Tomei wasn’t nearly a talented enough actress to win, though they usually don’t find a whole lot of lousy performers generating three Oscar nominations. No matter. The prevailing wisdom was that she was a...

As we approach O-Day and the 95th Academy Awards on March 12, it’s always fun to go back and look at the Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress categories and revel in some of the trivia and shockers that have gone down on the awards season’s biggest stage. This is the rare year when Meryl Streep isn’t in the running, as her 21 overall nominations in the acting categories are nearly double the number of her closest female pursuer, Katherine Hepburn, who has 12. However, Hepburn still holds the all-time Oscar record with four acting wins. Streep has a mere three.
Here are some other actress category factoids to chew on:
Should Cate Blanchett win Best Actress this year for her role in “Tar,” she would tie Streep, Ingrid Bergman and Frances McDormand for second place behind Hepburn among actresses with three triumphs apiece. All four of Hepburn’s wins...

In between his mega-hit “Back to the Future” sequels and his Oscar juggernaut crowdpleaser “Forrest Gump,” Robert Zemeckis directed the sublime black comedy “Death Becomes Her,” released to theaters 30 years ago on July 31, 1992. In a summer of mostly safe, audience-friendly comedies like “Sister Act” and “HouseSitter,” “Death Becomes Her” entered the marketplace an oddball piece of dark, absurdist humor that didn’t fit into a clear category. Let’s take a moment and reflect on the “Death Becomes Her” 30th anniversary.

“Borat Subseqent Moviefilm” star Sacha Baron Cohen made history at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night, becoming the first actor to win twice for playing the same character in an original film and its sequel.
Cohen took home the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy award for the “Borat” sequel. He previously won in the same category in 2007 for the first “Borat” film. In addition to Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, Cohen also accepted the Golden Globe award for Best Musical or Comedy, which “Borat Subseqent Moviefilm” won earlier in the ceremony.
While Cohen is not expected to garner an Academy Award nomination for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” he is a top contender in the Best Supporting Actor category at the Oscars. Long live the queen, but not Olivia Colman’s Golden Globes record. The three-time champ suffered her first loss(es) on Sunday night, losing Best TV Drama Actress to Emma Corrin, her co-star on “The Crown,” and Best Film Supporting Actress to Jodie Foster for “The Mauritanian.”
Colman had entered the night with a perfect 3-for-3 record, having garnered Best TV Supporting Actress for “The Night Manager” in 2017, Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress for “The Favourite” in 2019 and Best TV Drama Actress for “The Crown” last year.
Most didn’t expect Colman to maintain her flawless record. She was in second place in the TV drama actress odds, behind Corrin, and in third in the film supporting actress odds, trailing Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”) and Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), while Foster was in fourth.

This year’s Golden Globe Awards will be singular in a lot of ways, from its live-virtual hybrid to the fact that virtually all of its movie awards will go to films that premiered on VOD or streaming services. In virtually every category, the movie that wins will be the lowest-grossing movie ever to win in that category. You can thank the Covid-inspired theater closings for that.
Here are some other records that might be broken Sunday night:
• If “Nomadland” or “Promising Young Woman” wins Best Motion Picture – Drama, it would be the first movie directed by a woman to win in the category, and the second to win in either of the best-picture categories.
• If Chloe Zhao (“Nomadland”), Regina King (“One Night in Miami”) or Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”) wins best director, it’ll be the second time that award has gone to a woman, after Streisand for “Yentl.

Nominations for the 78th Annual Golden Globe Awards were announced Wednesday morning by Sarah Jessica Parker and Taraji P. Olivia Colman has a perfect record at the Golden Globes, going 3-0, and she can improve on that tally in a huge way in February. The Oscar winner is the favorite in two races, which would make her the fifth performer to snag two Globes in one night.
Colman is comfortably out front in our Best TV Drama Actress odds for “The Crown” at 10/3. As the defending champ, she’d be the first person to go back to back in the category since Claire Danes did it in 2012 and ’13 for “Homeland.” Colman would also join a short list of multiple winners in the category — only three other people have won twice, while Danes has prevailed three times, and Angela Lansbury holds the record with four.

Amy Adams and Regina King will be Golden Globe winners and losers next month. The double nominees are up against each other in the same two categories — Best Film Supporting Actress and Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actress — and our early predictions are forecasting one win for each of them.
King has a commanding lead in the film race for “If Beale Street Could Talk,” boasting 16/5 odds to 39/10 for Adams, who’s nominated for “Vice” and is in second. The critical darling, King has practically swept the critics circuit so far, including victories at the New York Film Critics Circle and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and has been the “representative win” for “Beale Street.” She’s also fresh off her third Emmy triumph in four years, for “Seven Seconds.”

Double Golden Globes duel: Amy Adams or Regina King could be 5th performer to win twice in one night
Amy Adams and Regina King will have a double showdown at the Golden Globe Awards. The stars are nominated in two categories, Best Film Supporting Actress and Best Limited Series/TV Movie Actor. If either goes 2-for-2, she’d be the fifth performer to win two Globes in one night.
Adams’ and King’s bids for “Vice” and “If Beale Street Could Talk” on the film side were widely expected; they were 1-2 in our predictions and are in the same positions in our combined Oscar odds. But their duel on the TV side was a little less secure. Adams was in the No. 1 spot all season for her HBO limited series “Sharp Objects,” while King was in the precarious fifth spot for Netflix’s “Seven Seconds.”

Fresh off her Emmy win for “Seven Seconds” as grieving mother Latrice Butler, Regina King finds herself in the enviable position of earning Oscar buzz for her performance in “If Beale Street Could Talk.” Both performances will be eligible at the upcoming Golden Globes where she could very well become just the fifth actor in Golden Globes history to win two awards in one night. The actress has only been nominated once at the Golden Globes before, and considering how much the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) loves rewarding “new” people every year, she’s in a good position to win at least one by the end of the night.

Mike Newell is a director I bring up far more than one might imagine given how widely underappreciated he seems to be. Though he may always be best known for his films that – made a dent in the overall cultural awareness (Four Weddings and a Funeral), managed a certain cult following (Into the West), involve young wizards (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), or capitalize on their cast (Donnie Brasco), much of his best work remains virtually unseen. Whether it’s The Good Father, Enchanted April,, or An Awfully Big Adventure, to name only a few, much of his best work is all but unknown outside the circles of the most devout cinephiles. Even some of the more recognizable efforts that are perhaps avoided with good reason – Pushing Tin, Mona Lisa Smile, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time – are difficult to fault in terms of their direction, and...

Did you know the earliest Oscar year which boasts 20 acting nominees who are still with us is 1992? It's the 25th anniversary of that year and that's the furthest back in time you can go from which all the acting nominees are still walking this earth. With the very noticeable exception of long retired Gene Hackman (no one has been able to convince him to come back to the movies -- and directors have tried!) most of them are still working, too. The lesson is simple: cherish your favorite actors while they're with us because no one lasts forever... except through their art!

Genre filmmaker Robert Rodriguez's El Rey Network announced today that Alfred Molina (The Da Vinci Code, Spider Man 2) has been cast as Andres Galan in the network's upcoming scripted original set to premiere July 2014. Previously announced cast members include Gabriel Luna, Nicky Whelan and Neil Hopkins.
Created by Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, and produced in association with K/O Paper Products, the coveted writing/producing team behind Sleepy Hollow, Fringe , Star Trek and the Transformer franchise, Matador will feature Molina as Andrew Galan, a man who built his fortune in the telecom industry, but his true passion is soccer. As owner of the ascendant La Riot franchise, he is celebrated in both the sports and business worlds. But there is another world that he operates in -- as a member of an elite group of powerful global players, ruthless individuals who can effect world events on a scale that one would never imagine. What Galan doesn't know is that there is a mole in his midst. One of his new players, Tony Bravo, is actually an undercover operative, sent in to expose him and his cohorts. As Tony and Galan grow closer, the fate of their relationship may very well determine the fate of the world.
Irreverent and action-packed, Matador chronicles the unlikely rise of Antonio "Matador" Bravo, a popular soccer star, who comes to be known as much for his playboy antics off the field as his dynamic moves on it. But what his fans and family don't realize is that it's all a cover--in truth, he is a skilled covert operative executing missions for a little known branch of the CIA. “Matador” has the kind of fame and notoriety that affords him access to powerful circles of corruption and villainy. But, in balancing the dueling roles in which he's been cast, he will be forced to confront the question of his true identity...and it is this mission which will prove to be his most dangerous.
Robert Rodriguez, El Rey Network's chairman and founder, is set to direct the first episode which will be penned by showrunners, co-creators and executive producers Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin
An accomplished London-born actor whose diverse and distinguished gallery of performances have led to a lengthy and triumphant career in film, television and the stage, Alfred Molina is best known for his roles in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 and Steven Soderberg’s Frida. Molina made his American film debut in Raiders of the Lost Ark and later appeared in Letter to Brezhnev, but his movie breakthrough came two years later when he portrayed Kenneth Halliwell, the tragic lover of playwright Joe Orton, in Stephen Frears' Prick Up Your Ears. His other feature film credits include The Da Vinci Code, Boogie Nights, Magnolia , Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time , The Pink Panther 2, Enchanted April, Not Without My Daughter , The Perez Family, Anna Karenina and Chocolat , among others. On television, he most recently starred on NBC’s Law & Order: Los Angeles and David E. Kelley’s TNT drama series Monday Mornings. Molina’s stage work includes two major Royal National Theatre productions, Tennessee Williams' The Night of the Iguana and David Mamet's Speed the Plow, as well as his Broadway debut in Yasmina Reza's Art, for which he received a Tony Award® nomination. Molina also performed in the highly celebrated UK-based Donmar Warehouse production of Red which opened on Broadway in April 2010 and for which Mr. Molina received rave reviews and a Tony Award® nomination. Most recently, Molina completed the feature film Love Is Strange opposite John Lithgow for director Ira Sachs. The film premiered at Sundance this year, and will be released later in the year by Sony Classics. He also shot the feature films, Swelter for director/writer Keith Parmer, We'll Never Have Paris for director/writer Simon Helberg with co-stars Zachary Quinto and Maggie Grace, Return to Zero with co-star Minnie Driver and The Normal Heart for HBO in which he co-stars opposite Mark Ruffalo and Julia Roberts.
Matador executive producers are Jay Beattie and Dan Dworkin, also showrunners, alongside executive producers Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Andrew Orci. Also joining as executive producers are Heather Kadin of K/O Paper Products; Robert Rodriguez and FactoryMade Ventures and El Rey Network co-founders John Fogelman and Cristina Patwa.

One of the more fascinating pre-Oscar nominations races as far as I'm concerned is the race for Best Actress. It's more-or-less a foregone conclusion Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine) is going to win, but the nominees aren't as cut and dry... at least not the final nomination. Last night Blanchett walked home with a Golden Globe for Best Actress (Drama) alongside Amy Adams who won Best Actress (Musical/Comedy) for her work in American Hustle, beating Meryl Streep (August: Osage County). That is unless you considered Julie Delpy (Before Midnight), Greta Gerwig (Frances Ha) or Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Enough Said) serious competition. So now we come to predicting who will end up celebrating an Oscar nomination in the Best Actress category come Thursday morning and as far as I can tell, Cate Blanchett (Blue Jasmine), Emma Thompson (Saving Mr. Banks), Judi Dench (Philomena) and Sandra Bullock (Gravity) are going to make the...

When Helen Mirren swept all the precursor prizes on her way to winning an Oscar for "The Queen" in 2006, she also added a second Globe to her mantle for her performance in the telefilm "Elizabeth." However, she was not the first woman to pull off this double act. Another Dame, Joan Plowright, took home the supporting awards for both film ("Enchanted April") and television ("Stalin") back in 1992. This year, Julia Louis-Dreyfus is poised to repeat this feat. While she holds the record for most Emmy nominations by a funny woman (14) and is the only series regular to win Emmys for three different laffers, she has won just one of her four Golden Globes bids: the catch-all supporting category in 1994 for "Seinfeld." After taking home two Emmys in a row for her starring role on the laffer "Veep", Louis-Dreyfus leads the TV Comedy Actress category at the Golden Globes. With six Editors,...

From “A Room with a View” to “Enchanted April,” it’s been a movie truism that British people have to leave Britain if they want to unshackle themselves from their soul-crushing Britishness. And so we have “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” in which a handful of pensioners set off to retire in India, where they learn life lessons, fall in love, and get a second chance at being useful. It’s basically a feel-good fantasy for the Rascal set, but “Marigold” proves itself rather hard to resist, from the colorful, sun-soaked delights of...

Brit director Mike Newell, whose big-budget studio entries Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Prince of Persia are a far cry from earlier works such as Four Weddings and Funeral and Enchanted April, will begin shooting David Nicholls' adaptation of Charles Dickens' Great Expectations in the UK on October 10. Newell has lured a bevy of top Brit talent: Helena Bonham Carter, Ralph Fiennes, Robbie Contrane, Jason Flemyng, Sally Hawkins and The Borgias ingenue Holliday Grainger. Nicholls' recent adaptation of his own novel, One Day (directed by Lone Scherfig, with Anna Hathaway and Jim Sturgess), wasn't the career boost he may have hoped. Dickens should be more felicitous. Historically, Dickens' sprawling narratives have worked on film; Great Expectations has been adapted some 17 ...

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time has a fair amount going against it out of the gates. It’s (sort of) based on a video game, which isn’t exactly a golden ticket, screams of wild action flick (which is plus or minus perhaps), is directed by Mike Newell (who is better known for things like Enchanted April and Four Weddings and a Funeral, as opposed to wild, action flicks), and its marketing campaign seems hell bent on revealing as little about the actual plot as possible. That’s just for starters.
Of course, it has a lot going for it as well. Jake Gyllenhaal, who I’ve liked since Donnie Darko, offers the hope of adding a more serious ability to deliver lines than the standard muscle-bound adventurer. Gemma Arterton is becoming some measure of it girl recently, adding to the film’s level of interest. It also...

Craig here with the next Take Three.
This week: Miranda Richardson
Take One: Collateral marriage damage
If you want nearly two hours of Jeremy Irons and Juliette Binoche miserably humping each other in dull, anonymous locations (all frightfully well lit of course) then Damage is good to go. Louis Malle's, and scriptwriter David Hare's, adaptation of Josephine Hart's novel, about a member of Parliament's affair with his son's girlfriend, is rather too inert and tasteful for its own good, and was only partially praised but largely ignored perhaps for those reasons. Many liked it, but many more had issues with it (or so I've read). I had a hard time remembering much about the film, save for the sullen, cheerless sex scenes mentioned above... and one other aspect: Miranda Richardson, playing Irons' character's dutiful wife. Gosh, I love me some Binoche, but good grief Richardson owned this one.

Illustration by Chris Morris Mike Newell has proven one of Hollywood's most versatile directors. After graduating from TV to movies with such hits as "Enchanted April" and "Four Weddings and a Funeral," the British helmer has jumped from a franchise tentpole ("Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire") to a literary drama ("Love in the Time of Cholera") and now a Jerry Bruckheimer extravaganza, Disney's "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," which opens Friday.
The Hollywood Reporter: This is your first Bruckheimer experience. What's it like in his world?
Mike Newell: It's fantastic to be able to make a movie of that particular genre when the guy's still here. Most of the guys that make genres important, like John Ford, are dead. But Jerry's alive and kicking and making movies as fast as he can crank them out. You'd be mad not to say yes (to doing one...

The latest videogame to inspire a big screen outing, can Disney’s Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time deliver on the promise of the source material?
What Is It
It's the latest attempt to break the curse of the videogame movie, and one that lots and lots of money is being thrown at. It might need it too: the graveyard of videogame adaptations is well populated, with even the most successful to date - the original Tomb Raider - failing to deliver a decent film to match the box office takings (a reboot is, somewhat inevitably, in the works). The less said about the likes of Max Payne, Hitman and such like the better.
Prince Of Persia is a different beast, though. It's based on the gaming franchise that Jordan Mechner sparked into life in the late 1980s, and that's seen many different instalments since. Action adventures at heart,...

One of the shrewdest Oscarologists on the planet is Tariq Khan of Fox News, who often generously shares his views of current and past derbies with Gold Derby readers. Here he takes a nostalgic look at the past two decades, offering his take on the most competitive derbies. Words below are Tariq's. Thanks, m'friend!
We’ve often discussed those Oscar races that seem just too close to call . . . where it’s clear (or at least seems clear) that the eventual winner will nab the Oscar with only a few more votes than his or her nearest competitor. While we can never really know for sure (unless we get one of those top jobs at the accounting firm of PricewaterhouseCoopers,) we do have some idea of what may have been the closest races in Oscar history. Allow me to present what I believe were the 10 closest acting races over the course of the past 20 years.

Bask in the warmth and enchantment of Italy without leaving Seattle during Taproot Theatre Company?s production of Enchanted April. Elizabeth von Arnim?s resplendent 1920s novel comes to life on stage in this Tony Award-nominated play by Matthew Barber. The enticement of an enchanting Italian holiday captivates the hearts of two British housewives on a drizzly London afternoon in 1922, and fills their imaginations with wisteria and sunshine. By the time they arrive at their Mediterranean villa, an aging matron and a young socialite have joined their quest for something more. The gardens, sea, cinnamon and pasta are just the beginning of the transformation they discover. Enchanted April, directed by associate artistic director Karen Lund, opens on September 25 and runs through October 24 with low-price previews on September 23 & 24, plus a pay-what-you-can performance on September 30.
