“You can be blasé about some things, Rose, but not about Titanic!”
Those words, spoken by the grandiose villain Cal Hockley to his dispassionate fiancée, Rose Dewitt Bukater, proved true both for the then-unprecedented ship and its fateful journey in 1912 and the record-breaking juggernaut film that told its story in 1997.
Twenty years after the film’s release, it’s hard not to see Titanic as an inevitable success: one of this century’s greatest love stories featuring two of today’s top stars, Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, set against the backdrop of one of humanity’s greatest tragedies.
But before the film’s release, it was the subject of much scrutiny, with many mocking its premise, excessive budget and pushed release date. Before Rose and Jack ever made it to theaters, Titanic was nearly dead in the water, with two studios -- Paramount and Fox -- shouldering the financial burden of the $200 million budget, which at the time...

Caniba (Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Verena Paravel)
As part of the groundbreaking Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab, Lucien Castaing-Taylor and Véréna Paravel have established themselves at the forefront of modern documentary filmmaking, most notably with their landmark 2012 film Leviathan. In their second collaboration this year (after somniloquies, which premiered at Berlin), the two seem to be engaging with a more typical documentary subject, though the form of Caniba remains to be seen.

Chicago – Put it in the books. The highly successful and popular Asian Pop-Up Cinema in Chicago closed their 2016 Fall Season with “Round Trip Heart,” a Japanese film from female director Yuki Tanada. Ms. Tanada tells the story of Hachiko, a food cart attendant who works on the “Romance Train.” She temporarily goes off track when a mysterious stranger reads a private note from her mother, and insists on taking the buttoned-up woman on a journey to find that mother. Tanada appeared on behalf of her film at the final Asian Pop-Up Cinema screening for 2016.
Yuki Tanada began her film career in 2004, writing and directing the saucy “Moon to Cherry,” about members of a college porn-writing club. Other films written and directed by her include “Million Yen Girl” (2008) and the film that screened at the Asian Pop-Up Cinema, “Round Trip Heart” (2015). She has also directed adapted works from other sources, including...

If you're betting on "Boyhood" to win big at the upcoming Academy Awards, think again! Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" was deemed to be the big Oscar frontrunner but a double-dose of guild awards over the weekend tamed those prospects down. First, the Producers Guild of America gave their top honor to Alejandro González Iñárritu's "Birdman," and the Screen Actors Guild followed suit!
"Birdman" took home the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture award! But, since the movie is about acting, this award is just fitting.
My biggest surprise, and it'a welcome surprise indeed, was "The Theory of Everything's" Eddie Redmayne taking home the Outstanding Male Actor trophy. Sorry Michael Keaton! I think Redmayne truly gave the Performance of the Year award!
The usual suspects took home the movie acting awards with wins for Julianne Moore for Best Actress in "Still Alice," J.K. Simmons for Best Supporting Actor for "Whiplash,...

Chicago – It takes more than expensive effects, super-sized egos and exhaustive marketing campaigns to seduce the world. For all of its visual splendor, James Cameron’s “Avatar” has already evaporated from most moviegoers’ memories. Its derivative romance and preachy messages were stretched so thin that they failed to achieve any resonant impact.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Cameron’s previous box office phenomenon, 1997’s “Titanic,” may be every bit as derivative, but it succeeds in the most crucial areas where “Avatar” fell distressingly short. Perhaps Cameron merely lucked out by casting Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, two actors who have proven to be among the most audacious and gifted of their generation. Perhaps a fact-based human story will always be more relatable than the plight of motion-capture creatures from a metaphorical planet of our discontent.

The 8th annual Florida Experimental Film/Video Festival, or Flex Fest, is one of their curated editions, featuring the work of three major avant-garde and experimental filmmakers and their influences over the course of three nights on Feb. 18-20 in Gainesville, Fl. Flex’s honorees this year are: Su Friedrich, Steve Reinke and Sam Green.
The work and influences of Su Friedrich will take to the screen on the first night at the Top Secret Space at 24 N. The Normal Heart, Larry Kramer's semi-autobiographical off-Broadway play about a New Yorker confronted with AIDS in the early years of the pandemic, has been a perennial "movie project." In the last couple of decades, Oscar winners Barbra Streisand and John Schlesinger have at some point in time announced they were going to tackle it, but to date no film version of The Normal Heart has reached the production stages. [Photo: Matt Bomer.] Now, enter Glee creator and movie director Ryan Murphy (Running with Scissors, Eat Pray Love), who optioned the film rights to the play last summer following its Broadway revival success: The Normal Heart won Tonys for Best Revival, Best Supporting Actor (John Benjamin Hickey), and Best Supporting Actress (Ellen Barkin). Murphy apparently hasn't been sitting idly. According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Normal Heart already has a cast: Eat Pray Love's Julia Roberts (who'll next be seen as the...

How do you make a clichéd romantic comedy into a big summer movie? You cast two of the best looking people around to play the leads. Would Friends with Benefits have worked if it starred Steve Buscemi and Betty White? Possibly, but the sex scenes would be the perfect time for a bathroom break. Two friends who decide to have sex without any commitment is as old an idea as January when No Strings Attached came out. But watching Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis wander through the various predictable stages of this game is fun because of who they are. Aside from Tearin. Up My Heart with his SexyBack (sorry, I.ll stop that now) Justin has become quite...

With Drive Angry 3D on the horizon, we celebrate the cinematic majesty of Nicolas Cage in full flow. And there is a lot to celebrate, too...
I am well aware that the Internet is full to brimming with a variety of Nicolas Cage compilations, with titles such as 'Cage Rage' and ‘Cage losing his shit' becoming part of the web vernacular, but the idea behind this list is to try and reflect the various emotional effects that his films and performances are capable of, not just to list his onscreen outbursts. Though don't get me wrong, there's always room for some of that too.
I've been itching to defend his work for a while now, as the majority of negative comments about him tend to be centred on the misconception that all he does is make ‘bad' movies, without people taking the time to look at his career as a whole.

I was thinking about doing a Pajiba After Dark about 80's TV but the only TV I watched during the 80's starred Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, because I was born in 1986. I don't actually have any memory of the 80's, most of what I "know" about the 80's comes from the entertainment of the era, ironically, so it's all kind of a jumble of shoulder pads, perms, neon, and cocaine as far as I'm concerned. And the more I learn about it, the more I'm glad that I wasn't old enough to form permanent memories before then. Of course, the 90's gave us low rise bell bottoms again, belly button piercings, boy band hair, and dark lipstick in the daytime so it's not like I've got bragging room. So if you'd like to talk about the television of the 80's, my 80's week gift to you is that I won't call you old.

Cologne, Germany -- Dieter Kosslick, the director of the Berlin International Film Festival, will receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo award at this year's Sarajevo Film Festival (July 23-31).
The award, which has previously gone to luminaries including director Mike Leigh, actor Steve Buscemi and Venice Film Festival director Marco Mueller, is in part a recognition of Kosslick's support of the Sarajevo Talent Campus. The campus, in which young film talents from Southeast Europe work and learn from seasoned professionals, was launched in 2007 in cooperation with Berlin's own Talent Campus.
