Recently, I wrote an article about how Ron Howard’s Cocoon was hard to find in any format. It came out on DVD many years ago but went out of print and has never been issued on Blu-ray. You also can’t find it digitally on any platform. This is a perfect example of why you should always hang on to your physical media, as I’m lucky enough to own the now out-of-print DVD of that movie, and while it’s far from an ideal copy, it’s something.
But that got me thinking. What other movies are hard to find? I opened up the forum on Twitter, and I was shocked by how many prominent films aren’t available digitally and have gone out of print on disc, making them all the more precious for collectors. At the same time, there are some happy endings, such as Martin Campbell’s No Escape,...

If you’re a tabletop RPG fan and a fan of Neil Gaiman‘s novel Neverwhere, Pizza Games has a little something for you with their current Kickstarter project, On the Odder Side. Utilizing the “Mark of the Odd” system and drawing inspiration from Into the Odd by Chris McDowall, On the Odder Side beckons players to venture into a realm filled with bizarre horrors and Victorian aesthetics.
On the Odder Side takes place in the city of Carcosa (though it has many names), where adventurers either lose their way or daringly cross an invisible boundary, leading them to the “shadow side” of the City. This familiar yet unsettling place grows stranger the longer they remain. The laws governing this realm are as mysterious and intricate as ancient faerie tales. Regardless of how you happen into this uncanny dimension, you must navigate its oddities to survive or find your way back home.

When Henry Selick's animated fantasy "The Nightmare Before Christmas" was first released in October of 1993, it wasn't an overwhelming hit. Made for a budget of $20 million, the film only opened to about $191,000 in its first weekend. It would eventually crawl its way to a respectable but not mind-blowing $50 million overall. Disney, the film's distributor, clearly had little faith in the project and released it under its Touchstone label, feeling it was too weird for little kids. Only a small segment of passionate teenage Tim Burton fans latched onto it (Burton designed the film and wrote the poem on which the script is based), and it was the weirdos and Goths who bought it on VHS and committed the film to memory. For a few brief, sweet years, "Nightmare" was little more than a legitimate cult phenomenon.

"Five Nights At Freddy's" just premiered in theaters and on Peacock, and the adaptation of a much-loved horror video game is already garnering strong reactions from fans and critics alike. While some folks flocking to theaters have been waiting nearly a decade to see the animatronic antics of Freddy Fazbear and his murderous friends on screen, newcomers to the franchise are also getting the chance to see what the fuss (or should I say fuzz?) is all about.
Though the "Five Nights At Freddy's" game franchise created by Scott Cawthon features nine video games and assorted spinoffs and the complex lore to match, the new movie introduces the universe with a seemingly simple premise. What if a night-time security guard (Josh Hutcherson) at a Chuck E. Cheese-type pizza joint ends up discovering that the robot animals meant to entertain kids during the daytime actually come alive at night? Add...

I have fond memories of begging my parents to drive me to the library as soon as the first autumn leaves began to hit the ground. And while I’ve since grown out of R.L. Stine and Lemony Snicket, I still think there’s nothing better to welcome the Halloween season than a warm drink accompanied by a spooky book.
And with October finally upon us, I thought that this might be a good time to start a creepy book club and recommend six Halloween-themed novels that are perfect for All Hallow’s Eve reading lists. After all, there’s something to be said for the quiet terror of finding yourself engrossed by a good horror novel in between scary movie marathons and candy shopping.

For a few years there back in the early ’80s, Disney took a turn to the dark side, releasing live-action movies like “The Watcher in the Woods” (featuring a creepy late-career Bette Davis) and “Something Wicked This Way Comes” (from the mind of Ray Bradbury) that were intense enough to inspire nightmares — in kids, at least. The youngsters of that time are now parents, and some are surely asking themselves how far they can trust Disney not to traumatize another generation when a movie like “Haunted Mansion” comes along.
Truth be told, the PG-13-rated feature — which marks the studio’s second big-screen adaptation of its spooky theme park attraction — isn’t really that scary. Director Justin Simien (“Dear White People”) leans more on comedy than horror, bringing together a handful of funny stars to deal with Gracey Manor’s ghost problem. Review: Hutch Dano is the grandson of legendary character actor Royal Dano and the son of actor Rick Dano, so it’s no surprise that he got into acting himself. He has racked up over twenty screen credits in the last thirteen years, including playing Zeke on 77 episodes of the Disney series Zeke and Luther – and now that he has made his feature directing debut, he has brought several of his former co-stars onto the project with him. Dano stars in his film As Certain as Death, which he also scripted, alongside his Zombeavers co-star Cortney Palm, who was also in Disappearance with him and Guy Wilson, his Den Brother co-star David Lambert, and his Zeke and Luther co-star Daniel Curtis Lee,...

At the end of the 70s and beginnings of the 80s, Disney decided to take a turn into a darker side of cinema, at least for them. In 1979 they released The Black Hole, a sci-fi epic which had among its cast Anthony Perkins, best known for Psycho as well as a space station manned by animated corpse/robot hybrids. The film would include an ending which would literally show the villain of the piece in hell in penance for his crimes for all eternity. The following year would be another creepy sci-fi entry The Watcher In The Woods.
Following these films would be the gory fantasy epic Dragonslayer. That film actually showed a real Disney Princess being eaten by blind baby dragons on camera. So to round out a really fantastic run of Dark movies the House of Mouse went all in with a fantasy film that covered themes of death,...

Comic books tend to favor tightly paced stories with striking visuals and a brief page count, so it makes sense that horror anthologies used to be all the rage in the funny pages before the Comics Code Authority brought an entire artform to its knees. However, while superheroes have since dominated the industry with their (mostly) family-friendly conflicts, there are still a handful of brave indie publishers that insist on putting out edgy media for those with a taste for the macabre.
One example of these persistent entrepreneurs is Blind Cyclops Books, a relatively new Chicago-based publishing house that specializes in dark literature. Their most recent foray into graphic novels comes in the form of Godfly, a self-proclaimed tale of true horror written by Ryan Oliver (founder of Bcb) and drawn by Jeff Kuhnie.

Psychological illusion specialist Derren Brown is returning to U.K. broadcaster Channel 4 for the first time in three years with “Showman,” his recent, interactive one-man live stage show.
Brown, who has a long relationship with the broadcaster, was on Channel 4 in 2020 with the special “Derren Brown, 20 Years of Mind Control: Live.”
“Showman” is billed as Brown’s most personal and emotional show to date, centering on themes of how life’s difficulties bring people together, and living life attentively. Half a million people were taken through the journey of the show in theaters across the U.K. It concluded a 14-week run at London’s Apollo Theatre earlier this month.
Brown said: “It’s had the best response of any show I’ve done. It’s lovely to know, and I’ve been very touched to read and hear people’s responses to it so far – it’s a...

“It’s Halloween. I guess everyone’s entitled to one good scare,” Sheriff Brackett says in John Carpenter’s Halloween. While the seminal slasher delivered no shortage of creepy moments and well-placed scares, the Halloween movies aren’t the only ones to embrace holiday frights. Whether through subtle moments, gross-out gags, potent jump scares, or phobia-inducing chills, Halloween-set horror offers something for everyone – beyond the iconic franchise.
This Halloween, we look back at ten of the scariest moments in non-Halloween horror movies that take place around the best holiday of the year. Halloween, of course!
The Child – Sentient Jack-o-Lantern
Alicianne has just been hired as housekeeper and caretaker to young Rosalie Nordon, who recently lost her mother. Alicianne soon realizes that Rosalie has a supernatural gift, including zombies at her disposal, and uses it to seek revenge on those who piss her off. Atmospheric dread erupts into Fulci-like chaos on Halloween.

Amy Adams is one of the premiere actors of our time, and it's still an absolute crime that she wasn't nominated for an Oscar for her performance as the Disney princess thrown into live-action New York City, Giselle, in "Enchanted." Adams as a human being already feels like the closest we'll ever get to seeing a Disney princess in real life, which made her the perfect casting choice.
"Enchanted" saw Princess Giselle transported out of the 2D animated land of Andalasia and into the busy and bustling 3D world of the Big Apple. It was the standard fish-out-of-water story with a Disney spin, and fans couldn't get enough of it. Now, 15 years later, Giselle and her big sleeves are back, with the all-new tale of "Disenchanted." The film sees Giselle, her husband Robert (Patrick Dempsey), and daughter Morgan (Gabriella Baldacchino) as they head toward the next phase in their happily ever after,...

Tobe Hooper.
At the mere mention of his name, which of the late filmmaker’s works leap to mind?
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, of course. Certainly his most iconic film, and surely his masterpiece.
How about that film’s gonzo 80s sequel? Or perhaps Eaten Alive, his EC-tinged grindhouse film featuring a maniacal hotel proprietor and his pet crocodile? Maybe your mind leaps to his blockbuster spook story Poltergeist, his nightmarish alien invasion remake Invaders from Mars, or his superb television miniseries adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot?
But what of The Funhouse, Hooper’s stylish, scary entry in the then-burgeoning teen slasher boom? Released in 1981, a golden year for releases in that subgenre, The Funhouse stands as a vital entry in the filmmaker’s canon, marrying his penchant for dark humor and grisly horror with a studio budget, paving the way for much of his work throughout the next decade.

It’s never too early to start preparing a must-see Halloween viewing list, and we’re seeing quite a tempting lineup of upcoming horror movies for the fourth quarter of ’22. I figure there’s no better time than the present to start filling up your calendar – and to that end, we’re here to help in your quest for the newest and latest in spooky cinema.
Before I forge ahead, I should point out the release dates on some of these titles are still a little… well, squishy. I just wanted to make sure you knew that going in, because in this post-pandemic age, nothing seems certain anymore. A couple of drop-dates are still unknown, subject to change at a moment’s notice (it happens) and might even get pushed to next year. Of course, we’ve got our eyes laser-focused on the latest horror news, so feel free to...

Isidoro Raponi, a mechanical effects artist who worked on blockbuster films such as “Alien” and “E.T.,” died May 27, a representative confirmed to Variety. He died of congestive heart failure at a rehab facility in Los Angeles. He was 76.
Born in Frosinone, Italy in 1945, Raponi got his start working as apprentice for effects creator Carlo Rambaldi, who owned a workshop directly across the street from Raponi’s family bookstore. Raponi worked on numerous Italian films with Rambaldi before relocating to Los Angeles in 1975 to work with his mentor on the “King Kong” remake. He would continue to work closely with Rambaldi on numerous films throughout the ’70s and ’80s, including “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” and “Alien.” Raponi was one of the main designers and operators, alongside Rabaldi, of the alien animatronic in 1982’s “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.”

Pam Polifroni, a longtime casting director for “Gunsmoke” who gave early acting roles to Jodie Foster, Jon Voight, Loretta Swit and others, has died. She was 90.
Polifroni died in Columbus, Ohio, on Thursday, Nov. 21 as a result of dementia, her daughter-in-law confirmed to Variety.
With more than 50 credits to her name by the end of her career, Polifroni worked in both film and television, though most of her hires appeared on the small screen.
Polifroni worked on “Gunsmoke” beginning in 1966 and continued through 1975. She was responsible for suggesting and landing Bette Davis for a guest role on the show, and also gave Jon Voight one of his earliest Hollywood parts. One of Jodie Foster’s youngest roles, at age seven, came after being hired by Polifroni for a small role in “Gunsmoke.” Loretta Swit also appeared on the series thanks to Polifroni, as well as on “Hawaii Five-o,” ahead of...

Certain movie titles are better in theory than practice. “Something,” Stephen Portland’s low-budget psychological horror film about the stress brought on by caring for a newborn baby, has a title that refers to the mysterious force disrupting the lives of two young parents. Is that force nothing more — or less — than the mother’s postpartum fear and depression? Is it a mysterious physical intruder? Or is it a spirit that arrives in the form of a black-cloaked figure wearing one of those creepy long-beaked plague-doctor masks?
The ambiguity, or maybe we should just call it confusion, is supposed to be expressed by the title, which is offered in the ominous something? what thing? spirit of Ray Bradbury’s “Something Wicked This Way Comes.” But instead, the word “Something” just sounds like a noncommittal placeholder. And the film is a little like that too. The entire thing is set inside...

Hocus Pocus
Despite being rated PG, “Hocus Pocus” is a classic, iconic Halloween movie, and its cult status has only gained in the 20 years since its release.
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Is it a Halloween movie? A Christmas movie? Don’t know, but the good thing about this Tim Burton classic is that it can be relied upon all throughout the holiday season.
Ghostbusters (2016)
This remake of the 1980s classic has a phenomenal comedic cast of funny ladies, and luckily, this is one modern reboot that didn’t go the “dark and grounded” route, making it a fun adventure, even for kids born with a smart phone in their hands.
Casper
A family-friendly coming of age tale and a fun, spooky adventure all in one, Christina Ricci
Harry Potter
Does Halloween even exist in the world of Hogwarts? No matter, because this fantasy epic has spawned millions of costumed fans.

Halloween is right around the corner. The season for creepy costumes, pumpkin carving, and candy collecting is nigh. Above all, it’s the season for haunted hayrides, menacing mazes, eerie escape rooms, and spooky spectacles. These attractions are more popular now than ever. Forbes reported on the numbers: Halloween spending reached $8.4 billion in 2016, and it was estimated to reach $9.1 billion last year, so the timing is perfect for a big-screen horror film that’s set almost entirely in an amusement park on All Hallows’ Eve.
Hell Fest falls back on a familiar formula: put archetypal, good-looking young people in peril on a dark night and let the body count commence. The “Hell Fest” of the title is a traveling carnival that features a labyrinth of horror-themed rides, diversions, and themed rooms, and attracts thousands of fans wherever it goes. I'm not the biggest fan of director Eli Roth. Cabin Fever was a decent film but I haven't really cared for anything else that he's done, especially the Hostel films. The guy is mostly known for his style of hardcore horror and torture porn, so it was shocking to see that he was going to be directing a family horror movie for Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment called The House With a Clock In Its Walls. I was even more shocked by the fact that I actually enjoyed the movie!
Look, The House With a Clock In Its Walls was far from perfect, and there were certain aspects that bugged me about it, but for the most part, it was an enjoyable movie! I'd even go as far to say that it's my favorite Eli Roth film and probably one of the better movies he's made. Remember, this is coming...

Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce make such a convincing onscreen couple, it’s hard to believe that their first time working together is in director Björn Runge’s “The Wife,” opening this week.
Both broke into Hollywood about the same time; Close with her Oscar-nominated film debut in 1982’s “The World According to Garp” and Pryce as the embodiment of evil in 1983’s “Something Wicked This Way Comes.” Both have enjoyed heralded stage careers, scooping up Tony Awards — three for Close, two for Pryce.
Based on a novel by Meg Wolitzer, “The Wife” is an intimate and searing portrait of a long-term marriage in all its secrets and compromises. The pair portray Joan and Joe Castleman, who are forced to confront some tough truths when Joe is awarded a Nobel Prize for his latest novel. The pair spoke recently after a screening of the film, before Close had to return...

Earlier this year, D.J. Caruso’s Disturbia turned 10 years old, and since I was already chatting with him for Happy Death Day, I could not resist chatting with Christopher Landon about the project, which became a turning point in his career as a then up-and-coming screenwriter with huge aspirations.
He discussed how Martha Stewart was the inspiration behind Disturbia, as well as how he channeled his own personal grief into the script. Landon also gave his thoughts on why we always need good PG-13 horror films (and that’s a sentiment this writer is very much in agreement with).
One movie that I feel deserves a little more love is Disturbia, and it turned ten years old earlier this year. I really enjoyed it, and I know it's cool to hate on Shia Labeouf now and everything, but I loved him in it. And he has this great relationship with Carrie-Anne Moss,...

I suppose there were plenty of successful rodeo-themed westerns back in the day, perhaps the kind interrupted by a cowboy song every ten minutes or so.

Can old friends make peace in the wake of an unexpected tragedy? That’s the million-dollar question on Saturday’s Halt and Catch Fire (AMC, 9/8c), as Cameron arrives to help Donna pack up Gordon’s house. (May he rest in peace!)
In the exclusive sneak peek above, Donna tells Cameron that she managed to get to the end of her video game Pilgrim — which, as viewers will recall, is no small feat.
“You finished it finished it?” Cameron asks, taken by surprise. “Finally!” Donna exclaims. “You made it hard enough!” But it’s the warm exchange that follows that...

But… but we hadn’t even gotten to say, “Hail, hail, the gang’s all here” yet. Nonetheless, Sunday’s Fear the Walking Dead found another member of our long-splintered group bailing on the reunion that showrunner Dave Erickson promised was coming. Can’t say we blamed the character in question for pulling an Ofelia and striking out on their own. But it was still kind of a bummer. Read on, and we’ll go over how we got from here to… well, not here anymore.

Everyone needs an escape from time to time. A place apart from reality, where the strange whisper with the miraculous, and cheap trinkets are bartered with greasy denizens of the night. What better place to set a horror film than the carnival, where the potential for mystery awaits around every crimson tent and distorted mirror? If you’re so inclined, step right up and buy a ticket to The Funhouse (1981), the late Tobe Hooper’s wonderful tribute to the seedy shadowed world of carnies, caramel apples, and Universal monsters.
Released in March by Universal, The Funhouse underperformed at the box office, but critics (including Gene Siskel) admired it for focusing on suspense and thrills rather than gruesome mayhem. In a landscape littered with severed limbs and phallically inclined urban legends, Mr. Hooper used his genius to once again showcase the underbelly of the American psyche, this time with a major studio’s dollars.

Ultimately, the finale leaves us with many questions like who would Rosaline choose? And would Count Paris be able to take over Verona? Unfortunately, those questions will never be answered since Still Star-Crossed won't be returning for a second season. Still, "Something Wicked This Way Comes" manages to be a dramatic and satisfying ending.

It's not always easy being geeky. The celebrated genre writer Ray Bradbury knew this all too well; as a kid growing up in the 1920s and 30s, he was intoxicated by all things otherworldly and imaginative: classic horror movies, pulp sci-fi stories about Mars, comic strips detailing the exploits of Buck Rogers. Eventually, Bradbury's peers teased him mercilessly, until, in a bid to fit in, he ripped his Buck Rogers comics to shreds. But far from helping the young Bradbury draw a line under his obsessions, the destruction of his beloved comics left him feeling unhappy and soulless.

The grotesque appeal of carnivals, their inherent and attractive darkness, are long-established motifs of horror. Sideshow acts are full of the lurid and uncanny—humans whose appearances or movements aren’t “normal,” showcased behind heavy curtains or glass as objects of hideous wonder. Few can capture this fascination better than Ray Bradbury, who, along with Tod Browning and Diane Arbus, has solidified these images into our public consciousness. His fiction is shadowy, nebulous and exploitative, like these carnivals, and he evokes their qualities with the highest art.
Many of his plots center around an uncanny or supernatural force wreaking havoc in a mundane environment—an everyman who realizes his skeleton is trying to kill him, the arrival of a strange and deadly circus in Something Wicked This Way Comes, or a fantastic environment that is explored through recognizable, everyday emotions. The Martian Chronicles is otherworldly in setting, but its characters are preoccupied with grief,...

Space horror in The Black Hole. Animated death in The Black Cauldron. Ryan looks back at a unique period in Disney's filmmaking history...
When George Lucas started writing Star Wars in the early 70s, the space saga was intended to fill a void left behind by westerns, pirate movies and the sci-fi fantasy of old matinee serials. "Disney had abdicated its rein over the children's market," Lucas once said, according to Peter Biskind's book, Easy Riders, Raging Bulls, "and nothing had replaced it."

Indeed, Disney was one of many Hollywood studios that Lucas had approached with Star Wars and they, just like Universal, United Artists and everyone other than 20th Century Fox boss Alan Ladd Jr, had turned it down flat.

Something wicked this way comes when J.K. Rowling & Co. dive back into the magical universe of witchcraft and wizardry in the latest in the Harry Potter franchise, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It’s a brave new world, literally, as the action has now shifted to New York from Hogwarts and a well-intentioned wizard by the name of Newt Scamander (the affable Eddie Redmayne) is in town with a PETA-friendly mission on his shoulders and a briefcase full of intriguing creatures at his feet. The nomenclature is purportedly different—Muggles are called NoMajs and the Ministry of Magic is replaced with the Magical Congress of the United States—but the setting is intimately familiar.
And Newt is in for more than he bargained for. Dark forces lurk in the gloomy buildings of the Big Apple while the world of magicians is in turmoil, faced with exposure to NoMajs.

Something wicked this way comes, and I'm not just talking about the dark lord. These characters are more devilishly evil. (And I like it!)
For the season three premiere, Salem Season 3 Episode 1 saw the characters do a role reversal since the last time we saw them. Cotton and John are no longer the leaders they once were, while Mercy and Anne are embracing having power. Even the dark lord is a shadow of his child-like self.
I was hesitant last season when little John became the big bad. I didn't know if he'd get his hands dirty and pose a threat. But after seeing him kill Countess Marburg last season and now pushing his authority over witches like Sebastian and Anne, I think I'm on board.
Remember dear ones, to the Reaper, all flesh is grass...even witch flesh. A great terror will soon fall upon Salem and there is...
